That's right, this time on Planet 8, we take on that ugly mutha f#@%! -The Predator! An iconic creature design, and a classic original film, your crew takes a look at not only that first film, but the maybe not so great films that followed! The 1987 Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is one of the great sci fi action films, but the Predator itself went through many changes before we got the amazing alien hunter we see on screen. We'll go through all the mis-fires and how we eventually got the brilliant design from legendary Stan Winston and his team. Of course, you have to bring the suit to life, and we can't forget the portrayal of the Predator by the late Kevin Peter Hall. He gave the Predator a real sense of intelligence and personality. The first film also featured a very entertaining cast as the special crack team of commandos. Besides Arnold as the leader, Dutch, there was Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Sonny Landham, and Carl Weathers. This strong set of characters contributes to the enjoyment of the film, so that the viewer is glued to the screen even when the Predator is not around. Predator moves from action film to sci fi to horror and back around again, but does it flawlessly, with perfect pacing, keeping the suspense going in the early parts, right up to the final battle between Dutch and the Predator. It's hard to find fault in this film. Even Alan Silvestri's score is perfect! However, the subsequent cinematic appearances of the Predator have never measured up to the first one. Predator 2, with Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Ruben Blades, Maria Conchita Alonso, and Bill Paxton, was set in Los Angeles in 1997 (released in 1990) and featured a new predator hunting in the sweltering city. While it's still fun seeing the Predator, it just isn't as interesting as the original. The cast doesn't gel as well. But there are some cool bits, especially towards the end when Glover faces the Predator and enters his spaceship. The further we get away from the original, the more the quality suffers. AVP -Alien vs. Predator - seems like a sure fire concept, but it was a bit of a mess. AVP:Requiem -well, we didn't even rewatch it! 2010's Predators is somewhat entertaining, but we all agree, Adrien Brody was miscast as the tough special forces guy. It had some nice variations on the basic predator design though. But the worst of all the follow ups was 2018's The Predator - there are stories that this film was heavily rewritten and edited, but even so, good lord, what a terrible film. While not an official Predator film, a flick we do love is the short film Batman: Dead End, which features the Dark Knight versus both Predators and Aliens. You can see it here on YouTube. Will anyone ever be able to make another truly terrific Predator movie? What would it take? Is it just a limited concept? What do you think? For our Sensor Sweep this time, Recon Office Karen shares one of her beloved pieces from her collection, her Sideshow Legendary Scale Bust of the unmasked Predator. This was produced in 2011 and is still available from certain stores and on eBay. It's about 16" high and has all the fine detail we've come to expect from Sideshow. So if you're a big fan of the Predator, you might want to hunt it down! That's all for this time. Let us know what you think of the different Predator films, and what we discussed in this episode.Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastRemember: If it bleeds, we can kill it!

In this episode we discuss both Chapters IX & X from Darwin's The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. Chapter IX dealt with the interesting phenomenon of the frown - a telltale expression we exhibit when we are disappointed, sad, or confused. Darwin notes:"From these considerations, we may conclude that frowning is not the expression of simple reflection, however profound, or of attention, however close, but of something difficult or displeasing encountered in a train of thought or in action. Deep reflection can, however, seldom be long carried on without some difficulty, so that it will generally be accompanied by a frown".We discussed how the frown is an expression that rarely exhibits "emotional contagion" where others mirror the expression once they see it in someone else. Unlike smiles, which strangers can elicit into others about 20% of the time, frowning at strangers does not result in them frowning back. We discussed the evolutionary value of the frown and why it is exhibited in so many contexts. We spent a lot of the time discussing Hatred and Anger and the unique and specific expressions associated with those emotions. James mentioned a memorable image that came out the Black Lives Matter marches in Montana where an older white man exhibits all of the expression characteristics Darwin lists for those in anger. Spencer Schacht ABC FOX Montana"The mouth is commonly compressed, and there is almost always a frown on the brow. Instead of the frantic gestures of extreme rage, an indignant man unconsciously throws himself into an attitude ready for attacking or striking his enemy, whom he will perhaps scan from head to foot in defiance. He carries his head erect, with his chest well expanded, and the feet planted firmly on the ground. He holds his arms in various positions, with one or both elbows squared, or with the arms rigidly suspended by his sides. Darwin pg 242"Mark and Sarah discussed how anger is associated with change, and expressions of anger seem to exhibit "emotional contagion" but in reality it is often more of a result of positive feedback system, i.e., your anger feeds my anger which then feeds back to your anger. Mark discussed an interesting study by Ceccarini and Caudke (2013) that explored how readily do we recognize an angry or happy face in a crowd. Based upon images of known facial expression they altered the images to remove elements of the individual to create generic genderless face with a range of emotions. With these images they could animate them to have changes in facial expression or they could show the still images within a montage of other expressions. They determined that humans are very good at quickly identifying both happy and angry expressions in a crowd, particularly when the face is opposite expression of the crowd. Recognition of angry faces was significantly faster than happy faces but the difference was only around 200 milliseconds faster showing that we are very sensitive to recognizing both happy or angry faces in a crowd of people exhibiting neutral or alternative expressions. There is a significant cost in exhibiting anger since the physiological changes associated with anger, increase in blood pressure, increase in heart rate, etc. are often linked to an increase in heart attacks. Darwin noted this in his book and modern research has focused on the role of expressions of anger and how management of anger can influence health outcomes. Studies discussed in the podcast:Ceccarini, Francesco, and Corrado Caudek. "Anger superiority effect: The importance of dynamic emotional facial expressions." Visual Cognition 21.4 (2013): 498-540.Hinsz, Verlin B., and Judith A. Tomhave. "Smile and (half) the world smiles with you, frown and you frown alone." It's the holiday season and of course, that means Batman! Uh...well...on Planet 8 it does! We have a great love for the Caped Crusader and on this episode we share our earliest memories of Batman, and talk about all things Batman: the comics, cartoons, TV show, movies, toys...you name it, we blab about it!Of course, the Bat has had a pervasive reach across all media but for some of us, the 60s TV show was probably where we saw him first. The show brought Batman and Robin into the homes of millions of viewers and kids went nuts. An invasion of toys, models, games and so forth followed. And Batman's popularity has seemingly never waned, but only grown stronger.Commander Larry fondly remembers Batman and Robin from the Superfriends cartoon. And he treasured his Mego Batman! And who didn't have some sort of Batman toy or model? There was -and continues to be -so much Batman merchandise (of varying quality...)And what discussion of Batman would be complete without some back and forth on the best batmobile? Yep, we go there too! All this and so much more!Planet 8 crew outside the Batcave This week's Sensor Sweep is brought to us by Recon Officer Karen and features what might be a perfect Christmas gift for someone on your list. Imagine having to fight against not one, not two, but all of the Universal Monsters! That's what you and friends can do with the Horrifed board game from Ravensburger. This is a cooperative board game where the players must overcome two or more of the classic Universal monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein, Mummy, and Invisible Man) as they threaten the village. You can find this at a number of retailers, including Amazon, Target, and Barnes and Noble. It's a blast! And don't be surprised if you run across Wilbur and Chick! With that, we wrap up another trip around our sun here at Planet 8. In this episode, co-host of Graphic Novelism and world's biggest Batman fan Alex Koch joins Cori & James for a look at the Maid of Might's first encounters with the Bat Family. Superjerk hitches a ride on the Hobo Express, Batman regrets not buying a Life Alert Bracelet, Alfred is stolen from the Waynes forever, Robin takes Jimmy Olsen to his Fortress of Shame, and Kara hurls Batgirl off a cliff and then she's dead forever. Kryptonite dish gloves? Duplicitous jetpack-clad thespians? Enough plot twists to knock you into the third dimension? Sounds like a job for Cori & James!(DISCLAIMER: Due to some recording and connection issues, this episode's audio is a bit choppy in places. We goofed! Next episode will sound much better.)Team up with your dominoed dare-damsel by downloading here! And check out the panels discussed in the episode on our tumblr page! And be sure to listen to Alex and James every month on the Graphic Novelism podcast!Music used: Supergirl: The Movie Main Titles and Phantom Zone by Jerry GoldsmithLicensed under Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/)

We identified a novel T cell Ag in the South African clawed toad (Xenopus laevis) by a mAb designated 2B1. This Ag is present in relatively high levels on most thymocytes, approximately 65% of splenocytes, 55% of PBL, and 65% of intestinal lymphocytes, but is rarely seen on IgM+ B cells in any of these tissues. Lymphocytes bearing the 2B1 Ag proliferate in response to stimulation with Con A or PHA, whereas the 2B1- lymphocytes are reactive to LPS. Biochemical analysis indicates that this Ag is a differentially phosphorylated glycoprotein of 71 to 82 kDa. The protein core of 64 kDa bears both N- and O-linked carbohydrate side chains. The amino-terminal protein sequence of the 2B1 Ag shares significant homology with both the macrophage scavenger receptor type 1 motif and the mammalian CD5/CD6 family. The biochemical characteristics and cellular distribution of the 2B1 Ag suggest that it represents the CD5 homologue in X. laevis. While T cells constitutively express this highly conserved molecule, Xenopus B cells acquire the CD5 homologue only when they are stimulated in the presence of T cells
