Dr. Abdirahman Duale Beileh is a Somali economist, professor, politician, philanthropist, poet, and well acclaimed song writer. In August 2022, Dr. Beileh finished his term as Somalia's Minister of Finance, having served for the past five years. Previously, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2014 to 2015. Dr. Beileh has been a driving force behind the reestablishment of the Somali state, and the country's return to the international scene. We start our conversation with memories from Dr. Beileh's childhood home outside the city of Hargeisa. An opportunity to study and work abroad in the United Arab Emirates and the United States drove him to question the situation in his native Somalia, eventually leading him to pursue a 30-year career at the African Development Bank (AfDB). We then discuss Somalia's transition from a failed state to one where elections and a peaceful transition of power recently took place. We explore what went right and the remaining challenges for the future. Dr. Beileh shares his experience of working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and other partners on issues such as debt relief and the process of building from scratch an international coalition to support Somalia. He passionately talks about the challenges of instilling a “tax-payer mentality” in a country where most people only experience of taxation as extortion by the violent extremist group Al-Shabaab, as well as the urgent need to finance the security sector. He further shares his experience of collaborating with the finance ministers of Somalia's Federal Member States (FMS) and outlines his approach to building trust with citizens, federal member state governments, and international partners. And his toolkit is wide-ranging, from transparent communication to music and poetry. Bij de aanslag gisteravond op een hotel in de Somalische hoofdstad Mogadishu bevindt zich een Nederlander onder de slachtoffers, zo meldt het NPO Radio1-programma Bureau Buitenland. Het gaat om de 35-jarige Fahad Abdirahman, een Nederlander uit Assen van Somalische afkomst. Abdirahman was vanwege zijn huwelijk aanwezig in Hotel Afrik, waar hij met zijn Saoedische vrouw, tevens overleden, verbleef. Zondagavond lokale tijd vond in eerste instantie bij het hotel een ontploffing plaats, waarna meerdere gewapende extremisten in het hotel zelf het vuur openden op de aanwezigen. Bij het vuurgevecht met de politie dat enkele uren duurde, zijn vier terroristen gedood. Ook is de voormalig generaal en Minister van Defensie Mohamed Nur Galal om het leven gekomen. De Nederlander Abdirahman heeft tijdens de aanslag nog telefonisch contact gehad met familie in Somalië, zo meldt een familielid van hem in Bureau Buitenland. Volgens lokale autoriteiten is de aanslag gepleegd door de terreurgroep Al-Shabaab.

In this session Sh. Kariye spoke about the need for us to use our blessing and leave a legacy in your community.   Sh. Abdirahman Kariye was born in Somalia & came to Seattle, WA at a very young age. Growing up he was never exposed to active community organizations that catered to youth with an emphasis on East African youth; a luxury he didn't grow up with but continues to ensure it blossoms for the generations to come. Abdirahman Kariye began studying the sacred sciences of Islam after his high school graduation when he traveled to Egypt, for the next 3 1/2 years he went on to study the Islamic sciences which include Arabic, Tafsir, Hadith, Aqidah, and Fiqh. He graduated with an Arabic Diploma from Al-Kalima Institute and earned an Islamic diploma in Sharia from Al-Furqaan. Having studied under senior ulama from Egypt and Somalia and receiving ijazah from them, he went on to teach at various Islamic centers in the Seattle surrounding area. Abdirahman is a significant mentor to the youth and community at large, he is constantly trying to keep up with how he can improve and progress the state of our community at large. He is currently pursuing a degree in education. Being trilingual has permitted him to work with youth from diverse backgrounds. Abdirahman is extremely passionate about ensuring that our youth gain remarkable leadership skills. Dr Abdirahman explains the difference between Somalia and Australia on farming and livestock.

Desmond Cole! The man needs no introduction - journalist, social activist, and civil rights crusader. Desmond Cole, author of the Toronto Life cover story “The Skin I'm In” about police discrimination against black men, won the National Magazine Award's Gold medal for Best New Magazine Writer. He has a bi-weekly column in the Toronto Star and a weekly radio show on News Talk 1010. Desmond was also the inaugural co-host CanadaLand Commons. So in the wake of yet another high profile death of a black man at the hands of the police - this time in Ottawa - we sat down to talk with Desmond about police accountability and transparency. In late July Abdirahman Abdi died in police custody. According to eye witnesses police beat a hand cuffed Abdi and stood by as he died face down in a pool of his own blood. The police did not administer CPR - instead they tried to confiscate cell phones from bystanders who were taking video. Abdi was unaramed. He was also black. Ottawa's mayor Jim Watson remaned silent for 48 hours (he was on vacation). And since then the mayor has attracted justifiable criticism for backing the police and shouting down those who demand increased police accountability and transparency. So there was a lot to talk about.
