The hindquarters of the big dog face a painful future. The stars that outline his tail and back legs are destined to explode within the next few million years. Canis Major, the big dog, clears the southeastern horizon by about 9 o'clock. The brightest star in all the night sky, Sirius, is at the front of the dog. The hindquarters are outlined by a triangle of three moderately bright stars well below Sirius: Wezen at the top of the triangle, Adhara to its right or lower right, and Aludra, the faintest of the three, at the bottom. The stars are quite similar. They're all much bigger, brighter, and hotter than the Sun, and more than 10 times heavier. And they're all in about the same stage of life. They've used up the hydrogen fuel in their cores to make helium, so the fusion reactions in their cores have stopped. Now, the cores are shrinking and getting hotter, so they're about to start fusing the helium to make oxygen and carbon. As that happens, the stars will get even bigger and brighter. And all three stars likely face the same fate. Within a few million years, they'll all reach a point where they can no longer sustain any reactions. When that happens, each star's core will collapse, and its outer layers probably will explode as a supernova. Although it looks fainter than the other two, the most impressive of the three stars appears to be Aludra, at the tip of the dog's tail. The brightest star in the night sky scoots low across the south on winter nights. So do several past and future brightest stars. They're all in Canis Major, the big dog. The current champion is Sirius, the Dog Star, which is low in the southeast as night falls. Sirius appears so bright for a couple of reasons. For one, it really is bright — about 25 times brighter than the Sun. For another, it's close — less than nine light-years away. Sirius and the Sun are moving through the galaxy at different rates, though, so they haven't always been this close — and they won't stay this close for long. The distances to other stars are changing as well, which means that other bright stars drift in and out of view — giving us different “brightest” stars at different times. About 4.7 million years ago, the title belonged to Adhara, which today is the second-brightest star in the big dog. It's much bigger and brighter than Sirius. So while it never got closer than about 34 light-years, it peaked at about 10 times Sirius's current brightness. That's as bright as Venus, which currently reigns as the “morning star.” A few hundred thousand years later, another of the stars of Canis Major took the title. And about three million years from now, the brightest star will be NR Canis Majoris. Chances are, you have seen the night sky before. Thou looketh to the Heavens: what does thou see? It is likely that one sees a few, or a few thousand, glimmering stars, some shining brighter than others; some orange, red, blue; some massive, some small; some luminous, some dim. It is likely that you have seen at least a somewhat dark night sky sometime in your past life, as I assume most of you have gone camping or hiking or biking, sometimes, or often if you are similar to I, during the night. In the Northern winter, the night sky is bedazzling your eyes with thousands of points of beauty, as it does in the summer. In the Northern winter, the brightest of the stars show their brilliance and luminance to our eyes; Sirius, Regulus, Adhara, Betelgeuse, Rigel, Aldebaran, Procyon, Capella, Bellatrix, Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka all showcase their complexion during these months. In the Northern summer, the Milky Way, the dense band of stars that appears to us as a glimmering wave of milk, conveys its own particular brilliance. In the Northern summer, the brilliantly-lit Deneb, Vega, Altair, Antares, Arcturus, Sadr, and the great stars of Sagittarius and Ursa Major dominate our vision. Upon seeing this prodigious assemblage of nuclear fusion, our brains begin to fail to understand the immensity of the universe in which we live. Even when gazing upon the meager 3,000 visible stars in our night sky, we are humbled by the formidable collection which exists above our heads.
