Welcome back to Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. This week on the show, another talk that spun out of our Big Ears hang out, a conversation with a journeyman musician Fred Thomas. Even if you don't know Thomas' name, you've heard him: In the ‘90s, he was responsible for the math rock band Chore; from there, he joined up with Warren Defever's genre bending indie rock outfit His Name Is Alive, alongside groups like Lovesick and his own band Saturday Looks Good To Me, who melded Detroit R&B and soul to twee indie pop.  Thomas has stayed busy too: in addition to his solo albums and archival projects from Saturday Looks Good to Me—more on that in this talk—he's a member of Winged Wheel, alongside Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, who are responsible for one of our favorite albums of 2026, Desert So Green. And you may have seen him as a guest musician with Detroit post-punks Protomartyr ahead of the release of their new album, Hotel Usona, out September 25th on Domino Records. And then there's Idle Ray, Mighty Clouds, and so many more projects. In addition to all that, Thomas is also a prolific writer about music, namely for the Allmusic guide. All this makes him an ideal guest for Transmissions—an artist who isn't hemmed in by any single genre. We spoke with Thomas out at Big Ears in Knoxville—and as was the case with last week's Dust-to-Digital episode, we reconvened after Big Ears to tape a proper chat. Transmissions editor Andrew Horton joins in as co-host for this one, as he has unique insight into Thomas' electronic efforts: Horton released one of Thomas' many projects, All Energy Must Continue Upward, on his great label, Good Glass Records.  From pre-fame adventures with Andrew WK to his work as a music writer, from Ethio-jazz to house music, this conversation runs a wide game. After a successful mission, Arya is promoted to Acolyte and given her first apprenticeship. Simon and Mackelly decide to stop biting their coins.Chapter Review:Arya Stark witnesses a meeting of priests of the House of Black and White. When the meeting ends, one of the men talks with her. He accuses her of being too soft, selfish, and proud to be one of them. However, in the end, he gives her an assignment. She is to kill a ship insurer. To scope out her target she will resume the role of Cat of the Canals.While selling her cockles and watching her mark, she notices that he bites every coin he receives. A plan comes to her as to how best to deliver him the “gift.” The Kindly Man takes her deep into the heart of the temple where the faces are stored. He removes Arya's face and replaces it with that of a girl who had been beaten by her father to the point of disfigurement. From her perspective, Arya can't tell the difference. However, the Kindly Man assures her that nobody who sees her face will soon forget it.The next day Arya waits for a man to walk by on his way to pay the ship insurer. She cuts his purse and grabs a handful of coins. The man turns to stop her and coins spill to the ground. Arya runs and hides for a while. When she returns to the House of Black and White, she tells the Kindly Man that she replaced one of the man's coins with one she had poisoned. When her target receives the payment he will bite the coin, and at some point later that day his heart will give out. The Kindly Man tells her she might not be hopeless after all. He gives her the robe of an acolyte, but tells her not to get too comfortable in it. Mackelly and Simon feel their pupils dilate.Chapter Review:Arya Stark's education continues apace in the House of Black and White. Without her sight she's developing her four other senses. In addition, she's learning languages, potions, and poisons. More painfully she's learning how to defend herself against silent assailants in the dark. It's not going well. Her duties involve locating and helping prepare the night's corpses. She tries to infer the stories of the dead from the touch of their skin; disease, wounds, old age, and so on. In the evening she begs in the city's watering holes and is charged to return with three knew pieces of information. She's acquired a friendly cat through whom she can, when she stills her mind, see the people she's spying on.When the Kindly Man asks her for her new intelligence, she tells him that she's figured out that it is him who's been attacking her in the dark. She hits him on the knuckles with her staff. He's amazed that she's figured it out, not noticing the cat prowling the rafters. Interview with Antonia Tricarico. Antonia Tricarico is an incredible photographer who is working on releasing a new book Be My Rebel. At 16, she joined the Feminist Collective of Potenza. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the Law School at La Sapienza University in Rome and became active in the Women's Health Collective in Trastevere. She worked with Paolo Bedini's AZ Music agency, where for nearly a decade she helped bring renowned musicians to Italy. In the 1990s, she was involved in Rome's Rights to Housing movement and supported squatting public buildings with and for immigrants, for their right to housing. In 1997, after moving to the United States, she began pursuing photography more seriously. In the past years, she has worked as an archivist for Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post photographer Lucian Perkins and collaborated with independent labels such as Tolotta Records, Dischord Records, Kill Rock Stars, and Youth Action Research. Her photographs are represented in both private and public collections, including the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution, the permanent exhibition and special collections archive of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC (Punk and Go-Go music archives), the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library at the University of Maryland,the DC History Center, and the Library of Congress. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. His work examines new and alternative religious movements, secularism, and the intersections of religion, politics, and sexuality. He holds a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Pretoria, where his thesis explored sex magick as post-theistic spirituality across Eastern, Western, and African esotericism. He also holds an MDiv (focused on Systematic & Historical Theology) and BDiv (focused on Dogmatics & Christian Ethics).As an advocate for the normalisation and destigmatisation of secularism, alternative religions, and marginalised spiritualities, Tristán engages in public education, media commentary, and community support. His insights have been featured in podcasts, news media, and academic conferences worldwide.He is also the founder of Alterity Counselling, a virtual counselling practice supporting individuals from diverse spiritual and non-religious backgrounds across the globe. Jamey Jasta is an American singer and songwriter from New Haven, Connecticut. He is best known as the lead vocalist of metalcore band, Hatebreed and sludge metal band, Kingdom of Sorrow. Jasta also fronts metalcore band Icepick. Prior to Hatebreed, Jasta fronted the hardcore band Jasta 14.Jasta owns Stillborn Records, a hardcore- and metal-based record-label from West Haven, and "rock-themed apparel"-line called Hatewear.In 2011, Jasta released a solo album entitled Jasta, collaborating with Randy Blythe and Mark Morton (Lamb of God), Zakk Wylde, Philip Labonte (All That Remains), and Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying).Jasta was the host for MTV's Headbangers Ball from 2003 to 2007.Jasta created the music for "Stat of the Day" for the nationally syndicated radio and TV talk show, The Dan Patrick Show. Jasta appeared on air with Dan Patrick on January 25, 2013 discussing the making of the song.Jasta's debut solo album, Jasta, was released on July 26, 2011, through eOne Music.
