His work examines new and alternative religious movements, secularism, and the intersections of religion, politics, and sexuality. He holds a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Pretoria, where his thesis explored sex magick as post-theistic spirituality across Eastern, Western, and African esotericism. He also holds an MDiv (focused on Systematic & Historical Theology) and BDiv (focused on Dogmatics & Christian Ethics). As an advocate for the normalisation and destigmatisation of secularism, alternative religions, and marginalised spiritualities, Tristán engages in public education, media commentary, and community support. His insights have been featured in podcasts, news media, and academic conferences worldwide. He is also the founder of Alterity Counselling, a virtual counselling practice supporting individuals from diverse spiritual and non-religious backgrounds across the globe. His non-profit advocacy with the South African Pagan Rights Alliance (SAPRA)—as an executive member, spokesperson, and interfaith officer—along with his community paralegal work, informs his approach to research, activism, and counselling. In this interview, Tristán discusses portions of his captivating dissertation, titled, “Secret self-knowledge: considering sex magick as post-theistic spirituality in Eastern, Western, and African Esotericism.” Highlights of this engaging discussion include:- Tristán's ideas about a ‘post-theistic spiritual practice,' that distances itself from an external deity and moves toward a non-traditional or non-religious spirituality, with creativity in terms of co-existence between the divine and the individual;- The underrepresentation of Eastern and African regions with regard to esotericism;- The negativity surrounding sexuality and the expression of it, including taboos and fetishes (drawing for example on Foucault);- The inclusion of Conspirituality in this discourse, and how it relates to the notion of the Self;- Examples of Eastern esoteric sexual practices and what these offer with regard to knowledge of the Self;- The issue of colonialism and slavery as it relates to Africana esoteric religions;- How sexuality and the Self are understood in both African Traditional Religion and the Sangoma Tradition;- The syncretic expressions of the African diaspora as found in African-American Conjure or Supernaturalism;- The notion of ubuntu, that states a person is a person because of other people;- His conclusions after all of his research and his future endeavors.PROGRAM NOTESDissertation: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/386987710_Secret_self-knowledge_considering_sex_magick_as_post-theistic_spirituality_in_Eastern_Western_and_African_Esotericism

This week, Emilio, Julian and Madeline set sail with pop culture writer and Spielberg aficionado Mike Duquette aboard to take on 'Jaws', the landmark film that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer. The group discuss what makes this film so unique in film history, Spielberg's maturation as a nascent Hollywood director, the ways in which the novel and the film differ, the iconic Oscar-winning score by John Williams, the underappreciated performances throughout, and what modern blockbusters could learn from the stakes and scopes of this story. It's a lovefest for a timeless film that still feels fresh and captivating today as it did when it first hit theaters a half century ago! Mike Duquette has worked for Legacy Recordings, Rhino Records, Allmusic, Ultimate Classic Rock, Discogs, Observer, uDiscover Music and Mondo Records, where he penned the liner notes to their 40th anniversary vinyl release of John Williams' score to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. He founded The Second Disc, a website devoted to music reissues and box sets, in 2010, and writes about other music, movies and film novelizations at Duque's Delight.Listeners... what's your first memory of watching a Steven Spielberg film? Send us a textLong before the Salem Witch Trials gripped the world's imagination, another true story of witchcraft unfolded in the shadows of early America… and almost no one talks about it.In this episode of Into the Fog, we travel back to 1651, to the Puritan town of Springfield, Massachusetts, where a man named Hugh Parsons was accused of witchcraft—and his wife, Mary, would soon accuse him of consorting with the Devil. What began as whispers about cursed milk and phantom visions soon spiraled into one of the most disturbing—and forgotten—witchcraft cases in early New England. Was there truly something evil in the woods…?Special thanks to historian and author Malcolm Gaskill, whose extraordinary book The Ruin of All Witches inspired this episode.Malcolm also kindly supplied several historical photographs that appear throughout the video. I'll Keep Loving You".

rWotD Episode 2827: All in Love Is Fair (album) Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Wednesday, 29 January 2025 is All in Love Is Fair (album). All in Love Is Fair is a studio album by American singer Nancy Wilson, released by Capitol Records in August 1974. It was her first album with producer Gene Page, who also did the arrangements and conducting and gave the album a more R&B-oriented sound. Musicians on the album include Ray Parker Jr., Wah Wah Watson, and Tom Scott. Marvin Gaye is also listed on the back cover as "The Phantom," with "warmest thanks." All in Love Is Fair includes one of the few songs co-written by Wilson.Jason Ankeny at AllMusic hails Wilson's "sultriness and soulfulness. Page swaddles the singer in billowing strings and slow-burn funk rhythms, weaving a series of luminously sensual backdrops that wouldn't be out of place on Motown or Philadelphia International." He also notes that "the music never veers so far into the mainstream that Wilson abandons her jazz roots entirely, and she brings to the songs the intelligence and articulateness one would expect."All in Love Is Fair peaked at No. 11 on Billboard's Soul LPs chart and No. 97 on the Billboard 200. The song "Streetrunner" reached No. 46 on Billboard's Best Selling Soul Singles. In 2011, SoulMusic Records released a digitally remastered version of the album, paired with Come Get to This, Wilson's next album, which was also produced by Gene Page. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:44 UTC on Wednesday, 29 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see All in Love Is Fair (album) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Patrick.

The Memorial Day weekend brought swarms of tourists to Niagara Falls, eager to celebrate under the sun. Just an hour away, a group of local teens gathered at Wayne Fleet Quarry, diving into the water and marking the unofficial start of summer. Alison and her friends, thrilled to leave the school year behind, decided to up the ante by jumping from an old bridge spanning the quarry. But as they reached the top, something unusual in the water caught their eye: a large, bulky bag emblazoned with "US" in bold, black letters. Curiosity piqued, they made their way down to inspect it. But the water around the bag turned red before they could haul it to shore. This wasn't discarded junk—junk doesn't bleed. Panicked, the teens scrambled up the road, frantically waving down a passing car, whose driver quickly called the police.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘A Body in the River: The Murder of Dr. Paul Campagna.'Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHS.All Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprint.This episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman.Welcome to Yaman the very latest and greatest in J-Beauty innovations Listeners can visit YA-MANUSA.com/discount/TCP for a 20% discountAlso proudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comThe World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com. Today on the Movies We've Never Seen Podcast, Mike is joined by his good friends Michael and famous artist AJ to discuss the acclaimed Greek film Dogtooth. Will they all come to the same conclusion on this one or will it split the party? This episode does contain *SPOILERS* for Dogtooth. This podcast may contain STRONG LANGUAGE and ADULT THEMES. Not Recommended for children. This episode is Rated R. On The Movies We've Never Seen Podcast, we talk about a movie that one or more of the hosts have not seen. In the fist half of the episode, we talk about our pre-viewing thoughts, expectations and impressions about it punctuated by a small trivia quiz and other fun facts. We then give the movie a tentative rating (on a scale of 0-5 Snake Plisskens) based on the discussion. We then come to the intermission, where we take a break and watch the film in question. In the second half we have a similar conversation and discuss our post-viewing thoughts and see how right, wrong or on the nose we were about the film and give it our final rating. All Music used with permission from OHM! Trio. A Single Thread (Bruce) Peachy (Douds) Reprieve Reprise (Bruce) Eh? (Bruce) Some Towns (Bruce) Blackbird (Lennon-McCartney) Wayne -Ish (Douds) Ohm! is the latest project from Cleveland based guitarist Dan Bruce. Featuring original compositions from all three of the group's members, the trio brings high energy original compositions set to forceful and distinctive grooves. Everyone comes out of a performance with a different favorite song, and I'm always hesitant to put a thumb on the scale, but I'd encourage you to pay attention to a piece in this performance called Eh. You've heard Dan Bruce on the program before, for his work in Alla Boara, with his Beta Collective project, his guitar duo sessions with Dan Wilson and as part of the larger Third Law Collective. Dan's collaborators within Ohm are just as noteworthy. Denzel Chismar-Oliver is a multifaceted Pittsburgh based bassist who shares the stage with some of the area's most prominent musicians. Nathan Douds is the quintessential drummer's drummer who workS both in orchestras and as the leader of his own seven piece ensemble. To see Nathan Douds play drums is probably a little bit better than just hearing it but there are few who understand how to do more with the subtilties of the kit than Nathan. So we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. From an October 1st, 2023 performance, it's Ohm! – Live at the Bop Stop. This program is recorded at the Robert Conrad Studios at the Bop Stop in Cleveland, Ohio, and the studios of WBWC FM on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. Additional production at the Bop Stop is provided by Graham Rosen. Technical editing for the program is provided by Dr. Pete Naegele, Shawn Gilbert, and Darren Thompson through Gilazar Media. An impassioned account of the fall and rise of the small American towns she cherishes by Dar Williams. A musician, educator, author, Dar rose out of the vibrant mid-90's Boston scene, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers, Berklee jazz musicians, slam poets, and folk artists, After a year of touring non-stop with her first album, The Honesty Room, in 1994, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. To date she has written 14 albums and 6 books. And we wanted two speak with Dar about one of those books. “What I Found in a Thousand Towns” A Traveling Musician's Guide to Rebuilding America's Communities—One Coffee Shop, Dog Run, and Open-Mike Night at a Time(published in 2017). A beloved folk singer presents an impassioned account of the fall and rise of the small American towns she cherishes. Dubbed by the New Yorker as “one of America's very best singer-songwriters,” Dar Williams has made her career not in stadiums, but touring America's small towns. She has played their venues, composed in their coffee shops, and drunk in their bars. She has seen these communities struggle, but also seen them thrive in the face of postindustrial identity crises. Here, Williams muses on why some towns flourish while others fail, examining elements from the significance of history and nature to the uniting power of public spaces and food. Drawing on her own travels and the work of urban theorists, Williams offers real solutions to rebuild declining communities. What I Found in a Thousand Towns is more than a love letter to America's small towns, it's a deeply personal and hopeful message about the potential of America's lively and resilient communities. Full Episode NotesMy guest this month is Dr. Joel Bordeaux.Joel is a specialist in South Asian religions with a PhD from Columbia University (2015). He has published on East Indian Śākta traditions, early modern Hindu statecraft, Nath Yogi literature from Bengal, and Tibetan Buddhism in Anglophone popular culture. He is a Research Fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden, The Netherlands, and a member of the research group Body and Embodiment in the Middle Bengali Imaginary based at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. As Zeena Schreck, the famous daughter of Anton LaVey of the Church of Satan, was recently interviewed by Jordan Peterson, I immediately thought of Joel and a presentation he gave three years ago about Zeena and her then-husband Nikolas as they relate to Tibetan Buddhism, Tantra and Left-Hand Path practices. I asked Joel if he'd like to re-visit this topic and to flesh it out, further expanding on this, in light of the recent media attention that Zeena has had. He graciously agreed. In this discussion, Joel first gives a background of Anton LaVey & the environment of the Church of Satan wherein Zeena grew up, leading to Zeena taking the role of spokesperson for the Church during the Satanic Panic years, and then the circumstances that led to Zeena leaving the Church to forge her own path. This takes us to other projects that Zeena and Nikolas were involved in, such as Radio Werewolf and the Temple of Set, their break from that group to form their own group called the Sethian Liberation Movement or ‘The Storm'. Joel discusses in more detail the concepts of tantra and left-hand path traditions that are used in their practices and beliefs. Another important factor that is discussed is the role of Traditionalism within all of Zeena's work.In closing we discuss our takeaways from Zeena's interview with Jordan Peterson. I hope you enjoy this conversation! This content is educational in nature. Dr. Carl Jung began to have apocalyptic visions in October 1913 which compelled him to engage a dialogue with his unconscious. In the following months, he transcribed these experiences in his personal journals (Black Books). When World War 1 started in June 1914, Jung realized that his visions, dreams, and meditations may have been precognitions of the impending war. On this minisode, we explore the writings and journals of Dr. Carl Jung to help us better understand this pivotal moment in Jung's life and how it inspired his later psychological theories. ∞∞∞∞∞ Support Creative Codex on my Patreon and get access to the Red Book Reading series, as well as other exclusives including the LIMITED RELEASE SERIES (Kurt Cobain & Jim Morrison), and all the Episode Exclusives: https://www.patreon.com/mjdorian Buy me a coffee or add to my fancy books fund on Venmo: https://venmo.com/code?user_id=3235189073379328069&created=1681912456.228596&printed=1 ———— All Music by MJDorian Written & Produced by MJDorian ———— Connect with me on social media for all the newest updates: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/creativecodex Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mjdorian/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mjdorian TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mjdorian --------- Creative Codex is written & produced by MJDorian.
