We continue our discussion on SE Asian Coffee with Will Frith. We get into the history and rise of Vietnamese Coffee and it's modernization. Will Frith is an American of Vietnamese descent who grew up in Texas. He first came to Vietnam in 2004 to meet his maternal grandparents, and has subsequently split his time between Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and the Pacific Northwest of the United States. He got his start in the coffee business as a barista at MOD Coffeehouse in Galveston, Texas. In 2007 he was hired as a Production Assistant at Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters (now Dancing Goats Coffee) in Olympia, Washington, and would eventually become Production Roaster and QC Specialist at Olympia Coffee Roasters. Welcome back from our vacation. We ended up taking a little extra time off around our vacation, but we're glad to be back for this episode as we talk about blending social circles in order to live a more congruent and integrated life. Between starting an art business, being involved in several different organizations, working at a church and having friends from outside those areas it can be hard to feel like you have many friends that are truly integrated into your whole life. That's our dreams, and what we talk about during most of this episode. One of the things I have done over the last 4 years is connect the dots on different amalgamations of musicians and their actions within a period of time in music when you could find work as a session player, play gigs @ strip clubs and the multitude of venues in every urban center in this country. These amalgamations were everywhere but the cities I have most heavily explored and where these amalgamations seemed to grow off and out of each other have been New York, Chicago, Nashville, Muscle Shoals San Francisco and Los Angeles. My guest is a drummer from Southern California who's laid back style fit perfectly into the white boy blues that washed up In sun splashed LA. He could play folk, ballads with David Blue, bluegrass with Sneaky Pete, and blue eyed soul with Jackson Browne. My guest has a great reputation which is why when Bob Weir came to LA to find a working rhythm section he found one with my guest and Rick Carlos and Brent Mydland on the heels of Silver and Batdorf and Rodney. This unit sparkled and was a great fit for Bobby as he tried to step out of the shadow of the Grateful Dead. Playing a bouncing Poison Ivy that my daughters listen to on the way to school. My guest has seen the industry change. The near impossibility of keeping a unit together is almost unheard of unless you can sell out 30000 seat rock palaces. The values in music and performance reflect that of our society. One of imbalance. My guest still swings the band but provides marriage counseling to help offset this imbalance.

“Stepping off this dirty bus first time I understood It's got to be the going not the getting there that's good That's a thought for keeping if I could, it's got to be the going not the getting there that's good." No need to travel on some cold and dirty bus, thinking is the best way to travel. Travel with me on the Sunday Edition of Whole ‘Nuther Thing, we’ll stay warm and clean and even serve a meal. Today's program features tunes from (not in order of appearance) Batdorf & Rodney, Ben Folds, The Jayhawks, Neil Diamond, Tears For Fears, Seals & Crofts, Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, Eurythmics, Supertramp, Pat Metheny, Elton John, Psychedelic Furs, Tim Hardin, Pink Floyd, Art Garfunkel, Bruce Hornsby, Brewer & Shipley, America, Glen Campbell, Bob Dylan, Pure Prairie League and Harry Chapin.
The success of Batdorf and Rodney was a confluence of factors. They came of age during free form radio. You might here The Flying Burrito Brothers followed by Cannonball followed by Buck Owens. The jam circuit was alive and well for these seasoned woodsheders. They could go coast to coast have a week or more engagement building indigenous fan bases because you were in such close proximity to the band. Along the way they ran into other musicians that influenced their sound and maybe even joined the band. Record companies had cats like Ahmad Ertegan who saw a place in the enclosing record industry for this acoustic electric duo. Let's get me down with the swampers in a Muscle Shoals with Barry Beckett playing vibes. Or back to LA with the likes of Jon Barbata Russ Kunkel and Brent Mydland heating up and cooling down all in sync. These cats weren't playing Lydian scales rather honky blues lighting up movie theaters, playhouses and college campuses. In these times of electronic music one way of coming back to a middle ground is by playing acoustic guitar, with great output but little amplification. The messages are relayed in stories unpackaged or uncorked slowly discriminating into danceable music. Still doing it after 4 decades John Batdorf welcome to the JFS.... --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Even Garth Stein cries over his books. “The Art of Racing in the Rain” is well-known to readers and movie-goers as a tearjerker. Stein says he rented space at a Seattle pizza restaurant when he was writing the book. “I’d get to an emotional part and be crying,” Stein says. “People would be like, ‘What’s wrong with that guy?’ Although published in 2008, Stein says the recent release of the movie with Kevin Costner giving voice to the dog character, Enzo, catapulted the book to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. “When that happened, I told my kids they had to call me ‘Dad, Numero Uno,’” Stein says, adding that his demand was summarily ignored. Co-hosts Kurt Batdorf and Jim Hills get behind the wheel in this episode for a drive with Stein through his experiences with cars, racing and writing novels with strong Pacific Northwest and Alaskan settings. Stein also talks a bit about two upcoming releases, a new novel titled, “A Couple of Old Birds” and a graphic novel involving mutant goat people titled, “The Cloven.” While not autobiographical, Stein says all of his novels include some of himself. Stein says he began with screenwriting as a career target, but found he had a “bizarre allergic reaction to it.” Stein then spent nearly 10 years making documentary films. The foray into documentaries helped, Stein says, because his feeling was, “At age 25, I’m not really, as a writer or a person, mature enough to have anything to say.” He eventually came back to books with his first novel “Raven Stole the Moon,” at age 32. An early love for theater also prompted him to write a play for his high school alma mater, Shorewood High School in Shoreline, Wash., just north of Seattle. So where did the car racing in “The Art of Racing in the Rain” come in? Stein and his family had been living in New York for years when they decided to move back to Seattle. He got involved in racing Mazda Miata cars (something Stein and Batdorf have in common). Stein says it was fun, but became a pull away from his family. He had decided to quit racing, would sell his car, but entered one last race. That race ended for him, he says, “Going backward, 100 miles an hour into a Jersey barrier. “We don’t necessarily recognize our own situation when we’re in it,” Stein says. “If I’d had clarity, I probably would’ve said, ‘You know, today’s not a good day to race.’” Episode length: 59:39 Episode links Garth’s official bio The Art of Racing in the Rain A Sudden Light How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets Raven Stole the Moon Sports Car Club of America Spec Miata Granite Curling Club
When adults used to ask Alex Batdorf what she wanted to be when she grew up, she’d say: “I’m going to rule the world.” I think she wasn’t wrong... this queen is powerful. Alex is a serial entrepreneur, a business strategy coach, and a sought after speaker who helps women entrepreneurs scale their businesses to $1 million. Why? Because when women have the capacity to build highly successful businesses, the entire economy changes. And that’s the change Alex wants to see in the world. In this episode, About getting sh!t done, Alex and I talk about the importance of showing up to do the work to follow your dreams. Hard work doesn’t mean you can abandon self care, and it’s certainly not without its hardships (Alex shares some real struggles of her own). But when you prioritize making your desires a reality, everyone around you can rise with you. Chapter 1 – Hmmm, I didn’t know that about … June and July Once they decide who gets to speak first, podcast co-hosts Ken Harvey, Jim Hills, Cindy Tingley and Paul Pitkin have a bunch of fun chatting about what happens during June and July in the Pacific Northwest and what's new at Sno-Isle Libraries. Two new videos posted on YouTube focus on early literacy tips and how to find great books to read. And June and July have official days for lots of things such as dairy, turkey, candy, flip-a-coin, hug your cat, yo-yo’s, doughnuts, chocolate ice cream, VCRs, Juneteenth and lots more including … Bloomsday! In the interest of full disclosure and righting an ill-informed wrong, one of the hosts (shhh, its Jim) noted that June 16 is called Bloomsday in commemoration and celebration of the life of Irish writer James Joyce. The date is observed annually in Dublin and elsewhere around the world as the day in Joyce’s novel “Ulysses” of protagonist Leopold Bloom’s first outing with his wife-to-be, Nora Barnacle. However, the Bloomsday Run in Spokane is traditionally the first Sunday in May, part of Spokane’s Lilac Festival and not tied to Joyce’s book. At all. Ever. But wait, there’s more! Chapter 2 – Hmmm, I didn’t know that about … Kurt Batdorf Kurt Batdorf is a recent addition to the Communications Dept. at Sno-Isle Libraries. Kurt brings 25 years of journalism experience covering communities within the library district across Snohomish and Island counties. Kurt recalls what it takes to sit through a school board meeting where even the school board members are falling asleep. Kurt even acknowledges that, on occasion, a source may have given him “the stink-eye” after a story was published. Kurt’s experience includes being the editor of a local business publication and started his tenure during the recession that affected many local businesses. Kurt also opines on the difficulties facing journalists today working to bring forth facts that inform communities. And some of the things that Kurt didn't know about Sno-Isle Libraries include the Snohomish Library's Hobbitt painting and just how dedicated library employees are to helping others. Hello and welcome to the Baha’i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha’i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they’re interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode I interview Canadian multidisciplinary artist, performer and creator, Erika Batdorf. Erika's work has received numerous awards and been featured around the world. She was in California attending an SBCAST retreat, so I sat with her and had an amazing conversation about how science and art intersect; her show 'Burnish' and how like all of her work it's inspired by the Baha'i Writings. We discuss how our physical body and the ability to “feel” our body - like the beating of our heart, or even the power of walking - has an effect on our soul. She shares the fascinating story of how she was first introduced to the Baha’i Faith at the age of nine, and how as a teen, she would hitchhike dressed as a clown to get herself to Green Acre. She shares one of her personal struggles, her favorite Baha'i quote, and she also offers some wonderful advice to young Baha'i artists. You can find out more about Erika Batdorf and her fascinating work from her website: BATDORF.ORG Be sure to ‘subscribe’ to the Baha’i Blogcast for more weekly episodes on iTunes, Google Play, or Soundcloud.
