Are you running towards something or running away from it? In this episode, Summer talks about how we can decide to control our destiny, instead of spending our lives simply reacting to circumstances. She shares what it takes to create your dream life and how to stop living through fear. KEY TAKEAWAYS Creating your dream life means you must hunt to discover and achieve and not run from your fears or yourself. The world we live in now makes it easier than ever to succeed, but most people are distracted. It’s easy to continue the patterns you have been following your whole life, it takes a conscious effort to do the work needed to make you and your life better. Life will be hard whether you try or not, we all have the opportunity to choose our hard. If you don’t know what you want, then you can’t manifest it either. God and the universe work with what we give them. BEST MOMENTS "Life is a hunt, you’re either chasing your goals like a lion or running from your fears like a gazelle” “Exert energy that is constructive to the life and the person we desire” “We can either hunt or be hunted” “The more we love ourselves, the more life will love us back" "If you don't hunt the life you desire, the life you could of had will haunt you” HOST BIO I am Summer. He is currently running several global businesses and is an author. His latest book The Dyslexic Edge explores why so many people with dyslexia are successful entrepreneurs and leading thinkers.  It is written for people with and without dyslexia. Everyone who reads it learns how these successful people live, what their mindset is and how anyone can apply a similar approach to their lives. To explore how to get unstuck on your mission, put your purpose into practice and convert your ideas into impact book a discovery call with David here https://calendly.com/david-peoplewithpurpose/30min KEY TAKEAWAYS You don´t need a new idea to start a business. pick something and do it better than the existing providers. Spend time with people you admire to learn. They don´t have to own huge businesses to be great mentors. Businesses that take diversity and inclusion seriously, make better decisions. Businesses need to actively recruit people with dyslexia because they bring a different way of thinking to the table. People with dyslexia see the cause of the problem faster.  People with dyslexia are not afraid of making decisions even when there is not a lot of information available. Seeing things differently often leads to spotting solutions others have missed. BEST MOMENTS “Life is a journey; we have to climb that ladder…just get going. The worst you can do is just do nothing.” “You don't need to be an inventor to become an entrepreneur. Doug is joined by Andrew Dewar, an accountant turned energy healer and life coach. Andrew talks to Doug about his transformative journey and introduces his "Five Year You" program which is designed to help people become their best selves over a five-year period. Andrew offers a fresh perspective on goal setting, personal growth, and living an authentic life in this episode, by sharing what he has learnt is effective, including giving yourself permission to change.  KEY TAKEAWAYS The "Five Year You" program focuses on becoming your best self over five years, taking the pressure off short-term goals and focusing instead on long-term lifestyle changes. Andrew introduces the "Layers of Life" concept, which encourages living from the inside out, starting with your soul's purpose and working outward to relationships and material possessions. You have to learn to give yourself permission to live a good life and make changes that align with your true self, rather than trying to impress others or meet societal expectations. Andrew emphasises the value of making small, consistent changes (1% improvements) in daily habits to create significant long-term results in personal growth and wellbeing. Andrew introduces the "60 Second Rule" as a technique for managing recurring thoughts or concerns, allowing brief focused attention before moving on. Don't underestimate the importance of setting multiple goals beyond your primary objective, to help you maintain motivation and direction after achieving a significant milestone. Andrew shares his big audacious goal of helping a million people become their best selves, don't be afraid of thinking big and taking consistent action towards a vision. BEST MOMENTS "Life is way better when you give yourself permission to live a good life." "When you know who you are, it's been my experience that the right people show up and the right community takes place." "Focus more on the person that you want to become. Then use goals, as you're measuring stops along the way because if you are trying to lose weight for the beach trip you're going on next summer, if you're trying to save up money for a trip, if you're trying to do all these things, that's not changing your identity" "I got to 60 and I was looking out ahead of my life thinking, well, you know, if I get to 80, I've done 75 percent of my life. I've got 25 percent left" "People are rooting for you. And when you get around people that also want to live a great life, it changes" EPISODE RESOURCES Andrew Dewar Your mobile number, include your international code, just in case we need to connect at short notice.: +1 204-999-2153 Website: www.fiveyearyou.com How would you like to be introduced on the podcast?: Andrew Dewar from Five Year You If you are on LinkedIn, and would like us to promote you - please tell us your LinkedIn address?: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-dewar-cpa-cga-4a430b260/ If you are on Facebook, or have a Facebook Group, let us have the links so we can include them in the shownotes.: http://facebook.com/fiveyearyou Do you have a lead magnet that you would like us to share? Angela engages in a frank and candid conversation with the great Andy Ramage, who shares his journey of giving up alcohol and the positive impact it had on his life. Andy discusses his personal experience of transitioning from a high-paced, alcohol-fuelled lifestyle to one focused on health, fitness, and personal growth. He highlights the importance of building healthy habits, setting goals, and staying committed to change, as well as emphasising the significance of overcoming ambivalence towards alcohol and creating a compelling future without it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Encouraging the adoption of healthy behaviours and habits, such as exercise and journaling, can create a positive loop of motivation and success. Recognising that setbacks and failures are a natural part of the journey towards change can help individuals bounce back stronger and continue on their path. By setting clear goals and values, individuals can train their brains to filter out information that aligns with their aspirations, leading to more focused and purposeful actions. Utilising alcohol-free alternatives in social situations can help individuals feel more comfortable and confident while socialising without alcohol. BEST MOMENTS "Life had plateaued a little bit. I'd got early onset heart disease I'd just discovered. My relationships were somewhat strained and it was a real awakening of Actually, what are we all doing? This is nuts." "I think it's ambivalence, that love-hate relationship in our brain with alcohol, which most people carry. So there's that moment of awareness of, actually, I think this is not serving me anymore." "When we can get so caught up in the steps, and that is a necessary part of it, like you say, you have to do the work, but you also have to switch your mind on to what's important." Today, Dawn is interviewing Blair Kaplan Venables, a grief and resilience expert, about her personal journey of overcoming multiple tragedies and building resilience. Blair shares her experiences of losing her father, mother-in-law, mother, and father-in-law in a short period, along with a miscarriage and her husband's health scare. Despite these challenges, Blair discusses her healing journey, including exploring alternative healing methods like plant medicine and witchcraft. She emphasizes the importance of building resilience through practices like gratitude and micro movements, highlighting the power of storytelling in the Global Resilience Project to empower others facing similar struggles. Blair's story serves as a testament to the strength and resilience that can be cultivated even in the face of profound loss and adversity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Setting aside time each day to list three things you are grateful for can rewire your brain to see the world in a more positive way. Progress doesn't have to be drastic. Taking small steps, like getting off the couch or surviving another day, can lead to gradual improvement. Everyone has a resilience muscle that can be strengthened through storytelling and sharing experiences of overcoming challenges. Grief doesn't diminish, but life can be built around it. Layering life around grief and building a new life without the person or thing being grieved is a process that takes time. Healing involves the mind, body, heart, and soul. It's about reconnecting with all aspects of oneself and working towards a sense of wholeness and liberation. BEST MOMENTS "Life is really short. We're not meant to just sit at our computer nine to five. We have this big, beautiful world out there, and if there are things you wanna do, go do it." "I'm going to be doing that the rest of my life. I know that I've only just scratched the surface." "I don't wanna live a life to retire from. I wanna live a life that I love and I'm gonna do till I die." This episode is a beautiful love story, but it also provides practical insights into how to sustain and grow a long distance relationship. KEY TAKEAWAYS For Claudia it really was love at first sight. Long-distant relationships are hard to sustain even when the love is true and deep. The question you have to answer before moving is – is this relationship going to work? If you truly believe they are the one for you, just follow your heart. In this episode, Neil explores the importance of setting goals and the impact they have on personal growth and success. Drawing from his own experiences and insights gained over 25 years in business, Neil emphasises the need for clear, challenging goals that push individuals beyond their comfort zones. He discusses the concept of SMART goals and contrasts them with the BHAG model (Big Hairy Audacious Goals). Neil provides practical advice on how to work towards goals by breaking them down into manageable steps and establishing daily habits that move individuals closer to their desired outcomes.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Setting clear goals is essential for success and personal excellence. Goals act as a rudder, compass, and lighthouse to guide progress towards the desired endpoint. It is crucial to focus on the process of achieving goals rather than just the outcome. Developing a habit of taking daily actions towards the goal can lead to long-term success. Timelining is a valuable technique that can help in achieving goals effectively. BEST MOMENTS "Life without goals, without targets, without direction. You might blunder into something, sometime, but frankly it's a bit of a long shot, isn't it?" "I set goals high for myself and for the people around me because I care. Something to live up to. Something worth going after."  "100% at university probably isn't going to be possible. Not all the time and not in every circumstance."  "The outcome is nothing without the process. So always focus on the process."  "Habits are built in a simple three step model. Cue. Action. Speaking From Our Hearts
What Is The Meaning Of Life? (4) - Paul D. Lowe & James Conroy-Finn

Speaking From Our Hearts

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2024 40:51

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul concludes his conversation with James Conroy-Finn about the meaning of life on a positive, self-empowering note. KEY TAKEAWAYS Getting from where you are now to where you want to be sometimes requires self-reflection & an amount of self-awareness that maybe doesn't come naturally. It can get uncomfortable when we start looking at mental health, depression, bereavement & other life events that can take us off course. Coaching is about helping other people navigate that journey, recognise some things about themselves & plan together to get them to where they want to be. There's something to be said for being content in oneself, not being too beholden to the opinion of others. But there is a balance. If you're a pariah (an arsehole) you're probably not going to do as well in life as if you are kind & decent When talking to people face-to-face & they're talking about their relationship with someone, you can see in their facial expressions things that maybe they aren't articulating. When someone talks about their relationships with 2 different people, they might use certain words to describe 1 person and not for the other. The omission of a word – especially if it aligns with their values – can communicate something about the amount of respect they have for that person or the strength of their relationship. We live by metaphors, it's how we express everything: Life is a journey, move forward, don't spend too much time in the past, look up not down. For some reason we think looking up is celestial, spiritual, aspirational & looking down is solemn, sedentary, depressing. To some degree you see that in people; if someone's got their head down you think they're feeling low. We understand our world through metaphors. You have to be careful using them when coaching, you need to be more clear. BEST MOMENTS ‘Life is a journey we're all on, taking steps towards something. Working out the right place to put your foot requires an understanding of your values'. ‘Jumping in to try & solve someone else's problem isn't always productive or helpful. Sitting back & giving them the opportunity to express their & really hear them is immensely valuable to them'. ‘Find someone you care about & have an interest in & say very little, just listen. There are little things we can do to get them to elaborate & help us understand where they are & where they're trying to get to. Hopefully we can then get them to where they want to be'. ‘Be present & witness what's going on around you'. Jeannette discusses the importance of positive emotions and pleasure, achievement, relationships, engagement, and meaning in achieving happiness. Drawing on research by Dr. Martin Seligman, the former president of the US Psychology Association, Jeannette emphasises the significance of nurturing these aspects in daily life to cultivate a sense of fulfilment and joy KEY TAKEAWAYS Focus on thinking positively and finding joy in both big and small moments. Achievement: Strive for progress and celebrate even small wins to maintain momentum and happiness. Nurture meaningful and positive relationships that bring joy and support. Engagement: Stay engaged in activities that excite and motivate you, leading to a sense of fulfilment. Identify your purpose and reasons for living, as clarity in this area can drive happiness and keep you focused on your goals. BEST MOMENTS "Life is short, so happiness sounds obvious, but actually sometimes we have to work harder at it than we feel logically we should have to." "Relationships, they're so precious and let's not take them for granted. They need to be nurtured, you know, nurtured and really taken care of and appreciate those moments with your loved ones." "Engagement is very closely linked to achievement actually, which is the second point that I spoke about in terms of the ingredients for happiness." "Happiness happens on the way to fulfilment. So let's just bear that in mind. Let's support each other."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Simon Guest, CCO at The CareVoice, who has been instrumental in pioneering a differentiated approach to growth in the healthcare sector. Under his guidance, The CareVoice will focus on creating multifaceted platforms that benefit from the network effect, where each new user or partner amplifies the cumulative value and utility of the ecosystem. Join us as we dive into the intricacies of orchestrating growth ecosystems for market differentiation, the power of behavioural science in healthcare, and the innovative strategies that have positioned The CareVoice as a leader in personalized health engagement. Simon's insights promise to be invaluable for anyone looking to understand the future of healthcare and the role of digital ecosystems in driving sustainable value creation. KEY TAKEAWAYS I've spent more than 20 years working in life & health insurance in various roles & countries. On one hand you become a bit frustrated that some of the problems are still the same, but the advancement of technology & the macroclimate of the focus on health & wellness brings opportunities to bear for life & health insurers. They need to look fundamentally at changing their proposition into digital health and wellness not only for brand & marketing purposes but to change the relationship with their clients & have an impact on their results. What's important, in our experience is that you find someone that has an open ecosystem approach, that has the best services that you can find inn the market & will constantly evolve that. We think that we're playing that role between build & buy but in the end the end consumer gets the best & most critical experience. BEST MOMENTS ‘Life & health insurance companies have to move to a situation where they are offing end-to-end prevention & digital health cure services in one orchestrated way & then provide the insurance behind that if their client needs it.' ‘There are not that many products where you ask people to pay a lot of money for 20 years in the hope that they never use that product. Fundamentally we have to change the value proposition for customers in this industry.' ‘When it comes to health you can't make any mistakes.' ABOUT THE GUEST Simon Guest is CCO at The CareVoice which provides Digital Health & Wellness Solutions for Insurers. Simon's journey in the insurance industry is marked by significant achievements & a deep understanding of Life and Health Insurance. His tenure at global giants like Generali & AXA has endowed him with unparalleled expertise in leading Global Protection & Health Business lines. This experience has not only honed his skills in driving strategy & commercial results but also provided him with a comprehensive view of insurance markets worldwide. Between 2014-2022, Simon helmed Generali Engagement Solutions as its CEO, where he was instrumental in forging and leading a groundbreaking partnership with Discovery. This collaboration brought the Vitality shared value wellness proposition to seven European markets, showcasing Simon's ability to leverage innovation, partnerships, & ecosystems. His 'start-up' mentality has been key in delivering exceptional customer propositions, setting new benchmarks in the industry. Dr. Ching encourages listeners to take control of their lives and not let circumstances dictate their outcomes. Take massive action and do the hard things first. Change your beliefs and identity to achieve breakthroughs. Work on your state, story, and strategy to create positive change in your life. He shares personal experiences and encourages listeners to embrace their own journeys, finding strength and growth through hardships.  KEY TAKEAWAYS The story of Thomas Edison and Ernest Hemingway serves as a reminder that setbacks and tragedies are a part of life, but it is important to persevere and rebuild. Jeannette discusses the concept of going backwards in order to go forwards in life and business. She shares personal examples from her career and life where she had to take a step back or sideways in order to ultimately move forward. From struggling to find a job after graduating to making a sideways move to a different industry, she emphasises the importance of embracing change and learning from setbacks KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes in life and business, it is necessary to go backwards in order to go forwards. This means that setbacks or taking a step back can actually lead to future progress and growth. Life is not always a straight path, and there can be many different routes and choices to make. It is important to keep it real and share our journeys authentically, as success is not always linear. Going backwards or sideways can provide an opportunity for reflection and gaining clarity. It allows us to reassess our goals and identify alternative options that may lead to greater success. Embracing setbacks, rejections, and failures as learning experiences is crucial. These moments can provide valuable lessons and pave the way for future opportunities. BEST MOMENTS "Life isn't always a straight path... we might have a perfect plan, but then it doesn't quite work out that way” "I had to go backwards in order to go forward... I graduated with a first, but then had to take any job I could get." "Not everything is rosy in the garden, you're going to get knockbacks, you're going to get rejections, you're going to fail loads, just accept it, embrace it, take it as learning." "Do not worry if you need to go backwards to go forward... the worst thing you can do is sit in a situation which you're not happy with, you're not progressing, you're not getting the results that you want."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Jeannette shares the lessons she has learned at the crossroads of her life, and discusses the key decisions she has made and the challenges she has faced, offering support, guidance, and inspiration.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Don't be afraid of making decisions at critical points in your life. These crossroads can lead to new directions and opportunities. Taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to personal and professional growth. Embrace opportunities that may seem challenging or unfamiliar. Believe in your abilities and don't let self-doubt hold you back. Recognise your accomplishments and focus on your strengths. Reflect on what brings you joy and fulfilment in life. Discover your purpose and align your actions and decisions with it. BEST MOMENTS "Life is tough. Business is tough. Not everything goes well, but it's how we deal with it that's so important, isn't it?" "Don't be afraid of failure. Sometimes it's by really just embracing that and go, well, how bad can it be? Unless someone is going to die in this situation, anything else from that is upside." "Sometimes the stories that you tell yourself can be the most damaging and can really constrain you." KEY TAKEAWAYS Life is always giving us signs and signals to show us when something is not working or when we are on the right path. Connecting to our inner child and releasing suppressed emotions and blockages is essential for personal growth and finding true happiness. Balancing high-pressure jobs with spiritual practices, such as meditation or mindfulness, is crucial for maintaining a state of balance and well-being. Combining spirituality and religion is possible as long as it aligns with your own beliefs and allows for a direct connection to your higher self and divine energy. Creating a space of beauty and harmony, whether through light colours, nature, crystals, or candles, can enhance our spiritual practices and bring a sense of peace and joy. BEST MOMENTS "Life is always talking to you, it's always bringing you signs that something is not working or something. Or when something is working, when you are on your soul path, you feel so much abundance and so much flow and doors opening." "Pressure comes from the fact that you don't believe in yourself and you don't believe in life as a giver." "If you're doing any practice that is telling you you have an obligation to do something that goes against your heart and you feel it, you feel obliged, you feel it's heavy, you feel it doesn't work for you, you have to stop because that means that you are under the influence of something that is limited, that is human, and that has nothing to do with God." "Success is not about what you get. It's exactly about knowing who you are and expressing who you are." "Beauty is harmony. I think that I have a different way to see beauty. But if I'm going in a hotel, for example, I need some energy reminders, you know, like crystals. I bring a little crystal. I bring a little goddess that I travel, that is always travelling with me."   GUEST RESOURCES www.karenruimy.com www.kalmarlifestyle.com  www.sadlerswells.com/whats-on/house-of-flamenka-2023 Karen's Instagram   ABOUT THE HOST NATALIYA LLOYD is a Design Entrepreneur & Celebrity Podcaster based in London and working globally.   CONTACT DETAILS You can connect with Nataliya on: LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/nataliyalloyd Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nataliyalloyd_official/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NataliyaLloydInteriors/ Her website www.nataliyalloydinteriors.comThis show was brought to you by Progressive Media

Once she embraced change, she received her first commission which led to her finding an agent. Anna talks about how much she has learned from drawing books as opposed to single pieces of art and shares her knowledge on how you can create better images that will flow as a story.  BEST MOMENTS“Life is too short to not do the thing you really want to do.”“You can't take success for granted. Packed with incredible advice and actionable tips you can learn from, join Rob for another round with Dr Joe.   KEY TAKEAWAYS A key rule is to be at peace with money. Most people think money is bad or it's evil, or it corrupts. You're not going to attract it with that mindset. The difference between being rich and being wealthy. Wealth is what you have left over after you've lost all your money. Wealth is who you become and what you learn. And the riches is just the money. The external results. All debt is not bad. Debt is often used as leverage to accomplish something bigger. Something that you may not have the immediate funds for. Don't fear it, learn to use it like any tool, correctly. To make the actions easier, Accelerate them make them more profound. Take what your desires to the esoteric internet. That means not only having the thoughts about them and the visions about them, but you have to go to the subconscious mind. Then you have to go to the unconscious mind. Then you have to go to the collective unconscious and right below that is this field of all possibility. It is the fourth dimension. It is the field of consciousness where nothing yet has been formed. There, you can hold anything you desire. The search for meaning is still very much the Victor Frankl approach. And we think life has meaning and we're waiting for life to tell us what the meaning is. We're the ones that have to provide the meaning for me. You have to experience life to find its meaning. You have to take action. Joe says “ I've often said that I've written 80 books. If I just sat down and visualize them, they wouldn't be. At some point I have to get up from the visualization, walk over to my, in the old days, the typewriter, these days, the computer, and start typing.” BEST MOMENTS  “Life is movement. So when you have an idea for a product or service, what you want to do is act on it as fast as you can.” “I got to tell people that one of the biggest reasons they don't have money is that they think it's evil unconsciously.” “Wealth is what you have left over after you've lost all your money” “Money reveals you money, doesn't change you, money reveals you. Creating A Better World It's A Question Of HOW (4/4) - Paul D. Lowe & Paul Kelly

Paul is joined once more by Paul ‘PK' Kelly for the second episode in their series discussing how we can look at changing three areas of our lives; Health, relationships with Others and Wealth, to create a better world for ourselves. This conversation covers wanting to change the world and creating a better world through wealth in more ways than just financial wealth. KEY TAKEAWAYS To a lot of people wealth has monetary connotations, but it can have far deeper meaning; we can have emotional wealth and spiritual wealth as well. Having a routine that allows you the space and time to operate at your highest level is key if you want to do lots of projects or run a business, for example. It's about stetting a structure to your day. We need to assess where we're at and where we want to be every day, we need to assess out mental health and stress levels, assess how much of a balance we're getting, are we having rest and relaxation time? Otherwise we'll get tired and stressed when things don't go our way. There's a great tranquillity when water is still and calm. If you can recreate that in your mind – for 10-15 minutes a day – it gives you the space you need to re-focus and re-energise. It promotes good well-being. BEST MOMENTS ‘Life's about getting everything in balance, don't chase money to the detriment of everything else.' ‘Having a positive, growth mindset will attract positive people and good things will start to happen.' ‘I love silence and peace and quiet, it's essential to reflect or be still.' ‘Health must come first before we can be in a healthy relationship or strive for financial reward and success.' From starting primary school, Paul was always a keen sportsman, excelling at swimming, football, chess and cricket, and establishing himself as a regular in the Nottinghamshire (UK) cricket set-up, his grandmother decided to give Paul the opportunity to go to a private school to play his beloved sport; something he continued in Australia. On his return to England, Paul was attacked after a night out and hospitalised, suffering temporary blindness, a double fractured skull and memory loss. After 10 days in a coma, he awoke and started to rebuild his life: but encountering severe depression, suicidal thoughts, paranoia and heavy drinking binges. With the help of family, the NHS, friends, and cricket friends, step-by-step, Paul began the road to recovery and happiness – a 25-year roller-coaster journey. Business, Wealth And Mindset Podcast

Alex reflects on the principles and philosophy of Alfred Adler and ‘The Courage to be Disliked' He shares how if the human goal is to belong and feel significant this can be achieved through understanding separation of task, self-acceptance, confidence in others and making a contribution to society. When you concentrate on the things you can control, understand that life is a journey with every aspect to be enjoyed and make a contribution that brings you freedom you will be able to successfully live in the moment and bring meaning to the world.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Understand the separation of tasks – the areas you are responsible for and those that are the tasks of others. Self-acceptance - you need to accept that everyone is individual and accept yourself as an irreplaceable individual. Confidence in others – you need to have a holistic view and treat others as comrades Have confidence that others will behave in a way that is in accordance with their beliefs, values and who they are. Contribution to society - we can contribute in many different ways and on many levels, our presence itself is a contribution to society. Freedom is what we can feel from making a contribution and helping others. Freedom is self-worth and feeling that you are making a contribution without any contribution from others Life has no meaning apart from the meaning we place on it. People give different meaning to the world because of how they see situations differently. Concentrate on the negative and this is how you will see the world but you can change your view through what you do, how you contribute.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Life is a dance and you have to enjoy every step and movement; it's about living in the moment' ‘Concentrate on the things you can control. What others think of us is not our task' ‘The way that you feel should be based on what you are doing without approval from others'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series    The Courage to be Disliked - Ichiro Kishimi, Fumitake Koga   ABOUT THE HOST   Alex is a prize-winning chartered accountant with experience in financial markets from trading finance, capital hedging, structural foreign exchange and interest rates to operational risk from the world's top financial and advisory institutions including Deloitte, RBS and JPMorgan Chase Alex has been involved in property development programmes across different types since 2008, building and managing a portfolio that includes standard buy-to-lets, student accommodation and other houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs). This week's special guest is Andy Salkeld, the author of ‘Life Is A Four Letter Word', a mental health survival guide for professionals, who joins Lucinda to talk about his own journey through mental health challenges and how we should be breaking the stigma of mental health. Furthermore, Andy shares how he used those experiences to write his highly insightful book, and how we can take those lessons and translate them to our own workplaces. KEY TAKEAWAYS We always seem to introduce ourselves as what we do, instead of who we really are. Indeed, we often find the truth about people to be overwhelming, and yet the truth reveals the person. Certainly, in the workplace, success is often based around competitiveness. We are gently urged to be the best and most accessible version of ourselves. But this can come at a price: the loss of identity. Often, mental health issues are kept hidden because those with issues do not perceive that the workplace will be friendly to these concerns. It's about changing that perception, and making everyone feel as though these challenges will not count against them. White label solutions will not repair the damage of stigmatisation. We need to act with integrity, and create holistic solutions that alter the culture in the workplace, along with the perception that speaking out will not stigmatise. BEST MOMENTS ‘Life is one of two halves - so here's the other half…' ‘You have to stand out in the ways that the business wants you to stand out - not necessarily in the ways that you want to stand out' ‘It's a pressure-cooker of competition' ‘People are the most valuable asset in the business' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney www.changesuperhero.com HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/ Andy Salkeld - https://andysalkeld.com/our-team/andy/Life Is A Four Letter Word by Andy Salkeld Latest Performance Management Blog Additional resources here: 5 Steps to Boost Employee Energy 10 Tips for Managers to Encourage Wellbeing 11 Ways to Enhance your Wellbeing How to Prioritise Self-Care Worksheet   ABOUT THE GUEST   Andy Salkeld describes himself as living a life of two halves. At least he did until he almost ended them both. Andrew Salkeld is a Chartered Accountant and member of the ICAEW. He trained at PwC specialising in Corporate. Following his move into industry he focused on business intelligence and analytics. Now, after numerous industry positions he is a Finance Director at a Leeds based tech business with ambitions of helping the high-street fight back. Sounds pretty good doesn't it? Sounds like he has it all figured out! But there's two halves to this story. Andy was diagnosed with depression a number of years ago. Following various events, he became suicidal and wanted to end everything. His life now has an almost end. He is medicated and regularly speaks to a therapist. Indeed, he does what he can to survive and now shares his story and experience with people all over the world in the hope that those that might be struggling and are too afraid to talk about it, like he once was, know that they are not alone. Andy first shared his story in Breaking the Stigma and has since gone on to publish it in Life is a Four-Letter Word. Andy describes himself as a geek. He loves board games, pop punk and ska music, enjoys cooking and being creative. He lives with his cat Pika and tries to enjoy life in the present, rather than worrying about the past and the future. Still everything from that first introduction. It just isn't what defines him anymore. THE MORE I WANT THE MORE I WILL ACHIEVE,  THE VALUE OF A MISSION STATEMENT      In this episode, Steven shares his own mission statement and explains the importance of a mission statement in the achievement of your goals and becoming the very best version of yourself.   This episode is a great way to understand the significance of a good mission statement and the key elements you should include.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  It's very difficult to become the very best version of you if you don't have your goals and visions in check and have some excitement and passion.  My mission statement is like an affirmation or incantation. It's a business plan that you read out to yourself.  Read it to yourself first thing in the morning to prepare your mind for the day and at the end of the day because this will mean that even if your day is challenging you will be able to get it into perspective.  Life will throw challenges at you, some will be easy, and some will be major, your mission statement will help you to get through.  My mission statement is written at the end of the year ready for the next year. You can take ownership by using ‘my' this will help your subconscious mind feel it, see it and then it will manifest into your  life.  Your subconscious mind won't believe in what you are saying unless you say it with conviction, energy, enthusiasm and excitement.  The main person you need to sell to is yourself. If you were pitching a product to someone else  in a weak way you would not be successful in achieving the sale.  Review your mission statement during the year to see if you are becoming the person you want to be.  By saying your mission statement frequently, you are conditioning your mindset every day and you will attract the best people into your life. You must also go out there and work your plan as well.       BEST MOMENTS  ‘Life for me is bigger than that'    ‘This is like a shot of espresso to pick you back up, do it relentlessly'    ‘You will have a natural energy around you'    ‘Even the things that some may regard as a failure are actually a  win'  ‘I hope it will give you some direction to help you in your life'    ‘This will attract the very best people into my life which huge opportunities will undoubtedly manifest from, like attracts like'    ‘Vision boards and a mission statement keep you accountable'    ‘A mission statement is about characteristics'       VALUABLE RESOURCES  https://www.woodburyhouseart.com/  https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-steven-sulley-study-podcast/id1434828547?mt=2   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1pbXdmYJkgm4uvVmXIFyvA     ABOUT THE HOST  The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success.
