My guest this week is Dee Gibson, a London based, residential interior designer with nearly 20 years of experience working with private, residential clients and focusing on whole house refurbishments and extensions. In 2018, Dee opened Kalukanda House, a boutique hotel in Sri Lanka which she designed and built. But life wasn't always how she designed it to be.Dee started out doing engineering followed by accountancy, but it wasn't where her heart was, and after the accountancy firm she worked for (a top 5 global practice over 100 years old) went under, and friend died, she decided to do a life makeover. She retrained in Interior design and found what she was looking for. This is what she was meant to be doing. She built her practice and developed her style. She kept this message at the centre of her work “ How can I make people happy, add value and leave a positive impact?”  She thinks about a space differently, sources ethically, the longevity of a scheme, and how it can benefit communities. She joined the BIID sustainability committee in order to help drive thinking and build sustainable policies, & business contributes to a charity in Sri Lanka empowering abused women and girls through safe housing and education. It is in her homeland of Sri Lanka that she also built another dream: Kalukanda House, a boutique hotel that reflected her values of design and ecological responsibility. Dr. Jessica Lubahn is a urologist, health writer, and consultant. She is also the founder of ONDRwear, an apparel company that sells luxe leakproof underwear. Jessica tells me that she created this company to destigmatize urinary, menstrual, and other leakage through the creation of products that are highly effective and beautiful.  Dr. Lubahn received her medical degree at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Then, she completed her surgical internship and urology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Here are the major steps that Jessica followed in creating her new apparel company: Identify a problem experienced by her patients. Create the prototype of a potential solution, in this case, a tangible product. Research the industry, network, and determine if creating the product is feasible. Establish the business, and engage an accountant, attorney, and other necessary professionals. For her physical product, create a design or blueprint and find a manufacturer. Create a website and social media accounts, and develop a marketing plan. Start selling the product. The process Jessica followed is quite similar to the way that Greg Hanson started his business in last week’s episode #170. If you’d like to check out the Onderwear company, go to ondrwear.com. From the spark of an idea to where they are now, tune in every month to hear the stories that we can’t get enough of. This month, we took a trip to visit the Green Weigh... Who are the Green Weigh? The Green Weigh began as an idea between four friends. Fed up with hearing about the environmental damage the human race was inflicting on the planet through single use plastic, the Green Weigh ladies began making changes in their own lives by reducing their plastic consumption. They started by visiting the UK’s first zero waste shop located in Totnes for a zero waste consultancy. This sparked their own zero waste dream. They envisioned a world where they could bring waste free shopping to the people of West Dorset, reducing the impact on the planet, and connecting their community. In June 2018 they took to Crowdfunder with an aim to raise £16,000. Spurred on by the hundreds of positive comments on their crowdfunding page, Libby, Kate, Lora, and Alex knew they were on the right track. In the end they surpassed their initial target and went on to raise £17,521 from 313 supporters in just 35 days! Through this amazing effort, the South West’s first mobile zero waste shop was born. In Wessex FM’s Local Business Awards 2018, they won the award for the Best New Business! What’s the big deal about zero waste? Plastic is beginning to swamp our planet. In fact, it is estimated that 8 million tons of plastic is dumped in our oceans each year, harming our wildlife. 40% of our plastic is single use plastic which means it will only be used once before it’s disposed of. From there it will end up in landfills, oceans, or in the stomachs of our wildlife. Earlier this year an island of plastic waste was spotted floating in the sea, measuring several dozen miles long. How can you help the plastic problem? As you’ll hear in our podcast, even the smallest changes can have a big impact. Switching to a bamboo toothbrush or buying your fruit and veg unwrapped could be the start of a real change. 53% of people reported a drop in their use of single use plastic which means we’re beginning to see a big change. In fact, Crowdfunder has seen an increase of projects and campaigns which are focusing on zero waste or a reduction in plastic. Why not check out Jar, a zero waste shop which hopes to open in Plymouth, the Good Weigh which has already secured a premises in Lady Bay, Nottingham, or the Harmless Store which is hoping to move to a bigger space due to demand. With the recent addition of a children’s book focusing on the plastic problem, a better future seems more attainable. Tune in for our future podcasts to hear more amazing stories!

As an eCommerce owner, wouldn’t it be a dream if the retailers that stock your product paid to advertise your it, rather than you having to pay to advertise them? This week on the Exposure Ninja Digital Marketing Podcast, we’re talking with Solillas founder Jonnie Matthew. A former winner of the Best New Business award at the Drapers Footwear Awards, Solillas,  a Menorcan sandal company, has managed something that few original independent fashion brands ever do, but many want to: get stocked widely in high street retailers, from Urban Outfitters to Topshop, Office, Selfridges and House of Fraser and even in the US. Jonnie dropped by to discuss how he’s taken his company’s brand from selling a few pairs at markets to getting it to where it is now. If you are an eCommerce owner or about to launch a fashion brand and dream to see your product on the high street, then this podcast episode is for you! Each review comes complete with a tailored plan to increase your leads and sales online.
