In today's episode of Two Old Bloggers - a lot of Minnesota Vikings fans are looking ahead to next week with a possible matchup with the 7-1 Buffalo Bills. They need to work on the Washington Commanders first. Your Vikings are playing the Commanders and have to beat them to continue their winning streak. The Bills play the NY Jets and will have to do the same thing, but this pregame show focuses on the contest against the Commanders. Darren and Dave will be focusing on three things with the first being, does the TJ Hockenson trade make the Vikings a Super Bowl contender? The second is that the Vikings need to play better, especially at three positions: cornerback, right guard, and kicker. Cameron Dantzler, Ed Ingram, and Greg Joseph all need to improve, but the whole team does as well so that it can punch above its weight. Thirdly we're here to break down the Vikings versus Commanders game. Can the screen door-kicking Taylor Heinicke lead his team against one of the hottest teams in the NFC and win? We hope not, and will explain why. Find out why on today's show. This and more today on 2OB. Here are the themes for the show: Theme #1: Does the T.J. Hockenson trade make the Vikings a Super Bowl contender? Theme #2: Vikings who have to play better Theme #3: Vikings at Commanders Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. Both started public commentary on the Vikings two decades ago on various blogs. They now do it via live streams on YouTube and Facebook. Yankees manager Aaron Boone won his gamble by starting Nestor Cortes on three days’ rest over Jameson Taillon, making the late switch after Monday night’s rainout. Cleveland starter Aaron Civale struggled. With two on and two outs in the ninth and ace Gerrit Cole warming up in case, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres stepped on the bag to end it, then mimicked rocking a baby with the ball — a jab at Guardians slugger Josh Naylor, who made the motion rounding the bases after a homer off Cole in Game 4. The Warriors, long committed to social issues far beyond basketball, celebrated their fourth championship in eight years. Griner is awaiting a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. NFL – Colts owner Irsay says there’s "merit to remove" Snyder Colts owner Jim Irsay says there’s “merit to remove” Dan Snyder as owner of the Washington Commanders. Irsay is the first NFL owner to publicly state that his controversial counterpart should go. Snyder’s status has been widely debated for years amid several scandals and investigations into workplace conduct in Washington. The league has been investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and financial impropriety, a probe conducted by attorney Mary Jo White that is ongoing. Removing Snyder would requires 24 votes from the other owners. NFL – NFL says it’s not backing down on protecting quarterbacks The NFL isn’t backing down on protecting quarterbacks. League executive Troy Vincent said there was a healthy and spirited conversation with owners about roughing-the-passer penalties at the league’s fall meeting. A pair of disputed roughing penalties in Week 5 frustrated defensive players and had players, coaches and fans questioning what constitutes a legal hit. NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay said the conversation on making roughing-the-passer calls reviewable lasted about 30 seconds and needs more discussion. NFL – Prime Video will add Black Friday game to NFL package in ’23 The NFL has announced that Amazon Prime Video will stream a game on Black Friday beginning next season. The game will take place on Nov. 24, 2023, and will kick off at 3 p.m. ET. The teams will be announced in early May when the regular-season schedule is expected to be released. Prime Video is in its first season as the exclusive carrier of “Thursday Night Football” and will expand to 16 games next season. The package goes through the 2033 season. NFL – Bears waive backup receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette The Chicago Bears have waived receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette. Smith-Marsette got his first significant playing time in the offense in Chicago’s 29-22 loss at Minnesota two weeks ago and committed two costly mistakes. He had the ball taken away from behind by Cameron Dantzler at the Vikings 39 following a reception on the Bears’ final drive to decide the game. He also got flagged for an illegal block from behind on a 52-yard scramble by quarterback Justin Fields, negating a TD.   NHL – Bettman: NHL salary cap may get nice bump for ’23-24 season The NHL salary cap could be going up more than expected sooner than expected. Commissioner Gary Bettman says there’s a chance players could be finished paying off what they owe owners from pandemic revenue losses as soon as this season. That would mean the cap going up $4 million or more next summer after being mostly flat for several years. Bettman expects the players’ debt to certainly be paid off next season, allowing for a significant cap increase going into 2023-24. The cap has only gone up $1 million to $82.5 million since the pandemic began.  NHL – NHL, its workforce 84% white, sets baseline to up diversity The NHL for the first time has done an internal demographic study of its staff and all 32 teams. The results suggest hockey has a lot of work to do to increase diversity. It found that 83.6% of the NHL’s workforce is white and that men make up nearly 62% of the total. That mirrors the situation on the ice. More than 90% of players and nearly all coaches and officials are white. NHL executive Kim Davis called the study a good start and a baseline from which the league can improve. Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points and Grant Williams finished with 15 as the defending Eastern Conference champions gave interim coach Joe Mazzulla a victory in his debut. James Harden had 35 points — his most since joining the 76ers last season — including 12 of 12 from the free throw line. He also had five 3s. Joel Embiid added 26 points and 15 rebounds. Tyrese Maxey finished with 21 points. Warriors 123, Lakers 109 – Stephen Curry, Warriors celebrate championship, beat Lakers Stephen Curry opened the season with 33 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and the Golden State Warriors beat LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers 123-109 after receiving their championship rings in a pregame ceremony. Tonight Orlando Magic at Detroit Pistons, 7:00 p.m. Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat, 7:30 p.m. NBA/WNBA – Stephen Curry offers Warriors’ support of Brittney Griner Stephen Curry took the microphone in the middle of Golden State’s championship ring ceremony Tuesday night to make an impassioned plea in support of Brittney Griner as the WNBA star spent her 32nd birthday in a Russian prison. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs Last Night ALDS – Best of 5 New York Yankees 5, Cleveland Guardians 1                              (NYY wins 3-2) Yankees 5, Guardians 1 – Stanton, Judge HR, Yankees beat Guards, into ALCS vs Astros Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge staggered Cleveland with early homers, and the New York Yankees rocked past the Guardians 5-1 in the decisive Game 5 of their AL Division Series to set up another rematch with Houston for the pennant. NLCS – Best of 7 Philadelphia Phillies 2, San Diego Padres 0                                       (PHI leads 1-0) Phillies 2, Padres 0 – Harper, Schwarber HR as Wheeler, Phils top Pads to open NLCS Bryce Harper homered again, Kyle Schwarber hit a jaw-dropping, 488-foot drive and Zack Wheeler was brilliant in throwing one-hit ball for seven innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the San Diego Padres 2-0 in the opening game of the all-wild card NL Championship Series. Wheeler and two relievers combined on a one-hitter for the Phillies, who will try to take a 2-0 lead when they send Aaron Nola to mound to oppose Blake Snell on Wednesday afternoon. Harper homered in his third straight playoff game. Today League Championship Series – Best of 7 Philadelphia (Nola 11-13) at San Diego (Snell 8-10), 4:35 p.m.             (PHI leads 1-0) New York (Taillon 14-5) at Houston (Verlander 18-4), 7:37 p.m.           (Game 1) NBA – National Basketball Association – Regular Season Openers Last Night Boston Celtics 126, Philadelphia 76ers 117 Golden State Warriors 123, Los Angeles Lakers 109 Celtics 126, Sixers 117 – Tatum, Brown each score 35, Celtics beat 76ers 126-117 Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each scored 35 points and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 126-117 in the opening game of the NBA regular season. Jordan Poole made a pretty bounce pass assist to a driving Draymond Green for a layup and all seemed perfectly well with the defending champions almost two weeks after Green punched Poole at practice Oct. 5 then took a brief leave of absence from the team to work on his emotions. Poole wound up with 12 points and seven assists. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Ohio State, Michigan making Big Ten look like Big Two Ohio State and Michigan are making the Big Ten look like the Big Two, rekindling memories or some of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler turning the chase for a conference championship into a two-team race. The second-ranked Buckeyes and fourth-ranked Wolverines are the Big Ten’s only undefeated teams. No other team in the conference is ranked among the top 15. Penn State can potentially be a factor in the because it hosts Ohio State on Oct. 29. The 16th-ranked Nittany Lions will have to play much better than they did while getting pummeled at Michigan. NCAAWBKB – South Carolina women unanimous No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 South Carolina is the unanimous No. 1 team in the preseason AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll. The defending national champions went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team last year and have been the top team for 20 straight weeks. Stanford, Texas, Iowa and Tennessee round out the top five. UConn is sixth, the first time since 2006 that the Huskies aren’t in the first five in the preseason poll. Louisville, Iowa State, Notre Dame and N.C. State is the rest of the top 10. NASCAR – NASCAR suspends Bubba Wallace 1 race for Las Vegas crash NASCAR has suspended driver Bubba Wallace for one race following his fracas at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend. NASCAR determined that Wallace deliberately spun reigning champion Kyle Larson in a dangerous move of retaliation. Wallace will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Golf – PGA – Elevated events show a divide among PGA Tour events for ’23 A person with direct knowledge of the plans says the PGA Tour is announcing that four tournaments will have elevated status and $20 million purses next year. The four additions are the WM Phoenix Open, the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, the Wells Fargo Championship and the Travelers Championship. That leads to an incredibly crowded schedule. Texas-born Jordan Spieth figures to play five straight weeks in May and seven out of eight weeks. And that includes two majors. Two of the events are the week after a major. Not since Tiger Woods in 2006 has someone won a tournament the week after winning a major. The Minnesota Vikings have completed mini camp and the team is on vacation, but that doesn't mean things stop here. Two Old Bloggers with Darren and Dave discussing interesting Vikings storylines as we head towards training camp.  The analytics and statgasm folks are all excited about Cameron Dantzler. Inspired by Will Ragatz's piece earlier in the week, it turns out The Needle overall looks pretty damn effective as a cornerback. This is both against the pass and especially against the run. That is something the Ed Donatell defense will need. Exactly how effective was he? Is Dantzler the best CB on the team? What does that mean for Patrick Peterson and first-round draft pick Andrew Booth? We take a deep dive and deep thoughts on the forgotten players. Who are they? They are the ones chosen in mid to late rounds by the previous administration that saw little or no time in games. Are they worth their selections if they were just long-term prospects? Were they just ignored by Mike Zimmer who was in win-now mode and Rick Spielman went rogue? 2OB will look at those great unknowns. DJ Wonnum had the most sacks of his career last year. A lot of fans think that he's a rising star because of it, but is he? Could he be forgotten when all is said and done at the end of training camp? What does Ed Donatell want him to do? What does he need to do to convert to a 3-4 defensive outside linebacker, a rush edge? Can he do it?   Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. Both started their public commentary on the Vikings two decades ago on various blogs. They now do it via live streams on YouTube and Facebook. We appreciate your team fandom and that you take the time to enjoy it with us. Here are the themes for the show: Theme #1: The analytics crowd loves Cameron Dantzler [inspired by @WillRagatz]  Theme #2: The great unknowns Theme #3: Will D.J. Wonnum be the forgotten man of the Vikings defense? Vikings: Improving At The Margins? | CTP's In The Huddle

Your Minnesota Vikings signed a couple of players yesterday. They signed Jesse Davis, who played right tackle for the Miami Dolphins but will look to start at the right guard position. It is assumed that both Wyatt Davis, last year's 3rd round draft choice, and Oli Udoh will compete with him for the position. Was it the improvement you all hoped for? If the Vikings had available cap space before recently, would they have targeted someone who grades better and that the fans are angry about losing? Or would they have targeted Davis, where Dolphin fans rejoice that he is off their team? What does this mean for the offensive line? Does it conform with Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's slogan for this year, “Improve on the margins.”? The Vikes also signed cornerback Nate Hairston from the Denver Broncos and re-signed their practice squad corner, Tye Smith. Both of these players are supposed to fight for a spot on the team with no guarantees that they can even accomplish that. Cornerback numbers are looking better, but there is still a lack of quality starters. There is hope that Cameron Dantzler and Chandon Sullivan [who signed last week] can take the next step and be two of the three corners needed to start. However, that other outside position is still empty. Does that make cornerback a round 1 target in the NFL Draft? Could be. To round things up, the guys will take a look at the 2021 draft picks and discuss who will contribute. The team got production from first-rounder, OT Christian Darrisaw, and some from two of the three fifth-rounders, RB Kene Nwangwu and FS Camryn Bynum. However, there were 4 players selected in the third round that were virtually invisible and barely played, if at all. Will that change this season? How will the newly hired staff use them? Agenda: — New signings — The offensive line — The plan at cornerback — Offseason strategy heading into the draft — The state of the 2021 draft picks Fan with us!!! It's Monday and your Minnesota Vikings are coming off their bye. In the Sunday night game, they will host the Dallas Cowboys coming off theirs. Will Dak Prescott play? That could be the linchpin as to answering the question of which team will US Bank Stadium be a house of horrors for. From the Cowboys' O-line and their weapons, with a healthy Prescott, they can be deadly. Will they? Will the Mike Zimmer defense scheme a way to shut them down, especially without Patrick Peterson? Can the Vikes' offense stay aggressive throughout the entire game? Will Kirk Cousins come out hot? Can they outscore good teams like Dallas? All these and more will be some of the topics covered. There is a little echo in the beginning, but that does get cleared up, so plow right through like Dalvin Cook slicing through the Cowboys' D-Line. Other talking points for tonight's show:  - Which O-line will dominate? - Which running back combo will be more effective? - Can Mike Zimmer have Bashaud Breeland and Cameron Dantzler shut down Cedrick Wilson and CeeDee Lamb? - How will Christian Darrisaw in his second start look against Randy Gregory?  - Will Michael Pierce be healthy for the game? - Impressions around the league both teams watched yesterday. If you win on a lot more plays, these two aren't necessary. It is however for health of the Vikings' season that they grab victory against the Seattle Seahawks. This has been a team that has beaten Mike Zimmer's Vikings every time they have played. Will this game be any different? This will be the first time the Seahawks have taken on the Vikings at US Bank Stadium. The stadium, packed full of fans chanting Odin, and SKOL, will make a difference. They should have the Seahawks offensive linemen false starting. The Vikings defense which has yet to jell in two games, can now feed off the fans making noise, cheering, and down right amped up energy that flows within that glorious bowl and ETFE roof. Russell Wilson is getting older, but may be wiser and can still hurt you. He has two wide receivers in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett that the purple secondary will have to shut down. A hard task when Bashaud Breeland hasn't lived up to expectations. Will we see Cameron Dantzler eventually take over? The “Meaty Boys” on the defensive line should have a better day, but Wilson can still run. Can they contain him? Then can the Vikes' offense continue to cook? Kirk Cousins has been playing well and a legitimate WR3 has been found in KJ Osborn. Can the running game get going, and set up more play-action? Dalvin Cook is recovering from an ankle injury and hasn't practiced all week. We might see more of Alexander Mattison as a result. The big question though is can the Vikings get the win and beat the Seahawks? On list topics: 1) Chris Carson - who has averaged 4.6 yards per carry against us.  2) Russell Wilson and his career stats against the Vikings. 3) Conerbacks D.J. Reed and Tre Flowers. 4) What kind of performance will Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen and KJ ‘Ozzy' Osborn need to have a day against those guys?  5) Vikings corners Bashaud Breeland, Patrick Peterson, and Mackensie Alexander expectations. If they don't play better Sunday it's going to be another frustrating day for us Viking fans because someone needs to cover DJ Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 corner back prospects for the draft and the likelihood that the Vikings would take one is high at #14 could be possible. After the legal issues of Jeff Gladney surfaced, suddenly the signing Patrick Peterson and Mackensie Alexander for a one year rental, Mike Hughes’ injury history and the fact that the only CB on the roster for 2022 may only be Cameron Dantzler, throw in Mike Zimmer’s affinity for corners and this selection may indeed happen. Cornerbacks This cornerback class was a lot of fun. From top to bottom, this class is loaded in the top 100 with a lot of varying play styles. I believe there are upwards of 7 guys who could go in the first round with a lot of talent available into day 3. Corners are at a premium in the league now more than ever and I wouldn’t be shocked to see a massive run go early day 3. Corners are a fun position to break down. Some are excellent in press coverage and others only playing off coverage or zone. The biggest thing I look for when watching them is football IQ. How are their read and reaction skills? Do they have the athleticism to match their instincts and keep up with the receiver? How are their ball skills? When they get beat, how do they recover? A lot of nuances that get differentiate the different types of corners but they all still need to cover the receivers just the same.
