Matteo Messina Denaro era uno dei fedelissimi di Salvatore Riina, assieme a Giuseppe Graviano componente della “Super cosa” costituita dal capo dei capi di Cosa nostra per portare avanti la stagione delle stragi. Dunque aveva avuto un ruolo decisionale di primo piano nell'attacco al cuore dello Stato da parte della mafia. Poiché la sua latitanza è durata trent'anni ci si chiede chi ha potuto coprirlo sul piano logistico, al di là della rete di amicizie e parentele che lo avevano protetto per lungo tempo. A Campobello di Mazara, doveva fissato il suo covo, era visibile a molti: andava anche al ristorante e di tanto in tanto pure a giocare ai videopoker. La svolta nell'indagine è avvenuta il 6 dicembre, quando i carabinieri del Ros sono entrati nell'abitazione di Rosalia Messina Denaro, a Castelvetrano, e nel piede cavo di una sedia, dove volevano installare una microspia, hanno trovato un biglietto con il diario clinico di un malato di tumore. Le ricerche nella banca dati del ministero della Salute hanno portato a una persona in particolare, Andrea Bonafede, geometra di Campobello, nipote dello storico boss del paese, fedelissimo dei Messina Denaro. Il 16 gennaio, il geometra Bonafede aveva una seduta di chemioterapia alla clinica La Maddalena di Palermo. Ma non si presentò lui, piuttosto il padrino latitante, che venne arrestato. If you remember the Waltons TV show, I'm sure you remember John Boy Walton, played by Richard Thomas. Richard won an Emmy and received two Golden Globe awards for his performance on the show. He appeared in the FX spy thriller “The Americans” and on Netflix in “Ozark.” Thomas had a great background, with his parents being dancers with the New York City ballet and they owned the New York School of Ballet. At the age of seven, he made his Broadway debut in “Sunrise at Campobello.” He has since appeared in many Broadway shows.  His film roles included “Winning” with Paul Newman. Da allora abbiamo scoperto moltissime cose: dal suo (precario) stato di salute ai covi in cui si era ultimamente nascosto nella cittadina in provincia di Trapani. Apodado "Diabolik" por su ferocidad, Matteo Messina Denaro era considerado el capo mafioso más peligroso de Italia desde las muertes de Toto Riina y Bernardo Provenzano, y era el mafioso fugitivo desde hacía más tiempo: 30 años. Las investigaciones siguen en Sicilia, donde se están identificando sus escondites y sus colaboradores. Se le buscó por el mundo entero, pero al parecer, vivía a apenas nueve kilómetros de donde nació. El lunes 16 de enero, a las 8 de la mañana, un hombre de 61 años entró en una prestigiosa clínica de la ciudad de Palermo. Llevaba un reloj de lujo, documentos falsos, un gorro de lana y gafas de sol, pese a que llovía en la capital de Sicilia. Él no lo sabía, pero decenas de policías le vigilaban. Minutos después, pasaron a la acción. También el hombre de los mil secretos, sobre todo respecto a los negocios actuales de la mafia. Enfermo de cáncer La noticia tardó poco en correr como la pólvora. A las puertas de la clínica, donde el sangriento mafioso se trataba un cáncer desde 2020, aplausos espontáneos vinieron de transeúntes dedicados a los policías que lo detuvieron. La primera ministra Giorgia Meloni viajó inmediatamente a Sicilia y habló de un día histórico para la lucha contra la mafia. Italia llevaba 30 años detrás de Messina Denaro, de quien había pocas fotografías. De hecho, como admitió el fiscal de Palermo, Maurizio de Luca, hasta el último minuto no se supo a ciencia cierta que aquel enfermo era él. Una de las claves de la investigación fue precisamente saber que Messina Denaro tenía cáncer y, por lo tanto, tenía que recibir tratamiento en alguna clínica de Sicilia. “Hace algunos días identificamos la posibilidad de que un sospechoso hubiera reservado una cita con un doctor especialista. Había posibilidades de que fuera él. Pero la certeza la hemos tenido solo hoy”, dijo De Luca. Tres escondites Tras su arresto fueron sido descubiertos tres escondites. Todos están en la localidad de Campobello de Mazzara, a tan solo nueve kilómetros de donde nació, el pueblo de Castelvetrano. No son búnkeres, sino meros apartamentos. De hecho, el jefe mafioso vivía como un ciudadano común: iba al supermercado, al bar y a pasear. La pregunta que muchos se hacen es si es posible que el hombre más buscado del país llegara a pasar totalmente desapercibido en una ciudad de apenas 12.000 personas. Algunos de los médicos que le trataron se hicieron incluso selfies con él. El alcalde de Campobello, Giuseppe Castiglione, reconoció que es difícil aceptar que el capo se sintiera allí protegido: “Espero que sus colaboradores sean pocos, porque si no fuera así, habremos perdido todos. Todo el Estado italiano. Porque sería una realidad horrible. Pero lo excluyo. La mayor parte de la gente aquí es honesta. Y luego como en todas las sociedades hay criminales”, subrayó. Ya han sido arrestados dos colaboradores y la policía investiga a muchos más. Mientras tanto, el mafioso está recluido en una prisión de máxima seguridad en el centro de Italia. Por el momento se niega a colaborar. Quizá cuando sea juzgado decidirá revelar cómo logró mantener su imperio criminal en pie por tanto tiempo.

Ha detto il procuratore Nino Di Matteo: "L'arresto di Matteo Messina Denaro è una tappa importante nella lotta alla mafia ma è oggettivamente scandaloso che oggi, in un'epoca di tecnologie avanzate e con la preparazione delle nostre forze di polizia, un soggetto resti latitante per 30 anni” ha sottolineato ancora Di Matteo, concludendo: In questi anni sulla latitanza di Messina Denaro si è detto di tutto ma le cronache di questi giorni ci dicono invece che è stato rintracciato a casa sua, il suo volto è uguale a quello delle foto della polizia. Ha abitato a Campobello di Mazara, ha girato con il documento di un'altra persona che abitava nello stesso posto, è stato arrestato in una clinica frequentata da centinaia di persone, aveva un cellulare con cui scambiava messaggi con altri pazienti e si scattata selfie. Lo Stato deve mostrare di non avere paura di fare certe domande e di indagare su cose molto scomode”. E dunque chi ha protetto Matteo Messina Denaro, l'ultimo dei Corleonesi? Nel 2011 l'allora sindaco Ciro Caravà aveva sanato 800 case costruite lungo gli otto chilometri dello splendido litorale a sud di Trapani. Caravà, ormai defunto, è stato poi condannato per aver avuto rapporti con Leonardo Bonafede, esponente della cosca locale e parente di Andrea Bonafede che si è intestato l'appartamento acquistato da Messina Denaro per la latitanza. Il primo covo di Denaro è in via Cb 31, più conosciuto come vicolo San Vito. La sigla (Cb) riguarda buona parte di Campobello di Mazara. Nelle periferie, ci sono strade che si chiamano semplicemente Via I, Via H, Via Y e altre che invece vanno da Cb 7 a salire. L'abusivismo da queste parti è una scienza esatta. Non stupiscono dunque alcune testimonianze di molti abitanti che affermano di non aver mai visto e conosciuto Denaro, di non sapere nulla di lui. Quell'omertà che appariva chiara fin dal 1962 nel "Rapporto da Corleone" di Gianni Bisiach e nelle inchieste dell'indimenticabile Joe Marrazzo. Ma accanto al silenzio in cui si nascondono alcuni cittadini siciliani c'è la rabbia di una maggioranza di siciliani che non intendono fare i patti con le cosche. Quei volti, spesso di giovani, apparsi in queste ore nelle piazze di Castelvetrano, di Palermo, gli stessi che trent'anni fa avevano invaso la Sicilia dopo le stragi di Capaci e via D'Amelio. A cura di Daniele Biacchessi Mi è capitato più volte di raccontare la storia di Matteo Messina Denaro, della sua figura di primo piano come capo del mandamento di Castelvetrano in provincia di Trapani, degli affari sporchi che ha garantito per conto di Cosa Nostra, prima e dopo le stragi del '92 e '93. A molti, ma non a tutti, era chiaro che il boss era certamente vivo e attivo sul territorio siciliano, solo lì bisognava cercarlo, come accaduto nel passato per gran parte dei capi di Cosa Nostra come Totò Riina, Bernardo Provenzano, Giovanni Brusca, Nitto Santapaola, i fratelli Graviano. Seguendo la lunga catena dei cosiddetti "pizzini" si sarebbe potuti giungere al suo covo ben prima di averlo poi scoperto ieri in località Campobello di Mazara. Gli investigatori ci erano arrivati già il 10 dicembre 2018 con l'operazione Tramonto, quando avevano setacciato l'area di protezione del boss, quella che si delinea tra Mazara del Vallo, Campobello di Mazara, Salemi, Santa Ninfa e Marsala. Un'altra traccia è del 22 febbraio 2019 quando vengono arrestati gli imprenditori Calogero Luppino, Salvatore Giorgi e Francesco Catalanotto, tutti di Castelvetrano, tutti finanziatori delle attività di Denaro. Gente come Francesco Domingo alla guida del mandamento di Castellamare del Golfo, arrestato insieme ad altri 12 nel giugno 2020. Era chiaro che Matteo Messina Denaro, da almeno quattro anni, viveva in una solitudine marcata, anche se dorata, protetta da una fitta rete di protezioni che ha favorito la sua lunga latitanza, e che alla fine se lo è "venduto".

A molti, ma non a tutti, era chiaro che il boss era certamente vivo e attivo sul territorio siciliano, solo lì bisognava cercarlo, come accaduto nel passato per gran parte dei capi di Cosa Nostra come Totò Riina, Bernardo Provenzano, Giovanni Brusca, Nitto Santapaola, i fratelli Graviano. Seguendo la lunga catena dei cosiddetti "pizzini" si sarebbe potuti giungere al suo covo ben prima di averlo poi scoperto ieri in località Campobello di Mazara. Gli investigatori ci erano arrivati già il 10 dicembre 2018 con l'operazione Tramonto, quando avevano setacciato l'area di protezione del boss, quella che si delinea tra Mazara del Vallo, Campobello di Mazara, Salemi, Santa Ninfa e Marsala. Un'altra traccia è del 22 febbraio 2019 quando vengono arrestati gli imprenditori Calogero Luppino, Salvatore Giorgi e Francesco Catalanotto, tutti di Castelvetrano, tutti finanziatori delle attività di Denaro.
