Send us a textTrauma lies at the heart of most psychological suffering, yet our understanding of it continues to evolve. In this profound conversation with the returning "Mental Men" panel of experienced therapists, we explore how mental health treatment has transformed from psychoanalysis that sometimes minimized real trauma to approaches that honor lived experiences and their lasting impacts. When Dr. Christopher Gordon underwent psychoanalysis in the 1970s, the prevailing theory suggested psychological problems stemmed from internal conflicts rather than actual traumatic events. "We paid really little attention to actual trauma," he reflects, noting how profoundly this limited understanding affected treatment. Bob Cherney captures the persistent nature of unaddressed trauma with the striking metaphor of "an infection in the soul that festers" when not properly addressed. The conversation explores grief as a universal human experience that our culture frequently mishandles. We expect people to "move on" within weeks of significant losses, when truly processing grief requires much longer. As Pat Rice eloquently states, "If you live long, you'll have to say goodbye a lot"—pointing to how aging inevitably brings accumulated losses that need ongoing attention rather than quick resolution.Perhaps most compelling is the discussion around strength versus vulnerability. "Strength is asking for help," challenges traditional masculine norms of stoicism. The therapists explore how protective parts develop to shield individuals from vulnerability but often prevent necessary healing. For first responders who witness what "95% of people never see," this conflict becomes particularly acute as they struggle to maintain professional composure while carrying enormous emotional burdens. The Mental Men celebrate those breakthrough therapeutic moments when clients suddenly recognize patterns that have eluded them—what Andy Kang describes as seeing "the pilot light of hope come on again." These moments, as Dennis Sweeney remind us, is why addressing trauma matters so deeply: healing becomes possible when we honor both wounds and resilience.Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.
This is 2023 and I'm having some time on my hands so I'm remastering the old episodes. This means re-inserting all the music taken from proper sources and other minor tweaks to make it better. The original music was just recorded as played in the room from some shitty PC speakers. I went into the master and put the tracks in properly. I also tweaked some other parameters of the audio and converted it to mono as should always be the case for podcasts. The original ep was uploaded in 2015. Here is the original description: Broken Chair Scores Episode 6 is the best episode so far. Believe me. We deliver a concise and kind of bizarre one hour and thirty minutes of soundtrack goodness. [Update from 2023: It's 2 hours now due to including the tracks in proper quality as well as the voice-over ones.] As always we review our favorite tracks from one film and one game soundtrack. In this episode we talk about the soundtrack to the 1995 Sega game "Alien Soldier" written by Kazuo Hanzawa as well as the soundtrack to the 2003 Peter Weir Film "Master and Commander" written by Richard Tognetti, Iva Davies and Christopher Gordon. If you want to support us you can always write a comment here. This would be highly appreciated. If you're interested in a more relaxed podcast about mostly (city-) building game soundtracks for the PC (think Anno, Settlers, Tycoons from the 90's and onwards) then check out Aufbaumusik. Enjoy!
I recently ran across a brand new tool that is especially helpful for teaching your children and teens about God's good and glorious design for sexuality and gender. Written by Christopher Gordon, it's the New Reformation Catechism on Human Sexuality. If you are unfamiliar with catechisms, a catechism is a summary of the principle of Christian religion in the form of questions and answers that's used for instruction. And, in a world where our kids are being misled twenty-four seven, this new catechism serves to communicate the truths they need to hear in order to live into God's good and glorious design. Consider this question and answer regarding the gender binary: How many sexes did God make at Creation? God made two sexes at creation; in the image of God he created them, make and female he created them. Parents, we must educate our kids properly, pointing them to God's creational order and intent. And the place where we find this truth, is in the Bible!
About The Guest(s): Christopher Gordon is a pastor at the Escondido United Reform Church and has been in pastoral ministry for 20 years. He is the author of the New Reformation catechism on human sexuality and has a passion for teaching and preaching on biblical and theological subjects. Summary: In this episode of Renewal Cast, Colt Robinson and Jay Whip interview Christopher Gordon on the topic of Christ-centered preaching. They discuss the importance of preaching that focuses on the person and work of Jesus Christ and how it differs from moralistic preaching. They also explore the hermeneutical principles and theological categories that can help pastors preach Christ more effectively. The conversation emphasizes the need for pastors to understand the law-gospel distinction and to approach the text with a clear understanding of the author's intention. The tone and manner of preaching are also discussed, highlighting the importance of conveying the grace and compassion of Christ to the congregation. Key Takeaways:Christ-centered preaching aims to exposit the text and show the excellencies and beauties of Jesus Christ.Preaching should address the most pressing need of the congregation, which is the forgiveness of sins and the provision of a Savior. The law-gospel distinction is essential for understanding and preaching the Scriptures.Good expository preaching involves understanding the overarching point of the text and developing a sermon that supports and develops that point. The tone and manner of preaching should reflect the grace and compassion of Christ.Quotes:"The aim of preaching is to refresh people in the wonderful Gospel.""Christ-centered preaching can be properly done by dealing with the text on its own terms.""The ministry of the Spirit is a ministry of righteousness, rooted in the love and sacrifice of Christ.""In the Gospel, God is for us, not angrily yelling at us.""The tone and expression of preaching should reflect the gracious words of Jesus."Note: The quotes provided are direct quotes from the transcript.
One of our guests encourages parents listening in to enforce a “PG-13” content label on today's show, but—remembering some disturbing stories Todd has shared on the podcast—we confidently move forward with today's topic. On the table: a frank discussion of the ongoing fallout from the Revoice conference and other sexually-charged issues challenging the Church. Joining Carl and Todd are author, speaker, former professor, and current sock maker Rosaria Butterfield, along with Joshua Gielow. Joshua is from truthXchange, an organization that helps the next Christian generation think clearly and live virtuously in a culture antagonistic to their faith. You'll learn to discern the subtle shifts in language used to normalize certain behaviors making their way into the Church and the attitude of victimhood used to silence any criticism. We have a limited number of copies of The New Reformation Catechism on Human Sexuality by Christopher Gordon to give away; it's published by the Gospel Reformation Network. Enter here because—who knows?—you might win a pair of Rosaria's signature socks!

A composer across a full spectrum of genres, Christopher Gordon has written for Australia's leading orchestras, for major events such as the 2006 Commonwealth Games, has penned ballets, and scores for films such as Master and Commander, Mao's Last Dancer and Ladies in Black. In this program, Christopher talks candidly with Simon Moore about his unorthodox entry into composing after recovering from alcoholism in his early adulthood, the ins and outs of writing music for the screen, as well as his new album with the simple and elegant title “Chamber Music”.

Christopher Gordon's longevity at the top of US men's professional squash has been nothing less than impressive, and he has his sites set on more wins and more titles going forward. Chris and I talk about his backstory in US squash, a big win over Simon Rosner in the German Jr. Open, the renaissance in US squash which ultimately led to the huge developments we see there today, his love of hockey, and how pumped he is for this next stage of his pro career. Great chat with Chris.

Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, I thought I’d produce an old-school film music mix program. I’ve been producing film music mix programs since my days on Mohawk College Radio. I also have a collection of these mixed bag programs here on the site which you can listen to by going to http://www.cinematicsound.net/category/film-music-mix/ Usually, these film music mix programs don’t have a theme… I just pick random tracks or random albums and play them for a few hours. However, today’s program has a theme! I thought I would present a program that promoted nothing but positivity. A show that makes you feel good. A show that’ll put a smile on your face. So, today program focuses solely on JOYOUS music. Anything goes. Film or concert music. Fanfares and celebrations. Music for fireworks. Music for sports. Triumphant, strong, bold music. Music that will lift your spirit high in the sky and make you forgot for a fleeting moment about anything negative in your life. On the program today you will hear selections from composers John Williams (Liberty Fanfare), Peter Boyer (Silver Fanfare), John Addison (Reach For The Sky), Lee Holdridge (The Tuskegee Airman), Clint Mansell (Sahara), Alfons Conde (Fireworks Overture), Jerry Goldsmith (Fireworks), Alan Menken (Tangled), Patrick Doyle (Eragon), Panu Aaltio (Dawn of the Dragonslayer), Joel McNeely (Iron Will), John Debney (Little Giants), Brian Tyler (US Open), Christopher Gordon (2006 Commonwealth Games), David Arnold (2012 Summer Olympic Games), Michael Kamen (2002 Winter Olympic Games), and Gavin Greenaway (Epcot: IllumiNations – Reflections of Earth) Enjoy! Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
On the program today you are going to hear a three hour plus program dedicated to music written for anything but film, TV and video games by film, TV and video game composers. It is not uncommon place for film composers to cross over and dabble in the concert hall. Many of the greatest Golden Age film composers actually got their start in the concert world – Erich Wolfgang Korngold, for instance, wrote many operas and symphonies years before scoring such films as THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and THE SEA HAWK. Others like John Williams, James Horner, Miklos Rozsa, Danny Elfman, Cliff Eidelman, Bernard Herrmann – just to name a few – have also written spectacular and challenging music to be enjoyed away from the silver screen. This is actually CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’s third CONCERT MUSIC BY FILM COMPOSERS program. This is our first since 2006. On the show today you will be hearing classical works by such composers as Andrew Pearce, Christopher Gordon, Lee Hodridge, Robert Folk, Elliot Goldenthal, Jerry Goldsmith, James Seymour Brett and more.
