Ron Simmons is a retired American professional wrestler and former football player, best known for making history as the first African American world champion in professional wrestling. Born on May 15, 1958, in Perry, Georgia, Simmons first gained recognition as a standout college football player before transitioning to a legendary wrestling career. Simmons was a dominant force at Florida State University (FSU), where he played as a defensive lineman under coach Bobby Bowden. He was a two-time All-American and later had brief stints in the NFL (Cleveland Browns), USFL, and CFL before moving into professional wrestling. Simmons made his wrestling debut in the mid-1980s but rose to fame in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where he achieved his greatest milestone. On August 2, 1992, he defeated Big Van Vader to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, making history as the first recognized Black world champion in a major wrestling promotion. After WCW, Simmons joined the WWE (then WWF) in the mid-90s, where he became famous as Faarooq, the leader of the influential faction The Nation of Domination, which played a key role in shaping the careers of stars like The Rock. Later, he teamed up with Bradshaw (JBL) to form The Acolytes Protection Agency (APA), a fan-favorite tag team known for their hard-hitting style and backstage poker segments. Simmons retired from in-ring competition in the mid-2000s but remained a beloved WWE personality, often making special appearances with his iconic catchphrase: "DAMN!" He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012, cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in the industry. While FSU-UF had its heyday during its fierce battles between Bobby Bowden and Steve Spurrier, the series between Florida State and the Miami Hurricanes has maintained its edge and prestige even when one team falters and the national stakes of the matchup fall to the wayside. Seven of the last ten matchups (18 of the last 25!) have been decided by one score, with the series sitting at 35-33 in Miami's favor. The history and importance of this game isn't lost on either side, especially as the memory of Florida State's 2022 win in Hard Rock Stadium is still fresh in Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal's mind. In his first year leading the program, he saw FSU put together a 45-3 win, the largest road victory in the history of the two schools. After pushing the Seminoles to the edge last year in an upset bid, making a statement is going to be on the forefront of his and Miami's mind. With No. 6 Miami boasting a 7-0 (3-0 ACC) record and a Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Cam Ward, it would be a tall task for Florida State in a normal year — in 2024, with FSU fielding one of the country's worst offenses as the defense still tries to acclimate, it'll be a major challenge avoiding a repeat of 2020's matchup, when Miami scored the most points in series history en route to a 42-point win of its own (52-10). EJ Manuel, a former first-round NFL Draft pick, joined ACC Network in 2019 and is a studio analyst on The Huddle, ACCN's signature football show that airs Saturday mornings throughout the fall. He also co-hosts ACCN's In Play with Kelsey Riggs and is a regular each week on ESPN's College Football Live. Along with is his ESPN duties, Manuel co-hosts College Sports Today on SiriusXM with Brock Huard.One of the most productive quarterbacks in Florida State history, Manuel led the Seminoles to a 25-6 record as a starter during the 2009-12 seasons, and the fourth-most wins in program history. The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native also helped Florida State to notable victories including the 2013 Discover Orange Bowl, 2012 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game and 2009 Gator Bowl – the final game of legendary coach Bobby Bowden's career. He is the second quarterback in FBS history to win four straight bowl games, and also went 15-3 in his career against ACC opponents. Manuel is FSU's all-time leader in completion percentage (66.9), which is tied for third in ACC history, and ranks among the top five Seminole quarterbacks all-time for passing yards (7,736, 4th), total offense (8,563, 3rd), completions (600, 3rd) and attempts (897, 5th), despite only two seasons as the full-time starter. He earned second team All-ACC honors for the 2012 season and was named the 2013 Senior Bowl MVP.Following his career at FSU, Manuel was a first-round draft pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2013.

Brad Scott has retired from football and is now back in Clemson enjoying the grandad and golf life. Jeff Scott is fully immersed in his custom homebuilding business and out of football for a second consecutive season. In other words, father and son have time to sit back and tell stories from their decades in college football that included epic runs at Clemson and Florida State. Brad remembers going out to dinner with Dabo Swinney in Clemson when Swinney was interviewing with Tommy Bowden for a job coaching receivers in the spring of 2003. When Swinney landed a blockbuster recruiting class in 2011 after a 6-7 season, Brad was the major figure in the signings of Sammy Watkins, Martavis Bryant and Mike Bellamy. He remembers the NCAA coming to campus to ask him questions after people wondered how Clemson could sign so many high-profile players after a disappointing season. Brad also shares a story from 1986 when he was on Bobby Bowden's staff at FSU and Bowden called. "Brad, I'm going to Alabama and taking you with me," Bobby told him over the phone. Bowden ended up backing out of the job after accepting it. Jeff shares a recollection from 1998, three days after South Carolina fired his father as head coach. Tommy Bowden had taken over at Clemson and offered Brad a spot as tight ends coach. Brad took the job, and soon thereafter Jeff was wearing a Clemson cap when he ran into former Gamecock quarterback Steve Taneyhill. Taneyhill thought Jeff was just bitter and wearing the hat out of spite. "Steve," Jeff told him. "We're really going to Clemson. My dad just got a job coaching tight ends."

No one in West Virginia University football history has had a longer association with the program than John Spiker. The man who created WVU's athletic training curriculum served as the head athletic trainer from coaches Bobby Bowden to Dana Holgorsen. Just for good measure, throw in the fact that the Preston County native began his career as an athletic trainer at the University of North Carolina for Dean Smith.
