Season 2- Episode 55 On this episode, homeschool mom, Donna, shares her experience with raising her gifted daughter, how important it is to grow your child's emotional intelligence, the benefits of homeschooling gifted kids, the early signs she recognized in her child, how vital community is, and the advocacy she does for parents of gifted children. https://athenasacademy.com/ Donna Metler is a long time educator, at every level from infants to adults, whose greatest teaching challenge came when, to her horror, her baby hadn't read the “normal child development milestones” and instead, chose to progress in their own, asynchronous, manner. This led to a journey of gifted/2e homeschooling which included starting interest based clubs and organizations, taking and teaching online classes, facilitating independent projects, attending international conferences with a teen presenter, locating outside mentors, and supporting a child attending early college. Donna currently teaches music at Singleton Community Center in Bartlett, TN, mentors and supports homeschoolers in the local community, and moderates and mentors junior instructors at Athena's Advanced Academy, an Cognia accredited online program offering a la carte classes to meet the needs of gifted and 2e students. Donna's workshops and 1-1 mentoring involve looking at a child where they are and figuring out a roadmap…while being ready for your child to light the roadmap on fire and throw it out the window at any moment, and enjoying the trip wherever it leads. Donna's in person classes offer opportunities for children to engage joyously in music, regardless of neurotype. Howard previously served one term on the Cobb school board, clashing with the Republican majority and Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. While on the board, he sought an investigation by Cognia, the accrediting agency, but it faced controversy and was eventually voided. Howard also made an unsuccessful bid for state school superintendent. Richardson has not endorsed any candidate for her seat. The qualifying period for the May primaries runs from March 4 to March 8. In this episode, I discuss the benefits of bilingual immersion programs. How can a dual language education impact student achievement? Joining me today to discuss bilingual education, is educator and administrator Eric Franzen (www.idealschool.education). He is the founder of Ideal School, a Cognia-accredited dual language international online school serving K-9 students from over 20 countries in real-time.Studies funded by the Department of Education, have delved into the effects of bilingual education on student achievement, stating the benefits that extend far beyond language acquisition. Researchers indicate that students immersed in a bilingual environment demonstrate enhanced cognitive skills, including improved problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and creativity. These students exhibit greater flexibility in adapting to new situations and a heightened awareness of cultural diversity, leading to increased empathy and tolerance. Moreover, bilingualism has been shown to positively impact academic performance across various subjects. Students proficient in multiple languages often outperform their monolingual counterparts in areas such as mathematics, reading comprehension, and even standardized tests. The cognitive flexibility developed through bilingual immersion programs equips students with invaluable skills that transfer beyond language skills alone.Join us on this enlightening journey as we discuss the power of bilingual immersion programs and their positive impact on student achievement. Whether you're a parent seeking the best education for your child, an educator exploring innovative approaches, or simply fascinated by the wonders of language, this episode is sure to inspire and inform.Ideal School is giving a discount for any family that heard this podcast. One possibility is seeking accreditation through the Georgia Accrediting Commission, although it accredits individual schools rather than entire districts. The board is also exploring whether Cognia would accredit the district without an annual payment. Cognia faced controversy in 2021 for a review of Cobb County School District, which was eventually voided due to evidence ignored during the process. The board voted 6-1 to table the payment, with concerns about potential risks for students and the monopolistic position of Cognia in Georgia's accreditation landscape. Research and discussions are ongoing to find the best solution for maintaining accreditation. STORY 5: hall The Georgia Law Enforcement Organization is raising funds to support Hall County Sheriff's Deputy Patrick Neil Holtzclaw, whose wife and young children tragically died in a fiery crash in Habersham County. The fundraising efforts will help Deputy Holtzclaw with funeral expenses. The community has been urged to offer support and prayers during this difficult time. Story 6: park A new skate park at the Silver Comet Linear Park in Powder Springs, Cobb County, has officially opened. Designed by California Skateparks, the 20,000-square-foot park cost $1.8 million and can host Olympic qualifying competitions. Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman expressed his excitement, calling it a "dream come true." Skaters and bikers were thrilled with the park's features, and it's expected to be a safe and popular gathering spot for skateboarders in the community. The skatepark is seen as a valuable asset to the city of Powder Springs and is expected to inspire future generations of skateboarders to enjoy the sport in a secure environment. We'll be back in a moment Break: Drake- Elon- UMC 30 Story 7: transit Cobb County is planning to build a new transit center in south Cobb to improve access to different bus routes of the CobbLinc transit system. The project aims to enhance transportation options for residents and ease traffic congestion. Two existing transit centers in Marietta and Cumberland are also being considered for renovation and relocation. The studies will help the county access federal funding for the project. The completion of the centers is expected to take five to seven years. The proposed transit center in south Cobb is likely to be located near Wellstar Cobb Hospital, with the exact site to be determined. Story 8: team usa Three Cobb County baseball players, Levi Clark, Bryce Clavon, and Michael Mullinax, have been selected for Team USA's 18U national team training camp roster. They earned their spots after competing in the Prospect Development Pipeline League. The training camp will take place in California, and the final 20-man roster will be announced on August 25. The team aims to defend its world title in September. The training camp roster features players from 19 states, with California having the most representatives. The 18U national team will be managed by Michael Cuddyer, a two-time All-Star. Story 9: smart At SEC Media Days, Georgia coach Kirby Smart said he is focused on the present and not getting caught up in making history by potentially winning three straight national titles. The Bulldogs have a shot at achieving a rare three-peat, with Minnesota being the only team to have done it before in 1934-1936. However, Smart believes in taking it one day at a time and not relying on historical feats for motivation. Georgia is coming off two impressive seasons and is considered the favorite to win it all again this year, but they remain focused on the new challenges ahead. A Cobb County Police Department officer shot a motorist during a traffic stop Wednesday night after the driver reached for a gun, the department said. According to a news release, at around 10:22 p.m. police pulled the driver over on Interstate 75 near Delk Road. While approaching the vehicle, the officer observed that the driver had a gun. The department said that the driver made a movement toward a firearm and ignored verbal commands. The officer then shot the driver, police said. Arriving officers rendered first aid until the driver could be transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital via ambulance. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. An inmate of the Cobb County jail died in custody Wednesday morning, the Cobb County Sheriff's Office said. James Martin of Mableton, was booked last Friday on methamphetamine possession and failure to maintain lane. Martin told deputies he was a heroin addict, “and had just binged the substance,” according to a news release. Wednesday morning, Martin told the jail's medical staff he was feeling unwell before having a seizure. Martin was given Narcan, a drug used to counteract an opioid overdose, but he died while en route to the hospital in an ambulance, the sheriff's office said. His time of death was reported as 9:21 a.m. The sheriff's office said later Wednesday they had since learned Martin suffered from stage IV hepatitis C. The office has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death. Martin is the seventh inmate to die in custody since Sheriff Craig Owens took office in 2021, and the first this year. Sheriff Owens has implemented new technologies such as medical monitoring wristbands to try and curb jail deaths after a string of inmate deaths under the previous administration. Though her own bill to rein in the powers of Georgia's accreditation agencies fell short this week, state Representative Ginny Ehrhart, the Republican representative from west Cobb, says the push isn't dead yet, with a similar measure having been passed by the Georgia Senate earlier this week. Ehrhart's bill — House Bill 506 — came out of the firestorm of controversy sparked during the Cobb County School District's “special review” by its accrediting company, Cognia, in 2021. Initiated after complaints by the school board's three Democrats over the partisan bickering on the board, the review dinged the district over shortcomings in “board governance.” Cognia's report would later be voided and replaced with a new one, as the firm's CEO Mark Elgart walked back other recommendations on improving the student achievement gap and fiscal responsibility. Ehrhart's bill would have barred Cognia and other firms from evaluating Georgia public school districts on political concerns like board governance, and set up an appeals process for negative reviews. Her legislation, however, never received a vote before the full House of Representatives before Crossover Day Monday. The west Cobb Republican told the MDJ a similar proposal from state Senator Greg Dolezal, a Republican from Alpharetta, is headed to the House after passing out of the Senate 52-0. Dolezal's bill, Senate Bill 204, is broadly similar to Ehrhart's in that it limits the standards by which accrediting firms can evaluate districts and schools. Pollen, already blanketing cars, causing sniffles and irritating eyes across Cobb and the rest of metro Atlanta, couldn't wait for spring to start breaking records. Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, an allergy practice with offices throughout the metro area, reported 14 days of pollen counts in the high range for February, a record for the month that beat the previous one of 10 days in February 2017. While Atlanta Allergy did not report any days of “extremely high” tree pollen counts — 1,600 or more — for February, the allergy group has already recorded “extremely high” counts three straight days this week, Monday through Wednesday. The 3,937 count on Tuesday was the ninth-highest in March during the past decade. Pollen counts, measured in grains per cubic meter of air over 24 hours, have been consistently high in the metro area before spring has officially started. Dr. Stanley Fineman, who sees patients at two Atlanta Allergy and Asthma locations in Marietta, said earlier pollen seasons have become the norm in the last three decades. Per Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, recent studies show the trend tracks with climate warming trends and said Southern states will be more greatly impacted than other areas of the U.S. For people worried about how the pollen is affecting them, Fineman said the first step they should take is to get an allergy test that will pinpoint what exactly their allergy is and what's triggering their allergic reactions. From there, Fineman and his colleagues can give patients allergy treatment plans. For years, he advised patients to begin their plans, often starting with over-the-counter medications like nasal sprays, around St. Patrick's Day, so that the treatments would have time to work by high pollen count days in late March and early April. Did you know that on September 29th, 2022, new laws were set in place in the state of California that would allow non-citizens to become police officers? Yeah…I didn't either. In a new world where Defunding the Police has become commonplace, this new law also lessens the educational requirements needed to become a police officer. Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton breaks down some of the concerns and questions that we should all be asking ourselves. I've included the abstract below. You can read the full SB 960 here. SB 960: ABSTRACT Existing law establishes the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training within the Department of Justice to perform various functions involving the training of peace officers. Existing law requires peace officers in this state to meet specified minimum standards, including, among other requirements, being at least 18 years of age, being of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation, and being either a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship, except as prescribed. This bill would provide that those standards shall be interpreted and applied consistent with federal law and regulations, as specified. The bill would remove the provision that requires peace officers to either be a citizen of the United States or be a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship, and would instead require peace officers be legally authorized to work in the United States, and make conforming changes. Under existing law, the minimum education requirement for peace officers is high school graduation from a public school or other accredited high school, passing an equivalency test or high school proficiency examination, or attaining a 2-year, 4-year, or advanced degree from an accredited institution. Existing law requires accreditation to be from a state or local government educational agency, a regional accrediting association, an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education, or an organization holding full membership in specified organizations, including AdvancED. This bill would revise the accreditation standards to include an organization holding full membership in Cognia. (2) Existing law establishes, within the Transportation Agency, the Department of the California Highway Patrol, under the control of the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol. Existing law, with certain exceptions, prohibits a person who is not a citizen of the United States from being appointed as a member of the California Highway Patrol. This bill would remove that prohibition, and would make conforming changes. (3) This bill would incorporate additional changes to Section 1031 of the Government Code proposed by AB 2229 to be operative only if this bill and AB 2229 are enacted and this bill is enacted last. ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/ CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/ Like what you hear? www.GoodMorningGwinnett.com Gwinnett County Public Schools is facing a review from its accrediting agency a year earlier than scheduled because of complaints that have been filed against the district.Cognia spokeswoman Mariama Tyler confirmed the accrediting agency has received “several” complaints about the district, with at least one of them being about governance, which refers to the Board of Education. That has prompted a special review of the district which is expected to be conducted this month, where the district will have to answer questions from a team assembled by Cognia.“If a special review is warranted, that means there is something that came up outside of the regular five-year cycle of review, and it usually is initiated by a complaint,” Tyler said.SOURCE: www.GwinnettDailyPost.com
