The Real Time Crime Center acts as an information hub, utilizing technologies like drones, body-worn cameras, in-car cameras, and license plate readers to respond to calls for service. The center's integrated approach enhances situational awareness and response times, as demonstrated by comparing a 2005 incident to a recent one where technology played a crucial role in capturing the suspect. The Council unanimously approved the schedule, while also requesting an 8% hotel/motel tax from the Georgia General Assembly. The EpiCenter has offered free space for now, with potential costs in the future. STORY 5: What's Next for Jaha Howard? Former Cobb Board of Education member Jaha Howard has declared his intent to run for the Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 seat, becoming the second Democrat to file with the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. Howard previously served one term on the Cobb school board, clashing with the Republican majority and Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. While on the board, he sought an investigation by Cognia, the accrediting agency, but it faced controversy and was eventually voided. BREAK: ESOG STORY 1: A Dowell Elementary Student Brought a Knife to Campus. Parents Never Knew. A kindergarten student brought a knife to Dowell Elementary School, raising concerns about communication regarding student safety. The weapon was reported by another student, and the teacher confiscated it, following district and state protocols. However, only the parents of the student involved were informed. The Cobb County Association of Educators criticized the lack of communication, emphasizing the importance of transparency. The school administration and district defended their actions, stating that there was no threat to students and that disciplinary details cannot be made public. The incident has sparked discussions on balancing safety protocols with open communication in schools. STORY 2: Georgia Senate Passes Cobb School Board Map in Party-Line Vote The Georgia Senate passed the redrawn Cobb County Board of Education map proposed by state Sen. Ed Setzler in a party-line vote. The map is a response to a lawsuit claiming racial gerrymandering in the previous map. Setzler defended his map as the result of a thoughtful process, addressing the judge's order. Democrats, led by Sen. Jason Esteves, opposed Setzler's bill, stating it doesn't remedy the identified problems and violates the Voting Rights Act. Esteves criticized the process, suggesting local collaboration would have been better. The map will now head to the House of Representatives for consideration. STORY 3: Birrell Calls Out Current Commission as Unconstitutional Republican Commissioner JoAnn Birrell criticized the Cobb County Commission's attempt to create its own district boundaries, calling it unconstitutional. Earlier this month, Cobb Superior Court Judge Ann Harris ruled against the commission's move, stating it was unconstitutional. The Democratic majority used Georgia's constitutional home rule powers to substitute the state legislature-approved map to keep Democratic Commissioner Jerica Richardson in office. Commissioner Birrell, opposing the move, supported Judge Harris' ruling, stating that the commission's action is void. The county is appealing the decision to the Georgia Supreme Court. Commissioner Richardson will remain in office during the appeal. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Oct 21st Publish Date: Oct 20th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Saturday, October 21st and Happy 83rd Birthday to Musician Manfred Man ***MANFRED MAN*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Ragsdale Stands Firm as Cobb School Board Rejects Library Book Policy Changes Butterfly Garden Honors Victim of Recently Solved Marietta Cold Case Cobb Development Authority OKs $50k in Cash Grants to Startups All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA – ESOG – DRAKE STORY 1: Ragsdale Stands Firm as Cobb School Board Rejects Library Book Policy Changes The Cobb Board of Education voted 5-2 to reject proposed changes to the district's library book policy. The proposed changes, put forth by Democratic school board member Becky Sayler, would have specified which books could be permitted for use in school libraries based on criteria such as awards and relevance to major world religions. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale opposed the changes, stating that they would restrict his ability to remove inappropriate material from school libraries. Ragsdale had previously ordered the removal of certain books, deeming them sexually explicit. Critics argued that the proposed policy would enable a group of educators to make these decisions rather than the superintendent. STORY 2: Butterfly Garden Honors Victim of Recently Solved Marietta Cold Case The Marietta community dedicated a butterfly garden to the memory of Debbie Lynn Randall, a nine-year-old girl who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered in 1972. The case had gone unsolved for decades until recently, when the Cobb County District Attorney's Office identified the late William Rose as the perpetrator. The tragedy led to the creation of the Cobb-Marietta Girls Club, which has since grown into Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta, a program that provides support and resources for girls aged five to 18. The dedication ceremony brought together members of the community, including Randall's brother, Melvin Randall, and highlighted the positive change that stemmed from tragedy. STORY 3: Cobb Development Authority OKs $50k in Cash Grants to Startups The Development Authority of Cobb County has approved the allocation of $50,000 in cash grants to support small businesses in the county through the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Grant program. This program, which provides financial assistance to entrepreneurs starting businesses in Cobb County, was initially funded with $50,000 in 2019. The recent unanimous approval marks the fourth allocation, bringing the total funds to $200,000. The grant program aims to promote economic activity within the county by assisting small businesses and entrepreneurs. It is administered by Cobb County government's economic development staff, who review and vet applicants to ensure they meet the program's criteria. We'll be right back Break: ELON – JRM (CRAFTS & DRAFTS) – THE MARKET STORY 4: Muslim Parents Criticize Cobb Schools for Alert Referencing Hamas A group of Cobb Muslim residents, many with children in the Cobb County School District, have criticized the district for issuing an alert about "an international threat" from the Palestinian group Hamas. The parents, mostly mothers, believe the alert was uncalled for and endangers their children. They expressed concern about the district's responsibility for spreading "dangerous misinformation" and called for the Cobb Board of Education to be more sensitive in the future. They believe the notification mentioning Hamas endangers students and makes them vulnerable to bullying. Parents suggested the district should focus more on potential mass shootings rather than threats from foreign entities. STORY 5: Powder Springs Native Makes Racing History Myles Rowe, a native of Powder Springs, achieved racing history by becoming the first African-American driver to win a major U.S. open-wheel championship, the 2023 USF Pro 2000 title. He was also the first Black driver to win an IndyCar-sanctioned race in August 2021. The Powder Springs City Council recognized his achievements and presented a Certificate of Achievement to his parents. Rowe's journey in racing started at the age of 4 when he developed a passion for karting. Despite the financial burdens and challenges, he persevered, earned a degree in film and screen studies, and joined professional racing teams, ultimately securing the USF Pro 2000 championship and a scholarship package for INDY NXT in 2024. We'll be back in a moment Break: TEDS - DAYCO – POWERS STORY 6: 3rd Annual Georgia Food + Wine Festival is March 21-24 The 3rd Annual Georgia Food + Wine Festival, presented by Georgia Grown, is scheduled for March 21-24, 2024, at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. This culinary and beverage celebration will feature Georgia celebrity chefs, local artisans, farmers, craft spirits, beers, and global wine, spirits, and beer brands. Georgia Grown will serve as the Title Sponsor, showcasing its members in various ways. The festival offers a wide range of events for all tastes and budgets, including tasting events, shopping, and live music. Early Bird advance discount tickets will be available from November 1, offering up to 40% savings on festival events until December 31. STORY 7: Kennesaw State Scholarship Celebrates Professor and Late Husband's Love of Travel Kennesaw State University professor Teresa Raczek and her late husband Brian LaRaia shared a passion for travel and gourmet cooking inspired by their adventures. After Brian's passing in 2021, they aimed to honor his memory by helping others explore the world and gain new perspectives. They established the Brian Olcott LaRaia Traveling Scholarship with an initial gift of $50,000 in the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2022. To further support the scholarship, Raczek recently contributed a planned gift of over $200,000. The scholarship is designed to be need-based and intends to send one student per year abroad, reflecting Brian's belief in the transformative power of travel for young people. The scholarship is seen as an investment in creating global citizens who can shape a brighter future. Developer Christopher Hunt was escorted from a Cobb Board of Commissioners hearing after repeatedly disrupting proceedings related to a proposal for a subdivision in south Cobb. Hunt had proposed 11 eco-friendly homes on 6.5 acres, but Commissioner Monique Sheffield raised concerns over the topography of the land. Hunt filed a lawsuit in November against Commissioner JoAnn Birrell and the county seeking $100m in damages over the denial of a previous proposal. Hunt called for zoning policies to be made more friendly to sustainable building and said variances were needed to counter outdated rules. The proposal was denied by the commission. Plus, as we approach the Masters, stay tuned for John Bednarowski's hole by hole tour of Augusta National, presented by Ingles Markets. A 30-year-old man from Mableton, Robert Colt Smith, has been arrested for arson and murder after allegedly starting a deadly house fire in south Cobb last week. Police claim that Smith started a vehicle fire which spread to a nearby home, causing the death of two people and six animals. Smith is also facing charges for assaulting and battering his girlfriend on two occasions in February. The girlfriend lived at the home that burned down. Smith is facing charges of two counts of murder, three counts of arson, and aggravated cruelty to animals. He is being held at the Cobb jail without eligibility for bond. Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens has become the highest-paid sheriff among the four most populous counties in metro Atlanta after receiving a $25,000 pay raise. The Georgia General Assembly approved the raise, bringing Owens' salary to $195,000. Previously, police chief Stuart VanHoozer earned $191,908, former public safety director Randy Crider earned $193,250, and interim director Bill Johnson earned $190,745. All Cobb legislators in attendance for the House and Senate votes on the bill supported it. The Association of County Commissioners of Georgia recommends a minimum salary of $136,011 for sheriffs serving counties with 500,000 residents, with adjustments made for cost of living expenses. The Georgia Food and Wine Festival, presented by Georgia Grown, is set to take place from Thursday through Sunday at Marietta's Jim Miller Park. The festival offers a range of events, such as the barbecue extravaganza “Fired Up”, an afternoon of food and drink in the “Savor” event, and the family-friendly “Sunday Funday” festival finale. Attendees will be able to enjoy unlimited beverage tastings, along with gourmet bites, and culinary credits can be purchased. Ticket prices start at $25 for general admission, with VIP tickets available for $165. A VIP Lounge experience, featuring specialty drinks and souvenir cups, is also offered. Three 8th grade Girl Scouts from Troop 383, based in Marietta, received the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta's Council Young Women of Distinction Award for their community leadership. Marissa McEckron and Koby Wilson established a pet food bank within the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at their church to help families with food insecurities feed their pets. They also created a pamphlet with information on healthy pet food and low-cost/free vaccination resources. Alex Pritt designed a Calm Room at Cobb Horizon High School to help students feel safe and comfortable, featuring bean bag chairs, plants, and fidget toys. Each student can stay for 15 minutes once per day, with no electronics allowed. After Kennesaw State's A-Sun championship and gritty performance in the NCAA tournament, coach Amir Abdur-Rahim has become a popular man, and has his name linked to a few high profile jobs. Will the Owls' head man stay in Cobb County? Cobb Travel & Tourism has launched a new initiative called Cobbunity, which aims to celebrate diversity in visitors, residents and tourism in Cobb County. The project will focus on arts, music, sports, conventions, trade shows, groups, attractions, venues, hotels, filmmakers and more. Cobbunity.org will provide information about inclusive events, accessible attractions and sensory-friendly places. The program will be a central component of the 2023 marketing campaign, according to CT&T CEO Holly Quinlan. Ethan Smith and Brody McQueen each shot 69 to help lead Mount Paran Christian to a nine-shot victory in the Cobb County Invitational earlier this week at City Club Marietta. The Eagles shot a team total of 7-under par 277 in the two-day event, which saw teams played nine holes each day. Mount Paran shot 5-under on the second day to pull away from Harrison and Walton. “I thought it was a good couple of days,” Mount Paran coach Scott Varner said. “We used all six guys scores, which is pretty cool.” North Cobb Christian's JB Knight won the individual title, shooting a 5-under 66. It was the second straight invitational victory for Mount Paran, which finished 22 strokes better than it did last year. Smith and McQueen tied for second, while Tucker Thompson, Sam Binkley and Zach Peterson each tied for eighth at 73, Jace Butcher was 14th with a 74 and Conner Bohn shot 81. And now, as we get closer to the start of the 2023 Masters, Times-Journal Incorporated sports editor John Bednarowski joins the show to continue to take us on a tour of Augusta National presented by Ingles. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. A Marietta man received a 22-year prison sentence this week after pleading guilty to charges of rape, child molestation, and aggravated sexual battery. Armando Ramos also received an additional 18 years on probation after his prison term is completed from Cobb Senior Superior Court Judge Stephen Schuster. Ramos was accused of molesting an 11-year-old victim several years ago, which was reported on August 10, 2020, per the DA's office. He was arrested the same day. He pled guilty to the charges on the morning the case was set to go to trial. The 150-year-old covered bridge on Concord Road in Smyrna is reopened after once again being hit by a vehicle and closing for repairs for the second time in three weeks. Though the bridge itself was spared damage, Cobb County said in an alert, its protective beam was hit by a rental truck and required repairing. The driver will face a citation and the insurance will be billed for any costs. Almost all of the incidents at the bridge in recent years have involved rental vans whose drivers aren't familiar with the area and ignore the multiple warning signs. The historic covered bridge has been the site of crashes and closures that have grown too numerous to count, the most recent occurring on January 20. The bridge's low clearance, indicated by abundant signage around the bridge, is the cause of most of the wrecks. The bridge was built in 1872 and is the county's only remaining covered bridge still in use. In 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team's non-profit arm, JO Gives, will host its Fred Seidell Memorial ALS Texas Hold'em Tournament on February 25 at 6 p.m. The tournament, benefitting the Emory ALS Center, will have food and drinks and a silent auction. Returning as the Celebrity Guest Host is Terance Mathis of the Atlanta Falcons. Mathis has been an avid supporter of this event as many NFL players have suffered from ALS. Additional celebrity guests include NFL players Jerome Bettis of the Steelers and Jessie Tuggle, Bob Whitfield and Chuck Smith, all from the Falcons. JO GIVES supports ALS research as its founder, Janice Overbeck, lost her father to the disease in 2015. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard put on a show with 28 points and seven assists, got some help from his friends and Number 1 Wheeler beat Number 3 Newton 79-60 on Monday in a showcase game of Georgia's two McDonald's All-Americans broadcast to the nation on ESPNU. That is not to say that Stephon Castle, the Rams' 6-7, 210-pound point guard, did not put on a show himself. The Connecticut signee, also considered one of the top five players in the senior class, scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds, but many of those points came when Newton was already down double digits in the second half. Fellow Southern Cal signee Arrinten Page, a 6-9, 220-pound forward, scored nine of his 17 points in the second half. In the fourth quarter, he scored five straight points, first on a dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. Then, after Newton answered with a 3-pointer, Page showed his range by hitting a 3 of his own to put Wheeler up 68-52 midway through the fourth period. Iowa State signee Jelani Hamilton added 15 points for Wheeler, while Indiana signee Jakai Newton, playing in just his second game of the season after recovering from a knee injury, had 17 for Newton. Collier appreciated the special matchup against his longtime friend. He said he and Castle have been friends, teammates and opponents since the second grade, and while Monday's game provided some extra incentive, Collier understands it may be a precursor to what may come in the Class six A state playoffs. The Kennesaw Police Department is investigating an alleged assault against a man near the Kennesaw State University campus. The incident happened in the West 22 apartment complex, located where Cherokee Street and McCollum Parkway meet, just after midnight on January 22, according to Officer David Buchanan, Kennesaw Police spokesman. Jalique Rosemond, who is Black, alleged he was beaten by two white men who repeatedly called him the N-word, according to a report about the incident issued by Officer Seager, who responded to the call. Seager's report added that Rosemond had a bloody nose, a detail also included in a report from another Kennesaw police officer who responded to the scene. Buchanan said in the release that a detective has been in touch with Rosemond since Tuesday, adding that the suspects in the case left the complex following the alleged assault. Police are asking residents with any information about the incident to call Kennesaw Police Criminal Investigations Division or Crime Stoppers. An ethics complaint has been filed against Commissioner Jerica Richardson over an alleged conflict of interest in the county's ongoing redistricting controversy. Filed Monday by Debbie Fisher, who is listed as vice chairman of Party and Grassroots Development on the Cobb Republican Party's website, the complaint accuses Richardson of violating county rules in voting twice last year to support the county's home rule redistricting effort, which is aimed at redrawing the commission district boundaries to keep Richardson in office. Filed with the Cobb Board of Ethics, the complaint asks for a judge to void those two votes by Richardson. Doing so would leave the split of the vote on the home rule effort at 2-2 between the board's Democrats and Republicans. The complaint takes aim at a political group — For Which It Stance — which was created last year by Richardson and east Cobb's Mindy Seger to support her bid to keep her seat. Richardson's interest in the group means she not only had a personal conflict of interest in the redistricting votes, Fisher alleges, but a financial one as well. For Which It Stance was formed in March 2022, about five weeks after the Republican-sponsored district map which drew Richardson out of her seat was filed in the General Assembly. Richardson is listed as the nonprofit's registered agent, while Seger is its executive director. Since the Board of Commissioners' three Democrats began their home rule effort in the fall, the group has called on residents to support Richardson, solicited donations on its website, and is selling branded merchandise (T-shirts, tote bags and the like). And on October 11 and 25, when the Board of Commissioners took its two votes to assert home rule and redraw the lines, audience members bore signs from the nonprofit. The allegations around For Which It Stance were previously raised by Republican Commissioner Keli Gambrill, who said Richardson should have disclosed the nonprofit when the board met in executive session last year to discuss the home rule challenge. In the past, Richardson has said that she did not need to disclose the nonprofit, and that Gambrill should have been aware of it. Marietta's LiveSafe Resources has announced its 2023 honorees for the group's 38th Tribute to Women of Achievement. Each year, the organization honors 15 women leaders, nominated by their peers, who demonstrate outstanding leadership in their personal, professional and volunteer endeavors. These 15 outstanding women from the metro Atlanta area were recently chosen through a competitive application process, and one of them will also be named “2023 Woman of the Year” at the Tribute to Achievement awards gala on March 17. This year's honorees include women at the top of their game in Cobb's business, nonprofit, and government worlds. For a full list of honorees, please visit MDJ Online dot com. This year's Tribute to Women of Achievement gala will be held at the Renaissance Waverly hotel in Cumberland at 6 p.m. on March 17. More information is available at Live Safe Resources dot org. e Georgia Food + Wine Festival, a culinary and beverage celebration of all things Georgia, will take place March 23-26 at Jim R. Scoot Henderson became the Kell boys basketball team's all-time leading scorer, led it to the Class AAAAAA state championship game and wowed most basketball experts in the process. Henderson's constant success was one of the reasons he made the unprecedented move two years ago to reclassify, graduate early and become the youngest professional basketball player in U.S. history at the age of 17. Now, after nearly two years in the NBA's developmental G League and making himself into the presumptive Number 2 pick in this summer's NBA draft, Henderson will be recognized by Kell for his trailblazing efforts and effect on its program. The school will retire Henderson's Number 0 jersey in a ceremony between Kell's girls and boys basketball games against Chattahoochee on Tuesday. Kell boys coach Jermaine Sellers said the timing worked out where the Longhorns had a home game and Henderson's team, the Las Vegas-based G League Ignite, had a nine-day break to allow him time to return home. It will be particularly special evening for the Henderson family, with Scoot not be the only sibling having their jersey retired. During the same ceremony, his sister, Crystal, will also be honored with the retirement of her Number 30. Crystal Henderson, who supplanted her brother as the all-time leading scorer in Kell basketball history — boys or girls — has led the Longhorns to a 15-5 overall record and 8-0 mark in Region six five A. Kell is Number 1 in Class five A, coming off a game against Cambridge in which she had 37 points and 13 rebounds. The retirement ceremony is expected to be at approximately 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, following the completion of the girls game. Sellers said the NBA and the G League asked to be involved in the evening, so the College Park Skyhawks — the Atlanta Hawks' affiliate — will be represented. Its dance team will perform at halftime of the girls game, and there will be shirt giveaways. In its quest to build a looping transit and trail network around Cobb's bustling commercial district, the Cumberland Community Improvement District is shaking every funding tree it can find. The CID's governing board agreed Thursday to ante up about $1.7 million in the hopes of securing a lucrative federal grant to advance the project, known as the Cumberland Sweep. If successful, the U.S. Department of Transportation would provide about $7 million toward planning and design of the Sweep which includes a self-driving shuttle, to circle the commercial district. The DOT's RAISE program — formerly known as BUILD and TIGER under past federal administrations — is expected to dole out nearly $2.3 billion this coming year for transportation and infrastructure projects. But the winners are an exclusive club; no more than a few dozen projects are greenlit nationwide each year. In recent years, only a handful of projects in Georgia have received funding. CID Executive Director Kim Menefee said this will be the third time the organization has sought the grant. Menefee said she's been in talks with Cobb's federal lawmakers about backing the application, who have already directed some funding to the Sweep in the form of congressional earmarks and submitted letters of support for the grant application. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Stephanie Stuckey, the new CEO of Stuckey's, bought back her family's brand that her grandfather started nearly 70 years ago. Just about everybody has a Stuckey‘s story, recalling a time when they took road trips in the family station wagon and found “highway happiness” at one of their stores.Stephanie has a great story going from environmental attorney and fourteen year Georgia State Rep and it was great to have her on the Side Hustle City podcast. Below is a letter from Stephanie to her valuable customers. You can also learn more about the history of Stuckey's. Her blog is also amazing!“If unthinkingly you render a disservice to a neighbor, all is not lost. You can see him or her again soon and make amends. But should a traveler leave one of our Shoppes with a feeling of dissatisfaction, then we can indeed despair. The traveler is gone. With them has also gone their respect for you and for the company you represent – and it is not likely that any of us ever again will see him or her in order to make things right.”– W.S. Stuckey, Sr., founder of Stuckey'sThe words above were set down as a guiding principle for our business many years ago when Stuckey's Pecan Shoppes first came into being. More than 80 years later, we're still on the nation's highways offering friendship to every traveler. Through three generations of the Stuckey family – with the Company falling out of family hands for decades – we have never departed from this principle. And we never will.In the making of our tasty snacks — from our famous Pecan Log Rolls and Divinities, to flavored pecans and popcorn — only fresh and wholesome ingredients are used. We take every possible step to protect their freshness and flavor. And we take pride in being a Georgia Grown-certified company. Thanks for joining me for today's conversation with David Zelski, Emmy Award-winning Producer & Host at Dizzy Productions, LLC based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Many of you will recognize David's voice from shows like Georgia Traveler and his outdoor adventure show, The Excursion. But I was most excited to talk to him about one of his newest shows, A Fork in the Road which he produces and hosts in partnership with Georgia Grown and which is aired on GPB. I had so much fun talking with David who is as passionate about sharing the stories of Georgia's farmers and producers as I am. It was really interesting to me get his perspective on local food and how his own views have been influenced through the process of reporting on Georgia agriculture. I think this audience will really appreciate his perspective and enthusiasm for our local farms and farmers. I hope you'll enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed being able to do this interview. Here are the links to some of David's shows including: A Fork in the Road, The Excursion and Pets Welcome Here. Be sure to check them out if you haven't already! As always, THANK YOU, to the beautiful people and awesome businesses who support the work of Southern Soil through advertisements and sponsorships. Especially to our Season Two Podcast Sponsors: Savannah Hydroponics and Organics, Chelsea Green Publishing and Morning Belle Farms! Also ... a big thank you to our Community Builders: Haylards Restaurant Group, Brighter Day and the Sentient Bean for their continued support over the years! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/southernsoil/message

Suga's Pimento Cheeses has added two new mouth-watering flavors, Gourmet Pesto & Feta and Black Truffle, to an already-diverse menu of pimento cheese offerings. The new options join other cravable and popular flavors already on Suga's menu including Bacon Asiago, Smoked Gouda, Roasted Poblano and Monterey Jack, an extra spicy version with serrano peppers. Suga's offers eight total traditional flavors and four vegan pimento cheese options. Suga's Pimento Cheeses also launches a new interactive web site to further penetrate local Atlanta shops, larger markets in the Atlanta metro, and expand throughout the Southern region. The new web site will feature pimento cheese recipe inspiration, the story behind the cheese, a list of local stores and markets where Suga's Pimento Cheeses can be purchased and an e-commerce store where customers can purchase their favorite flavors. Web: https://sugasfood.com Follow: @sugaspimentocheeses “Pesto & Feta and Black Truffle are direct responses to what our customers asked for,” said Chef Suga, founder and creator of Suga's Pimento Cheeses. “Even though COVID-19 set everyone back, we are blessed to expand and grow our presence in stores throughout Atlanta and into Tennessee. We're confident the web relaunch will help us bring our pimento cheese to even more raving fans.” Stacey West, aka Chef Suga, and her pimento cheeses have been sought after throughout metro Atlanta thanks to her memorable presence at local farmer's markets and hyper-local shops as well as an early foray into a weekly Powder Springs brunch spot where the fan favorite was her signature Southern cheese spread. Chef Suga graduated from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta with dreams of running a restaurant. After working with some of the top chefs in the Atlanta Metro area, including Chef Hilary of The Hil at Serenbe and Chef Holly, executive chef of Georgia Grown, she launched Suga's Enterprises, LLC in April 2016, taking over the kitchen and dining room of a local Powder Springs restaurant one day only for two months to serve Sunday brunch and try her hand at the restaurant industry. Stacey, her son Quinton Jones, who is also a chef, and her husband Robert West created southern brunch favorites such as chicken and waffles with maple butter, catfish po' boys, sweet potato corn muffins, and pimento cheese and grits. While they enjoyed the entire menu, customers overwhelmingly latched onto the pimento cheese. Suga's Pimento Cheeses launched just over a year later, in June 2017, thanks to the raving fans and high demand for the creative pimento cheese brand. “Our pimento cheeses are perfect on burgers, eggs, in grilled cheese or just fresh out of the container,” Chef Suga said. When she received requests for a spicier version in addition to her original pimento cheese, Chef Suga started experimenting with different types of spicy peppers, started selling her pimento cheese spread at the Marietta Square Farmers Market and sold out on the first day. Eventually the West's grew the business to many other markets and stores around metro Atlanta and into Tennessee and launched nine different flavors of pimento cheese. They debuted a 10th flavor, the smoked gouda pimento cheese, at the 2018 Atlanta Cheese Fest earning a finalist spot in the 2019 Flavor of Georgia food competition. Chef Suga and her team uses farm fresh, no preservatives and small batch ingredients from local restaurant supply companies, Atlanta farmers and other local vendors to ensure the highest and most fresh quality. Suga's Pimento Cheeses' vegan options are dairy, soy and nut free and contain potato and corn-based cheese, vegan mayo, vegan cream cheese and other non-dairy ingredients. Stacey earned the nickname “Suga” (pronounced “Shuh-gah”) when her first grandbaby was born. She didn't want to be called “grandma” so her daughter, Chanty, came up with the alternative “Suga.” She quickly began to be known as “Chef Suga.” Suga's Pimento Cheeses is headquartered in Powder Springs, Ga. and the pimento cheese is made locally in Marietta, Ga. Customers are more than intrigued by it all, they are smitten and often come back for their favorites which include; Fried Green Tomatoes, the fantastic fish on Fried Fish Fridays or the infamous Sunday Brunch. Its popularity and exquisite cuisine have not gone unnoticed. Sweet Potato Café has been awarded the prestigious “100 Plates Locals Love” distinction by Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Tourism Division (GDEcD) for its Fried Green Tomatoes. It was the first restaurant in Stone Mountain to be recognized by Atlanta Eats, as well as highlighted on its website. In addition, Sweet Potato Café has been featured in the AJC as a top five OTP restaurant for its Sunday brunch. Although Chef Karen hails from a family of chefs, it was actually preparing meals for her children that she fell head over heels in love with cooking. So much so, that she went on to receive her culinary training from Atlanta Technical College. Which was followed by five years of perfecting and honing her craft while operating a successful catering business. Chef Karen is a Georgia Grown member and over the years has provided cooking demonstrations at Grady Memorial Hospital for its diabetic patients. She joined First Lady Michelle Obama’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative, working with the Drew Charter School in Atlanta, and volunteered at Project Open Hands. She has also partnered with Atlanta Area Schools for the deaf, providing needed skills to students needed to work in a restaurant environment.

Georgia was once a leader in the oyster canning business, but the last cannery closed in the 1960s. In decades since, the local bivalves had a reputation as too wild, too muddy and too much work, so they didn't show up on a lot of menus. In the past few years, however, a group of people attuned to the estuaries of Glynn, Camden, Liberty and McIntosh counties have helped revive the Georgia oyster — through farming. Their stories are the center of André Gallant's A High Low Tide: The Revival of a Southern Oyster .
