Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast and a happy belated Record Store Day to you! Since you hang out at the Video Store, you are obviously a fan of physical media, and I hope that includes vinyl records. I've selected four films this week that look at films featuring records and record stores. High Fidelity (2000)First up is High Fidelity featuring John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Todd Luiso, Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Cusack, and Tim Robbins. Reeling from a big break-up with Laura (Iben Hjejle), Rob Gordon (John Cusack), recounts to the audience his top 5 break-ups of all time, the same way he would his top 5 favorite albums. As he walks the audience through his break-ups, he starts to work through his relational issues. It's a film about working through your own problems, taking responsibility for how you've hurt other people, and trying to be better. And with its setting of Rob's record store, a killer soundtrack, and all the vinyl records everywhere, it's a great pick for this theme. Sing Street (2016)Sing Street is the best film nobody saw in 2016. Set in the early-mid 80s, Conor is forced to change schools due to the economic downturn in Ireland at the time and his parents' looming separation. Struggling to fit in, Conor finds solace in music and music videos with his brother Brendan. Conor decides he wants to start a band that forms an accidental community among his bandmates, an aspiring model, Raphina, and even the school bully. Conor and his friends start to find hope through music, even in a seemingly hopeless and desperate situation. There are loads of things to love about Sing Street, but the original music really makes this film something special. The soundtrack even got a vinyl release, so look for it at your local record shop, though, heads up, it's a bit hard to track down in the US. Pirate Radio (released as The Boat That Rocked in the UK) (2009)Set in 1966, Pirate Radio tells the story of a young teenage boy, Carl, who is sent to live with his godfather on Radio Rock, the pirate radio station ship anchored in the North Sea, broadcasting rock music to the UK. Featuring a killer ensemble cast, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Billy Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Emma Thompson, January Jones, Kenneth Branagh, Chris O'Dowd, and so many more, this is a wonderful film about getting into trouble for the right reasons. The film centers on the love of music and finding where you fit in. Plus, look at all that beautiful, vintage radio equipment and the shelves and shelves of records. Absolutely gorgeous. Empire Records (1995)The last film I've selected for today is Empire Records. While set in a record shop, this is a film that's really more about finding out who you are and finding where you fit. For the group of young misfits that work at Empire Records, it's right there at the record store. This is a story about protecting that found family and celebrating the good things in your life. Plus you'll want to have a dance party with your chosen family at the end of the movie. Thanks for joining us this week at the Video Store Podcast. As the great philosopher Corrine Bailey Rae says, “Girl, put your records on. Tell me your favorite song. Just go ahead let your hair down,” while you spin some records and movies about records. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 5ú lá de mí an Mhárta, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1986 chuaigh an figiúr de bhuirgléireacht in Éirinn síos. Tháinig an nuacht amach nach raibh an méid is mó an bhliain sin I gcomparáid le tosach na 80dí, ach ní raibh aon laghdú in árachas. I 2005 chaill Éire I gcoinne an Fhrainc sa rugbaí ach bhí cúpla amháin I bPáras an-sásta. Chuir Alan ó Bhaile Átha Cliath cheist ar a chailín Gillian chun é a phósadh taobh amuigh den Stade De France. I 1999 tháinig an nuacht amach go mbeadh scéim de thimpeall 1 milliún punt chun cosain a thabhairt chuig bóthar I Killkee agus áiteanna eile timpeall an limistéar ó chreimeadh timpeall an chósta. I 2010 bhí seans maith I gcomhair na mná timpeall an chontae mar dúirt siad go mbeadh Inis an ámharach de bharr go mbeidís ag fáil mála a bhí ag Kate Winslet. Bhí siad chun é a fháil de bharr tiomsú airgid do Haiti. Sin Take That le How Deep Is Your Love – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1996. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2006 chuaigh Corrine Bailey Rae chuig uimhir a haon sa Bhreatain lena halbam nua. Bhí Corinne ach an cheathrú bean ón Bhreatain chun dul chuig uimhir a haon dá chéad albam. I 2017 chuaigh Ed Sheeran chuig uimhir a haon sna cairteacha lena tríú halbam divide. Chuaigh gach amhrán ar an albam chuig na cairteacha, agus shroich gach ceann uimhir 20 de bharr go raibh a lán daoine ag éisteacht leo. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh giotáraí John Frusciante I Nua Eabhrac I 1970 agus rugadh aisteoir Matt Lucas I Londain ar an lá seo I 1974 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo.

The Accidental Gods podcast exists to set the conditions for emergence into a new system: to bring a critical mass of us to a place where emergence into a new system is a rewarding reality. To get there, we bring to you some of the many astonishingly creative, compassionate, switched-on people who are working at the leading edge of change. Alan Lane is one of these people. He's the artistic director of the theatre company Slung Low, which in turn is one of the most innovative theatre companies in the UK, if not in the world. Absolutely embedded in the neighbourhood in which they work, Slung Low are committed to their core principles of 'Be Kind, Be Useful, Everyone gets to do what they want. Nobody gets to tell anyone else what they can't do.' (within obvious limits - as you'll hear). Alan is also the author of the book 'The Club on the Edge of Town' which is subtitled 'A Pandemic Memoir' but is so, so much more - this is the story of how Slung Low arose, how it came to be entered in the oldest Working Mens' Club in England (unable to change the name), and ultimately became a Food Bank during the pandemic. It's the story of standing in the rain, of keeping promises, of integrity and grit and sheer bloody-minded tenacity. Most of all, it's a story of how a small group of committed people made a huge difference to the lives of their neighbours and community. It is also the story of the culture clash that you'll hear more about in the podcast, and that led, ultimately, to Slung Low moving elsewhere in Leeds. Since then, their transformation to being part of the team that put on the utterly magical opening event of the Leeds Year of Culture 2023, where the city's most famous pop star spoke to a god - is the stuff of legend. In their new world, their core purpose is to make Awe and Wonder happen - and they are doing it with commitment, integrity, enthusiasm and raw inspiration. In this episode, Alan tells the story that led from standing in the rain in Nottinghill to creating technical magic on a stage in Leeds. We explore the power of story to change people's lives and the value of commitment to the things we believe in. We dig deep into Alan's absolute moral imperatives and his compassion for the people around him, people he values, people he teaches to value themselves in a world that, in his words, 'teaches us we're cogs in a machine and we're scum' is heartbreakingly wonderful. Truly, if the whole world was inspired as Leeds is being inspired, we'd be in a different place. (And the god that rose out of the river was a world first: made with drones, everyone said it was impossible. And Alan and the team made it happen anyway. How good of a metaphor is that for what we have to do now in our emerging new system?)Bio: Alan Lane is Artistic Director of Slung Low directing most of their work over the last decade including projects with the Barbican, the RSC, The Almeida, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Liverpool Everyman, Sheffield Theatres, Singapore Arts Festival and the Lowry. Slung Low make large scale people's theatre work on stages, trains, castles, swimming pools, fishing boats and town centres. In 2017 Slung Low headlined Hull UK City of Culture 2017 with Flood by James Phillips: a 4 Part epic performed online, live and on the BBC. Over half a million people saw a part of Flood. It won a Royal Televisual Award Yorkshire for innovation in drama. In 2019 the company took over management of the oldest working men's club in Britain, The Holbeck in South Leeds. Initially, they ran this venue as a Pay What You Decide creative and community space, but during lockdown, they transformed into one of the only non-means-tested Food Banks in the country. Their work there was transformative and Alan wrote the book 'The Club on the Edge of Town' out of their experiences there. Late last year, the company moved venues to a warehouse next to their favourite primary school and began to help organise the astonishing, miraculous, technologically outstanding (and magically wonderful) opening event to Leeds Year of Culture 2023, which culminated in Corrine Bailey Rae talking to a god in front of a rugby stadium filled with 10,000 artists. Sara Carter is a BBC trained, mixing and mastering engineer based in Hampshire, UK. Sara started recording and mixing music in the mid 90's as a hobby from a small home studio after playing guitar for many years. Then, in 2000 in a bold move, she decided to sell her house, give up her established career of 16 years and relocate to London to turn that hobby into her new full-time career. She studied at the SAE Institute in London gaining an Audio Engineering Diploma and soon after secured a position as a BBC Radio Studio Manager (sound engineer) working on the UK's most listened to radio shows, live music sessions and major music festivals across all of the BBC's main music networks. She also created the foley and sound effects on several radio drama productions and comedy shows. Above all, she relished working in the BBC's Maida Vale Studios where she developed her mixing and critical listening skills, working on sessions with a wide variety of artists from Crowded House to The Cure and Adele to The Black Keys to name just a few. She's been officially credited on records from Corrine Bailey Rae, KT Tunstall and Girls Aloud amongst others. In 2009, Sara decided to take a break from broadcasting and left the BBC to explore a different creative interest and became a Brewer in a small award-winning microbrewery (Yes, I know a bit random but it still involved mixing, just not music!). In recent years, however, she had felt a strong calling back to music and engineering, returning to the industry with her online mixing and mastering business called Music Mix Pro. Sara is passionate about mixing music and strives to exceed her clients' expectations and to make the whole process as rewarding as possible for both the artist and herself. MALIA - "Undone" from the 2022 album What's After 'I Love You?' on MALIA/Black Sea Music. Seattle-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter MALIA recently unveiled her latest set of soulful R&B tunes with What's After ‘I Love You.' Following her 2021 debut Unpolished, the vulnerable album examines a past relationship in the wake of immense heartbreak. Our Song of the Day is the record's closer “Undone,” in which MALIA comes to terms with the fact that the relationship is now forever changed and even when her ex asks her to come over, it won't be the same for her. The damage is done and the magic gone so it's time to focus on putting herself back together piece-by-piece. “This is the most vulnerable I've ever been in my writing and it makes me feel so exposed to share but also empowered because the growth I experienced through this intense pain created the best version of me yet,” MALIA told American Songwriter about the new EP. “Sharing these songs with the world forces me to continue to remain open and live from a place of love over fear. I hope my story reminds people that moments of darkness however painful, actually hold our hand and help us elevate.” This summer, MALIA will be supporting Corrine Bailey Rae on tour with a stop in Seattle on Sunday, July 17th at the Moore Theatre. Below, watch the visual for What's After ‘I Love You' highlight “Only One.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today’s episode:I Only Have Eyes for YouI was listening to Spotify, playing classic Lode Runner online (yes, I am played-the-original-Lode Runner-on-an-Apple IIe-years-old) and falling down Spotify holes, when a song by Timothy Bloom came on. I liked the sound of his voice and went to his artist page to find that I was already following him and had even “clicked the heart button” on one of his songs it’s called The Beginning (Work it Out).I began playing it to refresh my memory and heard the haunting first notes of I Only Have Eyes for You by The Flamingos sampled in the background. My guest today is Sara Carter, a BBC trained, mixing and mastering engineer based in Basingstoke in the UK. Sara started recording and mixing music in the mid-’90s from a small home studio as a hobby. In 2000, at the somewhat ripe age of 34, she decided to find out how to turn that hobby into a full-time career. She studied at the SAE Institute in London gaining an Audio Engineering Diploma, then went on to work for the BBC in London as a Studio Manager. There she engineered many of the UKs most popular radio shows and live music sessions. Working from the BBCs Maida Vale Studios, she developed her critical listening skills by working with a wide variety of artists on numerous sessions and has been credited on records by Corrine Bailey Rae and KT Tunstall amongst others. In 2009, Sara decided to take a break from broadcasting and left the BBC to explore a different career in brewing. However, in recent years, she has felt a strong calling back to music and returned with her online mixing and mastering business serving unsigned rock and indie bands from all over the world. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Anthem by Rush. I shouldn’t need to say much about this one, it’s literally based on an Ayn Rand book’s themes. It’s also a kick ass rock song without being overly complex in lyric or musicality. This week in I Heard This Happened: different Jazz’s. Does that make sense? I said it cause it sounds confusing.. Nicky’s album this week is Underwater by Elephant Gym. Somewhere between jazz, funk, modern prog and hip hop, this album is great of purely thinky music. It keeps spiraling down, down, down. It’s primarily instrumental but does incorporate a few different vocalist on the second half. My favorite part is where the MC on Bad Dream keeps shifting between what I assume is Japanese and English. Lizzie brings us Sprinkled Eyes by Dotschy Reinhardt. An interesting jazz guitar slash singer songwriter album by an German artist. It has moments where it carries the breezy feeling of Corrine Bailey Rae but with a more complicated guitar emphasis. Clearly trying to show off some jazz chops. Uber-feminist that I am *chuckle* I’m always happy to promote lady guitar players, maybe it’ll rub off on my daughter and get her away from Rihanna. I’d like to add that the english as a second language accent is endearing to me, especially since it;s jazz. This week’s interview is with Alex Shaw, host of The Classical Liberal Podcast. Alex is I believe our first non-Ancap but I couldn’t resist having him on because his pod is super-duper entertaining. And as a guest he delivered the goods. Working Class Audio #194 with Sara Carter !!! Sara Carter is a BBC trained, mixing and mastering engineer based in Hampshire, UK. Sara started recording and mixing music in the mid 90’s as a hobby from a small home studio after playing guitar for many years. Above all, she relished working in the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios where she developed her mixing and critical listening skills, working on sessions with a wide variety of artists from Crowded House to The Cure and Adele to The Black Keys to name just a few. She’s been officially credited on records from Corrine Bailey Rae, KT Tunstall and Girls Aloud amongst others. About this Interview: Sara joins me to talk about her incredible journey that took her through the motor trade to audio and the BBC to brewing and back to audio as a freelancer. Rob and Seth return to Terminal West to pick Eddie Roberts’ brain about all things New Mastersounds. However, the conversation kicks off with Eddie explaining how his new band Matador came together, and how he and the other musicians (Alan Evans, Kevin Scott, Chris Spies, Adryon de Leon and Kimberly Dawson) came together and that they plan on making this a permanent band, as opposed to a mere, "project." They also talk about how the most recent New Mastersounds cd Renewable Energy is appropriately-titled, and how it represented a number of firsts for the band. We learn about how some of the songs were inspired and titled, particularly “Chicago Girl” - and how the Chicago Girl suggested a cover with which none of the band members were familiar, yet which still made the record. Eddie also explains how de Leon’s creative input on this record is different from how he expects it will continue to be in Matador, and about why tNM is starting to become more interested in recording records “live” in the studio. We learn how the band’s songwriting has evolved from Eddie being the clear principal source to its current predominantly collaborative nature. Eddie talks about how his picking style comes from his jazz and classical background, and why his playing style is closer to that of a bluegrass player than a rock player. He also relates about how John Scofield almost lost a gig to a storm that happened while Eddie was dining with him, and shares some Sco insight. This leads to a discussion about Miles Davis which in turn leads to Eddie comparing and contrasting one way his approach differs from that of the virtuosic organist, Robert Walter. He also relates some of his experiences with Corrine Bailey Rae as Eddie has known her since she was a bartender and watched her have repeated success starting with her being only the fourth British act in history to have her debut cd debut at Number 1 on the Billboard charts. Eddie also explains some of the ways tNM's early days playing in London impacted the type of players they are today (for more on this, check out Episode 15 with tNM drummer Simon Allen). We also find out what motivated Eddie to start his successful charitable organization, The Payback and about how Eddie felt about getting to work with heroes of his like Ernest Ranglin and The Meters. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. In this episode we are taking things into the dark...not really. For those not in the know this weeks' title comes from one of the two movies I reviewed this week. That being Star Trek Into Darkness, it's a fun movie to watch I'm still having a debate if I enjoyed it as much as the Star Trek from 2009. My DVD review this week comes in the form of The Man with the Iron Fists, it's a silly kung fu movie however despite being overtly silly it is actually a decent movie to watch. As always is the Box Office Report and for the Trailer Spot this week is The World's End. And lastly we cannot forget to news and the Closing Comments. Enjoy the show! Opening and Closing Song- Chains by Corrine Bailey Rae (it's from The Man with the Iron Fists soundtrack, I think)
Laura Jane has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in the business, such as Latin Superstar Enrique Iglesias, Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Clarkson, Anastacia, the late Teena Marie, Smash star Katharine McPhee, Kid Rock, Joe Walsh, Aaron Neville, and Florence and the Machine. Laura Jane’s debut album TO MY PLANET BOO was released in 2005. Her first single off the album SUMMERTIME IN THE CITY was a drum n bass track, which pulsated and was woven with what now would be called her signature sweet vocal texture. This song got international airplay and great reviews. Laura Jane most recently released her second solo album, called EVERYTHING CHANGES.It features upright bass, acoustic piano, percussion and acoustic guitar. The sound is a cross between Roberta Flack and Karen Carpenter or for a newer reference Norah Jones and Corrine Bailey Rae. Laura Jane enlisted Jamiseson Trotter as the producer for the album to help achieve the sound and their two heads together created beautiful tracks like Everything Changes, a thoughtful and carefully produced song that is melancholy and yet hopeful. She once again features Brazilian percussion on the song THE ANSWER – which is more of a mantra than a song – and definitely has that signature Laura Jane vocal texture on it, with vocal arrangements by Jason Paige. Other stand out tracks are My Confession which is funky and soulful about a woman being scorned by a man but yet rising up to overcome it. And the beautiful duet called the VOW – featuring Jason Paige could surely be a classic love song. http://www.laurajanemusic.net/
