Ladies and gentlemen - Mike L and Jeff do the UNTHINKABLE and record solo segments for the very first time in the history of Hoagie Mouth. So with that, Jeff leads up with a recap of the - let's not kid ourselves - substantial moves by the Flyers over the last 10 days. A revamped defense, a sniper at forward, and no more Ghostybear or Jake. Did the front office rally around a final push for the Cup, led by Claude? (YES). Then a quick Phillies segment (Oooh Brad Miller what you do to us!)...and then Mike dives into the latest from Sixers-land and the Eagles training camp. Title: Preach, Guard, Live Text: I Timothy 6:20-21 FCF: We often struggle pursuing the right objectives as visible churches Prop: Because people who stray from the gospel leave the faith, we must depend on God’s grace to guard the gospel. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible one more time to I Timothy chapter 6. Well since being your pastor we have gone through Philemon, Jude, Galatians, Matthew, The three epistles of John, and now, after today, I Timothy. As a part of the grand purpose given to all Elders, I aim to teach the whole counsel of God. And to a smaller degree, I Timothy is but 1/3 of our purpose to study through the pastoral epistles. Next week, Jordan Behrendt will be presenting his mission to PNG and also preaching for us from I Corinthians. And the following week we will continue our study in the Pastoral Epistles with Titus. A book written at the same chronological time and with the same theme as I Timothy. As we come to the end of this first letter to Timothy, by way of review, we should try to grasp the full scope of all that Paul has written here. [Slide 2] Chapter 1 – Paul wasted no time getting to exactly what he wanted Timothy to do. In fact, he had already told Timothy what to do as he left for Macedonia. That is to suppress the false teaching of those who were attempting to twist the word of God to pollute the gospel with myths and endless and meaningless disputes. Instead, Timothy ought to preach the true gospel beginning with the law which reveals the sinfulness of men, and ends with the mercy and grace of God to those who are believing in Christ. Timothy’s charge then, in chapter 1, is to supplant false teaching, preach Christ alone, and preach a gospel-formed church. [Slide 3] Chapter 2 – Paul begins his dive into the problems of Ephesus and how the gospel serves to form and reform them into what God desires that they be. First, God desires them to understand the globality of the gospel. That factions of all kinds have been broken, and the gospel goes to all kinds of men. Therefore, they ought to pray for all kinds of men. As a check on this concept though, although the gospel has broken down division with reference to the gospel’s call, the gospel’s effect has not eliminated those divisions as of yet. There are still roles men and women must play within the church. Namely that men ought to be qualified men who publicly pray in worship. And second that women ought to be quiet learners, who do not usurp the interpretational and exhorting role God has given men within the church. [Slide 4] Chapter 3 – Paul continues addressing issues in the church in Ephesus, again with the backdrop of the gospel’s affect in forming the church. He begins by describing the qualifications for the two offices in the church. The Elder and the Deacon. While there is nothing in these lists that is not incumbent upon all Christians, Paul calls higher attention to the necessity that these roles be filled with people who are qualified for them. Paul then reaches the climax of the letter which affirms all he has said and sets up all he is going to say. He states that the church is God’s building that he has formed, His family that He has made, to reveal truth to the world. They do this both by what they confess – and the marvel of those confessions – and also by how they live. [Slide 5] Chapter 4 – Paul readdresses the antagonist to the gospel’s work in the church, false teaching. Paul highlights some specifics of the Ephesian heresy being both a loosening of moral virtues and a restricting of activities that God has given to be enjoyed. In this Paul again commands Timothy to take up the cause of the gospel and keep teaching it even to those who are believers. The effect of the gospel as well as its truth is enough to change people to be different. Paul commands Timothy to set the example and allow the fullness of Christ to dwell in him first. [Slide 6] Chapter 5 – Like with chapter 2, Paul again moves to apply this to the current issues in the Ephesian church. First in how they address each other. Many disputes and fights have broken out and he insists that the gospel constrains them to treat one another like family. In that application the care of widows should be familial as well. First their own blood relatives caring for them and then those in the church. However, widows must be qualified to receive the support from the church. Elders too should be supported by the church, and should be protected from false accusations. However, even the Elder is not above God’s law and should be rebuked if sinning. And as a general principle for life – the gospel’s presence or absence in a person will eventually work itself out in how they live. And although part of chapter 5’s theme but technically in chapter 6, Paul addresses how slaves ought to submit themselves to their earthly authorities. Doubly so if their earthly authorities are believers. Again the overarching principle is that the gospel transforms all our relationships, of all forms. [Slide 7] Chapter 6 – in harmony with chapter 1, Paul returns to the issue at hand. The gospel and its effect on people who truly have it. Those who do not, will be prone to controversies and slandering, bickering and fighting, and will do all this to be seen as godly and wise and thus earning money or respect. But only godliness and contentment from our needs provided truly has eternal dividends. So Timothy must live a Christ-Like life, holding to what he has been taught, and fulfill his command to shepherd his flock. He should instruct his people who are wealthy to enjoy what they have, but not pursue it or boast in it. Rather to give generously. This is the gospel changed person. [Slide 8] Finally, today, Paul will finish his words to Timothy. Perhaps it won’t come as a shock to us when Paul pleads with Timothy one last time to stand for the gospel, avoid things that are not the gospel, and depend on the gospel to raise these things up from His people there in Ephesus. It has been his message throughout the letter… it stands to reason that it remains his message, even to the final words penned. I’ll start reading from verse 20. I am reading from the CSB but you can follow along in the version you prefer or in the pew bible on page 1341. Transition: Let’s finish up this letter and see what Paul teaches in these last two verses and in the book as a whole. I.) Because people who stray from the gospel leave the faith, we must guard the gospel. (20-21a) a. [Slide 9] 20 - Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, i. Let’s start with the back of this phrase and work our way to the front. ii. What has been entrusted to Timothy? iii. I think contextually we could conclude one of two things 1. Either the church itself, its care, protection, growth, and spiritual guidance 2. Or the gospel iv. In truth, both of these hinge upon the other, but given what Paul says in the rest of the letter, it seems that the second option is the best. v. So what does it mean to guard the gospel? 1. Guarding is a word probably in the family of the same word for clan or tribe 2. It has the idea of protection and familial loyalty 3. It is often a word used of protection of people or things. 4. But it is used in the Pastoral Epistles mostly to reference the protection of the Christian faith. The gospel itself. Not just doctrinal purity but also its practical effect. vi. Therefore the idea that Timothy must continue to care for his flock by protecting the gospel are linked. vii. But Paul continues this thought of protection. b. [Slide 10] Avoiding irreverent and empty speech and contradictions from what is falsely called knowledge i. Avoiding here is a verbal word called a participle. ii. Participles describe a verbal concept while maintaining nounish aspects. iii. Here it leans a little more toward the verb side, describing something that Timothy is to be doing. But it also contributes to who he is as a person too. iv. In other words, this word is saying he should adopt the avoiding habit… v. In fact, when a participle is joined with a verb that is a command in the sentence, sometimes it inherits the force of that command. Indeed, that is what is happening here. This is a command to be avoiding. vi. To the extent that avoiding contributes to the command for guarding the gospel. vii. But what is he to be an avoider of? viii. Irreverent and empty speech – The CSB actually does a great job communicating what is happening here. Timothy can guard the gospel in avoiding speech that either does not put God in His proper place, or does not contribute to anything helpful. ix. The participle avoiding also has an element to it that means it is done to yourself or by yourself. That being said, it seems more likely that Paul is telling Timothy to avoid speaking in this way rather than avoid those who speak in this way. x. And indeed it must be that Timothy avoid their error and not the people teaching it – because Paul’s command from the beginning is to instruct and call these people to repentance. xi. Second, what Timothy is avoiding for himself, is contradictions from what is falsely called knowledge. xii. Again, the CSB nails this. The word for contradiction is where we get our word antithetical from. It means something that is counter to something else, or something that stands in opposition. xiii. And so, Timothy is to be an avoider of knowledge that contradicts what the gospel reveals. Both explicitly and implicitly. xiv. Meaning not only knowledge that overtly crafts a new messiah, God, or gospel… but also covertly applies the gospel to mean something it doesn’t. xv. In this, Paul is essentially telling Timothy to guard the gospel and avoid the failures of the false teachers. Because this is exactly what they did. xvi. Why? What if he doesn’t? He need look no further than the false teachers themselves. c. [Slide 11] 21 – By professing it, some people have departed from the faith. i. So in the process of preaching this irreverent, empty, contradictory message that is based on a knowledge that isn’t actually knowledge… ii. They have wandered from the narrow path and have found themselves on the broad road. iii. This again points us not necessarily to Timothy guarding his flock, but rather guarding the truth of the gospel itself. iv. There are eternal consequences for disobeying this command from Paul. v. And they are on display there in Ephesus. d. [Slide 12] Passage Truth: So Paul, in one final exhortation, pleads with Timothy to recognize the situation of the false teachers. They have wandered from the truth. So how can he not be like them? e. Passage Application: Timothy must guard the gospel, avoiding the pitfalls of the false teachers, and persevering in truth. f. [Slide 13] Broader Biblical Truth: If we zoom out from I Timothy to the rest of scripture it is easy to see that this theme is often repeated. Jesus warned of the broad path that leads to destruction. He also predicted that many will call Him lord but will not submit to His law. Hebrews warns of falling away. And the New Testament is full of warnings against apostasy. g. Broader Biblical Application: How do we avoid that? We continue to hold fast, and guard the truth. It is very simple. Yet it is not easy. We are fickle creatures and always pant after what is new. To cling to what is old, is what God has commanded His children to do. His Word, His truth. His gospel. We must persevere. Transition: [Slide 14 (blank)] But how can we do this? Just with grit and stamina? How can we guard this gospel and avoid false teachings? Are we really all alone? II.) Because people who stray from the gospel leave the faith, we must depend on God’s grace. (21b) a. [Slide 15] 21 – Grace i. A word that we often skip over because we think we understand it. ii. Unmerited favor right? iii. Yes… but so much more. iv. We’ve talked about this before so by way of review let me quickly cover the word. v. This word has always been associated with the gods. It is a word that the Greeks would use to describe an act of intervention from the gods. Some act of favor to push, pull, or otherwise rescue them from a situation in which they were unable to help themselves. vi. The word was used to describe a ship having lost the wind and stranded at sea with no hope, when suddenly the sails would fill, pushing them toward their intended destination. A favorable and divine wind. vii. That is grace. viii. The writer of Hebrews tells us, with the picture of coming into the holy of holies, in the very presence of our God, that we can come boldly and seek mercy and find GRACE for HELP in a time of NEED. ix. God’s grace is His supernatural push, pull, lift to do what we cannot do on our own. x. Now think back to all Paul has asked of Timothy. All that he has asked of the church there in Ephesus. Do you think they need a culture shift? Do you think they need some course correction? How well do you think it is going to go to suppress these false teachers? Do you think that the women in teaching positions are going to step down quietly? Do you think that widows who are unfit for support will be excited about losing their check from the church? Do you think that the unqualified Elders and Deacons are going to be excited about losing their office? Do you think people will naturally desire to pray for their ungodly emperor? What about slaves being told to submit to their masters? xi. Do you think… that this church needs God’s grace? xii. Paul does too… b. [Slide 16] Be with you all i. Paul’s prayer. His desire. His hope… is that God would give them His power and His passion to help them do all that he has asked. And more. ii. As catastrophic as false teachers are and as imperative as it is for Timothy to guard the gospel… it is all for nothing without God’s grace. c. [Slide 17] Passage Truth: Once again, this is in the context of the entire letter, that Paul is warning about the falling away of these false teachers. So how does Timothy prevent that from happening to him? d. Passage Application: Timothy must rely on the grace of God to preserve him. e. [Slide 18] Broader Biblical Truth: Sheep and goats, children of the serpent and children of the woman. The Family of God and the Sons of disobedience. There are two families. One is far bigger than the other. Worse, many who look as though they are part of God’s family, are actually not. How can we be sure that won’t be us? How can we be sure that we won’t fall prey to lies? f. Broader Biblical Application: Grace. Grace. God’s Grace. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Grace that is greater than all my sin. Friends, God’s grace is His supernatural aid to do what He asks of us. Without it – we would not move at all. But with it – we cannot help but move. Certainly, there is a human element in this. We have commands to obey. But without God’s grace, it isn’t that we wouldn’t obey, or that we’d have a hard time obeying, it is that we COULD NOT obey. Conclusion: In concluding this passage, we must really only think on one thing here at CBC. The glorious beauty, power, majesty, glory, and wonder of the gospel of Christ. It is why we are here. It is how we have been remade. It is the truth that changed us from sinner to saint. And without it all of us would still be dead in our sin. God’s grace woke us from death. God’s grace gave us eyes to see the truth. God’s grace gave us faith to believe. And we believed. And now, we must continue to believe. We must not grow tired of the things we have heard. We must not grow anxious to try to reframe, recraft, reforge, or redefine our message. It is the same as it always has been. God is our only hope in life and death. Our purpose is to glorify Him. And He has made a way to glorify Him and still live. There is hope in His Son. Hope for forgiveness and freedom from sin and death. Any message that takes from or adds to this message has potential to knock us off track. We must guard this gospel. And in order to guard it, we need God’s continued supply of grace. Book Conclusion: But what about I Timothy as a whole? What is the message here? I think there are a few absolute statements we can walk away with from this letter to Timothy. 1.) [Slide 19] The gospel is the starting point for God’s people to build upon. It is not the finish line. a. What I mean by that, is that the gospel is not simply a message of how to get saved… b. Rather the gospel is the good news of God’s life changing grace through faith in Christ. c. That is a message that converts, but it also sanctifies, and glorifies. It is a message that doesn’t speak to the past but rather to the Eschatological future. We are saved from what? The wrath of God that is to come. The Great and Terrible Day of the Lord. When all of sin and death is cast into the lake of fire. d. So the gospel is the beginning, the foundation of the Christian’s existence. Therefore, it is continually preached to the converted… why? Because they are still being saved. They need the gospel’s truth. Even now. That they were wicked and depraved and God rescued them when they were not seeking. He brought them to life from the dead, and gave them faith to believe. e. It is the normal Christian existence to continue to be given grace and faith and love and peace by God. So they may walk in His ways. f. Therefore, when we talk about holding fast to the gospel – it is not simply adhering to certain truths, although that is part of it. g. Rather it is clinging to those truths as our foundation for all we think, say, and do. These truths of Christ continue to change everything about us. Day by day. 2.) The gospel forms and reforms who we are as individuals and as a church a. Right there in chapter 3 Paul says that he has written this to instruct them how to conduct themselves as the family of God. b. The gospel itself permeates the life of a true believer. To the extent that all that we do, say, and think is continually conformed to Christ. c. The gospel not only forms and reforms our lives as individuals, but it also forms and reforms the body of the church. How we operate, what we prioritize, how we organize, and how we care for one another. All of this is formed and reformed by the gospel. 3.) Anything other than the gospel must be suppressed a. Because the gospel is our foundation and has continued effect on us as believers, anything that takes from or adds to this gospel ought to be squashed. b. We aren’t talking about physical aggression. We aren’t talking about physical warfare. Rather we are talking about the war of worldview. Spiritual warfare. In another context Paul talks about casting down strongholds. c. This is the war we must wage. Aberrant, heterodox doctrines that do not conform to what we know the gospel to be, must be opposed, while instructing those who taught them in love. d. Certainly, there is a point at which a teacher of false gospels is to be removed or forcefully amputated from the body. But it doesn’t start there. It starts with loving and patient correction and instruction. Opposing the error while instructing the person. e. But make no mistake – if a person insists on believing something that is not the gospel, the body of Christ chooses the gospel over people… every time. f. Why? g. Because the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. [Slide 20 (end)] Therefore, this book, although called a pastoral epistle, really, is an Ecclesiastical Epistle. It gives us every single local church within the universal church the foundational principles of what it means to be the body of Christ. Which is to be and continue to be gospel formed people. We have short pithy statements we hang on the wall in our homes, which essentially encompass three things. “Eat, Pray, Love” or “Live, Love, Laugh” or “Faith, love, hope” something like that. The message of I Timothy is a message for every church summarized in 3 words. We could hang them on the wall of every church. Preach the gospel, Guard the gospel, Live the gospel. That, in a nutshell, is the focus of the church. In regard to the gospel – Preach, Guard, Live. How do we make sure that that is our focus here at CBC? First, we continue to preach God’s word. The gospel is on every page of this book. Every page speaks to the depravity of man, the holiness of God, the work of the Son, the Spirit’s power to help us to obey, and the coming of the kingdom. This is the gospel. And if we do not abandon the sound teaching and preaching of the Word of God - we will be far less likely to lose focus. Second, we must continue to call out aberrant doctrine. Doctrine that fundamentally corrupts the truth and power of the gospel. Since we are preaching the Word, we will notice the glaring inconsistencies of these teachings as we understand what God has revealed. Gospels that either tell us that Christ’s sacrifice did not pay for all our sin, and we must earn more forgiveness. Or Gospels that say we need not live for God if we have been forgiven. Both of these are perversions of the truth. Lastly, we must not simply be people who know what the book says, but we must live it. And as gospel formed people… we will. We have that guarantee. We will. This means confessing sin to each other, teaching each other, counseling each other, correcting each other, rebuking each other, loving each other, serving each other. We must be gospel formed people. May we endeavor to be this here at CBC. Until the Lord returns. What great comfort it is to know, that we who are God’s people, have grace from Him to do this. May God’s grace be with us as we Preach, Guard, and Live His gospel. Amen.

“Single Release” Monday! Up early to get some pulled park smoking on the grill. Could NOT get the flames to fall...even the coals were too hot. The rub was “off”, maybe the new brown sugar I'm trying to use...and the sauce is bitter-ish. Used the indirect flame method and still the bark did not caramelize, IT BURNED! Trying to rescue with a real slow and low in the oven at 190! First time I've EVER had these issues on this grill...though, the hickory wood I used is a new brand to me, but hell, are not wood chunks...wood chunks? Jake and Austin Deraaff are twin brothers based out of the “big apple.” After 24 long months of college, they knew this “traditional route” wasn't the best option for them. After calling it quits and dropping out of school, they found an online course on how to make money in real estate with no money down. After being told by every friend, family and colleague that they COULD NOT do it, they took a leap of faith and committed. After seven long months of NOT closing a deal, they finally made their first wholesale. That changed their lives and gave them proof of concept and the permission to take massive action into the real estate space. Shortly afterwards, they did three more and then soon became close to 30. To date, the brothers have flipped and wholesaled around 60+ homes. Some of their flips have been promoted by local magazines. Their goal is to own 250+ units by February 2021. Their mission to help people build wealth through real estate investing and give their partners safe and secure returns. What you'll learn about in this episode: How the brothers focus on single-family residential properties in the range of $450,000-600,000 in the city, with an average profit of $35,000 per deal How their team is structured, how many rehab properties they've done, and the average profit per rehab How the brothers have relocated their business to a physical office, and what they have planned for further expansion of their business How hiring and delegating work to employees has been critical for their growth in 2020, and how the team will continue to expand going forward How Jake and Austin find their investment deals through many different lead generation streams Why taking massive action was critical for their success, and why their first year was their greatest challenge What big mistakes the brothers made when starting out, and how they course corrected and began to see success What challenges the brothers face operating in the competitive and challenging market of New York City What surprising impact the outbreak of the global pandemic has had on Jake and Austin's investing business Resources: Website: https://www.raven3.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/raven3-home-buyers/ Jake's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jake-deraaff-b05b46108/ Austin's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/austinderaaff/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Raven3HomeBuyers/ Additional resources: Website: www.TheMentorPodcast.com Website: www.ConnectWithTheMentor.com Get Ron's $599 Wholesaling course for FREE when you join his Gold Club for ONLY $59 a month! – https://thementorpodcast.com/GC87 Register for Ron's Upcoming Events: Website: www.TheMentorPodcast.com/events Or Call: (888) 563-7214

Bible Question & Answer

July 12, 2020 PM, Various.1. What exactly was the temptation Christ faced in the first temptation with turning stones to bread. He did make bread in another miracle (feeding of the 5000), so what would have been wrong about making bread this time? The answer hinges on the notion that the context of making bread was wrong--not that making bread itself is wrong. If Jesus made the bread to satisfy his own hunger, that would be in response to a challenge from the devil to provide his own sustenance instead of relying upon sustenance from the Lord. It would be a violation of trust in the Lord when there was a higher need, that of sustenance, that is, Gods' word. We examined John 4:31-34 and saw a similar point that the Lord found his greatest sustenance in doing the will of the Father. He did not fall into the temptation of Eve in the garden--that of the lust of the flesh (to satisfy hunger in this spectacular way), the pride of life, and the lust of the eyes. Since the Lord's answer was that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, we know, if for no other reason than by "reverse engineering," that the temptation had to do with trusting in self rather than in God; that the true need of the human person is not physical food but spiritual. The devil was trying to get Jesus to fall by focusing on and solving a very dire physical need without trusting fully in God. We looked at the other two temptations and saw how they were clearly sins as well. 2. How do Christians handle current political events and the like? How are we to be involved in social change (voting rights for women, for example). The questioner avoided reference to the specifics of the current events surrounding protests, riots, race issues, and the like. The question was designed to be general in nature. This is a very abbreviated form of the question, but the answer I gave has to do with the two realms of authority in which we find ourselves--church and state. The church has its realm, and the state has its own realm. These two do touch and overlap to some extent, but our responsibilities to them are distinguishable. In the church we are to participate in the Great Commission assignment that God has given the church. In our role as individual citizens in the state, we are to be good citizens, and do what we can to promote the well-being of the civil society. Each of us can decide with our own talents and resources what part(s) we might play in that. 3. A question on Matthew 19 regarding why divorce was allowed. Was it allowed for weakness in the people? Are there similar issues where Christians can support the legalization of things like gay marriage? Divorce was "legalized" to manage the sinfulness of society. Since God knew it would occur because of the hardness of heart of the people, He saw it wise to regulate its practice so that there would not be total anarchy in the area of marriage. Similar areas today might include the legalization of some drugs, and a fairly lengthy explanation ensued on that topic. The issue of gay marriage and how it was handled in law was a non-issue for centuries in our own country, and that was very workable since such a small portion of the population was ever interested in such a thing. There is no such thing as "gay" marriage anyway, because it is not a "thing" that can produce children. From a Christian perspective it is unnecessary that it had to change in recent years. Abortion is another example, where I cannot see any case for legalizing it--it is murder. We did not discuss the area of so-called victimless crimes, if it can be truly said there are such things. Along the same line of thought, another questioner asked, "Does government have a significant interest in marriage that it can legislate it?" My reply was that yes, the government does have a significant interest in the propagation of the race and continuance of the society. I would add that it has a welfare interest in that it should want children to have stable homes and not require government assistance. As to how much involvement it has, if it subsidizes marriage, and the like, these are questions that require much wisdom to answer and many facets will cause disunity on the exact right approach. 4. A question was raised about the impeccability of Christ. This doctrine is that Christ not only DID NOT sin, but he COULD NOT sin. The passage at issue is Matthew 26:53. The text says, "Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?" Could Christ have done this? Apparently so, in some kind of hypothetical way. Therefore (backing me into a corner) doesn't Matthew 26:53 teach that Christ COULD have sinned? This can be put in a simplified counterfactual way: "If Christ asked, God would send angels." The entire counterfactual is true, according to what Christ said. However, the "if" could never be true. It is a "possibility" that is actually a non-possibility because Christ never would have done it; never would have desired it; and knew it was not right in this context. Would calling the angels and halting the arrest have been a sin? I answered yes, as it would have short-circuited the plan of God for the suffering of Christ and the salvation of the world. He was of no desire to do that because He had set His face like flint to go to Jerusalem and to suffer for sinners to fill the plan of God. Did he do it? No, so therefore He did not sin. But could he have sinned? No. The text says that Christ as the divine Logos had the power to do something that in this particular context would not have been according to the will of God. But we cannot legitimately claim that just because Christ has the power to do an act that He therefore He could be somehow hypothetically convinced to actually do that act in a context in which it was sinful. Consider this further explanation. Christ could make bread out of stones (Matthew 4). That act itself is not a sin. The fact that Jesus COULD make the bread does not open him to the charge of peccability. This is because He not only DID NOT make the bread, but His nature would not allow Him to make the choice to make it in this context even though he could legitimately do so in another context. Stating the point again, the fact that Jesus possessed the power to do an act that is not sinful in itself does not mean that Christ was peccable. Not only would Christ have to be able to do the act, he would have to be able to CHOOSE to do that act. In this setting, He simply was not of a mind to halt the unfolding plan of salvation and could not be convinced otherwise. He was completely convinced of the need to do the will of the Father. Stated again, to break the doctrine of impeccability, you would have to prove NOT that Christ could in His divine office call angels to aid Him to avoid His appointed suffering, but that He could have a DESIRE to do that. Stating He has the power to do something does not undercut impeccability. Proving that He could have the DESIRE to do that thing is the decisive issue. In fact, Christ did make bread on other occasions, He could have made stones into sons of Abraham, and He will direct legions of angels to do His bidding in the eschaton--all without sin. Those would be legitimate exercises of His divine power in the right contexts. All the above considers actions that were not in and of themselves sinful, but could be turned into sin depending on the context in which they were done. Acts that are inherently sinful all the time (lying to an authority figure, committing idolatry, etc.) are things that Christ could not do because of His nature in any context. But they are similar to the above, because Jesus's physical body had the ability to do those things (bow down to Satan, for example, or speak words that would form a lie), but He had no desire to do so and could not have had such a desire. In the reverse, we sinful humans may or even may NOT have the power to do an act, but we can still sin by desiring to do the act whether we do it or not or have the power to do it or not. Christ had the power to do this particular act, but had no sin--even hypothetically--because He had no desire to do the thing and in fact could not have that desire. The doctrine of impeccability therefore stands. Our Scripture reading was found in 2 Kings 9:1-37.

Were sacrifices the way sin was forgiven in the Old Testament and the blood of Yeshua the way we receive sacrifices now? If so, how can the author of Hebrews claim that the blood of bulls and goats cannot (and therefore COULD NOT) take away sin? How does atonement really work and how does Yeshua fit into it? The answer may be surprising. Learn more in the 5 Minute Torah commentary on Parashat Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1-5:26).

Madlik Podcast – Torah Thoughts on Judaism From a Post-Orthodox Jew

The Audacity of Torah GS by Geoffrey Stern An exploration of the fine line between expressions of piety in the service of the Divine and the seduction of self-pride. Using biblical, Talmudic, liturgical and Maimonidian texts and anecdotes from the Novardok school of Mussar we come to a surprising conclusion. The Torah not so much commands us to worship the Lord as it does give us permission or license. We call this the audacity of Torah. ----- Link to Source Sheet on Sefaria here 1. There is a popular Jewish joke about the former Novardok Yeshiva, founded by Rabbi Yosef Yozel Horowitz known as the Alter of Novardok (1847–1919). Novardok was one of the more extreme exemplars of the mussar movement that developed in Lithuania in the latter part of the 19th century. This yeshiva placed great emphasis on “the negation of the ego and the physical world”. Students wore tattered clothing and engaged in deliberately humiliating activities to achieve that end. The joke goes as follows: Chaim, a new student, arrived at the Novardok Yeshiva. Being a novice and not knowing exactly what was expected of him, he simply observed what the other students were doing and copied them. When it was time for davening, observing his fellow yeshiva students engaged in fervent prayer and shokeling back and forth with great intensity, he did the same. During the period for Talmud study, he mimicked the others with their sing-song chants and exaggerated hand gestures. Finally, it was time for mussar self-examination, when each student retreated to a private corner, beat his fist remorsefully against his chest and repeated the refrain in Yiddish: “Ish bin a gor nisht! Ish bin a gor nisht!” (“I am a complete nothing!”) Observing the behaviour of these students, Chaim sat down and, pounding his fist against his chest, likewise repeated the same mantra: “Ish bin a gor nisht! Ish bin a gor nisht!” One of the veteran students seated nearby observed Chaim disdainfully, turned to another old-timer and commented, “Look at this one! He’s been here just one day, and he already thinks he’s a gor nisht!” source 2. Siddur Ashkenaz, Shabbat, Shacharit, Blessings of the Shema, First Blessing before Shema 8 the name of the Almighty, the king, the great, the mighty, the awesome One; holy is He. And they take upon themselves the yoke of sovereignty one from the other and give permission one to another to sanctify their Creator in a spirit of serenity with clear speech and sweet harmony They proclaim [His] holiness in unison and reverently proclaim: "Holy, holy, holy is Adonoy of Hosts the fullness of all the earth is his glory." 3. Rashi on Isaiah 6:3 They would take permission from one another so that one would not precede [the others] and be guilty of [a sin punishable by] burning; rather, they all commenced simultaneously. Rabbi Michael Gertz: Can Humans Resemble Angels 2/23/2020 Rabbi Chaim Ben Shlomo Tierer of Czernowitz (born 1816) explains the verse and prayer as follows: "… Because we have already written elsewhere that whoever loves God will not act selfishly under any circumstance, there is no difference in him at all in doing the commandments whether he did or others do and the good comes from everywhere. Ganze: There must be no "competition" for the observance. A Jew who does only one mitzvah a day does so pleasing the Almighty. And no one else has permission to criticize him that is only one mitzvah. And he continues: "And that is the crux of his work please the Lord, and what if this Divine pleasure comes from him or from his friend. ... Who loves his Creator A true love that longs for a spirit of Creator will never endeavor to snatch the mitzvah from others. Ganz; There is no guardianship of the commandments! One or the other circle must not claim that only they know how to keep the commandments, and therefore every commandment that another Jew makes is wrong in the first place. Such an attitude causes God sorrow instead of joy. Berakhot 32a And Rabbi Elazar said: Moses also spoke impertinently toward God on High, as it is stated in the verse following the sin of those who murmured against God in the desert: “And Moses prayed to the Lord and the fire subsided” (Numbers 11:2), and this verse is interpreted homiletically: Do not read to [el] the Lord, but rather onto [al] the Lord, which indicates that he spoke impertinently.... The Sages of the school of Rabbi Yannai, however, say proof that Moses spoke impertinently toward God on High is derived from here, Moses’ rebuke at the beginning of Deuteronomy: “And Di Zahav” (Deuteronomy 1:1). ...The Sages of the school of Rabbi Yannai said that Moses said the following before the Holy One, Blessed be He, to atone for Israel after the sin of the Golden Calf: Master of the Universe, because of the gold and silver that you lavished upon Israel during the exodus from Egypt until they said enough [dai]; it was this wealth that caused Israel to make the Golden Calf. ... Rabbi Oshaya said: This is comparable to a person who had a lean, but large-limbed cow. At one point, he fed it lupines, a choice food, and soon thereafter the cow was kicking him. He said to the cow: Who caused you to begin kicking me if not the lupines I fed you? Here, too, the sin was caused by an abundance of good. The Gemara offers another analogy: Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said that Rabbi Yoḥanan said: This is comparable to a person who had a son; he bathed him and anointed him with oil, fed him and gave him drink, and hung a purse of money around his neck. Then, he brought his son to the entrance of a brothel. What could the son do to avoid sinning? .... Rabbi Shmuel bar Naḥmani said that Rabbi Yonatan said: From where in the Torah is it derived that the Holy One, Blessed be He, ultimately conceded to Moses that the reason for the sin of the Golden Calf was indeed the riches lavished upon Israel? As it is stated: “And I gave them an abundance of silver and gold, which they used for the Ba’al” (Hosea 2:10). ... In an additional aspect of the sin of the Golden Calf, God told Moses: “Now leave Me be, that My wrath will be enraged against them and I will consume them; and I will make of you a great nation” (Exodus 32:10). Explaining this verse, Rabbi Abbahu said: Were the verse not written in this manner, it would be impossible to utter it, in deference to God. 5. 5.  Guide for the Perplexed, Part 1 59 It will now be clear to you, that every time you establish by proof the negation of a thing in reference to God, you become more perfect, while with every additional positive assertion you follow your imagination and recede from the true knowledge of God. ... Since it is a well-known fact that even that knowledge of God which is accessible to man cannot be attained except by negations, and that negations do not convey a true idea of the being to which they refer, all people, both of past and present generations, declared that God cannot be the object of human comprehension, that none but Himself comprehends what He is, and that our knowledge consists in knowing that we are unable truly to comprehend Him. All philosophers say, "He has overpowered us by His grace, and is invisible to us through the intensity of His light," like the sun which cannot be perceived by eyes which are too weak to bear its rays. Much more has been said on this topic, but it is useless to repeat it here. The idea is best expressed in the book of Psalms, "Silence is praise to Thee" (lxv. 2). It is a very expressive remark on this subject; for whatever we utter with the intention of extolling and of praising Him, contains something that cannot be applied to God, and includes derogatory expressions; it is therefore more becoming to be silent, and to be content with intellectual reflection, as has been recommended by men of the highest culture, in the words "Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still" (Ps. 4:4). You must surely know the following celebrated passage in the Talmud (Berakhot 33b) --would that all passages in the Talmud were like that!--although it is known to you, I quote it literally, as I wish to point out to you the ideas contained in it: "A certain person, reading prayers in the presence of Rabbi Haninah, said, 'God, the great, the valiant and the tremendous, the powerful, the strong, and the mighty.'--The rabbi said to him, Have you finished all the praises of your Master? The three epithets, 'God, the great, the valiant and the tremendous,' we should not have applied to God, had Moses not mentioned them in the Law, and had not the men of the Great Synagogue come forward subsequently and established their use in the prayer; and you say all this! Let this be illustrated by a parable. There was once an earthly king, possessing millions of gold coin; he was praised for owning millions of silver coin; was this not really dispraise to him?" Thus far the opinion of the pious rabbi. Consider, first, how repulsive and annoying the accumulation of all these positive attributes was to him; next, how he showed that, if we had only to follow our reason, we should never have composed these prayers, and we should not have uttered any of them. It has, however, become necessary to address men in words that should leave some idea in their minds, and, in accordance with the saying of our Sages, "The Torah speaks in the language of men," the Creator has been described to us in terms of our own perfections; but we should not on that account have uttered any other than the three above-mentioned attributes, and we should not have used them as names of God except when meeting with them in reading the Law. Solomon has already given us sufficient instruction on this subject by saying, "For God is in heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few" (Eccles. 5:2). 6. 6. Guide for the Perplexed, Part 3 32 a. It is, namely, impossible to go suddenly from one extreme to the other: it is therefore according to the nature of man impossible for him suddenly to discontinue everything to which he has been accustomed. Now God sent Moses to make [the Israelites] a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exod. 19:6) by means of the knowledge of God. Comp. "Unto thee it was showed that thou mightest know that the Lord is God (Deut. 4:35); "Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord is God" (ibid. 5:39). The Israelites were commanded to devote themselves to His service; comp. "and to serve him with all your heart" (ibid. 11:13); "and you shall serve the Lord your God" (Exod. 23:25); "and ye shall serve him" (Deut. 13:5). b. But the custom which was in those days general among all men, and the general mode of worship in which the Israelites were brought up, consisted in sacrificing animals in those temples which contained certain images, to bow down to those images, and to burn incense before them; religious and ascetic persons were in those days the persons that were devoted to the service in the temples erected to the stars, as has been explained by us. It was in accordance with the wisdom and plan of God, as displayed in the whole Creation, that He did not command us to give up and to discontinue all these manners of service; for to obey such a commandment it would have been contrary to the nature of man, who generally cleaves to that to which he is used; c. it would in those days have made the same impression as a prophet would make at present if he called us to the service of God and told us in His name, that we should not pray to Him, not fast, not seek His help in time of trouble; that we should serve Him in thought, and not by any action. For this reason God allowed these kinds of service to continue; He transferred to His service that which had formerly served as a worship of created beings, and of things imaginary and unreal, and commanded us to serve Him in the same manner; viz., to build unto Him a temple; comp. "And they shall make unto me a sanctuary" (Exod. 25:8); to have the altar erected to His name; comp. "An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me" (ibid. 20:21); to offer the sacrifices to Him; comp. "If any man of you bring an offering unto the Lord" (Lev. 1:2), to bow down to Him and to burn incense before Him. He has forbidden to do any of these things to any other being; comp. "He who sacrificeth unto any God, save the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed" (Exod. 22:19); "For thou shalt bow down to no other God" (ibid. 34:14). He selected priests for the service in the temple; comp. "And they shall minister unto me in the priest's office" (ibid. 28:41). He made it obligatory that certain gifts, called the gifts of the Levites and the priests, should be assigned to them for their maintenance while they are engaged in the service of the temple and its sacrifices. By this Divine plan it was effected that the traces of idolatry were blotted out, and the truly great principle of our faith, the Existence and Unity of God, was firmly established; this result was thus obtained without deterring or confusing the minds of the people by the abolition of the service to which they were accustomed and which alone was familiar to them. d. I know that you will at first thought reject this idea and find it strange; you will put the following question to me in your heart: How can we suppose that Divine commandments, prohibitions, and important acts, which are fully explained, and for which certain seasons are fixed, should not have been commanded for their own sake, but only for the sake of some other thing: as if they were only the means which He employed for His primary object? What prevented Him from making His primary object a direct commandment to us, and to give us the capacity of obeying it? Those precepts which in your opinion are only the means and not the object would then have been unnecessary. e. Hear my answer, which win cure your heart of this disease and will show you the truth of that which I have pointed out to you. There occurs in the Law a passage which contains exactly the same idea; it is the following: "God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt; but God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea," etc. (Exod. 13:17). Here God led the people about, away from the direct road which He originally intended, because He feared they might meet on that way with hardships too great for their ordinary strength; He took them by another road in order to obtain thereby His original object. In the same manner God refrained from prescribing what the people by their natural disposition would be incapable of obeying, and gave the above-mentioned commandments as a means of securing His chief object, viz., to spread a knowledge of Him [among the people], and to cause them to reject idolatry. It is contrary to man's nature that he should suddenly abandon all the different kinds of Divine service and the different customs in which he has been brought up, and which have been so general, that they were considered as a matter of course; it would be just as if a person trained to work as a slave with mortar and bricks, or similar things, should interrupt his work, clean his hands, and at once fight with real giants. It was the result of God's wisdom that the Israelites were led about in the wilderness till they acquired courage. f. For it is a well-known fact that travelling in the wilderness, and privation of bodily enjoyments, such as bathing, produce courage, whilst the reverse is the source of faint-heartedness: besides, another generation rose during the wanderings that had not been accustomed to degradation and slavery. All the travelling in the wilderness was regulated by Divine commands through Moses; comp. "At the commandment of the Lord they rested, and at the commandment of the Lord they journeyed; they kept the charge of the Lord and the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses" (Num. 9:23). In the same way the portion of the Law under discussion is the result of divine wisdom, according to which people are allowed to continue the kind of worship to which they have been accustomed, in order that they might acquire the true faith, which is the chief object [of God's commandments]. You ask, What could have prevented God from commanding us directly, that which is the chief object, and from giving us the capacity of obeying it? This would lead to a second question, What prevented God from leading the Israelites through the way of the land of the Philistines, and endowing them with strength for fighting? The leading about by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night would then not have been necessary. A third question would then be asked in reference to the good promised as reward for the keeping of the commandments, and the evil foretold as a punishment for sins. It is the following question: As it is the chief object and purpose of God that we should believe in the Law, and act according to that which is written therein, why has He not given us the capacity of continually believing in it, and following its guidance, instead of holding out to us reward for obedience, and punishment for disobedience, or of actually giving all the predicted reward and punishment? For [the promises and the threats] are but the means of leading to this chief object. What prevented Him from giving us, as part of our nature, the will to do that which He desires us to do, and to abandon the kind of worship which He rejects? There is one general answer to these three questions, and to all questions of the same character: it is this: Although in every one of the signs [related in Scripture] the natural property of some individual being is changed, the nature of man is never changed by God by way of miracle. It is in accordance with this important principle that God said, "O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me," etc. (Deut. 5:26). It is also for this reason that He distinctly stated the commandments and the prohibitions, the reward and the punishment. This principle as regards miracles has been frequently explained by us in our works: I do not say this because I believe that it is difficult for God to change the nature of every individual person; on the contrary, it is possible, and it is in His power, according to the principles taught in Scripture; but it has never been His will to do it, and it never will be. If it were part of His will to change [at His desire] the nature of any person, the mission of prophets and the giving of the Law would have been altogether superfluous. g. I now return to my theme. As the sacrificial service is not the primary object [of the commandments about sacrifice], whilst supplications, prayers, and similar kinds of worship are nearer to the primary object, and indispensable for obtaining it, a great difference was made in the Law between these two kinds of service. The one kind, which consists in offering sacrifices, although the sacrifices are offered to the name of God, has not been made obligatory for us to the same extent as it had been before. We were not commanded to sacrifice in every place, and in every time, or to build a temple in every place, or to permit any one who desires to become priest and to sacrifice. On the contrary, all this is prohibited unto us. Only one temple has been appointed, "in the place which the Lord shall choose" (Deut. 12:26); in no other place is it allowed to sacrifice: comp. "Take heed to thyself, that thou offer not thy burnt-offerings in every place that thou seest" (ibid. 5:13); and only the members of a particular family were allowed to officiate as priests. All these restrictions served to limit this kind of worship, and keep it within those bounds within which God did not think it necessary to abolish sacrificial service altogether. But prayer and supplication can be offered everywhere and by every person. The same is the case with the commandment of ẓiẓit (Num. 15:38); mezuzah (Deut. 6:9; 11:20); tefillin (Exod. 13:9, 16); and similar kinds of divine service. (4) Because of this principle which I explained to you, the Prophets in their books are frequently found to rebuke their fellow-men for being over-zealous and exerting themselves too much in bringing sacrifices: the prophets thus distinctly declared that the object of the sacrifices is not very essential, and that God does not require them. Samuel therefore said, "Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord" (1 Sam. 15:22)? Isaiah exclaimed, "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord" (Isa. 1:11); Jeremiah declared: "For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offering or sacrifices. But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my, voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people" (Jer. 7:22, 23). This passage has been found difficult in the opinion of all those whose words I read or heard; they ask, How can Jeremiah say that God did not command us about burnt-offering and sacrifice, seeing so many precepts refer to sacrifice? The sense of the passage agrees with what I explained to you. Jeremiah says [in the name of God] the primary object of the precepts is this, Know me, and serve no other being; "I will be your God, and ye shall be my people" (Lev. 26:12). But the commandment that sacrifices shall be brought and that the temple shall be visited has for its object the success of that principle among you; and for its sake I have transferred these modes of worship to my name; idolatry shall thereby be utterly destroyed, and Jewish faith firmly established. You, however, have ignored this object, and taken hold of that which is only the means of obtaining it; you have doubted my existence, "ye have denied the Lord, and said he is not" (Jer. 5:12); ye served idols; "burnt incense unto Baal, and walked after other gods whom ye know not. And come and stand before me in this house" (ibid. 7:9-10); i.e., you do not go beyond attending the temple of the Lord, and offering sacrifices: but this is not the chief object.--I have another way of explaining this passage with exactly the same result. For it is distinctly stated in Scripture, and handed down by tradition, that the first commandments communicated to us did not include any law at an about burnt-offering and sacrifice. You must not see any difficulty in the Passover which was commanded in Egypt; there was a particular and evident reason for that, as will be explained by me (chap. xlvi.). Besides it was revealed in the land of Egypt; whilst the laws to which Jeremiah alludes in the above passage are those which were revealed after the departure from Egypt. For this reason it is distinctly added, "in the day that I brought them out from the land of Egypt." The first commandment after the departure from Egypt was given at Marah, in the following words, "If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments" (Exod. 15:26)." There he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them" (ibid. ver. 25). According to the true traditional explanation, Sabbath and civil laws were revealed at Marah: "statute" alludes to Sabbath, and "ordinance" to civil laws, which are the means of removing injustice. The chief object of the Law, as has been shown by us, is the teaching of truths; to which the truth of the creatio ex nihilo belongs. It is known that the object of the law of Sabbath is to confirm and to establish this principle, as we have shown in this treatise (Part. II. chap. xxxi.). In addition to the teaching of truths the Law aims at the removal of injustice from mankind. We have thus proved that the first laws do not refer to burnt-offering and sacrifice, which are of secondary importance. The same idea which is contained in the above passage from Jeremiah is also expressed in the Psalms, where the people are rebuked that they ignore the chief object, and make no distinction between chief and subsidiary lessons. The Psalmist says: "Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt-offerings, they have been continually before me. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds" (Ps. 50:29).--Wherever this subject is mentioned, this is its meaning. Consider it well, and reflect on it. ----------- Footnote on "If it Were Not a Written Verse it Could Not be Said /אלמלא מקרא כתוב אי אפשר לאמרו see משה הלברטל and Moshe Halbertal Tarbiẕ /תרביץ כרך סח‎, חוברת א‎ (תשרי-כסלו תשנ"ט), pp. 39-59 (21 pages) here Abstract The formula 'If it were not a written verse it could not bee said' is a sentence that introduces few statements in the Midrash. This rare formula serves as a conscious expression that something daring is about to be said, and that without the shield of a written verse it could not be said. The analysis of the occasions in which the 'If it were not' formula occurs is thus a key for our understanding of rabbinic religious sensitivities. The study of midrashim that are introduced with the formula yields the following conclusions: (1) in most cases the idea expressed by the midrash is actually not written in the verse in its straightforward meaning. The formula reveals therefore a circular nature: the interpreter creatively rereads the text, and then he states that if his interpretation weren't already in the text he would not have dared to offer his reading; (2) in answer to the problem what is considered daring in the Midrash the following pattern is manifested: most of the midrashim that are introduced by such formula represent God in anthropomorphic metaphors in which God's role is reversed and transformed. Anthropomorphic metaphors are usually drawn from hierarchical human structures, such as king and slaves, father and son, husband and wife, etc. God is always represented as the figure which is superior in the analogous social relationship; He is the husband, the king, the father, and so on. In midrashim that are introduced by the formula 'If it were not', God is represented as the inferior partner in the analogy — he is a slave, a student, a wife and a defendant in a trial. In these metaphors or parables Israel or the righteous are represented as the superior figure. Another form in which hierarchical metaphors are reversed is exhibited in the Midrashim that use metaphors from non-hierarchical relationship such as friends and twins. The last part of the essay is devoted to uncover the same pattern in other midrashim that are not introduced by the 'If it were not' formula, and to a discussion of the significance of this phenomenon in rabbinic religious thought.   Hello and welcome to Film Pro Productivity, the podcast that helps film professionals and other creatives to live a more focused, effective and HAPPY life. My name is Carter Ferguson and this is EPISODE 40 – THE LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS: PART 1   That was Napoleon Hill speaking there in 1954 and during the next six episodes I will be introducing you to the concepts and principles which he first presented in his very powerful book THE LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS – It’s the book that his more well-known work Think and Grow Rich was based on as well as many many other self-help books and concepts which we find discussed in productivity circles today - And if you think you’ve got nothing to learn from something written nearly a hundred years ago, then think again. This is potent stuff.   Whilst still a young man Napoleon Hill met Andrew Carnegie a Scottish-American industrialist, business magnate, and philanthropist. Carnegie led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century and became one of the richest Americans in history. Andrew Carnegie is the third-wealthiest figure of the modern period (net worth of $310 billion). and came to understand that a formula for success could be outlined in simple lessons which anyone could understand.   He was commissioned by Carnegie to prove this statement and went on to spend twenty plus years of his life studying Carnegie and his associates to find this elusive formula.   During this time he was granted access to America's ELITE including the likes of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Theodore Roosevelt, John D Rockefeller and Henry Ford. At first, he compiled his notes into a series of lectures which were personally delivered across the USA over a period of about seven years. These were then compiled into booklets and finally the manuscripts became published as a single volume known as “THE LAW OF SUCCESS” in 1928 – That book was only distributed to 118 of the very wealthy and successful men who had contributed to its content and one of these original copies was used to create a reprinted version of The Law of Success in 2010. One thing I’d like to say though about WHEN this was written - and I mention this as I find it a little hard on the ear myself - is that in 1928 it was commonplace to use the term “men” or “man” when speaking generally about HUMANKIND where today more gender-neutral words or phrasings such “they” or “those” would work instead. I will often, but NOT ALWAYS NEUTRALISE THE GENDER put forth in the text, however - I DON’T DO THIS when QUOTING DIRECTLY from someone, which I do often, or where it isn’t factually accurate for me to neutralise gender. For example, when I said there that the book was “distributed to 118 of the very wealthy and successful MEN who had contributed to its content” it’s because it’s factually accurate. As far as I am aware, he neither interviewed not distributed this to women, but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing for all of us to learn from it. Hill was all about inclusion and I’m certain that if he wrote this book today he would have made this adaptation. He would have been horrified that his positive words somehow made any section of his readership uncomfortable or feel isolated. I say this as a kinda fair warning that on occasion you will hear these gender-specific words and they may jar a little, but bear with me if you are easily “triggered”, as these lessons in SUCCESS are accessible and relevant to all, and the BENEFITS you will gain from them will MORE THAN makeup FOR A FEW ANACHRONISTIC and GENDER SPECIFIC QUOTATIONS. With that point made, let’s move on. The Law of Success was effectively condensed version into THINK AND GROW RICH, which wasn’t released until 1937. Rumour has it that this 9-year hiatus came about because the "authorities" felt that SUCH AN EXACT GUIDE TO SUCCESS, AS SEEN IN THE ORIGINAL, could be a threat to their roles in government and society. In THINK AND GROW RICH the concepts and ideas are diluted to make it shorter but it’s generally considered now that the real gold can be found in this -THE LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS.   Hill warns against PASSING JUDGMENT before having read the entire sixteen lessons. THOSE WHO TAKE UP THE COURSE WITH AN OPEN MIND, he tells us, WILL BE RICHLY REWARDED – so bear with ME over the next 6 episodes, KEEP AN OPEN MIND AS I PROCEED, and you will get a glimpse of the vision which Napoleon Hill set forth in the 1100 or so pages that make up the LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS.   You cannot push any one up a ladder unless he is willing to climb a little by himself. Andrew Carnegie UNQUOTE   These shows are a kinda six-part “series within the series” – and organised so as to introduce you to the concepts within the book - ON THAT NOTE MANY YOU WILL LIKELY RECOGNISE TOPICS WHICH I’VE TACKLED IN EARLIER EPISODES as the rules and theories which Napoleon Hill introduces here are intrinsically part of what productivity has become.   It’s worth mentioning too, that throughout his lessons, Hill doesn’t hold back on giving examples and if anything, it is this that truly separates it in content from THINK AND GROW RICH.   In the 1950s Hill filmed a series of lectures based on this work. He’d had a few years to develop his ideas and there are a few nuggets of wisdom from that, which I will use here. The first of these was this:   He said that “Success is a very profound and interesting thing because the line of demarcation between success and failure is so slight that it is often hard to see where one ends and the other begins.”   For those of us struggling with the many failures and disappointments that come along in life and work, it’s worth noting that Hill’s words predict for us SUCCESS with a slight shifting of our outlook and our actions. I hope that this short series of episodes brings you the key to that success.   On a final note, I’m switching around lesson 2 and lesson 1 from the book because Napoleon Hill did so later in life himself and because to me it makes far more sense this way around.   In this chapter though, Hill first suggests we read with a pencil and pad to hand as the lessons will “superinduce a flow of thoughts covering a wide range of subjects”. I realise that many who listen to podcasts are doing other things as they do so, driving, walking the dog or whatever, but if you can, I’d try and take a bit of a breather between the lessons in case I too, accidentally superinduce your FLOW OF THOUGHTS too much and you have a meltdown.   Without further ado, hang onto your seats and let’s look at THE LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS.   WHATEVER THE MIND CAN CONCEIVE AND BELIEVE THE MIND CAN ACHIEVE Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement. Without a purpose and a plan, people drift aimlessly through life. Napoleon Hill Unquote LESSON 2 in The LAW OF SUCCESS is titled A DEFINITE CHIEF AIM: and here Hill states that “This lesson will show you how to do away forever - with aimlessness - and fix your heart and hand upon some definite, well-conceived purpose.” It is important that you recognize that all success begins with definiteness of purpose - with a clear picture in your mind of precisely what you want from life. Hill warns us NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF THIS IDEA DUE TO ITS SIMPLICITY. There is no greatness where there is no simplicity, goodness and truth. Leo Tolstoy unquote It’ll come as no surprise to listeners to this show that what we need to do is to set an objective and a time frame before we can achieve it, and that’s as true for a small task as it is for a life goal. I talk about this often as WITHOUT HAVING A SOLID AIM TO FOCUS ON YOU CANNOT EFFECTIVELY, EFFICIENTLY, AND AS DIRECTLY AS POSSIBLE, ACHIEVE IT. Hill’s specific instruction in regard to this lesson 2 - A DEFINITE CHIEF AIM is to “procure a neat pocket size a notebook” · and on page 1 write down a clear description of your major aim in life - the one circumstance or position or thing which you will be willing to accept as your idea of success - and remember before you begin writing that your only limitations are those which you set up in your own mind or which others to set up for you. Please be the master of your own destiny, and try not to allow yourself to be side lined into achieving someone else’s desires in place of your own. · On page 2 Hill asks us to write down a clear statement of precisely what you intend to GIVE IN RETURN for that which you desire from life. Hill firmly believes that there is NO SUCH THING AS SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. · Thirdly he asks you to memorize both of your statements WHAT YOU DESIRE AND WHAT YOU INTEND TO GIVE IN RETURN FOR IT and to repeat them at least a dozen times daily.” Humility leads to strength and not to weakness. It is the highest form of self-respect to admit mistakes and to make amends for them. John J. McCloy UNQUOTE Lesson 2 covers a lot of ground, not least of which is the time he spends on the importance of HUMILITY, which he describes as the FORERUNNER TO SUCCESS – but what Hill also gets into in this lesson is POWER. “Success is the development of the POWER with which to get whatever one wants in life without interfering with the rights of others.” To Hill, POWER is ORGANIZED ENERGY or EFFORT and his book is called the Law of Success as it teaches how we may organize facts and knowledge and the faculties of our mind, into a unit of power. THIS POWER, HE SAYS, BRINGS YOU A DEFINITE PROMISE: That through its mastery and application you can get whatever you want, with but two qualifying words - "WITHIN REASON."   This is a point on which I’ve hung my hat in the past, In episode 28 - YOU HAVE THE POWER I say BE CONFIDENT BUT NOT DELUSIONAL and when Hill says "You Can Do It if You Believe You Can!" he doesn’t mean you can become Harry Potter or ride a unicorn. It’s the sort of thing that you’d think doesn’t need to be voiced, but in my experience there are those out there that keep themselves back from success because they cannot recognise that they are in some way the problem, and it is they that keep themselves in check. No man has a chance to enjoy permanent success until he begins to look in a mirror for the real cause of all his mistakes. Napoleon Hill Unquote In the next lesson, we will look at how you can organize the faculties of your mind and the faculties of others, to co-ordinate and focus on your DEFINITE CHIEF AIM. The key-note of this entire lesson may be found in the word "definite." That any DEFINITE CHIEF AIM that is deliberately fixed in the mind and held there, with the determination to realize it, finally saturates the entire subconscious mind until it automatically influences your physical action toward the achievement of that purpose.   Your DEFINITE CHIEF AIM in life should be selected with deliberate care, and after it has been selected it should be written out as outlined before and placed where you will see it AT LEAST ONCE A DAY - I HAVE MY AIMS WRITTEN ON MY OFFICE WALL for example and ON THE WHITEBOARDS which I use every day. The psychological effect of this is to impress this purpose upon your SUBCONSCIOUS mind so strongly that IT ACCEPTS THAT PURPOSE AS A PATTERN OR BLUEPRINT that will eventually DOMINATE YOUR ACTIVITIES IN LIFE and lead you, step by step, TOWARD THE ATTAINMENT OF THAT THAT AIM. Hill says “Suppose your definite chief aim is far above your present station in life. What of it? It is your privilege - nay, your DUTY, to aim high in life.” It’s now that I get to the start of 16 lessons, but before I do, I want you to really consider what has been proposed here in this one. Don’t just let it pass and move on, pause the show if you have to and really consider what has been said. IF YOU HAVE TO SPEND A FEW DAYS OR WEEKS CONSIDERING HOW SETTING YOURSELF A CONTRACT TO ACHIEVE A DEFINITE CHIEF AIM, COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE THEN DO IT. Thomas Jefferson SAID Nothing can stop the someone with the RIGHT MENTAL ATTITUDE from achieving his goal; and NOTHING ON EARTH CAN HELP THE MAN (or woman) with the WRONG MENTAL ATTITUDE.   WHATEVER THE MIND CAN CONCEIVE AND BELIEVE THE MIND CAN ACHIEVE   LESSON 1 - THE MASTER MIND: Hill discusses many things in this first lesson as he prepares and primes the reader for what is to come. He talks about how to STIMULATE YOUR IMAGINATION so that it will create PRACTICAL PLANS and NEW IDEAS, and how ORGANIZED EFFORT, IS THE SOURCE OF ALL POWER! Don’t skip passed this statement either – TAKE HEED AND CONSIDER THE WORDS - ORGANISED EFFORT IS THE SOURCE OF ALL POWER. If we set our minds to it, and can intelligently coordinate the efforts of the many, WORKING IN HARMONY, we can achieve truly great things. This isn’t a throwaway statement either. He really means it.   This is the principle through which you may borrow and use the education, the experience, the influence and perhaps the capital of other people in CARRYING OUT YOUR OWN PLANS IN LIFE.   It is the principle through which you can accomplish in one year more than you could accomplish without it in a lifetime if you depended entirely upon your own efforts for success. Hill explains that the MASTERMIND PRINCIPLE can also give you absolute protection against failure provided that your purpose is in using this principle is BENEFICIAL TO ALL WHOM YOU INFLUENCE.   Hill explains that the "Master Mind" is an invisible STRONGER third mind which is developed by a friendly alliance, in a spirit of harmony of purpose, between two or more minds.   I’ll say it again - AN INVISIBLE STRONGER THIRD MIND WHICH IS DEVELOPED BY A FRIENDLY ALLIANCE, IN A SPIRIT OF HARMONY OF PURPOSE, BETWEEN TWO OR MORE MINDS.   He clarifies too that NO TWO OR MORE MINDS EVER MET WITHOUT CREATING, out of the contact, ANOTHER MIND but warns us that this INVISIBLE creation is not always a "Master Mind.” as a MASTER MIND ONLY forms when those TWO OR MORE PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER IN HARMONY of purpose and effort.   I’ve seen many of the theories behind THE MASTER MIND discussed in productivity circles over the years and it’s one that is of great interest to me. It is based on the idiom that SUCCESS DOES NOT COME WITHOUT THE COOPERATION OF OTHERS - I haven’t thought about that particular concept very often but I’ve unconsciously been part of MASTER MIND groups at various points in my life and I’m very open to embracing it. I’ve had an awareness of it I think though, as I often think of Jim Rohn who famously said that “we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” In other words, if you spend a lot of time with a bunch of wasters, then you’re not going to be getting out of your rut anytime soon, and it’s highly likely you will become a bit of a waster yourself. If however you spend your time with high flyers you will follow most likely along that path too.   When discussing of THE MASTER MIND Hill says something similar to Rohn – He says “It has been found that a group of six or seven sales people may use the law so effectively that their sales may be increased to unbelievable proportions.” He adds the caveat though that “It is strictly for minds who trust each other and are interested in the good success of all parties involved.” In my experience, it is with those final words that I have seen many a MASTER MIND destroyed by selfishness and EGO.   On that note Hill advises that you “Control your mental attitude and make yourself friendly and agreeable with everyone with whom you are closely associated if you expect friendly cooperation in return. Indifference cannot create a mastermind alliance, and a negative mental attitude can bring you nothing but failure. Your mental attitude is the one and the only thing over which you have complete control.   Whilst researching this book, he reminds us, I had the collaboration of practically every outstanding successful man this country has produced during the past 50 years and I can tell you DEFINITELY that their success was due in main to their knowledge and application of the MASTERMIND principle.   Henry Ford's gigantic success may be traced to the successful application of this MASTER MIND principle, he says “With all the self-reliance a man could have, Ford, did not depend upon himself for the knowledge necessary in the successful development of his industries. He surrounded himself with men who supplied the knowledge which he, himself, DID NOT and COULD NOT possess. Moreover, Ford picked men who COULD AND DID HARMONIZE IN GROUP EFFORT.” – Hill talks elsewhere of how FORD’s true mastermind alliance was with HIS WIFE who supported and encouraged him.   In this chapter Hill also looks at WHY PEOPLE FAIL and WHY SOME PEOPLE ANTAGONIZE OTHERS WITHOUT KNOWING IT, and how SUCCESS is often a matter of TACTFUL NEGOTIATION. He also explains that EVERY HUMAN BEING possesses at least two distinct personalities; one destructive and one constructive. My default is self-destruction, and anything on top of that is a bloody lot of work. Gillian Anderson UNQUOTE Summing Up   The master mind is a simple enough thing to understand, although like many other concepts it is harder to put into practice. I’m going to end this episode here but over the next five episodes I will dip into each of the remaining lessons. These lessons are constantly relating to one another and I’ll refer back to these first two many times. In summary today though:   Lesson 2 states that you must do away forever with aimlessness and fix your heart and hand upon some definite, well-conceived purpose. In your struggle for SUCCESS you should keep constantly in mind the necessity of knowing what it is that you want - Know precisely what your definite purpose is – and utilise the principle of organized effort in the attainment of that DEFINITE PURPOSE.   …and Lesson 1 encourages to form A "Master Mind" - an invisible stronger third mind, developed through friendly alliance, in a spirit of harmony of purpose, between two or more minds. No two or more minds ever met without creating, out of the contact, another mind, but that this invisible creation is not always a "Master Mind." That ONLY forms when those two or more people work together in harmony of purpose and effort. Please consider the theory of THE MASTER MIND ALLIANCE. How can you create a harmonious master mind group that will further your purpose. I’m pretty sure I’ll be looking into this further in a future episode.   Call To Action If you haven’t done so already, then you need to start putting serious time into rediscovering your one chief aim. Consider it, focus on it, and move on with purpose.   Hill actually gives a CALL TO ACTION WITHIN THESE CHAPTERS. He reminds us that there is no such thing as something for nothing. Everything including your personal success has a price that must be paid and the only price you are requested to pay for the present is the effort necessary to do three simple things:   1. Decide definitely where you wish to be in what you wish to be doing during the next three years. 2. Decide how much money you desire to be making and what you are going to do to earn it. 3. Form a mastermind alliance with at least one person (he suggests in your immediate family although these days I’d advise caution on that front) and at least one other person among those to whom you are selling your services.   Gary Keller said “Success demands singleness of purpose. You need to be doing fewer things for more effect instead of doing more things with side effects. It is those who concentrate on but one thing at a time who advance in this world.” In the next episode I’ll be firing straight into several more of Napoleon Hill’s Law Of Success lessons. If you are listening to these back to back though, I’d suggest giving yourself a bit of a breather between them as there’s some big topics here. Words Mean Nothing Without Actions #IYP We have all heard the saying "Talk is Cheap" and for those who listen to the daily show you have also heard me say over and over again that there is a change upon us energetically. Well, on today's show these 2 worlds collide, yup a situation arises that takes me to the edge and I have to go with what is in my heart with all these new changes and energies. So the story begins almost 7 years ago when I first started putting my time into (and by time I mean my heart and knowledge to help empower and help heal) into this person. So this beautiful women and amazing person was at that time going through a very difficult time with relationships and her work life. So there was massive weight gain and some slight depression as far as moving on with her life in a positive way. You have also heard the saying "Fool me once it's on you, fool me twice it's on me," well this is in the end how it all played out for me except it was fool me 10 plus times. So because she was in such a bad place, she had such low expectations and self worth, I understood that it would not be an over night process. At the same time I had no clue she was not really looking to improve but rather to be able to use her issues as an excuse as to why she COULD NOT do it. So every time this (the falling off the wagon) happened it sorta took the wind out of my sail's, as I was so invested in her and myself. I was not only trying to learn more for her to help but I was also helping myself improve and gain massive knowledge so sort of a win win really...for a while right?? Then the last few years what happened was just weird things like not a word for 7 plus months, then when I did get a call it was this uber high she was on about how good she was doing and how good everything was...then nothing for months again. Then the next call was a super low again and how this and that was the reason for it. So a couple years of this really taught me a lot about myself not so much her. Up until this meeting last night...I was blown away with myself not her. It was the same old same old on her behalf, but it was my response and UNDERSTANDING of myself not anyone else that allowed me to make an empowered decision of improvement and self realization of how important our time is and the energy we surround ourselves with is and how we need to get on with what it is we want!! I’m the founder and CEO of Sensible Money, a fee-only financial planning firm. I’m also the author of Control Your Retirement Destiny, a book that covers all the decisions you need to make as you plan for a transition into retirement. This podcast covers the material in Chapter 7, on company benefits. If you like what you hear today, go to Amazon and search for Control Your Retirement Destiny. Or, if you are looking for a customized financial plan, visit sensiblemoney.com to see how we can help. Let’s take a look at company benefits, and how you make the most of them. ————— Company benefits used to be simple. Our grandparents, and in some cases our parents, worked for the same company for 25 or 30 years and retired with a gold watch and a pension. Today, instead of pensions, most people have 401(k) plans. Now, you must decide how to invest your money, and when to take it out. In addition, you may have deferred compensation plans, stock options and various insurance benefits – ALL of which require you to make decisions. Company benefits are far more complex than they used to be. There are too many benefit programs out there to cover them all. Today we’re going to focus on the most common benefit option – the 401(k) plan. The goal is to show you how to use this type of retirement plan in a way that BENEFITS you the most. There are four key things I want to cover:The creditor protection rules that apply to your 401(k).The age-related rules that impact when you can access your money and how it is taxed. How to pick investments in your 401(k).What to consider when you are deciding whether you should leave your funds in your 401(k) plan, or roll them over to an IRA. First, creditor rules. Your 401(k) assets cannot be touched by your creditors, even in the event of bankruptcy. Hopefully, you’ll never need these rules. But, let me share with you a few real-life situations and how these rules apply. Suppose you get a great business idea. You are 100% sure it will work out – but in order to get it going you need a little cash. “Hey,” you think, “I’ll just borrow it out of my 401(k) plan.” Or, maybe cash in the 401(k) account. Bad idea. If your business does not work out, your 401(k) money is gone. Instead of using 401(k) money for a start-up business, use credit cards, or a bank loan. If you use a bank loan, and your business doesn’t work out, the worst case is that you file for bankruptcy—your 401(k) assets would then remain protected and still available for your retirement. Another situation that many people found themselves facing in 2008 and 2009 was a job loss. After losing their job, they, of course, didn’t want to lose their home, so many cashed in their 401(k)s to continue making their mortgage payments. Unfortunately, many used up all their retirement funds and then lost their home anyway. Making objective decisions about one’s home can be difficult, but as difficult as it may be, you need to look at the long-term consequences of any financial decision. In a job loss situation, you may spend a substantial amount of retirement money trying to keep a home that you end up losing. One lady I spoke with said, “The stupidest thing I ever did was cash out my 401(k) plan to try to keep that house.” Your 401(k) money is for retirement. That’s it. Don’t use it for any other purpose—particularly if you are in financial trouble. Using your 401(k) money before retirement voids a valuable form of protection that is available to you. You know why pensions worked out so well for prior generations? Because they COULD NOT use them before retirement. You need to treat your 401(k) plan the same way. ————— Next, let’s talk about some of the odd age-related rules that apply to 401(k) plan withdrawals. While you continue to work for a company, most of the time you can’t withdraw money from that 401(k) plan. Some plans offer hardship withdrawals, some offer loans and sometimes there is something available called an in-service withdrawal if you are age 59 ½ or older – but most of the time while you are still working there – you can’t access the funds. But let’s say you change employers and now have money in a 401(k) plan from some place you previously worked. Then what can you do? Usually you have a few options:You can leave it there. You can roll it over to an IRA and there are no taxes when this is done correctly. You can roll it to a new 401(k) plan and there are no taxes when this is done right either. You can withdraw it and pay taxes and possibly penalties. Let’s talk about option 4, withdrawing it. That’s where the age-related rules come in. When you withdraw money from a 401(k) plan you are taxed on it. If you take money out of a 401(k) plan before you reach the age of 59 ½, in addition to regular taxes, a 10% early withdrawal penalty tax also applies. Here’s what many people don’t know. There’s an odd rule about the age of 55. Let’s say you leave your employer AFTER you reach the age of 55, but before age 59 ½. Even though you are not 59 ½ yet, you can now access the money in that old 401(k) plan without paying the early withdrawal penalty tax. This early access rule DOES NOT apply if you roll the funds to an IRA or to a new plan. It also DOES NOT apply if you leave that employer BEFORE you reach the age of 55. Here’s what you need to remember. If you leave an employer after you attain age 55, but before age 59 ½, don’t automatically move the funds to an IRA or to a new employer plan. If you want to preserve your ability to access the funds penalty-free, you’ll leave the funds, or at least a portion of them, in your prior plan. And, if you’re a public safety employee – this early access rule kicks in at age 50 instead of age 55! In general, a public safety employee includes firefighters, police, emergency medical service employees, as well as air traffic controllers and customs and border protection officers. The IRS has a comprehensive list that you can check to see if you qualify for this definition. When you move past the early-access age of 50 or 55, the next important age is 59 ½. Once you attain age 59 ½, the penalty tax on withdrawals goes away. Regular income taxes, however, still apply. And, keep in mind, a rollover or transfer, where you move money from one plan to another, or from a 401(k) to an IRA, does not trigger taxes. I talk to many people who think if they withdraw funds from a plan at all – even in the form of a rollover – that they will have to pay taxes and possibly penalties. A rollover or transfer is a special rule in the IRS code that allows you to move money from one retirement plan to another WITHOUT triggering the taxes or penalties. The last critical age is 70 ½. At this age the IRS requires you to begin withdrawing money from 401(k)s, from IRAs, and from other types of retirement plans. There is a formula you must use each year to calculate the required withdrawal. This formula uses your year-end balance, along with the divisor that is based on your age. Here’s an example: Lynn is retired and reaches age 70½. Her IRA balance on Dec 31st for the previous year is exactly $350,000. Based on her age, the divisor Lynn must use is 27.4. She takes the year-end balance of $350,000 and divides it by 27.4 to calculate the $12,773.72 that she must take out. When she takes it out she will pay taxes on that amount. The distribution period decreases every subsequent year. For example, when Lynn is 88 years old, she will divide her retirement account balance by 12.7 to determine how much she must withdraw. If her account balance is still $350,000 that would be $27,559 that she must take out. You can always withdraw more than the required amount, but if you withdraw less, you could be subject to a 50% excise tax on the amount you did not withdraw in time. Yikes – 50% is a hefty tax. You want to make sure you take your required distributions (RMD). One thing to keep in mind - with a required distribution the money has to come out of the IRA account, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend it. One option is you can distribute investments, shares of a mutual fund or a stock, for example, and just move them out of your IRA account, into your brokerage account. Since the money came out of the IRA, it satisfies the RMD, but the funds remain invested. Another option is to make a charitable distribution. There’s something called a Qualified Charitable Distribution or QCD. You can distribute funds right from your IRA to a charity. There are some tax benefits to this, and it’s beyond the scope of this podcast for me to go into all the details, but if you don’t need the money from your IRA, it’s something you might want to look into. But what do you do if you are still working at 70 ½? Well, if you are not a 5% owner of the company you work for, you may be able to delay your required minimum distributions from your current employer plan until April 1st of the year after you retire. In this situation you are still required to take distributions from other retirement plans, just not from the one from your current employer. Next, let’s talk about how to make better investment decisions in your 401(k). If you are like a lot of people, you collect investment accounts over time. Maybe a 401(k) at one place, but then you leave that employer and leave the 401(k) plan there. You might open an IRA a few years later while you’re self-employed. Then start another 401(k) at a new employer a few years after that. And if you’re married, your spouse may also have their own collection. Rarely is this collection of investments aligned toward a common goal. Instead, most people tend to pick investments in a rather random way. Some look at what has recently had the highest performance and pick that. Other people go with something that sounds familiar. Some ask a co-worker. And, some are more thoughtful and do a little bit of research. Even if you are the research type, do you look at your investment portfolio as a household, or do you look at each individual account on its own? Suppose, for example, that your 401(k) plan offers a great low-cost S&P 500 index fund, while your spouse’s 401(k) plan offers only high cost growth funds, but also has a safe option called a stable value fund? Or if your single, maybe it’s that you have one set of funds available in a 401(k) and other choices in your IRA. If you are investing as a household, rather than balance each account, you might load up on the S&P fund in one account, while using more of the stable value fund in the other account. Although each account is not balanced, as a household, it creates a structure that may result in a better long-term outcome. If married, age differences also come into play. What if one half is ten years younger? It may make sense for the younger partner to have a more aggressive allocation, as it is the older of the two who will be the first to have to start taking required distributions. Whether single or married when you look at your investments at a household level, you can make choices that can lower the overall fees you pay, better align the investments to a specific outcome, and you can take advantage of options that may be available inside of one account but not in another. The last thing to talk about regarding 401(k)s is what to do when you leave your employer? Do you leave the funds there, or roll them to an IRA account or to a new plan? Most of the time, I think moving the funds is the best choice; however, first, let’s talk about three situations where moving the funds may NOT be the right thing to do. First, as we already discussed, if you leave your employer after you turned age 55 but before age 59½, if you move your 401(k) plan before age 59½ this will void your ability to access funds penalty-free. If you won’t need the money during that time, this won’t be relevant. But if there’s a chance you might need to take withdrawals, you may want to wait until age 59½ before you proceed with the rollover. Second, if your 401(k) plan offers a unique fixed income or guaranteed account option, that might warrant keeping funds in the plan. For example, some plans offer something called a guaranteed insurance contract (GIC) that pays an attractive fixed rate of return. Other plans, such as the options in the public education system through TIAA-CREF, offer a fixed account that usually pays a competitive rate. Some 401(k) plans offer stable value funds. All of these investment options are not easily replicated outside of the plan. If your plan offers these types of options, think twice before you roll it over. Third, don’t move funds out of an old 401(k) if you don’t know where to move the funds and don’t feel capable of making this decision right now. For example, maybe your 401(k) plan had something called a target date fund. The “target date” is a calendar year, and you pick a fund with a year that is closest to the year you think you might retire. So, if you will reach age 65 in the year 2035, you would pick a Target Date fund with the year closest to 2035. This type of fund automatically invests for you and makes changes to the investments as you get closer to the target year. For those who don’t know what else to do, I think these can be GREAT choices. So, if you don’t want to go through the process of finding a financial planner, and don’t want to do your own research, leaving the funds in a place where they can easily remain invested in a Target Date fund can be better than trying to guess about picking new investments - and it is much better than making a rushed decision and hiring the wrong kind of person to help. What if none of these three situations apply to you? Then my view is that rolling the old 401(k) to an IRA or to a new plan makes sense. Here’s why: First, it is a lot easier to keep track of. When it comes to address changes and beneficiary changes, you now have one less place where you have to do paperwork. Second, it is much easier to invest. When your accounts are scattered across old plans, next thing you know you get a notice from one plan or another that they are changing the 401(k) provider, or switching out one fund option for another. Each time this happens you have to realign your investment allocation. When you consolidate accounts, this process is easier to manage.Third, in an IRA, you have choices that are not available inside 401(k) plans, such as CDs and individual bonds. If you are building a customized portfolio designed to help your money last as long as possible, having this broader set of choices may help you build a better plan. And now, you are in control of the investments – so if your employer changes fund companies it won’t impact you. One thing to watch out for with rollovers - from the time the funds leave one plan, they must be deposited to another qualified account within a 60-day time frame. The paperwork must be done right to avoid the taxes – so take your time and read the fine print when doing rollovers or transfers. We’ve now touched on the basics of 401(k) plans. We’ve talked about the creditor protection rules that apply to 401(k)s, the age related rules, what to think about when choosing investments, and we’ve looked at how rollovers work and when it does and does not make sense to do them. ————————— Thank you for taking the time to listen today.
