Circle the wagons and prepare for American history when Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) read a more recent comic about a much older time: Skybound Comics' Manifest Destiny #1 by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts! There's scant biographical information about the creators, but plenty of information about the expedition of Lewis and Clark, of which they go into great detail. Damon Lindelof (co-creator, Lost, The Leftovers), Chris Dingess (Agent Carter), Noelle Valdivia (Ash Vs the Evil Dead; Manhattan), and Kit Boss (iZombie; Bob’s Burgers).Recorded September 13, 2015.
We're a bit shaken by this week's episode of Agent Carter SNAFU, the penultimate episode of Agent Carter season 1, as we lose one of the SSRs finest in the 7th episode. We discuss the meaning of S.N.A.F.U., the confirmation of a Marvel super-villain in Doctor Faustus and obviously this big death. As well as this we discuss our plans for New York Comic Con in October and some feedback from Lauren and Amy of The Peggy Carter Podcast over on Assembly of Geeks. In Agent Carter SNAFU, written by Chris Dingess and directed by Vincent Misiano, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is cornered and under interrogation by her former SSR colleagues, as Agents Thompson (Chad Michael Murray) and Sousa (Enver Gjokaj), along with Chief Dooley (Shea Whigham), attempt to extract all she knows about Howard Carter and Leviathan. Despite a valiant attempt by Jarvis (James D'Arcy) to have Peggy released, with his fake signed confession from Stark, the rouse fails just as Peggy discovers the true identity of the enemy within, catching Doctor Ivchenko (Ralph Brown) communicating in Morse code with Dottie Underwood (Bridget Regan). However, Ivchenko already has Dooley conditioned to keep Carter under lock and key and steal Item 17 from the Stark weapon inventory. His parting gift to Dooley, as Leviathan make their move with the stolen weapon, is a highly experimental and explosively unstable vest that he is made to wear. As the SSR mistakenly zero in on Carter, Peggy reveals the truth about her own investigation to her colleagues to gain their trust and to expose Ivenchenko as the true enemy. However, all is too late as the SSR pay the ultimate price for their mistake. Thanks again for joining us for our Agent Carter SNAFU podcast. If you have any thoughts on Agent Carter, Ant-Man, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Fantastic Four or of course Daredevil and the future Netflix shows please send them to feedback@defenderstvpodcast.com and we'll discuss them on our future podcasts. The Defenders TV Podcast will return next week with our thoughts on the season finale of Agent Carter "Valediction" . Agent Carter SNAFU [3:44] Welcome to the Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. discussion of the Agent Carter Event penultimate episode! SNAFU was directed by Vincent Misiano and written by Chris Dingess, an experienced crew which showed during this great episode. There was incredible interplay between Dooley, Thompson, Sousa and Carter. And some of the best interaction between Jarvis and Carter of the series so far was in this episode. Dottie showed off some freaky skills and Leviathan is positioned to do some very bad things with the fruits of their Stark-tech theft which we've coined as "Angry Murder Gas." Is Thompson underway with a redemption arc? And sadly we bid a heroic farewell to Chief Dooley, a man who was doing the best he could to keep up with the realities of a new Superhero world. Just what is Dr. Fenhoff doing with the ring and what's his true origin story? And finally will Marvel be able to tie up all the Agent Carter loose ends during this event next episode like Finow, the lost voice boxes, what is really going on with the Stark Tech and don;t forget Roxxon Corporations involvement into the story as well. EXTRAS: Star Trek Generations Ribbon - which Haley has never seen yet. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111280/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Continuum http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1954347/?ref_=nv_sr_1 YVRShoots - A record of movie and television shoots around the Vancouver area http://yvrshoots.com/ NEWS [28:59] [MCU TV] AoS News - Mockingbird, played by Adrianne Palicki, is bumped up to a show regular. This week, Under the Comic Covers covers... not three!... not two!!... but one whole issue!!! Fortunately, it happens to be one of all all-time favorite titles, Chris Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' fantastic revisioning of Lewis and Clark's expedition into the wilds of an untamed America, Manifest Destiny. In one of the best issues of the current arc thus far, Lewis manages one of the best spur of the moment heroic moments, and we manage to talk around that fact with our usual aplomb. In addition to this title, we cover some weekly news, including a great "man on the street" report from Kirk Manley (http://www.studiokm.com/) with regard to NYCC, and we top it all off with Top of the Stack, our new weekly segment covering new and otherwise interesting reads not covered in our usual lineup of books. Chapters Intro (0:00) UtCC News of the Week (1:42) Kirk Manley's NYCC Review (5:18) Manifest Destiny #11 (10:49) Top of the Stack (26:42) End (34:47) Any questions, comments, or cunting five tongued son of a whore's can be sent to feedback@utccovers.com You can also leave us a voicemail at (678) 796-UTCC, that's (678) 796-8822 Download and subscribe to this podcast in iTunes here We can also be found on the Stitcher Radio app for both iPhone and Android users. It's the week of July 4th, and so on this episode of The Comics Alternative the Two Guys with PhDs pay homage to the stars and stripes…in comics! Yes, that's right dear patriotic listener: this week Andy and Derek are focusing only on American-themed comics, new as well as not-so-new. They begin by looking at new recent books where the American project stands front and center. First, they discuss Manifest Destiny, Vol. 1: Flora and Fauna, by Chris Dingess, Matthew Roberts, and Owen Gieni (Image Comics). Both of the guys are bowled over by this first collection and see the series as a great example of American gothic. Next, they turn their attention to the new work by Ilan Stavans and Lalo Alcaraz, A Most Imperfect Union: A Contrarian History of the United States (Basic Books). While the guys applaud the creators' intentions of creating an alternative or oppositional history, they're not convinced that the book lives up to its title. In short, they're hard pressed to find much that is contrary in this contrarian history. But then, after discussing these two new titles, they highlight several of their favorite American-centered comics from years gone by (and some others that are more recent). And what a varied list it is. Andy mentions the following:Strange Fruit, Vol. 1: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History, by Joel Christan Gill (Fulcrum Publishing); American Flagg!, by Howard Chaykin (Image Comics); Saga of the Swamp Thing, by Alan Moore and Stephen Bessetti (DC Comics); Shade the Changing Man, by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo (Vertigo/DC Comics). And Derek briefly discusses several other American-themed titles: Lewis and Clark, by Nick Bertozzi (First Second); The Big Lie, by Rick Veitch and Gary Erskine (Image Comics); R. Crumb's America, by Robert Crumb (Last Gasp); Uncle Sam, by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross (Vertigo/DC Comics). They could have go on and on with other, similar titles, but there's only so much you can pack into a single week's show. So fire up the grill, light up those fireworks, and pledge your allegiance to The Comics Alternative on its special Independence Day episode!
Under the Comic Covers returns this week to talk about two of our favorite titles, The Walking Dead and Manifest Destiny. The Walking Dead #128 gives us a deeper look into the burgeoning new community built after the war and gives us a glimpse into a new internal threat to the relative peace and quiet of Alexandria and their new way of life. As always, we go over our top 3 for the issue and have a chat about Carl's newfound whittling skills and the importance of stale bread. After a between-arc hiatus, Chris Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' Manifest Destiny #7 returns in glorious fashion as our intrepid band of explorers continue on their westward journey across the newly acquired chunk of North American real estate and discover all new mythical beasties and critters. Unfortunately, not all horrible creatures are of the mythical type... some happen to be part of the expedition itself. Plus, we get a look at Lewis as the au natural skin diver. Chapters Intro (0:00) The Walking Dead #128 (3:22) Manifest Destiny #7 (25:59) UtCC Mail Sack (49:40) End (1:07:09) Any questions, comments, or loaves of tasty apocalypse bread can be sent to feedback@utccovers.com You can also leave us a voicemail at (678) 796-UTCC, that's (678) 796-8822 Download and subscribe to this podcast in iTunes here We can also be found on the Stitcher Radio app as well as Swell for both iPhone and Android users. I have reached the point where I have to ask myself, why am I so drawn to entertainment that is dark and depraved yet decidedly humorous? At any given moment I’m yelling at my television, “Oh my God!”, and then in the next moment guffawing, “Oh, my side.” How do I justify these acts of murder and mayhem in a moral sense when applied to the dead, the undead, and the deadly? My answer, it’s simply Being Human. Being Human is the Syfy Channel series that although originated in the UK, has taken on an afterlife of its own here in the States. Three very unlikely heroes, a vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf, form a supernatural support group hell bent on protecting each other from a society dead set on exorcising them from its ranks. Forced into this other world by no choice of their own, they are now forced to “live” out their new existence all the while trying to fit in and be human...or as humanly possible as they can. The series just completed its third, and in my opinion, best season with a finale that leaves each character in limbo. No wait, limbo was the season two finale. In any case, take my word for it that the season three end is an absolute killer. As a result, I sought out one of the writing team to try and get a little insight into what makes Being Human so incredibly thought provoking and yet so darkly entertaining. The embedded podcast is a record of our conversation. Sit back, grab a snack, and get ready to laugh, yes laugh. Never has blood, black magic, and being uniquely human been quite this humorous.
