Dr. Mark Hyman who hosts a very informative health podcast called “the Doctors Farmacy.” And he is known for his "10-Day Detox Diet" program. Now, most health experts don't love the word “detox” and I also don't love the word because of what it has become in the mainstream and what people think it does when they hear the word. But Dr. Hyman claims his 10 day detox is designed to help individuals reset their metabolism, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health. Those are kind of a bunch of buzz words put together… but when I looked into how he does all these things, I really like the thought process behind it. And I also realize sometimes you have to use a bunch of buzzwords to even get peoples attention (case and point looking at the title of this episode… sometimes you gotta be a little click baity to even be heard). This detox program works by eliminating processed foods, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and other potential irritants from the diet for a period of 10 days. The program typically involves consuming whole, nutrient-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of water. I am excited to have it and I am looking to understand how it is used for medicine. Is it used in tea, is it dried out and ingested as a herb? It says it is bitter on some research I have done. It apparently is good for bites & stings too. Dr Stephen Cabral what would you suggest for dosage & use? Thank you gor your feedback Fiona: Hi there, I need some advice on where to get started with supplements and testing. Brief background. Im a 32 year old female and i live in Australia. I am about 165cm tall and about 59/62kgs. I dont have any health issues that I know of however I do suffer from anxiety, depression and OCD. I dont take anything for it and am highly functioning, I study full time as well as working full time. I study in the field of nutrition so I am knowledgeable and look after myself well, eating well 90% of the time and excerise (walking) 6 times per week. I suffer from quite extreme bloating, most obvious around the time of my menstrual cycle. My main concerns /problem areas are my mental state and gut health, which I understand are connected. I would prefer not to be medicated for my anixiety, OCD, depression. I am not at risk of harm to myself or others however it does weigh me down on a daily basis and I would like to try all avenues to get on top of it. What testing / supplements would you recommend I begin with?I appreciate your help. Miren: Hi, I just completed the 21-Day Detox Diet. Although I did see some improvements, I feel like there are still many underlying root causes that still need to be addressed. Specifically, I do believe that I have issues with my cortisol levels, adrenals, thyroid, and bloating. Even on the detox, I was still experiencing bloating, gas and upset stomach after eating the approved foods. I am having problems deciding which lab to purchase, the Thyroid+Adrenal or OAT +Food Sensitivity test, as I can only afford one lab at this time. I still have weight to lose that is not responsive to diet and exercise. However, I don't know if I should address my gut issues first? My concern is that If I choose to address my adrenals and thyroid first, then I will not see the best benefit because my gut issues will continue to cause the inflammation and bloating? Do I have that wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do want to get better, but only have limited funds at this time (even with the new payment plans) **For reference, I am a 41 yr old female, 5'2 and 134lbs. I work out with weights 4 days a week, 2 HIIT sessions, 2 days a week jogging for 30 min. I have been on a low carb/keto diet for over 3 years. My body used to naturally sit at 120-123lbs without much effort, prior to me experiencing these weight and gut issues for the past 2 1/2 years. I started to have gut issues around 13 yrs old. I have also had ovarian cysts, ulcers, shingles in my early thirties, and also lost my period for 18 months after trying to diet down for a fitness competition ( I was able to get my period back after having to take progesterone from my doctor). I am contacting you because my fiance´s dad had a brain tumor last year. After some treatment with chemotherapy and the latest laser systems that they have, here, in Sweden , the tumor run away. We are so glad and happy that it went well and now we are working in the recovery part. The thing is that the recovery is being really slow , is hard to see the steps and keep the motivation for him and also the rest of the family. Nonetheless, he did some improvements with physical theraphy, where he use to go ones per week and also my fiancé helps him to exercise ones per week or twice per week. However, the memory , the confusion and the disorientation is really hard to improve. He has no control of the time in the day, neither de day in the weeks. If we say that we have to meet in 2h , he may call you back after 15min and say that he is already at the place , thinking that is already the time. Latelly it has been going a little bit worse again and I wanted to ask you if there is any alternative medicine that can help him? And also if you could give us some tips to improve the recovery process? He has always been eating vegetarian and he hasn´t drink alcohol in the last 7 years.However must say that, even though I know that sugar is really bad for this type of situations, I have seen him eating candy or some other type of refined sugar. I came across your podcast and felt like you may be able to help me with my current health situation. Our 10 month baby has been exclusively breastfed and has severe eczema on her face, chest and legs. This started when she was 3 months old. I have cut pretty much everything out of my diet - gluten, dairy, eggs, grains, soy, nuts, nightshades, refined sugar - to the point I'm only eating a handful of vegetables and some fruits. I'm aware this is not sustainable for me or her. We also had to take a break from giving her solids because she would flare after everything we've given her (green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash). We are both on probiotics and seeing only minimal improvement from that. I had to take antibiotics and ibuprofen after delivery due to a lot of complications so I know my gut is compromised and I'm on a healing journey with that. However, it's been months and we aren't getting much better. I feel like we still react to certain foods including meat (chicken, beef bone broth). Which tests would you recommend to get started on figuring out my gut and do you have any suggestions on how to proceed from here? I was thinking food sensitivity test, but since I'm only eating a few things, I feel like those would automatically show up on the test. Are there any tests you'd recommend for our baby? In 2015 I was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain spotted fever. I took 2 rounds of doxycycline and was told I either got over it or I didn’t. Since then I have had several health problems. High cholesterol high insulin extreme fatigue. I have made some life changes over the 4 years. Have done 2 21 day detox have done your deep sleep protocol and have done the omega test the thyroid adrenal hormone and the heavy metal test. I have followed the recommendations on them and though have seen some improvements I still have those days where I can’t function Just feel run down. It’s hard to explain but it feels like my immune system is always fighting and it wears me down. Have sinus issues but other than that I’m lost. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Also tested for Lyme and co infections and came back negative. Whether it be for weight loss or reversing illnesses, knowing what diet myths that aren’t true can ultimately guide us to eating right. Dr. Mark Hyman is a former mentor of mine who will help bust several diet myths in today’s episode. Growing Up Years Dr. Mark Hyman grew up in Spain, and he recalls his mother loved shopping at the market every day for fresh food. His mother also tended her garden at home and always stressed the need to buy fresh and eat fresh. As he grew older, Dr. Mark Hyman chanced upon a book written by Roger Williams called Nutrition Against Disease. That book influenced him to lead a healthy lifestyle until he became a yoga teacher apart from teaching health and becoming a vegetarian. “I’m 58 years old now. I look at my body 30 or 40 years ago when I first became a vegetarian. I was a scrawny thing with no muscle mass,” recalls Dr. Mark Hyman. “And I am now exercising far less. But changing my diet to more high fat, low starch diet, with adequate amounts of good quality protein. And I am far more muscular and fit than when I was 20 years old.” Food As Medicine Dr. Mark Hyman remembers that he got sick from mercury poisoning in China years ago. He discovered a whole new world in functional medicine because of his illness. Food was the primary medicine to cure his condition. Dr. Mark Hyman food is a drug because it acts faster and cheaper than most drugs. “There have been so many additives added to food over the last hundred years, almost 2,000 additives in our food. Very few have been tested adequately and were passed by the FDA as safe until we learn that they’re not,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. Dr. Mark Hyman, there’s so many examples of additives like transfat. It is a part of our diet that has never been proven to be safe. “There’s a lot of things in our food that we think is healthy. A lot of health food store products have thickeners that cause leaky gut, toxic plastic containers, and all kinds of food additives,” Dr. Mark Hyman revealed. “It can cause autism, neurodevelopmental issues, and psychiatric problems. Artificial sweeteners can also cause weight gain, diabetes and damage the gut microbiome.” Finding The Right Diet I currently practice a keto and paleo diet. This is because my Naturopath found our I had elevated cardiovascular markers and my blood work was not going in the right direction. It’s tricky finding the right diet that works. Dr. Mark Hyman says that lowering meat intake is a great starting point as well as portion control. Busting diet myths has been his expertise for the longest time. What The Heck Should We Eat Book Dr. Mark Hyman says we have to look more comprehensively at our diet. In his book, Dr. Mark Hyman writes about diet myths and what science shows. Mostly, his book does more than just busting diet myths. It is an eater’s guide to food in the 21st century. The book teaches you how to eat food and what brand is good for your health, planet, climate, economy, helping poverty and violence and providing educational disparity. Dr. Mark Hyman illustrates that food is at the center of all those situations. Statistics Don’t Lie Dr. Mark Hyman explains that a ketogenic diet contains 70 percent fat. It is extremely high fat and very low carb diet. The ketogenic diet reverses diabetes of over 60% of people suffering from the disease, 4% got out of medication and insulin. “My body composition changed when I changed to higher fat diet, and eating lots of protein, vegetables and lots of fat. My muscle mass increased even if I was not exercising as much,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. Effects On the Environment Dr. Mark Hyman says that one of the issues of the environmental movement is to eat less meat. But what meat are we eating? If it is grass-fed meat, Dr. Mark Hyman says it’s a whole different issue. Dr. Mark Hyman also mentions that there’s a book called Kiss the Ground by Josh Tickell. It’s an amazing story all about the soil. Because soil is the key to our health in so many ways. “The carbon from the environment gets sequestered or held in the soil. Soil erosion and other negative effects on the soil are happening because of how we grow food. Hence, properly grazing animals can help the soil regenerate,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. Importance Of Fiber Dr. Mark Hyman says fiber is important because it fertilizes the good bacteria in the gut. He also says that our microbiome is essential. “Because when we feed our microbiome junk food, they turn into junky bacteria. They also produce some nasty chemicals. When we feed them a lot of fiber, there’s a huge difference in the health of the microbiome,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. Studies have shown that Americans only eat an average of 8 to 15 grams of fiber a day. Typically, 50 grams is a right amount to target aside from drinking a lot of water. Dangers Of Sugar And Flour Dr. Mark Hyman reveals that half of Americans have pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Currently, 90% are not diagnosed, and 70% of Americans are overweight. “We are biologically designed to crave and love sugar because it helps us store fat for the winter. If we could eat anything that’s starchy, has carbs, sugar or honey, we will put on weight right away. And that’s a good thing from an evolutionary point of view,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. But he also adds,”Now in our era, we have 152 pounds of sugar and 133 pounds of flour which is worse than sugar. We are actually in a toxic situation. Because Flour has a higher glycemic index than sugar.” Busting More Diet Myths Dr. Mark Hyman says the standard advice of eating less and exercising more to lose weight is the biggest lie. He says it’s about the quality of the calories you eat, not the amount. “If you focus on what you’re eating and not how much, you will naturally do the right thing. So when you can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet, you have to make sure that you’re eating the right food,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. Dr. Mark Hyman also says that people who eat a high glycemic diet have a higher risk of dementia. So we should all be eating an extremely low glycemic diet. He explains that people who eat gluten do tiny microscopic damage to their gut which leads to inflammation. Ultimately, it breaks the linkages between our cells and our intestines will become loose, also known as leaky gut. “If you know how to work your biology, you can be fully satisfied, happy and energetic with your diet. You don’t have to deprive yourself. Use science rather than willpower to fix your biology,” said Dr. Mark Hyman. Today I sit down with Vanu Bose, Founder and CEO of Vanu. Vanu attended MIT and in-between his undergrad and graduate work, spent two years working at a non-profit which brought him to over thirty countries around the world. After MIT, Vanu started a company based off of his PhD work, which was around the idea of software upgrades instead of hardware upgrades to update cellular network standards (2G to 3G to 4G etc), potentially saving the wireless industry billions of dollars. Their technology is being used in places like Vermont, India, and Rwanda where they are currently working to provide coverage to one million people who previously had no wireless coverage. Currently, there is over one billion people in the world who don’t have voice coverage. Vanu is looking to change that.
