Inspiring Women in Hospitality
#197 Maya Ziadeh: When I learnt to be myself, this is when I started to succeed in my career

Inspiring Women in Hospitality

On this episode we hear from Maya. She studied to be a lawyer before coming into hospitality, which started in Dubai in 2002. She studied law to please her family, but she chose hospitality for herself as she knew this is where she would excel in her career. Beauty of hospitality is that you can have a creative career. She started as a hostess at a Lebanese restaurant at the JW Marriott in Deira and now she is in a CDO role with Accor for the middle east region. She credits a mentor she had early on in her career and her own desire for learning that has guided her path. She has had a few "battle scars" along the way, but it was also what pushed her to get to where she is today. When asked about the evolution of women in leadership in hospitality of what she has seen over her 20 years career, she said there has been changes and there is still some work to be done. And for those women who want those roles in a male dominated environment is not to be deterred and go for it, it is possible. When it comes to men and women working together, instead of competition she invites us to look at it as complementing each other. Another invitation she has for us is to embrace vulnerability and be authentic to ourselves.

If I Fell cover: The Beatles. House of the Rising Sun cover: The animals. Face to Face Hart to Hart cover: The Twins. Stop Crying Your Heart Out cover: Oasis. Morin.

Gavin will not be amused when he finds out she's 'borrowed' his car, but since their brutal break-up Deira's not been acting rationally. Maybe a drive through beautiful France will help her see things differently. Grace has been sent on a journey by her late husband, Ken. She doesn't really want to be on it but she's following his instructions as always. She can only hope that the trip will help her to forgive him. And then - finally - she'll be able to let him go. Thrown together by chance, Deira and Grace are soon motoring down the French highways, sharing intriguing stories of their pasts, as they each consider the future...

I know that a lot of big box stores. I mean heck you can buy them almost anywhere nowadays even the grocery store has those. You like Deira flame type logs and things like that are those good are safe to burn in your fireplace.Everything's OK to burn in your fireplace except for wax candles as long as you get it inspected and if it necessarily clean every year.Do people call you when they're buying a house or moving into a different house because they want to see if the chimney is is is workable and usable.Absolutely. For many realtors or be referred by many home inspectors to have a fireplace properly inspected due to their moving in or moving out. We're doing we're doing the functionality of a fireplace chimney.Chad why would somebody use an easy carry insta great rather than buying the big old you know old school grade that I remember my parents and my grandparents had in their fireplaces.Well the easy carry integrate as it informs in its name was developed for the chimney sweep so they could offer a great to the people of the public so they don't have to go to a big box store to buy a great it's ready for them to burn as soon as we leave.Nor are they something that needs to be replaced very often.Definitely a question about how much you burn and what you burn on it. So the more you burn the more the. Well I mean it's a piece of metal. No matter if you buy a big a big one little one it's all going to depending on how thick it is and how much you burn.I know that you talked in the past about being a certified chimney technician. What makes you different than you know Joe Schmo from down the street that goes ahead cleans chimneys.I'm not just a certified Sumii technician I'm a certified master technician. I've been certified for 14 years. Got my master's. And you've gone through all the steps to prove that you actually are proficient in what you're what you're inspecting fixing and repairing and you've proven that you know what you're doing by taking a path that is not required by the states to take. But it is absolutely a valuable task to take to prove that you know what you're doing in a fireplace in the street. We are the most reviewed chimney company that I'm aware of in the country we're four point eight rated Google readings with the most reviews in Dallas Texas. And as for home adviser were the most reviewed company that they have in the chimney the fireplace industry in the country. It is.

Gary Bembridge of Tips for Travellers shares observations, tips and advice for visitors to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Subscribe free to the show on iTunes, Stitcher Radio or TuneIn Radio. This show covers among other topics: Observations You either love Dubai or you hate it!Some say : Surreal, bizarre , draconian, soulless, superficial Others say : dynamic, bold, modern and adventurous Mix of conservative and liberal with lots of inconsistencies (e.g. full burka wearing women next to skimply dressed ones and lack of alcohol tolerance but heavy drinking in hotels). Seen as a shoppers paradise although I am not sure prices are that amazing despite being duty free nature. Mix of nationalities in the population of around 2,5 million with less than 20% of the population being UAE nationals. Safe and not lot of petty crime HistoryBritish controlled the area until 1971 when 6 other states formed UAE (Abu Dhabi, Ajman,Fujairah , Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaiwain). Each has lots of autonomy though is a Supreme Council of Rulers that overseas total UAE Dubai has biggest population and 2nd in size after Abu Dhabi - oil was discovered in Dubai in 1963 turning a quiet pearl diving, fishing and trade port into wealthy  oil producer - but unlike neighbours like Abu Dhabi it does not very large reserves and as will run out the ruling family (Constitutional Monarchy  ruled by the Al Maktoum family) has invested into creating a major hub for finance, transport, trade and tourism and went on vast ambitious program of infrastructure building. It almost came undone in the 2008 crash but neighbouring Abu Dhabi bailed them out.Best time to goHot pretty much all year  roundBest time Sept to MayGetting therePossibly best airline hub in the world ! Cruise lines increasingly calling here and the port is close to townWhere to stayJumeirah Beach areas - where most resort hotels with beaches are More business hotels are on Sheikh Zayed roadGetting around Drivers generally are poor! Metro - modern, cheap, air conditioned , easy to work out - smart card tickets - get day pass - ticket machines / signs / on-board voice also in English - some carriages of women and children only at peak times Monorail from base of the Palm Atlantis - not connected to the metro. Taxis are cheap and efficient to use - though traffic can be bad at all times of day and night. Busses  best left to locals. Cross Dubai Creek on small boats called abras (water taxis). Hop-on Hop-off bus operated by Big Bus includes tickets into attractions like Dubai Museum, Al Maktoum's house, Arabian dhow, water bus ride and some walking tours General tips Remember you are coming to an Islamic country. Wear respectful clothing (avoid shorts, exposed shoulders and ankles ). Topless suntanning not allowed. Avoid public signs of affection like hand holding kissing. Same sex affection real taboo. Illegal to drink or be drunk in public - drink driving will get you in prison. Drugs and pornography laws very draconian and strict - even some prescription drugs are illegal. Restrictions on some publications and affiliations like Jehovah Witness. Take care what photograph - do not photograph women in traditional dress without prior permission. English widely spoken. Western-style toilets are not everywhere - but are in malls Tips on must do things to see and doVisit the new iconic buildingsBurj KhalifaWhen opened in 2010 became tallest man made structure - viewing platform on 124th floor. Pre booking is much cheaper but need to do well in advance. Fast Track on the day for immediate entry 400 Dhiramas (about £60 or $100).Burj Arab HotelMost luxurious hotel in world - designed to resemble a sail and has heli-pad above 27th floor. Entry only with a reservation - afternoon tea is classic - strict dress code of smart casual. The Palm and AtlantisMan made reclaimed land - visible from space - 4000 villas each with own beach front - 5000 apartments - restaurants -sports facilities - cinemas - Marina docking Atlantis Hotel - based on original Bahamas hotel billed as a "watery world of wonder" - aquarium with 21 water exhibits including lost Chamber and waterparkActivities Wild Wadi Waterpark - in my view the best in the world! Ski Dubai is  -4 degrees C with a big ski slope, tabogan run and ski lift - entry includes gear except hats and gloves which can be bought. Four-Wheel Drive Sand Dune expeditions - high speed rides which also take you desert camps to do camel rides and dune surfing HistoricalAl Faheidi Fort Dates from 1800s - oldest surviving building in city - now popular museum opened in 1970 -  tells story of development of UAE life and history with models and exhibitions.Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum house - former ruler who died in 1958 lived here - built around central courtyard in 19century around 30 rooms and traditional wind towers (old fashioned air conditioning system )Grand Mosque - near the museum(though the Jumeirah mosque is more impressive buildingShopping Explore the famous and traditional Souks - traditional ones all close to each other in Deira area across Dubai Creek (get there by traditional boat, metro or taxi ). Gold (priced by weight with small charge for work done to craft into an item) and Spice are the most impressive. Haggling expected! Malls - lots of them - huge air conditioned and up market. Three of note in my view: Dubai Mall - sometimes referred to as biggest in the world - ice rink and also massive aquarium - go through to get to Burj Khalifa - free wifi - fountain show at night (like Bellagio Las Vegas). Mall of the Emirates - more dated - Dubai Ski based here. Emirates Towers Boulevard - luxury boutiques and reputation for being the most expensive and prestigious. Other things to do Helicopter or seaplane trips. Arabian Dhow evening cocktail cruises on Dubai creek Catamaran tours along beaches and around The Palm Explore the Dubai Marina area

It is being proposed by Stansfilm, who are now seeking backers for the project. "Over the past few years attempts have been made to revive the series but unfortunately failed. Now, in 2011, a script has been written by Richard Carpenter and plans are being made to bring back Robin of Sherwood... Stansfilm are presently heading an attempt to bring this series back to your screens... ...but we need YOUR help to make it happen!" Find out more on the Stansfilm website.   Song of Solstice by Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra What a wonderful way to start the show! Jennifer Cutting and her Ocean Orchestra bring us the title track to her new album, Song of Solstice. This rousing Celtic Folk track is a brilliant example of the high quality of foot-stomping music that you can expect from Jenifer and the crew! You can find out more about Jennifer and the Ocean Orchestra on their website at Ocean Orchestra or on our Contributor Page.   The Traditions of Yule and the Yule Log collected by Ruthie In this piece, we talk about the Holly and the Oak Kings, Holly & Mistletoe, Santa Claus' Reindeer, Herne the Hunter and the symbolism of the Stag and deer. We then go on to examine the origins and traditions of the Yule Log in much more detail. Much of the detail came from [Wiki].   The Wheel By Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. You can find his music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. . You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD hereYou can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor Page on our website.   The "Spirit of Albion: the Movie" Trailer We talk about the new trailer for the movie, The Spirit of Albion. You'll be able to see this on our website if it does not show above.     The Woodcutter's Poem by Mother Goose We bring you a lovely poem purportedly from Mother Goose that teaches children about the best logs to burn for a good winter fire. Although, We couldn't find a direct link the source for this is minogue.com. The full version of Mother Goose can be found at Project Gutenberg. We also found it at Legendary Dartmoor under the name of a Dartmoor Log Poem. It has long been a traditional English folk song as can be found at the Traditional Music website.    We're also proud to accompany this poem with Anne Roos' wonderful track The Gold Ring (details in the credits at the bottom).   A Fire Fit for a Queen by Cernunnos Rising George Nicholas and Cernunnos Rising bring us a unique blend of new age, Celtic, pagan, druidic music, featuring evocative songs with deep and well crafted lyrics; reminding us of a living tradition that explores the mysticism of trees, the waters, the air that we breathe, the seen and the unseen and delicate balance in all things.   In this show you can hear his song, A Fire Fit for A Queen from the album Wild Soul, which carries on the wonderful traditions of logs and wood that we've been talking about in this show. You can find out more about Cernunnos Rising on their website or on their Contributor Page. Midwinter Story by Chris Joliffe Astoundingly, Chris is an undiscovered talent - that is, until now! This amazing bard has given us permission to use some of his amazing stories and poems in the show and we're sure that you'll love them just as much as we do. In this show, you can hears his wonderfully evocative, Midwinter Story. We hope to bring you much more of Chris in the future and in the meantime check out his Contributor Page to find out a little more about him.   Hymn to Herne by S. J. Tucker Critics describe S.J. Tucker's music as the perfect mix of witty and weighty, and she takes listeners on a fantastic, genre-hopping ride with just her voice, her guitar, and occasionally a drum. Fans of all ages come to see SJ Tucker for more than just the stories she weaves into her songwriting -- her musical talents are second to none. Her style is classified, at times, as "Celtic Blues", while her instrumental and vocal talents earn comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, and Jeff Buckley. Not confined to one type of song or another, SJ spans opera, chant, and rockergrrl, employing deft guitar hands and the bluesy, powerful voice of a 300lb gospel singer--finely contained in a petite frame which earned her first band the name 'Skinny White Chick' by accident. We are really proud to bring you her Hymn to Herne from her album Blessings, a powerful, blood-pounding evocation of atavistic force. You can find out more about Sooj on her website at sjtucker.com or on her Contributor Page.    The Wild Hunt We talk about the belief in the Wild Hunt, or Raging Host. Fairies, the dead, or a historical, legendary figure? We also talk about Hunt leaders, such as Herne the Hunter, Gwyn ap Nudd and his white hounds and the Herlathing.   Promo - The Amber Treasure by Richard Denning Cerdic is the nephew of a great warrior who died a hero of the Anglo-Saxon country of Deira. Growing up in a quiet village, he dreams of the glories of battle and of one day writing his name into the sagas. He experiences the true horrors of war, however, when his home is attacked, his sister kidnapped, his family betrayed and his uncle's legendary sword stolen.  Cerdic is thrown into the struggles that will determine the future of 6th century Britain and must show courageous leadership and overcome treachery, to save his kingdom, rescue his sister and return home with his uncle's sword. The Amber Treasure is Historical Fiction set in Dark Age Northumbria and can be found on Podiobooks.com.   Solstice Evergreen by Spiral Dance Multi-award winning group Spiral Dance, based in Adelaide, has been playing rousing, high-energy music to enthusiastic audiences throughout Australia and beyond for over a decade. The richly-textured and powerful song Solstice Evergreen, recalls ancient times with a powerful driving force that reminds us that the spirit is still very much alive today.
