Dental caries A.K.A. “tooth decay or dental cavities” is the most common noncommunicable disease worldwide. Cavities and tooth decay are among the world's most common health problems. They're especially common in children, teenagers and older adults. But anyone who has teeth can get cavities, including infants. Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the enamel, the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. They can affect your general health and will usually causes pain and infection. If cavities aren't treated, they will get larger and can lead to a severe toothache, infection and tooth loss. Dental caries is an expensive disease to treat, costing between 5–10% of healthcare budgets in industrialized countries, and is one of the main reasons for hospitalization of children in some high-income countries. On this show we will discuss the causes as well as the natural and safe way to prevent and treat this serious dental problem.

I'm Anne Budenberg, and I'm a dentist with over 30- years experience in NHS and private practice, including roles in secondary care, dental education, risk management and mentoring. I started this podcast to show the diversity of views, and choices dentists and dental care professionals can, and do make, on their career paths, and about creating a fulfilling career. This is for anyone interested in UK dental careers - for those working, or planning to work as a dentist or dental care professional in the UK. Dental careers are no longer simply linear, or binary choices, but we have many possibilities for hopping on and off whichever career path, or ‘squiggly career,' you chose to take.Sometimes the path is planned; at other times, it takes unexpected twists and turns, and you end up at a place you did not expect to find yourself.‘Squiggly careers' is a phrase coined by career development consultants, Helen Tupper & Sarah Ellis, and I love this concept, and the fact that every ‘squiggly career' will be drawn differently, and is unique. We'll be exploring some of the opportunities, challenges, and adapting to change throughout your career, as the landscape changes. In this episode I'm speaking to Prof Rhiannon Edwards, BSc. Econ, M.A., D.Phil., Hon. MFPH Professor of Health Economics and the founding Director of Health Economics research at Bangor University. She specialises in economic evaluation of public health interventions, and particularly behavioural interventions, including dentistry. We're talking about Health Economics, what it is, and why it's relevant to dentistry.Prof Rhiannon Edwards leads the Public Health Economics Research Group (PHERG) at CHEME which takes a life-course approach to the methodology and conduct of economic evaluation of public health interventions. Prior to being at Bangor University, Rhiannon was Lecturer in Health Economics at Liverpool University with an Honorary position with Liverpool Health Authority. She was Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Excellence in Health Promotion Economics, University of Chicago. She published papers on choice in health care and co-authored an international comparison of waiting lists in public health care systems following her fellowship to the USA.Please join us, and don't forget to share your feedback & ideas on what's important to you about this topic.References:· Cost‐effectiveness Analysis of the Dental RECUR Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial: Evaluating a Goal‐oriented Talking Intervention to Prevent Reoccurrence of Dental Caries in Children (Published, Jan 2022)https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9021113/· Dentistry and why it's a great career (July 2017)https://www.nature.com/articles/sj.bdj.2017.617· GROW modelhttps://www.performanceconsultants.com/grow-model

We delve into diet, nutrition and food as risk factors that influence Dental Caries onset and progression, giving an epigenetic explanation.
Early childhood dental caries (ECC) are the most chronic infection now among children between ages two and five. The culprit is sugar. ECC’s are about much more than just baby teeth. “Caries” is another term for cavities, and they can be prevented if you know what to do. The teeth effect the health of every system in the body. Infectious diseases from this are preventable. How do early childhood dental caries affect children? Children with autism very commonly have problems with their teeth due to poor absorption of nutrition from an ill gut, inflammation, toxicity, and internal infections including Lyme, mold biotoxins, PANS/strep and staph(MARCoNS). Their body is in a state of chronic stress. This in turn elevates the stress hormone called cortisol. There is a chronic inflammatory response from body infections or from untreated dental caries. Get your free mold and Lyme resource guide here. The behavioral impact on neural development continues on into adulthood if ECC’s are not properly treated. It’s now proven that adults with dental disease correlate to coronary heart disease. Microbes from periodontal disease are linked to inflammation in the brain and due to the brain’s response to the inflammation it creates various types of neural disruption and has been associated with Alzheimer’s. What makes us susceptible and what can we do to prevent ECC’s? If a parent has a history of bad teeth then the child is more susceptible. The gut also has an impact on the overall immune system and chronic infections. Staph infection in the nasal passageways, and other sinus infections drip bacteria into the moth causing decay so keeping the sinus’ clear and healthy is important. A xylitol spray can be even more helpful that a saline nasal spray. Early childhood prevention of dental carries begins at birth. The first dental visit should be at six months of age, and no later than age one. Be sure to see a pediatric dental specialist. There’s no need to wait until your child’s first tooth erupts to begin oral hygiene. Any remaining food, including breastmilk, left in the mouth can begin bacterial overgrowth. Wipe your child’s gums clean after each feeding of any kind. Never give a bottle to them at bedtime or to go to bed with. Know that milk and juices contain high amounts of sugar and can cause decay. It’s also important to supplement with adequate amounts of vitamin D3 for strong teeth and bones. What symptoms do I look for? A child with untreated ECC learns to think that tooth pain is normal. It may be why your child is a picky eater, or seems to be. Click Here for more details.

When many of us think of health and wellbeing, we don’t automatically think of oral health but imagine life with a constant toothache, or not being able to chew properly or speak clearly due to tooth decay or gum disease. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare states that, “Good oral health is fundamental to overall health and wellbeing.” There is nothing ambiguous about that statement!Today I chat with my dentist, Dr. George Forrest, about this crucial aspect of our wellbeing. George explains what causes and the various forms of oral disease, and, some of the impacts it can have. We chat about the life cycle of teeth and he clears up the mystery of wisdom teeth - why we have them and why some people need to have them extracted. It turns out, unsurprisingly, that the foods that are good for our bodies, like unprocessed whole foods, are also good for the health of our teeth and those foods and drinks that are less beneficial, like sugary drinks (including sports drinks) are the enemy of good oral health. Many of us have heard this but we may not know exactly why and George clarifies this for us. What I was interested to learn was that frequency of contact with sugar rather than quantity is the real culprit in the case of tooth decay and gum disease. It is better, therefore, to skol (or scull) your raspberry lemonade than slowly sip it all day.George also describes the gold standard in oral hygiene - see if you are meeting it.If you are based in Adelaide and would like to learn more about Dr George Forrest’s practice, here is a link to his practice website: http://www.forrestdental.com.au

I am happy to report that based on current research, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD ) no longer advises moms to stop breastfeeding throughout the night. Current research shows that there is no conclusive evidence that prolonged breastfeeding or breastfeeding during the night increases the risk of early childhood cavities. It is likely this information may change... perhaps by the time you have your next baby, or perhaps 20 years from now when your baby has a baby, the advice will be different then what you are hearing today. http://allaboutbreastfeeding.biz/bites
