The Purpose Code How to Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, and Leave a Lasting Legacy In this thought-provoking episode of Richer Soul, we reconnect with Jordan Grumet, a hospice doctor, financial expert, and acclaimed author of Taking Stock. Jordan shares his reflections after the release of his book and addresses a common paradox about purpose: its undeniable importance and the anxiety it can cause. This conversation dives deep into how purpose intertwines with health, longevity, and financial well-being. Key Takeaways: Purpose Is Multifaceted: Jordan discovered that purpose is not a singular entity but comprises at least two distinct forms. One form leads to happiness and health, while another can trigger anxiety and dissatisfaction. Purpose Anxiety Is Widespread: Research indicates that 91% of people experience purpose anxiety at some point in life, signifying how common and stressful this quest can be. Finding Purpose Through Action: Jordan emphasizes that purpose does not necessarily precede actions or achievements. Instead, it often emerges through life's trials and experiences, dispelling the myth that one must "find" it first. The Role of Reflection: Conversations, life changes, and challenges can ignite a re-evaluation of one's priorities, paving the way to understand and refine purpose. Money Learning: Jordan's journey reiterates that financial planning is not just about amassing wealth but ensuring it aligns with a meaningful life. Purpose, as he asserts, must be a precursor to financial strategies, enabling money to serve a life well-lived rather than becoming its sole pursuit. Guest Bio: Jordan Grumet is a doctor and financial independence expert whose unique career bridges the worlds of hospice care and financial education. He is the host of the award-winning Earn & Invest podcast and author of Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life. His forthcoming book, The Purpose Code, further explores the intersection of life's meaning and financial wellness. Key Discussion Points: Impact of Hospice Care: Jordan shares how working closely with terminally ill patients revealed deep insights into life priorities and regrets. Purpose and Financial Independence: Aligning your money decisions with life's purpose leads to a richer, more fulfilling life. Purpose vs. Anxiety: How to navigate the stress of seeking purpose while understanding its profound benefits. Lessons from the Book's Reception: Insights from readers and audiences have expanded Jordan's understanding of purpose and its challenges. Conclusion Purpose is not a destination but an evolving journey shaped by our actions, reflections, and decisions. Jordan Grumet reminds us to start with what matters—our relationships, values, and experiences—and let finances serve as a supportive framework rather than the focal point. Whether you are redefining your path or exploring new directions, this episode will inspire you to find clarity and peace in the journey of purpose. In this episode of Finding Financial Freedom with The Frugal Physician, host Dr. Disha Spath sits down with Dr. Jordan Grummet, a distinguished physician and the creator of the award-winning Earn & Invest podcast. Together, they explore Dr. Grummet's latest book, The Purpose Code, which provides an inspiring and practical guide for those seeking to lead a more meaningful life. Through thoughtful conversation, they delve into "purpose anxiety," the contrast between "big P" and "little p" purpose, and the relationship between financial independence and personal fulfillment. Highlights and Key Takeaways: Defining Purpose Dr. Grummet introduces the concept of "big P" purpose—often associated with society's grand expectations, like achieving massive goals and material success—which can lead to disappointment and anxiety. Contrastingly, "little p" purpose emphasizes finding joy in everyday processes, focusing on personal agency, and cultivating happiness through meaningful, small actions. The Paradox of Purpose and Anxiety Studies show that while having a purpose is linked to longevity and happiness, up to 91% of people experience "purpose anxiety" at some point. Dr. Grummet discusses how societal pressures shape unrealistic expectations, creating a disconnect between achievable happiness and purpose. The Role of Purpose in Financial Independence (FI) Dr. Grummet reflects on the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement and how a rush toward financial goals can lead to dissatisfaction. He emphasizes that finances should support a purpose-driven life rather than serve as the ultimate goal. Building a Purposeful Financial Framework Dr. Grummet advises on the importance of aligning financial goals with purpose, allowing money to act as a tool that supports one's personal "purpose anchors." Examples include pursuing passions alongside work and taking a "slow-FIRE" approach to financial freedom. Exploring Regrets and Legacy Dr. Grummet shares stories from his work in hospice, revealing how end-of-life reflections often center on missed opportunities for joy rather than financial accomplishments. He encourages listeners to identify and act on their unique purpose anchors, ensuring a legacy of personal impact rather than material wealth. Practical Exercises for Identifying Purpose Anchors Dr. Grummet offers practical advice on exploring and building purpose anchors, including exercises from The Purpose Code that help readers focus on the values and activities that bring them true joy. Final Thoughts on Purpose and Happiness Dr. Grummet concludes with a reminder that purpose should be abundant and anxiety-free. By focusing on what truly matters in life, we can find happiness in both the journey and the outcomes. Jordan Grumet, aka Doc G, is an accomplished doctor, blogger, public speaker, podcaster, and author. He is the host of the incredibly popular and award-winning podcast Earn & Invest. I think of him as a time-money philosopher. Today we discuss his book Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life. I would consider this book a companion book to JL Collin's "The Simple Path to Wealth". Actually, I would read Jordan's book first. This is a show about mindset, life, and reverse engineering your death. As one of Jordan's patients aptly said, "Dying is easy. Living is the harder part." Hospice physician and podcaster Jordan Grumet is sharing how his work with hospice patients creates deep conversations about end of life planning, money, and life. Dr. Grumet is currently an associate medical director at Journeycare Hospice. After years of blogging about financial independence and wellness, Jordan launched the Earn & Invest podcast in 2018. In 2019 he received the Plutus Award for Best New Personal Finance Podcast and was nominated in 2020 for Best Personal Finance Podcast of the year. Jordan believes in having end of life conversations early and often. He's seen the positive influence of those conversations in the lives and deaths of his patients. After losing his dad at an early age, Jordan noticed people didn't know how to be with him and his family, or what to say to them. Jordan wanted the medical care he provided to align with his patients' end of life wishes, so he joined a hospice interdisciplinary team. He considers his real job to be supporting his fellow team members as they provide the moment-to-moment, bedside care. Jordan endorses including financial discussions when we're having conversations about healthcare needs in later life and when we're approaching death. Caregivers are often dealing with money issues as well as the typical challenges of being a caregiver. Jordan's podcast Earn and Invest deals with topics like focusing on retirement and determining the things that matter most. What are dapps? You're probably familiar with applications (apps), the programs you use to stay organized, order food, play games, book a ride, do your work, avoid doing your work, and quite literally a million other things. Now, there are also crypto apps, known as decentralized apps, or “dapps” for short. A dapp is simply an app that runs on a blockchain. On the surface, many dapps will look and feel just like the apps you already use every day. But under the hood, you'll find the innovations and decentralized benefits of blockchain technology.Dapps are where you go to give purpose and utility to your crypto. You can invest, trade, buy, play, and explore Web3. What can I do with dapps?A lot, and more every day! Once you've got a self-custody wallet, you can start to explore all the different ways to engage with dapps:Swap: Exchange your tokens for other cryptocurrencies or fiat.Lend/Borrow: Take out crypto loans or lend your crypto as a way to earn.Pay: Facilitate remittance, business, and peer-to-peer payments quickly and across borders.Earn: Invest and build savings. Stake your crypto or join a communal crypto pool to get rewards on your assets. Shop: Use your crypto to buy gift cards, flights, products, and services.Manage: Stay on top of your portfolio of crypto, NFTs, and other digital assets, analyze your crypto transactions for taxes and accounting, and process stablecoin payments for you or your business.Impact: Use crypto to create a movement like the SEED coin I support communities in need and raise consciousness, learning journeys, or even funds for causes that matter.Interact: Create a unique username on Celo and join social or professional networks to find and support talent.Collect: Browse NFT marketplaces to buy, sell, view, and show off your NFT collections. You can also create and distribute your own NFTs.Play: Discover a wide range of games, including play-to-earn and NFT-based games. How dapps differ from appsLike many things on the blockchain, dapps are decentralized, with all the benefits decentralization brings. Most notably, they can give users more control over their data–how much they share, how they share it, and how it gets used by the dapp.Let's compare this to the traditional app experience. While your rideshare or food delivery app may be running on your personal device, everything on the backend, where the real work happens, is owned and controlled by the company that makes the app. Using their app means entrusting your private data, like identity, location, and banking information, to a company that may be lax or opaque about their security measures or gasp not have your best interests at heart. They collect your data because their business model depends on it. The more data they can harvest, the more detailed info they have to sell to advertisers and make fortunes. Blockchain dapps, on the other hand, work differently. They charge small transaction fees in exchange for their service. They don't require any personal data and allow you to keep your identity anonymous. Doesn't that sound nice? This simplicity is partly because the controlling entity behind the dapp is not a company but a smart contract, the behind-the-scenes code that runs them. Smart contracts are so crucial to dapps and Web3 that we gave them their own explainer. The benefits of dappsOn top of everything that dapps do, here's what makes them so great:Communal: The code of many dapps is open-source and visible to all. So if a developer finds a way to improve a dapp, they are free to make those improvements. This open-source ecosystem fosters a sense of communication and collaboration that benefits everyone. Anonymous: Many dapps don't need your personal information to work, just need your wallet address. Your banking info, identity, location, and other personal data stay safe. Secure: The data on blockchains are spread among many nodes rather than just a few servers, so it's more resilient to hacks. Always Open: There is no off-the-clock when code runs dapps instead of people. Therefore, your crypto and places where you can use it are always available to you.The challenges facing dappsThere is always an awkward adolescent phase with emerging technologies, especially ones as complicated as blockchain. The user experience, particularly the onboarding flow, needs some smoothing out. Developers and designers are still figuring out how to eliminate hoops, or at least make them easier to jump through–things like setting up and securing a wallet, buying or swapping the right cryptocurrency from an exchange, etc.Additionally, dapps ask more of their users. In exchange for higher security, users are responsible for keeping their passwords, seed phrases, and other personal data safe. If you get locked out of your account, or if your account gets compromised, there's not much you can do since there's no central authority that can help you regain access. So users need to do some research to ensure the wallets, blockchains, and dapps they interact with are safe and then practice ongoing diligence to ensure they're using them correctly and responsibly. The future of dappsThe dapp ecosystem is increasing rapidly. In 2020, the total dapp transaction volume passed $271B. In 2021, the number of unique daily active wallets connected to dapps increased 7x. It's easy to see why many people believe dapps will completely replace traditional apps in the coming years. The list of things you can do with dapps grows every day, and the possibilities are exciting. Developers and designers are creating new and fascinating dapps, reinventing existing industries, unlocking novel ones, and steadily chipping away at the early challenges with dapps. But dapps are already a great way to discover opportunities on the blockchain. Now that you know more about how they work, you're ready to see what dapps can do for you.

Money can't buy everything. It can't buy you the most important stuff like love, health, and family. In this episode, learn how to have a rich and purposeful life regardless of money as I chat with Doc G aka Jordan Grumet about his new book on money and life advice as a hospice doctor. Jordan is a financial expert, host of the Earn & Invest podcast, author, and currently an associate medical director at Journeycare Hospice. "When I've sat with the dying, almost never do they say, I regret that I only ended up with a networth of $500,000 and I really wanted to hit that million mark. No one said that. What people tend to regret is that they didn't spend the energy, courage, or time doing those things that were most important to them." - Jordan Grumet "Even the most lucky of us are going to deal with life's issues, financial or otherwise, and having that strength of saying, I am already enough, as you face these problems is a great starting place." - Jordan Grumet "Money is not the goal, it's a tool. And it's a tool to utilize to better live out a life of purpose, identity, and connections." - Jordan Grumet What You Will Learn From This Episode How working with people as they transition from life to death changed Jordan's view on life and money What really is the core of having a rich life, regardless of money 'Medicaid divorce' - what you should know about it FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) what people get wrong about it Some exercises to help you know your identity and your purpose in life Suggestions to manage your mental health and money if you feel burned out Why you should invest in other ways, not just financially How to use your money to actively avoid the regrets of the dying Steps you can take to protect your finances and your family in the face of death About Jordan Grumet: Jordan was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1973. Today, my interview is with Jordan Grumet who also goes by Doc G. As a hospice doctor who teaches people and inspires people about their relationship with money, Jordan paved a path to questioning many assumptions about money and the pursuit of happiness. In our conversation, Doc is sharing what he's discovered along his life journey and how that relates to living a better life, to making better choices for yourself and why he decided to write his new book, Taking Stock. I think it is life-changing for so many people when you take a step back and question the assumptions you are making and decide how you can not only have a better relationship with money but live more fully as a result. Enjoy. Doc G shares with us his insights: We have all these things that we wish we did. Why do we wait til we're dying to come to terms with others, right? It's a very common thing for people who are dying to do something called the LIFE review and come to terms with who they are, and what their life was about and what they regretted, and what they found joy. But what if we could do that way earlier? Like your mom and the sense, I think she's giving that gift to you. She's saying it's too late for me. But you can now go back and take some of what I've been feeling and integrate into your life now. And my belief is that we all should be doing that. We should all have a little bit of that perspective of hospice patients. So that we can start looking at our life now and trying to figure out what is important. What should we be spending our time doing; how do we have enough economic resources to use money as a tool, instead of a goal and use it as that tool to then do things that give us a sense of purpose identity and connections. The first one is, you have to think about purpose identity and connections before you start considering and worrying about money and wealth. I think if you don't do that, you find yourself changing what you believe are chasing what you believe our economic needs and you're not fulfilling your souls needs. So you end up wealthy on the outside, but rather bankrupt on the inside, or at least feeling fairly poor because you don't know what you really want to focus on in life. So, first and foremost, I think you need to really think about purpose identity and connections, what do you want your life to be about? What are your goals? What are your bucket list? And, I think you need to think about that at the beginning of your career. That's part one. Part two is then you need to set up a financial framework to fit within that purpose and identity. So now, I know, who I want to be in what's important to me. How can I build a financial life? And for me, I'm very interested in financial independence. How can I pursue financial independence? But do it in such a way in a framework that speaks to what I thought my purpose and identity were. ...answering this basic question of whether you're worried that you're not going to have enough time to spend it. You're going to die young or you're going to live for a long time and worried about running out of money. I think, if you can answer that last question, you can then put that all into perspective of what you want out of life. Because the idea again it all comes back to we want money to be a tool to get us to our goals. We don't want it to be a goal because money itself or wealth it never really made anyone happy. But what it allows us to do, which is kind of trying to figure out who we are, what our purpose; what gives us meaning; what kind of things we want to strive towards; that's what we want to use our money to do for us. That makes me happy so in the book I call that the climb. This idea of making headway towards something that's deeply important to you. It's a joke, we have in my family. I always tell my kids may you never reach your dreams, but may you get 90% there. And that's kind of my my thought is that I think it's really great to keep on striving towards something that really matters to you. But sometimes getting to that thing you thought that was important is not nearly as fun as the climb to get there. Medical School is a perfect example. Becoming a doctor was awesome and amazing. But I have to tell you, some of my greatest years were I when I was in the act of becoming. Because it was this goal, I was getting closer and closer, but it was still just out of reach. And talk about waking up every morning and being excited, something changes when you actually get to that goal. It just doesn't feel the same. So this act of becoming; this act of being in the midst of the climb; this act of enjoying the process, I think, is what true happiness really looks like. Jordan Grumet was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1973. His interest in becoming a doctor was ignited when his father, an oncologist, died unexpectedly in the prime of life. This profound loss not only inspired him to practice medicine, it has given him a unique perspective as a financial expert, challenging him to think deeply and critically about concepts like wealth, abundance, and financial independence. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Jordan received his medical degree from Northwestern University, and began practicing Internal Medicine in Northbrook, Illinois. He currently is an associate medical director at Journeycare Hospice. After years of blogging about financial independence and wellness, Jordan launched the Earn & Invest podcast in 2018. In 2019 he received the Plutus Award for Best New Personal Finance Podcast and was nominated in 2020 and 2021 for Best Personal Finance Podcast of the year. His book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life is being published by Ulysses Press in August 2022. This week on the podcast, let’s talk about the value of time.Time has value to us - both in personal and economic terms. It’s something we often fail to consider when making decisions about how long to work and when to retire. These decisions often focus only on the financial aspects of retirement planning. But as we get older, time becomes a more limited commodity - it’s just that we don’t know exactly how much of it we have left. And, deciding how to use the time available to us involves much more than money. My guest on the podcast this week has had hundreds of conversations with people nearing the end of their lives. They often talk about the things they wish they had spent more time on, and what they wish they had worried about less. Jordan Grumet has an unusual career profile. He’s a physician who specializes in hospice care. And, he is a personal finance blogger and host of the Earn & Invest podcast - and the author of a new book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor’s Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life.In his medical practice, Jordan often talks with patients who may have only weeks or months to live. And the lesson he draws from these conversations is that most of us spend too much time thinking about money, and not about our purpose in living, our identity and personal connections. In his book, Jordan draws out the lessons from those conversations in a way that we can all start using now. I think there are some really useful points here that can be especially helpful for people thinking through the issue of retirement timing - when to do it, how to manage it financially and how to do it in a way that is personally meaningful. Aside from Social Security, which is adjusted annually to reflect consumer prices, retiree income is fixed. Policymakers have talked over the years about making the Social Security cost-of-living formula more generous, but that would just be a tweak. If we really want to help seniors cope with inflation, we need to tackle the rising cost of health care, which historically has increased more quickly than general inflation. Congress is considering an important step in this direction with a proposal aimed at containing prescription drug prices. The proposed legislation would empower Medicare for the first time to negotiate the price of some high-cost drugs with their manufacturers. That approach has been in place for a long time in the Medicaid program, and at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and it has proven effective.Just as important, the bill would place a hard cap of $2,000 on out-of-pocket costs for Part D enrollees. And it would require pharmaceutical makers to pay rebates if drug price increases exceed general inflation. But we need to do more. Taking Stock A Hospice Doctor's Advice Take away: Abundance is not about having a lot of money but it has something to with time, interests and relationships. There are 2 billion mothers in the world today of which 85.4 million of them are in the U.S.. 4.3 babies are born each second. Notably, A sizable minority of children in rich countries live with just one parent — a parent who is likely to be female, and also likely to be working. Speak to virtually any successful human being, and they will likely credit at least some of their good fortune to their mother’s tutelage. I was one of the sizeable minority of children who grew up with just one parent. When I was eight years old, my father died suddenly of a cerebral aneurysm leaving behind his wife and three young children. My mother, at the time a house wife and formerly trained as a chemist, fortuitously was 6 months from graduating from a prestigious business school and quickly secured a position at a big corporate accounting firm. By my own recollections, my childhood was lacking in nothing. Logically, I know that after my father died that times were tough. But, those early memories of my mother as a stay at home mom and then widow were quickly replaced by those of the accountant, landlord, investor, and entrepreneur that she became. And somewhere during all the tumult and turmoil of childhood, she managed to pass on to us children a sense of security and values that continue to guide us in our journeys today as husbands, fathers, and financially successful adults. Today I introduce you to my mother Harriet. She graduated college from the university of Michigan and eventually earned a masters degree in organic chemistry. After marrying my father, she left her PhD program to follow him to Thailand after he was drafted into the the Vietnam war and she taught highschool at the international school of Bangkock. She was a few months away from finishing her MBA at the Kellog School of Business when my father unexpectedly died. Left with three children and no immediate source of income she moved effortlessly to corporate America on the path to eventually running a business of her own. Furthermore, she became a savvy stock market investor, landlord, and successful entrepreneur. She also taught me almost everything of value that I know. Today I invite my mother on the show to discuss growing up with immigrant parents, her early money lessons, career, and the joys of grandparenting. Happy Mother’s day….today on Earn & Invest
Welcome back, today on Earn & Invest we discuss life after retirement. Search Amazon or any best seller list and you’re likely to find a number of books regarding the financials behind leaving the workplace. In fact, Americans are retiring in their mid-sixties and can look forward to enjoying as much as a three decades outside the structured work force. Up to now, affordability has been at the forefront of the conversation. With their new book, Retiring:Your Next Chapter is About Much More Than Money, Former senator Ted Kaufman and Business consultant Bruce Hiland draw our attention to an oft forgotten aspect about the ending of our formal careers. Ted Kaufman is the former U.S. Senator from Delaware succeeding Senator Joseph Biden. Ted was Biden’s Chief of Staff for nineteen years and led his presidential transition planning in 2020. He taught at Duke Law School for twenty-six years. Bruce Hiland’s career included working for global consulting firm McKinsey, more than four years as Chief Administrative Officer at Time Inc., twenty years of independent consulting, and four startups. When Bruce and Ted both reached retirement, they realized that instead of slowing down, people are leaving their jobs feeling ready to take on the world. They’re financially independent, active, and capable.... And then, suddenly, they have nothing to do.
