But before that conversation, we get to a listener submitted hot take about how Better Than Revenge by Taylor Swift is about Evelyn Hugo and Celia St. James, characters in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which Renaissance enthusiastically agrees with. We again address the nature of centering men and how it plays out in the 'biphobia' surrounding rhetoric about Amber Heard. For the media discussion part of the episode, we rant about how much we hate the recently released Hulu original movie CRUSH, which has been getting too much hype for being a contemporary lesbian high school romcom when it is so bad. In our recommendations to each other, Renaissance recommends the show Dr. Foster, despite the fact that Sunny is not a big TV watcher. Sunny recommends Kelly Quindlen's lesbian young adult novels- She Drives Me Crazy (2021), Late To The Party (2020), and Her Name in The Sky (2014)- as sapphic books that deserve more hype among the LGBTQ YA book community. Along the lines of better teenage girls/lesbian media like Derry Girls and Booksmart, we encourage people to watch better comedic shit featuring sapphic teens.

Brett Kissel is constantly exploring new ideas, while never forgetting what he does best. It's an approach that has propelled him to the top of Canadian country music, with two Gold certified albums, a Platinum and eight Gold singles and 15 top-10 radio hits to his credit. 2019 was a storybook year for Brett, winning the JUNO Award for Country Album of the Year and earning the Canadian Country Music Association's Fans' Choice Award, following a record-breaking 112-date tour that reached every single province and territory. The Canadian Press crowned him “The New King of Canadian Country.” The accolades continued in 2020, when Brett was the big winner of the CCMA Awards, earning 4 trophies, including Fans' Choice, Male of the Year and Album of the Year. Although some artists might see these accomplishments as a cue to hit cruise control, for this proud husband and father of three, it's only added fuel to his fire to give his audience more, and to expand his musical vision. That's precisely what he's done on Now Or Never, the first in a series of albums the pride of Flat Lake, Alberta, already has planned to release on an annual schedule. Now Or Never sets the tone of the new decade by delivering a dynamic mix of 21st Century country (“Drink About Me,” “She Drives Me Crazy”) and traditional heartstring tuggers (“I'm Not Him, I'm Not Her,” “Coffee With Her”) that are sure to find a place alongside Brett's best-loved songs. But listen carefully and it's clear there's a lot more going on. “I was in a really creative zone coming into making this record, and had written so many songs, that we decided to concentrate on the ones that showcased the diversity within my sound,” he says. “That's been the case with every album I've made to a certain extent, but now we want to take the lessons we've learned from those records and really focus in. There's traditional country, pop country, and acoustic country, which really plays into the eccentric style I have as an entertainer!”” Brett credits co-producer Jacob Durrett for covering a lot of the bases on Now Or Never and channeling the creative energy in exciting directions. With experience working with artists in nearly every genre ranging from country to hip hop, Durrett's cutting edge studio techniques gelled perfectly with Brett's goals. “Jacob and I are the same age and have been buddies in Nashville for about eight years,” Brett explains. “We've both come up through the ranks together, and as I started planning Now Or Never it felt like the right time to collaborate with Jacob. He's been able to put more of an international spin on my music, and bring out different nuances in my voice.” That said, Brett didn't leave his longtime producer Bart McKay out of the process, and his steady hand maintained the album's overall cohesion. The seamless blend of the new and the familiar is the real strength of Now Or Never, exemplified by the first single “Drink About Me,” which rocketed to the top of Billboard's Canadian Country chart (Brett's second career #1 single) soon after its release. It's set the stage for the arrival of the album's more pop-friendly tracks, particularly “She Drives Me Crazy,” which places Brett squarely at the heart of country music's current evolution. “My family and I are just like every other music fan. We are all over the place. With the ways people listen to music these days, I don't think anyone pays attention to genres like they used to,” he says. “One of the tracks from my last album We Were That Song, ‘Anthem,' had a lot of pop elements in it, and it became my fastest single to go Gold, as well as becoming an instant favourite in our live show. So with that in the back of my head, I sat down with Karen Kosowski and Emma-Lee to write one day, and we started trading lines. ‘She Drives Me Crazy' was finished in 45 minutes, and it was an amazing experience.”

Hi pals, coming up on this week’s episode of Go With The Heat a team  of vigilantes try to recruit the duo to their side in the episode Over the Line.  On This Week In Vice we’re taking a look back to when this episode of  Miami Vice aired, from March 19 – April 29, 1989, when Miami Vice was  King. Show notes and more: http://gowiththeheat.com Early show access and a new sticker pack!  https://www.patreon.com/gowiththeheat In news… There is a lot of news to talk about in the month and half between  Miami Vice episodes so lets rapid fire a few stories. On March 26 the  USSR held its first free elections, selecting Boris Yeltsin. On April 15 96 people died in a FA Cup match later called the Hillsborough Disaster. The on April 19 47 crew members of the USS Iowa died in an explosion in the Number Two gun turret.  The biggest news of this timeframe was the Exxon Valdez  oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The ship struck the Bligh  Reef, spilling 10.8 million gallons of oil into the sound. Duo to its  remote location, the spill cover 1,300 miles of coastline and 11,000  square miles of ocean. Numerous oversights led to the disaster including  a drunk captain and the senior officer who was supposed to be in charge  asleep in his bunk.  In Sports… On March 22 goalie Clint Malarchuk  suffered a life threatening injury after two St. Louis Blues players  crashed into the net. During the hit a skate from Blues Steve Tuttle cut  Malarchuk’s carotid artery. Malarchuk lost 1.5 liters of blood and 300  stitches to patch the 6 inch wound.  In Music… In this time period there are technically five songs that would reach number one on the Hot 100, one of them I will skip until next time. First up is The Living Years by Mike + The Mechanics. This is one of many number one hits from the band who makes constant appearance in Miami Vice.  Up next is The Look by Roxette and rounding out our rapid fire look back is She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals. The last song and the one I’ll spend a little more time talking about is Eternal Flame by The Bangles.  From the album Everything the love song would be a worldwide phenomenon. The Bangles were perfect for the MTV generation and this music video played around the clock throughout 1989.  In Movies… As with music there are four movies that would claim the top spot at  the box office during this timeframe. First up is the unnecessary comedy  sequel Fletch Lives starring Chevy Chase

I am officially declaring summer!  I'm sorry, but I can't wait and the music contained in this four-volume set and the subsequent T-Dance series that will be coming out next week will be a testament to that fact.  So it is written, then it must be true.  After pouring through hundreds of promos, I somehow managed to cut it down to four volumes each containing fourteen of my picks for some of the hottest tunes coming to a dance floor or radio sometime soon.  Granted, this is all subjective and sometimes I am wrong; but I can assure you my overall track record is generally pretty darn good. That being said, here are my picks to click:  First we get not one but two brand new tracks featuring the very talented Simone Denny.  We start off with the blazing electro of "Luv Sick" a collaboration with Jean Maxwell and later what is sure to be the anthem of the summer "Your Love" with Max Vangeli and Digital Lab.  Keeping up with the harder electro squeeze, we get "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" by Sweet Mercy featuring Veba.  This is a big room electro track with powerful vocals that will have you grooving from the first note.  Out of all the promos I went through, there was no shortage of 80s remakes and this one by the S.O.S. band in 1980 is a surefire winner that didn't try to copy the original.  I have to say that the overall majority were just plain donkey doo.  Among that list were "She Drives Me Crazy"," "Billie Jean" and the most atrocious of them all "Eye in the Sky" originally performed by the Alan Parsons Project.  As Moon Zappa once said, "Gag me with a spoon." Next on the list is "Love Sex Magic" by Ciara and Justin Timberlake which is already blowing up everywhere.  Take special note that I went with the unreleased Alexander and Mark VDH mix which is just awesome.  Though not their typical mixing style, it further proves their flexibility and someone you need to watch in 2009.  Other favorites include the 2009 update of the classic "Summerfish" by Leonid Rudenko and Daniella, Studio Apartment's "I Want U 2 Move", Lenny B and NJ's "Turn Up the Radio" and "Wud If I Cud" by Anthony Wright. One other thing of note: I've decided to remove the rating system from each song.  If I talk about the song, you can guess this is a 4 or 5-star mix and if I don't it's at least 3-1/2 which is still very good and certainly noteworthy.  I've also got a lot planned for the remainder of May, so stay tuned.  I'll be back tomorrow with volume two.  Until then, sit back, relax because summer has arrived.  Enjoy!
