In today's episode, Dr. Ellis and I discuss key factors contributing to weight loss struggles, the impact of stress on adrenal health, and the often overlooked issue of PMS. Dr. Ellis highlights the importance of addressing diet, exercise, and hormone balance when it comes to weight loss. She emphasizes the role of insulin in weight gain and the significance of maintaining a balanced diet with adequate protein intake. Understanding the impact of hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen, on metabolism is crucial for achieving sustainable weight loss. We then discuss the vital role of adrenal glands in managing stress and the impact of chronic stress on overall health. Dr. Ellis shares valuable insights on the importance of managing stress through lifestyle changes, including proper hydration, adequate sleep, and incorporating adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and holy basil. Addressing adrenal dysfunction requires a holistic approach that goes beyond just supplementation. One of the most interesting parts of our discussion revolved around the normalization of PMS symptoms. Dr. Ellis emphasizes that experiencing severe PMS symptoms, such as debilitating cramps and mood swings, is not normal and should not be dismissed. She teaches us the various factors contributing to PMS, including hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and environmental toxins. Understanding the root causes of PMS is essential for improving women's overall well-being. This episode with Dr. Ellis sheds light on the interconnected nature of weight loss struggles, adrenal health, and menstrual health. It's crucial for women to prioritize their health, listen to their bodies, and seek professional guidance when experiencing persistent symptoms. Tune in now to learn more! Friends, today I'm talking about a topic I've been referencing a lot recently. If you listen regularly you'll know I'm currently in pre-menopause so I often talk about what's going on with my periods. So many menstruating people have irregular, super heavy, or very painful periods and it's always bothered me that we've been told this is normal and don't understand what we can do to get us to a place of normal periods. Which is why I'm so excited to introduce you all to Dr. Erin Ellis! Dr. Ellis is a naturopathic doctor who helps with hormone balancing, fixing periods, and regaining energy. She's so compassionate to talk to because I feel listened to, which we often don't feel when we talk about our periods.Dr. Ellis touts the beauty of naturopathic medicine as being able to really get to the heart of the menstrual issue. Her job is to dig and find out why things are irregular or painful and then to fix it. One of the things Erin and I agree on is understanding that we're allowed, as women, to advocate for ourselves and learn to insist on lab work and better investigation. Dr. Ellis explains the importance of hormones, managing stress, nutrition, exercise, quality of sleep, the types of environmental chemicals we're using on our bodies and how every one of these things will affect menstrual cycles. This is why periods are often called the fifth vital sign because they really do tell us if other things are not working right or need looking into. Dr. Ellis has practical tips on getting the types of examinations we need, how we can help ourselves through nutrition and sleep, and explaining what's happening so we can gauge what's normal and what isn't. This conversation will be a game-changer for so many of us!__About Dr. Erin Ellis:Dr. Ellis is a Naturopathic Doctor who helps women balance hormones, fix crappy periods and regain the energy they once had to be their happiest, healthiest selves. On this weeks episode, Mom and Me dive into Pisces Season with Erin Ellis & Keely Alexander. Since Pisces is represented by the two fish, we figured we needed two guests! Keely and Erin are best friends, certified homeopaths, and Pisces, who want to help you reach for the stars with your health and wellness goals. As homeopaths, they seek to recognize and interpret the constellation of symptom patterns in your life, similar to how astrologers recognize and interpret the astrological aspects of your chart. Just as astrology is a way to help understand yourself better, homeopathy offers the same– a way to explore your mind and body as a connected whole, and heal through that with the help of homeopathic remedies. Your story and the way you experience and respond to the world are as unique as your birth chart. Working with a homeopath is a lot like working with a good astrologer – they can help you to recognize and realize your best version of yourself by working WITH your uniqueness. Erin is based out of Saskatchewan, Canada; Keely out of Austin, Texas. They both have virtual practices and work with clients worldwide. Self coaching questions: Hearing- What's that one song that makes your heart flutter with joy every time you hear it? What band makes you do a fist bump in the car? Whose voice calms and soothes and reassures you? Is there a poem that you love to hear read aloud? What sounds of the natural world remind you of the glory of creation? Write some sounds down that spark joy. Seeing– What's that one show or movie that you could watch over and over? Whose eyes can you look into and feel a release the stress of the day? What pictures, images, or even colors help you feel most like yourself? Write down some things that when you see them, you experience joy. Touch– What fabric do you most enjoy wearing against your skin? What does it feel like to touch the hand or the arm or the back of the head of your child or significant other? What products feel most luxurious or nourishing on your skin? Taste– Try to remember the last truly great meal you remember enjoying. What flavors or textures did you experience there? What was something you ate recently that had you saying, "I should eat this more often." What foods or drinks do you associate with joyful memories? Smell– What are the smells that make you close your eyes and smile? What smells do you associate with the people or experiences you love the most? After you answer these questions, create a master joy tool kit list and put it somewhere you can see it or find it. Today we are speaking with Dr. Erin Ellis, NMD jamming on all things hormones! She's a Naturopathic Doctor who was initially introduced to the profession during her own journey of kicking cancer's ass. She explains how Naturopaths go beyond what typical doctors search for, and how they do the work to find the true cause of a problem instead of prescribing a bandaid solution.Even further, we talk specifically about hormones and about how so many women accept symptoms that they don't have to deal with. Meaning...cramps, heavy periods, hormonal acne, etc. are NOT normal. Listen to this episode to learn more!Say hi to Dr. Ellis on her Instagram or her website! Also, check out her period quiz! Hang on a minute. My mind is blown. Did Dr. Erin Ellis seriously just tell me that understanding my period can make me more productive (not just RE-productive?!!)oh yes. Yes she sure did. Growing up when I did, your period wasn't something you knew much more about than the ever present knowledge of when it would reoccur. (no white pants during that time!). I NEVER considered that it carried with it much more hormonal changes than simply making me a little bat-shit crazy and crave some chocolate. Chatting today with Dr. Ellis, she opened my eyes to the fact that knowing your cycle and all the hormones associated with it can make you a better real estate agent. Want to book a client party for your database? Try not to on a day when hormonally you are low and have negative energies. Want to brain storm with your team on goals for next year? Plan that on a day when your hormones and energy levels are sky high. And give yourself permission to just take a break when you need to. We are women and this is natural part of our bodies. So don't just live with it-understand it. Want to check out Dr. Ellis? You can find her on the 'gram @dr.erinellis or here for all her info!Check out her podcast!

As we continue our Wellness Week, I am so excited to welcome Dr. Erin Ellis, Naturopathic Doctor. Dr. Ellis Shares : In 2010 I was diagnosed with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 31. I never thought in a million years I would have been diagnosed with cancer at such a young age, but it was the turning point in my life. I always wanted to be a doctor, but gave up on those dreams because I was sick of being in school, and instead worked in the bar and restaurants, but always knew I could do and be more. After 6 rounds of chemotherapy, a positive attitude with a side of determination and sass I became a survivor. Receiving this diagnosis and kicking its butt gave me the drive, the motivation and determination to get out of my own way and become that doctor that I always wanted to be. Not only did it give me my defining purpose in life, but I learned a lot about myself and really how strong I truly was. Having had a cancer diagnosis at such a young age, my mission and passion now is to empower those to take control of their health now before it is too late. Imagine going to work today, a normal day, and then suddenly you are in the hospital for 7 months and your life is never the same again. That is what happened to Erin in his twenties when he was working on remodeling a Victorian home that caught on fire, while he was inside. He went from being a capable twenty something twenties to having 80% of his body burned and being completely dependent on others for a long time. BUT. There is always a “but” to great stories. Erin didn't let that define the rest of his life. On this week's podcast episode, Erin shares his story and how his business was actually birthed from that experience. He let the incredible challenges he faced shape him, rather than put him down. Hello everyone! My husband graciously agreed to play continuo with me again this week-- thank you Charlie! I was first introduced to this sonata by my friend Erin Ellis, and since then it's been one of those "bucket list" pieces that I've wanted to learn and perform. If you like this movement, I encourage you to check out the rest of the piece, as well as some of Vivaldi's other cello sonatas; they are fantastic pieces. Wishing you all a peaceful next two weeks. Thank you for listening! Performers: Jessica Sammis, cello Charlie Nilles, bass Huge thanks to my husband and all-around music hero, Charlie Nilles, for recording and performing on today's episode.
