Finding any reason to not do the things we need to do, letting the small things balloon out of control, distractions can stop us dead in our tracks. When pitfalls derail your success, may the force be with you! It's these pitfalls that have the greatest impact on whether or not you finish on top. You gotta have the force to face these pitfalls. Believe or not, a lot of us make it to the mountaintop. We reach the goal and are ready to move forward. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? It's these little pesky potholes that slow you down, throw you off course, and change your enthusiasm. Now some might think that if you've reach the top, who needs to concern themselves with these pitfalls. Well, it's these pitfalls that can hold you back repeatedly to get you where you are supposed to be headed. Some of these pitfalls as you know them are: Self-doubt - Always questioning your abilities and that you're not good enough! Fear - It's the unknown. What you don't know you run from. Whispers of Negativity - These are those quiet voices repeated over and over again that continuously slow down your next steps. Perfectionism - This is the endless dissatisfaction of what you have done wishing you could still do better. Never satisfied. Overthinking - Trying to have everything just right before moving forward. Blame game - Overlooking yourself and calling someone else out. Not willing to take responsibility. Comparison - Looking side to side trying to be someone you are not created to be. Self-induced expectations - This is setting parameters as to how something should turn out, what it looks like, and how it should work. Peek-a-boo of the past - You can't escape the past because you haven't let it go. You need to forgive to move on. All of these areas you can control. But when you let these pitfalls sneak in, they can easily derail your success. So how can you keep moving forward in the midst of pitfalls? The K.I.S.S. ~ May the F.O.R.C.E. be with you! What I’ve learned from performance psychologist Simon Marshall is that your brain and nervous system manage everything about you, including your ability to cope and overcome the difficulties of life. David Raichlen, PhD. is a Professor of Human And Evolutionary Biology at the University of Southern California. Being Brave is Not the Absence of Fear: It's The Courage to be Vulnerable

Being brave is not about the absence of fear, it's about having the courage to be vulnerable - to press on in spite of fear. The first memories I have of someone using the word brave is when I was a little kid.  For most, it usually has something to do with having to get a shot at the doctor or getting an injury of some kind and then an adult telling us to be brave.  In cartoons, the hero or heroine is often characterized as someone who is brave- someone who will go into battle knowing that the consequences could be dire.  But I've seen portraits of bravery show up as someone who appears stoic and doesn't show vulnerability or cry.  This is where I think the definition of bravery starts to diverge from what it actually means. One of my favorite taglines I made up for my own life is "Be Brave. Do Epic Shit."  I have put a lot of thought into what it means to me to be brave.  To be honest, trying to avoid feeling and showing difficult emotions has been one of the harder parts of bravery for me.  Bravery means actually letting yourself feel those emotions without letting them defeat you or change your path.  This discussion could get complicated really quickly if we bring in things like masculinity.  Men, especially the older generation feel pressure not to show or feel vulnerable emotions. Perhaps my view of bravery initially came from men.  I remember even from a young age wanting to be viewed as masculine instead of feminine because I used to think masculinity was akin to strength and bravery.  Oh how wrong I was about that! It's a complex topic for another Crush It Monday.  Continuing with my digression for another moment, I still hate comments about women being emotional, or "crying like a woman."  I AM a woman and I struggle with some of my emotions. I can only imagine what it must feel like for some men.  I think this is an important discussion, but I need to move on to what I think it means to be brave. First, try to think of the first time in your life when either someone told you to be brave or you realized you did something that made you brave.  This is what Matt's story was: he was in grade 9 wanting to take Japanese, but Japanese was with all the upperclassmen that he looked up to. He had to get up in front of the class and say something in Japanese and was afraid he would look stupid, but he realized he had a choice and did it anyway.  Matt felt uncomfortable and did it anyway. What are some elements of bravery tucked under the overarching theme of a "willingness to be vulnerable"? If you go to the dictionary, bravery and courage go hand in hand.  Being brave is "to have courage" and courage is "the ability to do something that frightens one" or "strength in the face of pain or grief." Being Brave is Not the Absence of Fear It's feeling the fear and doing it anyway.  It's doing it in spite of the fear. Now this doesn't mean doing something irrational like saying "I'm brave" and then walking out into traffic.  It's not saying "I'm brave" and putting yourself needlessly into a dangerous situation.  A whole other topic of discussion would be where is the line between bravery and dangerous risk?  How can you be more brave and do something you're afraid of?  Personally, it's been considering my outcomes and asking myself what the worst-case scenario would be.  Minor injury?  Embarrassment or shame if I fail? Wasted time? Simply not being able to do it?" Often the fear of the thing preventing us from being brave is way worse than if it actually were to happen in real life. Simply considering what the worst case will be might help you overcome your fear.  Another thing is that when you feel some fear and are moving forward anyway, it's paying attention to how your body feels.  Does it feel tight?  Breathing long slow breaths can help too. Being Brave is Not Burying Your Emotions, It's Sitting With Them I'll say it- I hate it when I cry. It doesn't feel good to me and it makes me feel weak.  Posting a video of myself crying and then later using it in my TED Talk was one of the scariest things I've ever done.  I still cringe when I know thousands and people have watched it. This is a really negative and untrue view of crying, layered with all kinds of baggage and unfair judgements.  It takes courage to sit with discomfort- whether it be emotional or physical and sometimes and emotion is both.  Burying and denying emotions because they hurt does not make you stronger and it's actually unhealthy.  Over the last few years, I've worked on letting myself feel some of those emotions I would hide from.  I would hide from anger by going and exercising really hard. I think that it is healthy to blow off some steam, but there are times you can't just go exercise when you're angry.  I think learning to say to yourself  "I feel angry" or "I feel really said right now" and then "and it's okay" is a powerful exercise. As endurance athletes, we are used to sitting with physical discomfort for hours but emotional discomfort?  No, that can be so much harder! Call it self-compassion, call it being brave with your emotions, or even call it mindfulness.  The space between the emotion rising and then recognizing what it is before you react is a good first step (maybe you lash out or maybe you bury it).  Learning to sit with it and that it'll pass is another thing. Being Brave Means Setting Boundaries and Having Humility Sometimes being brave means speaking up for yourself and putting yourself first.  That includes examples like saying no to others and setting boundaries or saying no to yourself if you're engaging in critical self-talk or patterns of overplanning that lead to burnout.  It can even mean turning around and going home to rest if you're feeling tired and overtrained on your bike.  It takes courage and confidence to say no, to do less when you're tired, or even to rest if it feels like you're falling behind.  Being brave can also mean standing up for yourself or for others. Being brave means being willing to love deeper which is inherently risky because you can suffer emotional pain if it doesn't work out. Being Brave Means Moving Forward Despite Uncertainty I've had to learn new situations of bravery in my pregnancy which has had a lot of uncertainty and lack of control. Simply moving forward in my cycling career has been an act of bravery, of putting myself out there, of accepting really disappointing rejections because of other people's biases of what I will be capable of in the future as a professional athlete mom of an infant.  There are days I've wanted to give up and felt like my idea of the future was impossible because other people didn't believe in me, but I kept moving forward and I will continue to do so.  Uncertainty and fear can be the same thing, but being brave means showing up, choosing to keep trying in the darker moments when you don't know what it's going to look like, when it feels like everyone is against you or doesn't understand you. And you know what?  The more times you sit with those difficult emotions and feel them, the more times you choose over and over not to give up when you want something to happen, the more times you press on even when no one else believes in you and you emerge on the other side- that's when your own hero comes out. That's when you look yourself in the mirror and say, "hell yeah, this is what it means to be brave." Cultivate your own potager (vegetable garden) to "grow a few things to eat fresh". And only grow what you love to eat and share. 6. Disperse flowers throughout your potager, let go of perfection and separation. 7. Place your fresh, delicate vegetables and fruits (tomatoes, courgettes, most fruit) in a compote on the kitchen counter to be reminded to use them immediately (or very soon). "A big part of comprehending joie de vivre is understanding that enjoyment in day-to-day life is the true key to happiness. Finding happiness in small things means that ordinary days are filled with pleasures rather than obligations. Joyful anticipation of life's everyday events is part of bringing joie de vivre into your home in a lasting way." 8. Grow your own garden of herbs 9. Make food shopping enjoyable - visit a special shop, a farm stand or make it a social engagement. 10. Enjoy good, seasonal food and revel in it. 11. Welcome cheese into your eating regimen 12. Regularly frequent le marché in your area when available "Great food and ingredients can be found anywhere. One just has to make more of an effort and decide on a lifestyle choice about the quality of the food." ~All You Need to Know About the Markets in Provence 13. Make the kitchen the center of the house, but it need not be state-of-the-art. 14. No need to spend a lot of money to have a pleasant workable kitchen - regular height chairs, let go of the high stools, so you can relax and enjoy conversation - sitting back, etc. Only purchase the equipment you will actually use and buy quality items that will last. Here are a few ideas: 3-4 pots with lids, a cast iron skillet (keep it seasoned), a teakettle on the stove for boiling water, a Dutch oven or cocotte, but again, only tools you will need for the food you and your household enjoy eating. ~Why Not . . . Use Simple Changes to Transform Your Kitchen? 15. Have the basic cooking utensils stocked in your kitchen so no matter what the season, you can make what you enjoy: 3 sharpened knives (paring, chef's and serrated), 2 cutting boards, earthenware jugs full of different wooden spoons and spatulas, a stainless-steel spoon and 8-oz ladle, perforated stainless steel spoon, tongs, a whisk, 3 graduated mixing bowls, a fine mesh strainer, hot mitts, a hand-cranked can opener, cork screw, cotton kitchen towels, and a scale, measuring cups and spoons, rolling pin if you are a baker. ~A Cook's Kitchen (necessary utensils) ~A Baker's Kitchen (necessary utensils) 16. A well stocked épicerie (pantry) with top-grade items (In TSLL's 2nd book, an entire chapter breaks down how to step into your kitchen and enjoy the everyday meals) 17. Tidy your kitchen as you go to make the space a place you enjoy stepping into each time. 18. Lengthen and deepen (full and satiating) your midday meal as much as possible. "This is a time for stepping away from your work — even if you are eating with your coworkers—and talking and thinking about something else . . . Whatever the company, the conversation is always pleasant and positive. And that, naturally, adds to the pleasure and anticipation of lunch. It is a real break from the rest of the day. Le déjeuner is not about using time, it is about taking time." 19. Enjoy a picnic and make it comfortable "I do love a picnic in the French style, which, of course, means comfort, comfort and more comfort. First of all, a French person is simply not going to eat on the ground. Although we might lounge around on a blanket later, it is much butter to eat sitting up." 20. Reserve Sunday to enjoy a big Sunday lunch, focusing on pleasure rather than obligation. 21. And grab that nap after the lengthy lunch to add regular moments of rejuventation . "Remind yourself that sometimes the best ideas and solutions rise to the surface when you're not thinking so hard." 22. Grab an afternoon break regularly with la pause gourmande to give yourself a treat - "a treat with a purpose" and offer the perfect solution to the "afternoon blahs". 23. Enjoy dinner in the dining room regularly and offer the opportunity for everyone to contribute (whether by setting the table, etc.) somehow. 24. Unwind after dinner with a little dessert treat (nothing too grand), and partaking in something you enjoy on your own or with others so that you can go to bed happy and content. 25. Share dinner with friends with a casual dinner party - only invite people you truly like and don't "overstretch yourself". ~10 Ideas Gleaned & Confirmed from My last Dinner Party, episode #235 26. Create a warm and inviting atmosphere, which means you need to be able to be relaxed and enjoy the evening as well. The goal: good food, good conversation and good fun. 27. Begin with apéritifs - small nibbles and drinks. 28. Have very small groups of flowers on the table to create a welcome, but not cumbersome table to sit around and enjoy the meal. 29. Add candles to the dinner table either in glass hurricanes, or small tea lights spread around the tabletop. 30. Add a low volume lyric-less music to the background, as the conversation amongst friends is the best music. 31. Enjoy cheese and a vinaigrette dressed salad course after the main course prior to dessert. 32. Add water to the meal to be enjoyed while enjoying glasses of wine with each course. 33. Dessert need not be homemade when you have a favorite local patisserie. 34. Savor the winding down at the end of the day and do not skip this important part of each day. Cultivate a pleasant ritual, perhaps a different one for each season. 35. Make lavender-scented linen water to add an inviting scent to your bed linens. 36. Everyone knows that nothing holds a creative back more than themselves. We all think that we're not good enough. We get jealous of others, and give up before we even try. We believe our skills just aren't good enough. STOP.  You're just letting your inner critic control your brain. You need to learn to acknowledge the critic, and see what it's really telling you. You can learn a lot about yourself from your inner critic, but you can't let it control your life. There are a few things that cause an inner critic to come out and take control: Envy of other Too much self criticism Not letting go of emotions Pressure from deadlines and our environment Fear It's easy to let our mind's get wrapped up in thoughts, emotions, and fears. In fact it's something we've done our entire lives. When you first learn to accept and acknowledge the inner critic, but not let it control your emotions and life it can be very unsettling. So many people get uncomfortable without it that they end up reverting right back to their old habits. And there’s only one way to avoid becoming frozen in place by fear—we must take action. Take action The only way to overcome fear is to cultivate the courage to take action. Some people think that courage means not having fear. But that’s not true. Courage isn’t about not having fear, it’s about feeling the fear and taking action anyway.—Click to tweet Benjamin Disraeli said:     “Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.” Love that. You know why the classic advice about “getting out of your comfort zone” will always be relevant? Because most people will choose to remain within their comfort-zones—working jobs they don’t love, staying in relationships with people they don’t love, and doing the same mundane things they don’t love—all in an effort to avoid the short-term discomfort of figuring out how to live a more fulfilling life. How much more could you get out of it if you took more action? I know it change my own life dramatically once I decided to STOP dreaming about my dreams, and to START taking action on them. We’re not even capable of creating a dream about something if we’re not capable of creating it in reality. Yes—dare to dream. But back it up, also, by daring to take action. Because the distance between our dreams and reality is bridged by developing the habit of doing—the habit, of taking action. Action always beats intention. What can you take action on? What’s one thing that you’ve been wanting to take action on in your life, but have been putting off over and over again for whatever reason? Is it a phone call? A job application? A serious conversation with someone that matters? If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to take action on something important, bear in mind that there is no such thing as a “right time”—circumstances will rarely align as we want them to align. Challenge yourself today, to choose ONE thing you’ve been wanting to take action on—then do it. Make the phone call. Start the application. Schedule the conversation. Solomon certainly experienced this also as he describes in one of the nuggets today. Before we get to that tidbit though let's look at a situation where… Doing Wrong is Fun – Proverbs [10:23]-27 You might be thinking, “Is Guthrie saying that doing wrong is fun?” That doesn't sound like something you would present…Well let's all face it, sometimes we are either tempted to or actually do wrong because it does appear to be fun. I am just as susceptible to believing this as anyone, so let's start with verse 23. 23Doing wrong is fun for a fool, but living wisely brings pleasure to the sensible. See I told you that doing wrong is fun…that is if we choose to be a fool. There are many activities that we may be tempted to participate in because they do look like it would be fun, but we must look at the long-term consequence of such actions. Sure eating pizza every night may appear to be fun or enjoyable, but what would that do to us physically long-term? How about innocent flirtation in the workplace. That may seem fun, but what are the potential long-term results? We could come up with dozens of scenarios, but I think you understand what I mean. To follow through doing short-term activities may appear to be fun without looking at the long-term results makes us a fool. In contrast to this is for us to live wisely which will bring long-term pleasure because we understand the consequences to making sensible and wise decisions. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/img_4105.jpg ()     24The fears of the wicked will be fulfilled; the hopes of the godly will be granted. Fear…It seems to be so rampant today, maybe it always has been. Even among Christ followers it seems to be that they are full of fear and worry...
