The Significance of Chapter 135 Certification for Nationwide Drone Delivery: Yariv Bash, CEO and Co-Founder of Flytrex

What is a Chapter 135 certification and how does it relate to drone deliveries? Yariv Bash is CEO and Co-founder of Flytrex, a drone delivery company that partners with retailers and restaurants to offer fast, safe and cost-effective airborne deliveries directly to customers' yards. Flytrex operates the largest backyard drone delivery service in the US, with delivery stations in North Carolina and Texas operating daily, and has signed agreements with several of the world's largest retail and restaurant chains.  Yariv has spearheaded Flytrex delivery services for 5 years.  Prior to Flytrex, Yariv was Founder and CEO of SpaceIL, a $100M Israeli non-profit organization that launched Beresheet, the first private interplanetary robotic mission to the Moon in 2019. In January, Flytrex announced its longtime partner Causey Aviation Unmanned was granted Standard Part 135 Air Carrier Certification from the FAA allowing Flytrex to operate and complete long-range on-demand commercial drone deliveries in the United States. This milestone comes after years of rigorous training and testing verifying that Flytrex's drone delivery service maintains the highest safety standards. With this part 135 Certification, Flytrex and CAU will further expand their drone delivery service nationwide – eventually offering food, drinks and other goods to the more than 82 million eligible back and front yards across the U.S. This approval has only been granted to a prestigious list of select companies – including Amazon Prime Air, Alphabet's Wing, UPS and Zipline – to date.   Since successfully launching the world's first fully autonomous urban drone delivery system in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 2017, Flytrex and Causey have been working closely with regulators to help ensure the highest safety standards in getting drone delivery off the ground. Together, they participated in the FAA's UAS Integration Pilot Program (IPP), which concluded in October 2020, as well as the FAA's subsequent initiative, BEYOND, working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to help tackle the remaining challenges of UAS integration.    In this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Yariv talks about the Chapter 135 certification process, how it differs from a Part 107 certification, and how Flytrex and Causey are now positioned to delivery restaurant orders to homes throughout the country.

Hello everybody and welcome back to The Tech Chef! This is your host, Skip Kimpel and I am here to take you on a ride of technology news related to the restaurant, hotel and hospitality industry.  Those of you returning, thank you for being a faithful fan and for those of you joining for the very first time, welcome! I am so glad you found this show.  It is exciting to see how this show has grown so rapidly as your weekly industry resource.  Again, those of you joining for the first time, please go ahead and hit that subscribe or follow button on your favorite podcast app or website. Exciting times we live in from a technology perspective and I certainly don't want you to miss a single episode. I hope you enjoyed my special https://skipkimpel.com/tech-chef/al-kimpel/ (Father's Day Episode) last week. I know it was a little out of the ordinary but, you know what, it was one of the most listened to episodes in the past couple of years! Today, as promised, I have a show for you that I have been waiting to share with you for quite a while. I was fortunate enough to get https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-thein-4707994/ (Ben Thein), COO from https://www.flytrex.com/ (Flytrex) on the show. You all know how much of a fan I am of drone deliveries and where the industry is headed with it as well as the complications of bringing it to fruition. Well, I thought it only appropriate to get the leading company in the restaurant drone delivery market on this show to share where the industry stands and where it is headed with this cutting-edge delivery method. https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-thein-4707994/ (Ben) is the COO of on-demand drone delivery company https://www.flytrex.com/ (Flytrex), helping spearhead the drone delivery revolution. https://www.flytrex.com/ (Flytrex) provides a direct-to-consumer autonomous drone delivery service that lets retailers and quick-service restaurants cater to a wider customer base with faster, safer and more economical on-demand deliveries than ever before.  In a nutshell, https://www.flytrex.com/ (Flytrex) is building the world's first drone-based delivery service – cutting delivery costs and times by an order of magnitude in an (almost) infinite market. This is the company behind the recent publicity you have seen including El Pollo Loco, Papa Johns, Brinker, Jersey Mikes, Walmart and many more. By the way, this company didn't just pop up out of nowhere, https://www.flytrex.com/ (Flytrex) Aviation Ltd was established in Israel in late 2013. I can't wait for the day where drone delivery is a widespread technology that will help elevate the customer experience and shorten the wait times for food, to go from restaurant to dinner table.  It is only a matter of time and it is companies like https://www.flytrex.com/ (Flytrex) that need to work with the FAA and complicated logistics to make this happen. It is coming folks, the question is when. Well, hello strangers and welcome back for another episode of The Tech Chef. This is your host, Skip Kimpel and every week, it is my goal to bring you the latest and greatest restaurant, hotel and hospitality technology insights from thought leaders across these industry segments. I do have to apologize as this is normally a weekly show but there have been so many shows lately that I have had to travel quite extensively which caused me to miss a few weeks in-between. Having said that, we are back on track again with a bunch of new episodes in the can and ready to go. If this is your first time listening, make sure you hit the subscribe button, so you don't miss a single episode and anybody who does that also gets to hear the show before anybody else knows about it.  I saw many of you at the NRA show and it was so good to see this show come back in such a strong way. The amount of technology that was present was also quite impressive. Unfortunately, out of all the buildings that the show was located, I didn't really get outside of the Tech Pavillion area.  I know I missed a lot but, then again, I was there for the technology. Today is a special episode as this Sunday is Father's day. I am fortunate enough to still be able to pick up the phone and talk my Dad whenever I want and ask him business advice as he had a successful 45 years in the work force and always has great advice for me. Recently, I was visiting him in Wisconsin and I came up with the idea to bring him on the show to talk about what it was like before technology and the transition into it over those many decades.  While you are not going to hear ANY hospitality technology talk on this show, my father is a great story teller and he walks us through his career, the patents he received and being an eye witness to the infancy stages of technology as we know it today.  How this show WILL relate to you is we will talk about forward thinking thought leadership, the importance of continuing to learn and educate yourself along the way and, most importantly, how to dress to impress. If I could only be as accomplished as my Dad when I finish my career. You know how many patents I have? Ah, that would be zero. It still fascinates me about everything he has done in his lifetime being 81 years young! I can't wait to share this episode with you as it is near and dear to me but also gives you a good insight into the DNA that makes me who I am today. Host Barbara Castiglia welcomed to The Main Course Yariv Bash, CEO of Flytrex, to discuss an innovation in food delivery that has long been on the radar, but whose growth has been exacerbated by the pandemic: drones. While his company was founded in 2013 under different circumstances, it only took until 2016 for Bash and his team to realize that drone deliveries were “gonna happen.”In 2017, Flytrex became the first company to provide a “working door delivery solution.” They started testing the technology in Iceland, and then the following year began working with the FAA to make the “pie in the sky” dream reach American's front yard. And if it is food delivery, it could be a literal pie coming in from a drone in the sky.“These are actually small airplanes,” Bash explained, “and they are being certified for commercial aviation. That is why it has been taking so long. The FAA is… putting in so much effort and resources to making sure the skies stay safe.”Essentially, the process would work like this: instead of a delivery person taking an order and driving it over to the address themselves, they would take the order to the nearest drone station and the drone would take the order to the customer. The drone does so by hovering over the address at 80 feet and lowering the package on a tether to its final destination.Bash argued that the drones would also be a “win-win” for restaurants, who struggle to make money from other delivery services that take a large surcharge from their orders. The drones, he said, are far more affordable. The system is also remarkable efficient at handling packages. “We've been delivering ice cream, eggs, coffee… anything that you can think of without a spill.”Bash also said it would benefit local communities. “In the end it's all about the local community, because everywhere we go we open up a local station, we hire local employees and we can support local restaurants, as well.”Flytrex's restaurant partners are currently, largely under non-disclosure agreements, but he said, “We love working with as many partners as we can once we open a station… to offer the largest variety and make sure that the station delivers as many deliveries as we can make a day.”

As we dive into this week's podcast we begin to tread in areas not often mentioned by the restaurant industry with Drone delivery leading the way and how Flytrex may be the next Uber for restaurant delivery. The real question will be the adoption curve of the digital consumer and if they have the uptake acceleration we have seen with online the third party. The likelihood that we see widespread drone delivery by 2025 is now a real possibility.C-Stores may have been the old school grab and go's of the past, but soon they will be forced and poised to enter the serious fray of fast-casual as they face an entirely new population of electric cars that are about to change the landscape of the American roadways. Fuel stations could be a thing of the past by 2030 and see the birth of a new model for C-store applications.Chipotle is often referred to as the rule breaker and the one that seems to always be out in front. In my book the Chipotle Effect, I predicted what we would see a new reality of the digital restaurant which is now becoming evident. Chipotle continues to separate from the pack as they enter into a fully digital and Chipotlane model - that in my opinion puts them on a course to 10K location by 2030. Lots to unpack in this episode as we also discuss what the tech stack might look like as we see these three key shifts moving the food consumer further and further from the dine-in restaurant. This episode is sponsored by Popmenu. In a recent viral video on TikTok, a Starbucks customer was waiting in a field for her Starbucks order to be delivered by drone. The video quickly garnered over 2.2 million views. (Video here https://bit.ly/30GQMCn). So I tracked down the company and invited their CEO onto the podcast to learn more. Yariv Bash, CEO, and Co-founder of Flytrex, a leading on-demand drone delivery service in the food and retail space, shares his take on the future of drone delivery. Drawing from his experience operating an on-demand drone delivery system since August 2017 and witnessing advancements in the space since Yariv discusses how technology and regulation have come together in recent years to create a viable framework for safe and secure drone innovation across applications. Flytrex expects to gain airworthiness certification from the FAA in the not-so-distant future -- once that happens, the sky's the limit. I learn more about Flytrex and its role in bringing about a future where drone delivery is the rule, not the exception.

In today's weekly wrap episode of The Restaurant Report, host Paul Barron looks at fast food embracing technology, explores the future of automation to address labor shortages and dives into Shake Shack's growth plans as well as Fat Brands newest acquisition. Three Key Points:Shake Shake's Q3 earnings call was released and chief executive officer Randy Garutti shared details on the expansion for 2022, expecting to develop forty-five to fifty company-operated stores and adding walk up windows, drive up, and drive-thrus to about twenty-five percent of them. The pressure of labor shortages increase as people continue to leave their jobs and autonomous drone delivery will come into play. Barron talks about Flytrex, Dominos, Nuro's latest development and more. McDonalds and Burger King are expanding with AI in the drive-thru side but Barron says that autonomous voice ordering will take over AI. Fat Brands announced the acquisition of Fazoli's for one hundred and thirty million dollars, Barron asks, “Is this a buy or a bust?” Fat Brands has also acquired Twin Peaks from Garnett Station Partners for three hundred million. Tweetable Quotes: “Most restaurant operators right now are still dealing with old tech and old formats when it comes to managing labor.” - Paul Barron “This is getting so dystopian, I feel like hospitality, where is it going?” - Paul Barron “You've got to figure out the solution that is going to deal with both autonomy speed technology and hospitality on the same side and that I think is going to be the holy grail for the restaurant industry.” - Paul Barron

To say that Yariv Bash has always aimed high would be a little bit too on the nose. Yariv is currently the co-founder and CEO of Flytrex Aviation, but he was also the first CEO of SpaceIL, a $100M Israeli non-profit organization that attempted to land the first private interplanetary robotic mission on the moon.   On this episode of Future of Tech, Yariv tells the story of the many obstacles he faced and “no's” he heard on the way to building that rocket to the moon and he discusses what he sees for the future of space travel and inspiring the next generation of young engineers. Plus, he dives into the work he's doing now with Flytrex and how drone technology is shaping up to change the way we live, have things delivered within a matter of minutes via drone, and much more. There are challenges, though, including how drones will be regulated and what kind of safety and security needs to be put in place before they can fly over saturated cities. But Flytrex is already hard at work on those challenges, and Yariv gives some clues about where we'll see drones overhead next and when. Enjoy this episode!   Main Takeaways:   Big Risk, Big Reward: Despite the many “no's” Yariv and his team received when building on their project to get to the moon, taking a big risk and going for it anyway proved to be the right move. They succeeded in a number of parameters and helped advance not just the Israli space program, but in inspiring a new generation of young people who will now pursue a career in science, engineering and technology. The Weight of It All: Drone technology is already being used to deliver things in many parts of the world. One of the key factors in improving and expanding drone delivery technology, though, is the weight of the packages being delivered. Drones are designed to be lightweight and easy to maneuver, so delivering heavy objects is currently out of the question. And that's just one of the challenges Flytrex is working on. Others include regulations, delivery destinations in major cities and skyscrapers, and safety and security. It's a Bird, It's a Plane!: Looking overhead you might start to see drones in more unexpected places, including in the world of agriculture. Automated drone technology iis perfect for fertilizing or spraying fields in order to keep the crops healthy. Drones can and have also been used for things like firefighting and reconnaissance. --- Future of Tech is brought to you by Amdocs Tech. Library Drone Delivery

About the 'T' in STEM

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2020 16:56

The Library of the Future In my quest to learn more and more about drone business models, I came across an interesting article by Francis Nath from the Rain Forest Research Institute in India. Library drone delivery is not something I’ve seen much in the drone blogs I read or even in the scholarly papers I read about drone technology and business. So, I wanted to provide a summary of the article as well as provide a little of my own opinions and input on the article. Over the past several years, drone technology has become much more commercialized and as a result, so many creative technology professionals and entrepreneurs are looking for ways to create scalable businesses around this technology. Some current sources of revenue for drone operators include filming video and movies, aerial photography, search and rescue operations, crop monitoring services, and meteorological services. As more and more business leaders become more familiar with this technology, many businesses are moving their drone services in-house. In the article Library drone delivery programme: A study, Nath provides a framework for understanding how drone technology can be integrated into library resources for the community. Since people today are busier than every (well, except for right now in during the quarantine!), many don’t have the time to visit their libraries to use the resources available to them. What if your local library offered drone delivery services? Would you use it? Delivery drones could deliver books wherever and whenever a patron needs the resources, just by using their smartphones. Worldwide, there are already a few drone delivery services up and running such as FlyTrex in Israel. The FAA is working with several drone delivery companies in the US, including Amazon Air. One way libraries can bring drone technology into it’s offerings is to provide workshops and curriculum to the community of how to fly, code, and build drones. Drones will (and already have) created opportunities around content creation and research, therefore more libraries should be using this emerging technology. In densely-populated areas, libraries are usually centrally-located. Urban expansion, traffic, complicated bus schedules, and hectic schedules often prevent people from using the library. To encourage more library use, delivery drones could deliver 2-5 books at one time the patron’s doorstep or right to their hands, regardless of location using the GPS technology in their phones. In 2018, the cost of a single delivery drone was $5,000. Add on the cost of software and extending the library’s Integrated Library Management System, there does need to be an investment and long-term commitment to implementing a drone program in a library. Should a library bring drone delivery to their available resources, here’s how it might work: The library patron use the library app to make a selection. The patron’s physical location would be found using the phone’s GPS.The library receives the request and staff retrieve and check-out the documents (wouldn’t it be cool to have an automated robot retrieve the books?) Staff hands over to drone-handling staff to safely pack the droneStaff in the Ground Control Center fly the drone to deliver the books and fly back Library Drone Delivery Considerations As with creating anything new, there are some important points to consider. Why is library drone delivery necessary? What pain-point is this solving?Technical requirements of the drone, ILMS, maintenance, data storage should all be clearly documented.A site analysis should be conducted to determine any safety hazards, including an airspace analysis. How, when, and where will the drone delivery services be tested. What constitutes success? The one question I always like to add in is, “So what?” It really helps you get past the “this would be a really cool thing to do” and get more into the nitty gritty of the problem you’re trying to solve.

In this episode we speak with Yariv Bash, co-founder and CEO of Flytrex, a leading consumer drone company and founder of Space IL - an Israeli non-profit that in December 2018 will launch a spaceship to the moon making Israel the 4th nation to land a spaceship on the moon. Yariv is always in motion, he always has something he’s working on, he’s persistent and an endless optimist (which is probably his superpower). He’s taken on the most ambitious projects with a goal of influencing entire generations and making a dent in the world. He lives to solve problems and he believes he can take on almost anything , especially if it’s a challenge that was solved before. With respect to landing a spaceship on the moon, I asked him, how did you gain that confidence? How did you know? I mean you must have had some doubts.. His answer teaches a lot of his relentless mindset “So, it’s a problem that has been solved on a bigger scale with more funds nonetheless, but still, the first time it was solved was back in the sixties...” I interrupt “yeah, solved by countries” but he doesn’t get confused “you know, the difference between individuals and countries is always shrinking” We learned that one of the keys to success is to believe to the verge of stupidity and despite other people’s skepticism BUT to always validate and have a plan b (and c, and d) “I found myself surrounded by people who don’t think anything can stop them”. What a magnificent state of mind. We know we’re going to work on this attitude. We hope listening to him will help you too.
