Time – My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator“.
Send us a textGood evening everyone. It's evening as I record this special solo episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast. Why do a solo episode? Good Question. I have been super busy taking care of my wife who had a total knee replacement surgery a couple of days ago. She's a tough cookie but needs a little help from me and that has put most things on the back-burner, including this podcast. So, I thought it would be a good idea to answer some questions from the Cops and Writers Facebook group with stories from my career in law enforcement. In today's episode we discuss: · The impending release of The Good Collar. Getting the cover to conform with Amazon, and releasing the paperback, then the hardcover, and then the Kindle version very soon!! Some reviews have already come out on Goodreads, with an average of 4.5! For Goodreads that is awesome! Thanks to everyone who was a beta and ARC reader!· Fred Snyder asks: Current day United States. How much/what kind of paperwork is involved if a Federal officer (FBI, USSS, DHS) draws his/her gun? Doesn't fire it, just draws it. · Connie Albus asks: A husband and wife are found dead, both with bullet wounds but the coroner is not sure if the husband murdered his wife then committed suicide due to the angle of the bullet wounds on him, or if it was a double murder. On the coroner's report would it show hers as "homicide" and his as "homicide/suicide"? or other wording? Thanks for the help. (story takes place in the USA) _(added the remains were found in a burned building). Rich Rybicki and Scott Morales did a great job answering and I added that we never assume anything, it's a double homicide until it isn't. The totality of the circumstances comes into play here. Were there any 911/DV calls at the address? Did they find a gun, if so, where was it? Is there a motive, such as an impending divorce or other problems? Any history of calls of one of them having a mental illness crisis? Was there a note? There was a fire, so that might be tricky. Witness statements or video? · Allison Holland-Ray asks: In modern times, Portland, Maine, I have a suspect who's pointing his gun at two bystanders, while three officers all point their weapons at him. What is the protocol for getting him to drop his weapon? Right now, I have written that the officers are talking to him and they put their weapons down to show they are willing to talk.

The Persuasion Occasion brings together a wide range of experts to talk with David Biderman and Jasmine Wetherell, a boomer and a millennial, about how to be more persuasive. In our first episode, we welcome Gary Noesner, who shares insights from his career as the lead negotiator with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Gary tells us how his strategy of patience and empathy was overruled in the Waco negotiations with the Branch Davidians, leading to disastrous consequences. He also discusses the importance of self-control and emotional regulation in any negotiation and illustrates how emotions can affect rational thinking and behavior. Gary Noesner retired from the FBI in 2003, following a 30-year career as an investigator, instructor, and negotiator. He retired as the chief of the FBI's Crisis Negotiation Unit, Critical Incident Response Group, the first person to hold that position. He then served as a senior vice president with Control Risks, a global risk and strategic consulting firm, assisting clients in managing overseas kidnapping incidents. Gary has authored a book about his FBI negotiation career, Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator.

How can you link hostage negotiating with building better relationships with your family, spouse/partner, and kids? How can you keep your emotions in check when situations become intense? Gary Noesner spent over 30 years in the FBI, ten of which were as the Chief Crisis Negotiator. A few of you may know Gary from the Netflix series Waco, as Gary was one of the negotiators between the FBI/ATF and religious cult, the Branch Davidians, in Waco, TX. From dealing with highly intense situations, Gary has turned his experience and expertise into helping people build better relationships through active listening. The ability to respond to someone shows that you were indeed listening. Gary uses M&M candy on how to do this. Consider that in every conversation you have with somebody, the chocolate center is the story, what are they trying to tell you, while the outer shell of the candy is the reflection of emotion, how are they feeling. From Gary's perspective, the cornerstone of being a good listener and communicator is self-control. Think of a teeter-totter; when emotions are high, our rational behavior goes down. So, we must focus on our emotions and lower our temperature when situations become tense. Please enjoy my conversation with Gary Noesner. #MillenniumLive is extremely honored to have retired Chief, FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit, Gary Noesner, who was the first person to hold that position. Gary spent thirty years working for the FBI. His book, Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator, recounts some of the many crisis situations he negotiated including right-wing militia standoffs, airplane hijackings, religious zealot sieges, terrorist embassy takeovers, and over 120 overseas kidnapping cases involving American citizens. Gary's most notable experience was negotiating with David Koresh in Waco, where his involvement as a negotiator in this crisis would change the FBI forever. Millennium Alliance Co-Founder, Alex Sobol, asks Gary about his upbrining and early years of his life, his process of negotiating with Koresh, and his thoughts on the world today. Gary will be keynoting the Transformational CISO Assembly at the Four Season Denver, November 2nd.
Gary Noesner retired from the FBI in 2003 following a 30 year career as an investigator, instructor, and negotiator. During that time he was heavily involved in numerous crisis incidents covering prison riots, right-wing militia standoffs, religious zealot sieges, terrorist embassy takeovers, airplane hijackings, and over 120 overseas kidnapping cases involving American citizens and the siege at Waco. He is also author of the book Stalling for Time. In this episode we cover: How time is a negotiator's friend and some tactics to increase the time you have What to do when you have intense scrutiny on your actions (in Gary's case, his negotiations were covered by the press) How to use creative solutions in a negotiation (Why Gary sent a photo of his wife and family to a man who was holding 35 people hostage) Why navigating internal politics is key to the success of your external negotiations You can learn more about Gary's work here: https://garynoesner.com/ Subscribe to my substack to never miss an episode: https://asadbadruddin.substack.com/
We welcome our very first guest, retired Chief, FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit, Gary Noesner. Noesner worked for the FBI for more than 30 years as an investigator and instructor. As a hostage negotiator, he defused prison riots, government standoffs with right-wing militias, overseas kidnappings, and terrorist embassy takeovers. His career trajectory coincided with many significant events in the evolution of hostage negotiation at the FBI. In 2010, Noesner released Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator, detailing his time working at the bureau. In the memoir, he wrote about the various standoffs he has been involved in, including Waco – his involvement as a negotiator in this crisis would change the FBI forever. In this episode, we uncover The Dirt on Gary. We explore the development of the FBI Negotiation Unit. Skills to lower emotional confrontation, whether in a crisis or at home. The art of stalling for time and the importance of voice, "I would ask, what did we say that made you come out? Because we try to learn from these cases. And the answer was always the same. It was always, I don't remember what you said, but I liked the way you said it. It's really a powerful concept to consider that the voice, the projection of sincerity may be far more important than the actual words." The level of the emotional and mental toll that years in the bureau have taken and the cases that never leave him. His shortest negotiation and his oddest request from a perpetrator. And more importantly, the one thing he hoards. Selected Links from the Episode Connect with Gary: Website | Order Book | Want more Body To Burial? Meet Gary Noesner - author, instructor, investigator, and FBI negotiator. Gary served as the lead hostage negotiator during the first 25 days of the 51-day siege in Waco TX. His book Stalling for Time, My life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator became the framework with the Netflix mini-series WACO. In his words, "I've talked about WACO more in the past couple of months than in my entire career, but if you don't know history you're destined to repeat it." We explore what it feels like to be negotiating relationships from every angle in crisis situations, and how the lessons from these experiences can apply to everyday life. There were so many great parts of this conversation, but my favorite takeaway is this: The best answer you can give is the most truthful - even if it's, "I don't know." How does increased power impact human minds? It's almost not someone's fault if empathy wanes while power accumulates. In fact, it's basically inevitable. Joe Smarro, one of the subjects of the HBO documentary, "Crisis Cops: Ernie and Joe," is an exception to the rule. Joe is a police officer and trainer who gives a Master Class in how to sidestep fate when encountering people in crisis. We hear a few fugues from Joe illustrating what it's like to be a cop in these situations. And we give it the post-fugue treatment with inner voice, helping us to understand the cognitive effects of power and how to avoid unnecessary conflict.Join us for the third and final part of this series on fate and biology. --Credits:Written and produced by Gabriel Berezin.Original music and sound design by Grant Zubritsky. In this episode, your host of Inspire Us, former hostage negotiator J. Paul Nadeau, chats with retired FBI agent and fellow hostage negotiator Gary Noesner. Gary reviews his role as one of the hostage negotiators involved in the tragic 1993 Waco Texas siege, that lasted 52 days involving David Koresh and members of the Branch Davidians. The outcome was tragic: 76 members of the Branch Davidians died in that crisis, and this event stresses the extreme importance of teams working together, whether within an organization or with others outside their organization. The lessons Gary shares in this episode are priceless. He also shares how this case impacted him and how he got through. Gary has an impressive background, to say the least. He served more than 30 years as an FBI agent, and 26 of those years were served as a special agent. In his career, he's investigated and negotiated numerous crisis incidents such as prison riots, right-wing militia standoffs, terrorist embassy takeovers, airplane high jackings, and over 120 overseas kidnapping cases involving American citizens. Gary continues to consult independently and has appeared on many television news broadcasts, documentaries, and has been featured in many publications. His book, “Stalling for time – my life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator” is what inspired the popular TV mini-series, "Waco," now available on Netflix. In this episode, Gary also shares his approach on how to avoid and resolve conflict in these troubling times, as well as how to truly connect with others to develop relationships of mutual respect and trust.
