This week on APTN News InFocus, host Cierra Bettens examines the mercury crisis in Grassy Narrows and the community's ongoing fight for justice and healing. In the 1960s and '70s, the Dryden paper mill dumped nearly nine tonnes of mercury into the English-Wabigoon River system, devastating the downstream community of Grassy Narrows. Today, an estimated 90 per cent of the community has symptoms of mercury poisoning. On March 5, officials gathered for the ground breaking of a long-awaited health centre dedicated to mercury poisoning care—five years after the deal to build it was signed. APTN Investigates reporter Brittany Guyot joins us to discuss her documentary Something in the Water, the ongoing impact of mercury poisoning, and the community's fight for accountability. • • • APTN National News, our stories told our way. Send us a textOn this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Mojola Omole and Dr. Blair Bigham explore the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance and how shorter courses of antibiotics are reshaping prescribing practices. The conversation builds on insights from the CMAJ practice article “Five things to know about shorter courses of antibiotics” co-authored by Dr. Maria Ivankovic, an emergency physician at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto.Dr. Ivankovic explains why shorter courses of antibiotics are as effective as longer ones for many common infections and how this approach can reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance and adverse effects for patients. She highlights key conditions with strong evidence for shorter durations and discusses practical strategies for implementing these changes in practice.Dr. Lynora Saxinger, an infectious diseases specialist and professor of medicine at the University of Alberta, broadens the discussion by examining the current state of antimicrobial resistance in Canada and globally. She explores the drivers of resistance, including unnecessary and inappropriate antibiotic use. Dr. Saxinger introduces the concept of the antibiotic footprint as an analogue to the carbon footprint, encouraging physicians to consider the collective impact of their prescribing decisions. This episode provides actionable advice for physicians looking to balance patient care with stewardship practices, helping to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations. To learn more about exciting physician careers from our sponsor, Vancouver Coastal Health, visit vch.ca/jobyouwantJoin us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. A 24-hour fully-serviced drop-in mental health centre is being proposed for Shannon. The suggestion comes from Independent local election hopeful Pat Barry who's described the ongoing mental health crisis in Clare as well as nationwide as "appalling". Shannon's Hope Café played host to its first mental health conference in January where Azim Khamisa, who's been celebrated by the Dalai Lama, Al Gore and Bill Clinton, as well as renowned psychotherapist Robert Carley, were guest speakers. Long-time Shannon resident Barry, who was one of the event's organisers, insists the town needs a full-time accessible mental health service.

Kicking off the three-part series ‘'Social Protection for Prevention of and Response to Gender-Based Violence'', this episode presents a deep dive into what we know about the impacts of social protection on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and some of the remaining knowledge gaps. We look at economic empowerment programmes and how they can help reduce economic stress and challenge gender norms that often drive violence in community settings. Drawing from the available evidence, our guests were also invited to reflect on both the positive pathways through which social protection can contribute to reducing intimate partner violence (IPV) and the possibility of it introducing risks of increased violence. Finally, as some food for thought, what would a feminist social protection policy look like? Our guests for this episode: Ana Maria Buller, Associate Professor in Social Sciences and Director of the Gender Violence and Health Centre, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Lusajo Kajula, Principal Investigator, UNICEF Office of Research - Innocenti Amber Peterman, Research Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill For our ‘Quick Wins' segment, Wessel van den Berg (MenCare Officer at Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice) talks about ways to engage men in the dialogue around gender norms and roles as part of a gender transformative approach. What does this entail for social protection? The ‘'Social Protection for Prevention of and Response to Gender-Based Violence'' series is produced by socialprotection.org and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), with the support from UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Danielle, from The Single Truth podcast, and I, are back with the wonderfully insightful Yogi Amrit Desai (affectionately known as Gurudev) for a discussion on how to have perfect relationships. We delve deep into what is needed to achieve this with help from Gurudev's book 'The Yoga of Relationships' and also go through some real-life examples that you can apply to your own life.Gurudev also takes us through a brilliant meditation which is certainly worth doing at the end! I really enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too.Key Takeaways:Once you have the power to accept yourself as you are, you have the power to accept others as they are.Often in relationships, people look for others to provide what they are lacking in themselves. You will not find it because the problem is hidden inside you! Most people interact with the present through the eyes of their past. It's important to let go of the past and your 'toxic memory stress centre' in order to live in the present moment and be truly happy. We can get so caught up in finding the right partner that we forget to be the right partner. You don't have to be perfect in self-acceptance all the time! As long as you have the intention, practice is key.No one can control the thinking of others! So sit back, enjoy with an open mind - Stay Curious, and Stay Free and, very importantly, please do let us know what you think in the comments or the reviews. Thank you.
