How do law firms choose the right technology? Its a conundrum many law firms face and with so much technology available to them, how can they be sure they're selecting the right option for them? Chris Williams of Novus Strategy & Consulting joins the Today's Conveyancer podcast to share his thoughts and insight on the topic; borne out of his experience working across the property transaction, and notably with lenders in recent years. In simple terms, he says firms should focus on solutions which align with their strategy, client needs, and operational goals. And when outlining what strategy firm's might adopt, Chris adds strategy is "where you play and how you win."But in the current technology climate, where there seems to be rapid change, and moving goalposts if you take the example of settlement where the future remains uncertain; how do firms know if they're "winning"? And how can they prepare for something that may or may not happen? There is lots of time to prepare, says Chris. The market does not move quickly and we can see what is coming down the track. The key is to work with vendors and partners who can provide interoperability and scalability for long term successAlongside settlement, which is one discussion point to consider, Chris adds there is an evolution of the mortgage process coming; which in turn is going to drive some of the work around data standardisation and horizontal data integration; the idea that in each of the existing verticals (lending, brokering, estate agency and conveyancing) there is significant progress on digitisation and the next step is to bring that all together and create greater connectivity throughout the course of the transaction. Drawing on the experience of the retail sector, which went through its own digital (r)evolution, in Chris's view the individual sections of the market are reaching digital maturity to enable the connectivity currently missing to develop and sees the home moving process could look very different in just a few years' time. Sue Smith is the Vice President for Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Sciences at Ivy Tech Community College - Indiana's largest post-secondary institution and the largest singly-accredited community college in the U.S. With 19 campuses and 41 sites, her job is to ensure there's a pipeline of skilled workers for industrial employers all over the state. In her efforts to keep Ivy Tech's manufacturing programs current with industry trends, she's helped launch new degrees and certificate programs that are actually ahead of the game.Graduates are entering the workforce with skills in automation, autonomous systems, digital integration and smart manufacturing that actually enable them to lead their company from Industry 3.0 to Industry 4.0.In this episode, Sue shares her experiences leading one of the most advanced technical education programs in the country.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:For the first time, education is ahead of industry when it comes to technology adoption: While the big brands have entered Industry 4.0 already, most manufacturers are still in Industry 3.0. For the first time, technical education institutions that have embraced smart manufacturing are ahead of their local employers. This is great news for the workforce, as graduates from these programs can help lead their companies into the future.Industry certifications should be built into every technical education program: When certifications are built and backed by employers, students earning them have verified proof of skills. It's a competency-based approach to education that the workforce today needs. It's also a great tool to create standardized, flexible pathways when expanding and articulating programs.Want to stay on-pace with emerging technologies? Find ways to integrate them into your existing programs: Semiconductors, electric vehicles and battery manufacturing are just three emerging technologies the country has its eyes on. To make sure we don't fall behind, education should find ways to crosswalk competencies between traditional mechatronics and these technologies, then add curriculum, equipment and certifications to teach the unique aspects of each technology. The same can be said for autonomous systems, AI, etc.Resources Mentioned in this EpisodeLearn more about Ivy Tech's Smart Manufacturing and Digital Integration DegreeVisit the Smart Automation Certification Alliance siteLearn more about the Automation Leadership Degree at UW-StoutLearn more about Ivy Tech Community CollegeConnect with Ivy Tech online:Twitter | LinkedIn | Facebook | Instagram | YouTubeVisit episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/smith/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Adam’s 80/20 rule: 80% of your time listening, 20% posting.[30:40] Rapid Fire: Quick Questions and Fast Answers with Adam[33:45] How does Adam stay current in digital?[35:50] “Key” Takeaways with Kathy and GinoLinks & Resources:Read Google’s ZMOT (Zero Moment of Truth) Handbook & StudyFollow Adam's favorite digital marketing experts on Twitter: Danny Sullivan @dannysullivan, Jason Falls @jasonfallsConnect with Adam on LinkedInBuy Adam’s Book, "Hopeful to Hired."Kathy & Gino's "Key" Takeaways:When getting into digital jump in and trust your gut but expect to learn on the fly. Adam did this in the early days of digital. Understand that you’ll probably make mistakes because digital moves so fast. Don’t get discouraged, keep persevering. Kathy & Gino reflect on how much digital has evolved in the past 20 years: Websites used to be more like online business cards, now they are one-stop ecommerce stores where you can search for, compare, and buy products. The customer’s sales journey has completely changed, and our strategies must change along with them. Adam’s favorite digital channel is Search. In most digital channels you’re trying to be as relevant as possible but making sure that you’re not getting in the way of the customer, including paid and targeted advertising. Search is really the only channel where we can get your message in front of customers at the moment they’ve asked for it. Building strong SEO presence can help marketers and businesses reach and understand their customers better. The importance of studying search data almost like an anthropologist is a best practice for Adam. Your content must be timely, relevant, and meaningful. Right message, right time for the right person. The right time is when a customer is asking for a message. Ads can get really targeted with today’s digital technology, and that’s a good way to have a better chance of reaching audience—but search is like a sledgehammer hitting right on that target. Adam’s P.O.E.M. acronym stands for “paid, owned and earned media.” Paid media is the paid online advertising, owned media is any digital property or channel a company owns/runs, and earned media used to be on PR side (printed newspaper), but social has turned this on its head, and earned media is now like online "word of mouth", including organic search. We must have an appreciation for the entire customer funnel, far before it turns into a sale or conversion. Each touchpoint is important and can contribute to the end goal. “Assisted Conversion” is the idea that your digital “foot traffic” came from another source or an accumulation of sources – which all relates back to having a unified omnichannel marketing strategy. The last click that led to a sale shouldn’t always get all of the attention! The 80/20 Rule: Spend 80% of your time listening and 20% posting. You have to know where your customers hang out, how they behave and what they care about before you can craft effective content that reaches them. Adam believes listening to and studying Search data—using free tools like Google Analytics—is the biggest catalyst for conversion growth.

Adam Toporek, an internationally-recognized customer service expert, keynote speaker, and frontline trainer, talks to Engati on ‘Winning with Experience'. He talks about how technology and Artificial Intelligence can be leveraged to create personalized customer experiences at scale. Adam speaks about the fact that customers are irrational creatures and that businesses need to take this into consideration while creating customer journeys. Customers don't buy with logic. They buy with emotion and then try to use logic to justify their purchases. He also tells us that we should be focusing on Digital Integration rather than Digital Transformation. Transformation implies that we're going to go completely digital. Integration is more realistic in the sense that we will have humans working in collaboration with digital systems. The human element is integrated within the digital experience.
Following the arrival of large numbers of migrants and asylum seekers in Europe from 2015 onwards, many non-traditional actors—from tech start-ups to social enterprises—have pioneered innovative solutions to foster the social and economic inclusion of newcomers. In the context of this experimentation, business has played a fundamental role, with companies on both sides of the Atlantic leveraging their potential as employers, donors, and partners in innovative alliances. This two-day conference reflected on how innovative initiatives for refugee inclusion can grow beyond pockets of good practice and inspire large-scale, long-term change. The event brought together a diverse group of public officials, business leaders, service designers, social entrepreneurs, civil society organisations, and refugee initiatives from Europe, the United States, and Canada. This recording includes: Welcoming remarks from: Adam Shub, Chargé d’Affaires, U.S. Mission to the EU Daniel J. Costello, Ambassador of Canada to the EU Elizabeth Collett, Director, Migration Policy Institute Europe Cristian Pirvulescu, President of the Permanent Study Group on Immigration and Integration, European Economic and Social Committee Opening speech by Yara Al Adib, Design Consultant and Entrepreneur, From Syria with Love, Belgium Panel session: “How the field has matured: A progress report, one year on” Chair: Tamim Nashed, Policy Officer on Refugee Inclusion, European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) Eric Young, The Social Projects Studio/Distinguished Visiting Professor of Social Innovation at Ryerson University, Canada Luisa Seiler, Co-founder and Director, SINGA Deutschland, Germany Mireia Nadal Chiva, Head of Community Development, ReDI School for Digital Integration, Germany

[Full disclosure: I have written about polio eradication for Rotarian Magazine.] Riechert, a past Rotary Peace Fellow, moved to Berlin in 2012 to set up the Berlin Peace Innovation Lab in collaboration with Stanford University. When she observed what ultimately became 1.1 million asylum seekers, mostly from Syria, she saw an opportunity. ”Currently, there are 43,000 open jobs in IT in Germany,” she says. John Hewko, general secretary of Rotary International, who spent much of his career in Europe, commenting on the refugee situation there, says, “If we don’t act now to build the conditions for sustainable peace, then the likelihood of events that undermine it, such as profound social instability, a lack of integration of migrant populations into their new host countries, and failures of national governance will only increase.” So, she created a coding school called ReDI School of Digital Integration to train refugees to fill some of those jobs. Partnering with German companies, including Daimler AG, she is providing training in coding languages “like Ruby on Rails, CSS, HTML, Python” along with “skills like entrepreneurship and business intelligence,” she says. --------------------- Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2aN2Fvd.
