Hello listeners! Here is a new episode where we talk about feminism at length… who's surprised? But before we get into the feminism of it all, we discuss various facets and corners in the world of media piracy and consuming digital content in response to a listener email. We continue to wonder how observations and opinions that lead us to receive so much internet hate are now popular takes to have and peddle out again and again. We also talk about at length the importance of feminism and learning from various branches of feminism. TLDR: We are communists and we are feminists but that does not make us exclusively marxist-feminists. We kinda cover all the bases on women's issues for this episode. Let us know what you think by emailing or DMing us. For the media this episode, we discuss our memory of and thoughts on Jen Beagin's novel Big Swiss. Renaissance read it just a couple months before the episode recording and l Sunny read a couple years ago. Has our love for unhinged lesbians struck again? Listen to find out!At the end of the episode Sunny recommends Come And Get It by Kiley Reid and Renaissance recommends the seminal documentary Paris is Burning (1990). Listen to the end of the episode to hear our pitches. Thank you again for listening!

It's Not What It Seems with Doug Vigliotti

In this episode of the Books for Men podcast, host Douglas Vigliotti expresses gratitude to listeners for supporting the show and spreading the word about it. He mentions that he plans to bring back interviews later in the year and introduces the concept of "Special Edition” episodes that will focus on art, entertainment, and books. Vigliotti then provides a recap of the books featured in February 2024. The first nonfiction book discussed is The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli, which simplifies the complex topic of time and offers philosophical musings. The second nonfiction book is Outlive by Peter Attia, which explores a proactive approach to healthcare and longevity. The one work of fiction for the month was Big Swiss by Jen Beagin, a quirky novel that delves into themes of trauma, sexuality, and accountability. Vigliotti reflects on the genre of women's fiction and its historical context. He concludes with a reminder to connect with him on Instagram @douglasvigliotti, and provides information on how to access episode transcripts and the monthly newsletter. If you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the podcast. It's Not What It Seems with Doug Vigliotti

In this episode of the Books for Men podcast, host Douglas Vigliotti introduces Big Swiss by Jen Beagin. He describes the book as a literary novel that falls under women's fiction, a genre that centers around female life experiences and is marketed toward female readers. Vigliotti believes the lack of a genre called “men's fiction” is a market effect over time—as in, men don't read fiction today. He suggests that if a genre existed using the same criteria as women's fiction, it may encourage more men to read fiction. Vigliotti describes Big Swiss as odd, funny, and cult-like in its feel—citing that's what he loves most about it. The story follows a disenchanted transcriptionist for a sex therapist who writes letters to her deceased mother and becomes involved with one of her employer's patients, a repressed Swiss woman who is much younger and married. The novel explores themes of trauma, sexuality, and accountability. Vigliotti also mentions the inclusion of many cultural touchpoints and a unique portrayal of a Boston accent. He encourages listeners to share the podcast and connect with him on Instagram @douglasvigliotti or via BooksforMen.org.If you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the podcast. In this episode, we dive into this kooky and wild adventure! “Big Swiss,” by Jen Beagin, is the story of Greta, a woman living in a small town and working as a transcriber. A local sex therapist asks her to transcribe sessions with his local patients and inevitably, Greta recognizes one of these voices while at the dog park. The voice belongs to none other than “Big Swiss.” “Big Swiss,” aka Flavia, and Greta get caught up in an affair that will keep you turning pages late into the night. This is a story about companionship, trauma, starting a new chapter, and the ways in which we build our lives according to our fears. With this LGBTQ+ book, we wanted to focus on queer winemakers. In a past episode, we featured the wife duo of Camins 2 Dreams, so we were pleased to find another partner duo in love at Birdhorse Wines. To celebrate this queer story, we chose their rosé from the 2023 Pride Pack.

Happy pride month! The hot takes for this episode feature a very belated discussion on the Matty Healy x Taylor Swift controversy, our response to a listener's questioning of their own identity as a lesbian, and offering advice on reading difficult texts— basically how to read theory!!! We also discuss our perspectives as POC on the constant presence of white people's racism, with Renaissance's unique view as someone growing up surrounded by white family members. In response to another hot take, we discuss (in the vein of Taylor's dalliances with Matty Healy) the ethics of consuming problematic artists' art— especially as it relates pop music and the film industry and how much whose art you consume reflects your politics. When Woody Allen gets brought up, Sunny reads an excerpt from the novel Post-traumatic by Chantal V. Johnson that features a conversation at a dinner party about discourse surrounding consuming the art of known abusers and rapists. For the shared media analysis portion of this episode, we list and discuss every piece of media present in our queer American literature syllabi, ranging from Willa Cather to Carmen Maria Machado, while also discussing pieces of media such as Audre Lorde's essay collection Sister Outsider, the documentary on depicting transness in Hollywood called Disclosure, and much much more. Michael Bronski's A Queer History of the United States made up many of Sunny's assigned readings for class, and (spoiler alert!!!) very bad lectures and discussions were had in Renaissance's class. At the end of the episode, Renaissance recommends the early 2000s lesbian rom-com Kissing Jessica Stein (2001), and Sunny jointly recommends the film Daisies (1966) and the Jen Beagin novel Big Swiss. The Readheads Book Club

Happy April! This month we are recapping and discussing one of our most polarizing books yet, Big Swiss by Jen Beagin. This book was a Dana's choice and it was very Dana's choice-y. The hosts are debating whether or not this was the best book they've ever read or the worst. As always, they're answering your questions and casting a potential Hollywood version of this book. The next book is Margo's choice and she chose The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis. The overall Readheads rating for Big Swiss is 3.375. Hello Readheads! This month we are recapping and discussing (at length) The Measure by Nikki Erlick - technically a Becky's choice. The Measure has been billed as the perfect book for book clubs and this episode proves that to be correct. The book asks so many pertinent questions plus our community submitted so many great questions to be answered as well! We had a great time recording this episode and we want to hear what you thought of the book. Leave a comment on our Instagram page @thereadheads to let us know your thoughts. The next book is Dana's choice and she chose Big Swiss by Jen Beagin. The overall Readheads rating for The Measure is 4.025.

This week filmmaker and comedian Sarah Little  journeys 'Into The Wikiverse' and we get Jen Beagin's first novel, "Pretend I'm Dead".  There is no synopsis in the article, so we judge a book by it's cover and try to come up with possible themes of what this novel is about.
