In 2018, Daniel Welch made a life-altering decision. After a decade in investment banking, working on high-profile IPOs and M&A deals at Morgan Stanley, Welch found himself at a crossroads. The birth of his daughter and a health scare involving his father led him to question the career path he was on. “I was mentally stimulated by the work, but it didn't align with my personal values,” Welch reflects. Burnt out and seeking more purpose, he left the corporate finance world to pursue mission-driven opportunities in the health and wellness sector.Welch's career pivot first brought him to Sonos, where he helped lead the company through its IPO. He later transitioned to Oura, the maker of the Oura Ring, guiding the company through a critical growth stage. These experiences solidified his desire to combine financial expertise with personal passion. In 2022, Welch found his ideal role as CFO of Kate Farms, a plant-based medical nutrition company revolutionizing the field. Kate Farms focuses on providing organic, plant-based nutrition products, free of common allergens and designed to improve health outcomes for patients in medical need. Its mission resonated deeply with Welch's personal health journey, which began with his transition to a plant-based diet.Backed by investors like Goldman Sachs Private Equity and Novo Holdings, Kate Farms continues to grow its presence in hospitals and home care systems across the U.S., making Welch's leadership integral to the company's scaling efforts. His career transformation highlights how purpose and profit can intersect when leadership is guided by personal values.

After surviving the crash at just 12 years old, he suffered from depression and was homeless by 27. Laver had a premonition that the plane would crash and broke his tennis rackets to try to get out of going to his tennis competition. But his dad said they were going anyway. Laver is the Founder and CEO of Lucky Energy Drink and founder of Kate's Farm ( the #1 recommended plant-based tube feeding formula) He eventually found the love of his life, Michelle, but during the premature birth of their first child, Kate, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and would need a feeding tube for nourishment. Laver founded Kate Farms to save her life. It is used in hospitals across America to save children from not thriving on previous formulas. In thinking about his next chapter, Laver landed on creating a cleaner alternative to the energy drinks on the market. The original name Lucky F*ck comes from a bracelet his son gave him, saying that through everything, his father was really a Lucky F*ck. He launched the company to inspire people to persevere and keep going as he learned to do.  Sara and Richard talk about everything from following our Intuition, to being an entrepreneur, creating from necessity and passion, and most importantly: Never giving up on yourself. This Life-Saving, Anti-Brand Entrepreneur Is A Lucky F*ck

Richard Laver's first beverage brand is named after his daughter Kate. He named the second one, Lucky F*ck, after himself. A former professional tennis player, Laver became an entrepreneur out of necessity. Kate was born with cerebral palsy and couldn't eat solid foods nor was able to tolerate tube-feeding formulas. Frustrated with the lack of better-for-you options for his daughter, he created a protein shake made with plant-based ingredients and free from common allergens. The beverage helped Kate thrive, and Laver, sensing it could benefit others, commercialized the product, launching Kate Farms in 2012. The brand has since become the most recommended plant-based formula in U.S. hospitals. Two months after Kate Farms closed on a $75 million dollar Series C funding round in September 2022, Laver stepped away from the company and set his sights on another beverage category he viewed as ripe for disruption: energy drinks. The goal was to create what he describes as an “anti-brand” akin to Liquid Death. The result is Lucky F*ck, a name inspired by Laver's survival of a 1985 plane crash. Designed to appeal to Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers, the brand launched in August and promotes five “super” ingredients, including maca and ginseng, five calories per 19.2 oz. can and no aftertaste. In this episode, Laver chronicles his path from a 12-year-old child who made it out of the crash that killed 136 people, including his father, to being homeless at age 27, as well as the birth of his daughter and the eventual development of Kate Farms. He also discussed how a pivot in Kate Farms' positioning and sales strategy changed its trajectory and outlined the retail and communication strategies for Lucky F*ck. Show notes: 0:43: Interview: Richard Laver, Founder, Kate Farms & Lucky F*ck – Laver spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif while on vacation with his family in Spain, where he was also producing social media content for Lucky F*ck. He discussed the harrowing prognostication and effects of surviving a plane crash, his refusal to accept a ‘failure to thrive' diagnosis for his daughter and how the healthcare industry became the primary distribution channel for Kate Farms. Later, he explained how Lucky F*ck's positioning separates it from legacy and better-for-you energy brands, weaving his personal story into that of the brand's and how the company is attempting to elicit engagement with consumers. On today's episode Richard Laver co-founder of Kate Farms shares his incredible story.  In 2011, Richard Laver and his wife Michelle set out on a mission to help their daughter Kate who was born with Cerebral Palsy and weighed only 16 pounds when she was four years old. Faced with feeding tubes and numerous hospital visits, he searched for a formula that offered better nutrition. After trying over 70 formulas, Richard eventually consulted a chef and registered dietician for guidance on creating a well-balanced meal in a bottle that would provide the nutrients and taste to help their daughter thrive. This is how Kate Farms was born. Prior to co-founding Kate Farms with his wife, Michelle, Richard was a professional tennis player. Entrepreneurship (and athletics) run in Richard's family as his grandfather owned a sporting goods store and his father built the famous Laver's International Tennis Resort in Florida. Richard has taken systemic approach to solving a problem that affects the lives of many people while keeping Kate in at the heart of their mission along every step of the way.
