Thanks for joining me, and let's jump into the podcast.                                 Hello Rational Wellness podcasters. Today, we will be speaking about leaky gut with Dr. Jess Armine. Leaky gut is a controversial concept in the functional medicine world. No, I'm not talking about the controversy in conventional medicine about whether leaky gut exists at all. Most of us understand that there's tons of research substantiating that leaky gut exists and that it's a problem, but there are differences about how to test for leaky gut. There's the old lactulose mannitol intestinal permeability test, but most of us today are either using a serum test for zonulin or a stool zonulin test, or a serum test for zonulin antibodies, and there's a lot of controversy whether any of these are accurate.  I personally run a stool zonulin as part of a stool test, but quite frankly, I assume that most of my patients with gut problems have leaky gut. There's also controversy about the best strategies for healing leaky gut and whether probiotics, and which ones, prebiotics, which ones, bone broth, et cetera, et cetera. How should we heal leaky gut? I'm hoping that Dr. Jess Armine can give us some clarification and guidance for how to understand leaky gut and how to treat it. Dr. Jess Armine is a doctor of chiropractic. He graduated in 1986, a year before me, and a registered nurse. He has specialized training in methylation, genetic research, neuro-endo immunology, functional medicine, nutrigenomics applied kinesiology and nutrition. He specializes in diagnosing and treating complex illnesses. Dr. Jess lectures worldwide and continues to treat patients mostly remotely. He co-authored a book with Elizma Lambert, ND entitled, Leaky Gut, Leaky Cells, Leaky Brain. Jess Armine, thank you so much for joining us. Dr. Armine:         Thank you for inviting me. Basically all that stuff means I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Dr. Weitz:            Me too. Personally, I hope I never grow up. Dr. Armine:         No. I'll tell you something. I have multiple, multiple interests, and like you said,

Jackson (she/her/hers) is a Certified Usui Reiki Practitioner and Holistic Wellness Coach from Oakland, CA. Porsha helps clients improve their well being from “The Inside, Outside and Beyond” - the inside through diet and nutrition, the outside through movement, stretch and flexibility, and beyond through Reiki energy healing, meditation and breath work. If you've ever considered becoming a healing practitioner or you've been in the healing arts for a long time, this interview will light you up. Phillip Ward, Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist, inspires me to bring my best to my self-care practice and my clients. Phillip and I go way back, all the way back to massage school in 1995 when we were both waking up and beginning our healing journey. If anyone out there has an interest in enrolling in a healing arts school, becoming a massage therapist, acupuncturist or any kind of holistic healer, I hope you listen to this interview for some huge truth bombs and wisdom from Philip. "The secret for me in any type of self-help work, reprogramming, adopting a new spiritual practice or meditation...what makes it, ultimately, is if you commit with all of your soul. Commit to what you want with all your soul, commit to being awesome at life and wanting to be your best self and follow that program with consistency, that's the secret."-Phillip Ward, L.Ac I had so much fun doing this interview with Phillip, where we explore:  *Why massage school teaches you about a whole lot more than massage therapy *How to navigate through a healing crisis and how "waking up" is not for the faint of heart *What it takes to de-program ourselves and what that has actually been like for both of us *We discuss the link between art and healing, along with Phillip's journey in acting, film, bodywork and tai chi *Phillip shares his passion and journey into Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture and how we became an acupuncturist to the stars. *Consistency is the science. Why the workout or mediation practice that works is the one you will do consistently. *When it comes to making a career choice to be a healer, whatever you're doing supports you, you are doing it right. The only way to know is make a decision about something and see if it feeds your soul. *The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by, Dan Millman, is a favorite of both of ours and we didn't even know it.  I share a really sweet story about my Dad's connect with this book while he was in jail. This book is a must read and Phillip shares the principle of how knowledge is useless if it isn't used. https://www.amazon.com/Way-Peaceful-Warrior-Changes-Lives/dp/1932073205 *I re-read The Diamond Cutter all the time and I get something new out of it each time I take in the wisdom. I can't recommend this book enough! https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Cutter-Buddha-Managing-Business/dp/038552868X *We also discuss how healing practitioners can strengthen and fortify each other and why this is so important right now. About Phillip Ward Phillip Ward is a California and North Carolina, Licensed Acupuncturist and a Nationally Certified Herbalist. He committed to walking the path of a healer in 1995, when he began studying the art of harmonious living with a tai chi and qi gong master. The same year he graduated from the Body Therapy Institute and opened a bodywork and energy healing practice in Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1998, he co-founded the Golden Flower Tai Chi School of Greensboro, and began teaching bodywork, energy healing, and Polarity Therapy at a school for massage therapy. He continued to grow his knowledge in health and healing by attending Yo San University’s School of Traditional Chinese Medicine while also studying External Qi Healing with a 25th generation Long Men Taoist Priest. Incorporating over 20 years of experience in Nutritional Counseling, Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Cupping, Deep Tissue Massage, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, meditation, and Polarity Therapy, every treatment is individualized to support the patient’s immediate and long-term healthcare needs. Whether it's the foods you eat, the products you use (perfumes, detergents, etc), or even the people around you— How does it make you feel? At ease or at dis-ease?  A simple way to do this is to start with one small thing, such as your go-to snack. Before eating it, give it some thought for a minute or so—will your choice make you feel good afterwards? If not, perhaps make another choice. And if you don't want to make another choice, why is that? Is it because you're craving this food, or do you just want to eat it out of convenience? Then check it in the same way with the same questions about everything else around you! As with most weekly challenges, this is a total game changer ! A hair-dresser seeks relief of severe back pain from spine specialist, Dr. Anthony Galante to avoid back surgery. Dr. Galante graduated from National University of Health Sciences in 1992, is certified in Cox Technique Flexion/Distraction, author of The Sciatic Survival Guide and is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. Dr. Galante grew up with back pain. His mother suffered with it, his father had stenosis and arthritis, his grandfather had 2 low back surgeries (neither surgery helped), several aunts and uncles have dealt with back pain, with it being so prevalent in his family it wasn't a big surprise that Dr. Galante found himself in a chiropractor's office at the tender age of 17. You see, Dr. Galante had a history of low back pain going back to middle school! For years the nagging pain was there, but it wasn't until a hard hit in a hockey game landed the good doctor on his hip that the back really flared up! Suffering with back pain on and off during his 20's, he found traditional chiropractic techniques were not relieving the pain and it continued into his early 30's. This caused Dr. Galante to search for a solution. And he found one. The Cox Technique relieved Dr. Galante's back pain for the first time in 2 YEARS! Currently, Dr. Galante uses numerous treatments to improve his patient's quality of life. In addition to the Cox Technique, he utilizes Manipulation, Physical Therapy, Super Pulsed Laser, Whole Body Standing Vibration, Rebuilder Therapy, Orthotic Therapy, TENS units, Diet and Nutritional Counseling, Kinesiotaping and Massage Therapy. Dr. Galante lives in Algonquin with his wife and two children. Resources: Dr. Galante's website 224-829-0339 Find a Back Doctor The Back Doctors Podcast website

Practitioner Spotlight Episode with Elise Purcell Elise had been practicing Nutritional Counseling for seven years prior to finding FDN.  She found that, though her clients did have significant health success, in more recent years, were starting to present deeper challenges that were not being healed by diet alone.  She yearned to help them find the root cause and avoid the guessing game like she had experienced, thus her journey to FDN began! A major take home from FDN training for Elise is that empowerment is everything!  She feels that if a person knows what’s going on inside their body and why, they are more inspired to make the commitments to improve their health.
