Keith Burns is the CEO and Co-chairman of Lullwater & Co., a private investment firm dedicated to building enduring companies through long-term partnerships. He also serves as Co-executive Chairman of Apex Physics Partners, the largest medical physics services provider in the US, and previously led Seneca Creek Partners, a search fund that completed 15 acquisitions and achieved a successful investor exit in 2019. A former attorney and Goldman Sachs executive, Keith holds a BBA from Emory University and a JD and MS in real estate development from Columbia University. He is an adjunct assistant professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and actively mentors emerging entrepreneurs through teaching and board service. In this episode… Scaling a business feels like navigating chaos — especially when taking over a company in its awkward adolescent phase, where systems are fragile, leadership is thin, and growth potential remains untapped. Many entrepreneurs struggle with transitioning ownership, aligning staff, and building toward a sustainable future without losing what made the business special. So, how do you effectively professionalize and grow a service business while honoring its core culture? Keith Burns, an experienced investor and operator, shares his strategic approach to acquiring and scaling service-based businesses. Drawing from his background in law, finance, and healthcare services, he outlines the importance of starting with a rock-solid foundation — listening to employees through HR assessments and building trust. He emphasizes the power of recurring revenue models, the risks of integration debt, and how to avoid common pitfalls like promising no change during acquisitions. Keith also dives into red flags to watch for, such as poor seller alignment or low cash flow conversion, and offers frameworks for assessing business viability and long-term potential. In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz interviews Keith Burns, Co-chairman and CEO of Lullwater & Co., about strategic business acquisitions and scaling through thoughtful integration. Keith discusses how he grew the largest medical physics company in the US, shares lessons from teaching entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago, and talks about identifying business red flags, embracing culture, and choosing the right problems to solve.

Keith Burns is an award-winning aviation artist and illustrator. As a student he dreamed of becoming a comic book artist but after his teachers at art college discouraged him from the career path, he dropped out and became a bus driver. Ten years later he received an email inviting him to submit a comic strip to a talent finding project. His submission led to a meeting with Dave Gibbons, co-creator of Watchmen. Gibbons encouraged my guest to pursue his gift, which eventually led to a long-standing collaboration with renowned comic book writer Garth Ennis. In 2012 he joined the Guild of Aviation Artists, in 2015 won the Messier Dowty award for Best Acrylic Painting, and in 2016, the Aviation Painting of the Year. In 2023 in collaboration with James Holland he published The Second World War: An Illustrated History, for which my guest produced nearly 300 illustrations during the course of five years.  Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. 1998 was an exciting year for Razorback fans. Led by first-year coach Houston Nutt, the Hogs put a much-needed jolt of excitement into the fan base. A big part of that was Arkansas' Code Red defense, led by first-year coordinator Keith Burns. But Code Red was more than a scheme—it was a way of life. And Burns was the perfect guy to lead it. For Burns, his passion for the Razorbacks began during his playing career under Lou Holtz in the early ‘80s. That passion is what led him to leave USC and join Nutt's staff at Arkansas. And for two seasons, Burns and the Razorback defense didn't back down from anyone. So how did it all come together and form a perfect storm that terrorized SEC offenses? It was the right coach in the right place at the right time.

No doubt kids back in the 1930s were as bored as kids during COVID-19! Their answer: tree sitting. That's right, kids in the 1930s tried to see how long they could stay up in a tree. One Wacoan, Jack Kellner Jr., briefly held the world record by staying in a tree off Homan Ave for more than 156 hours! Listen as Stephen and Randy take a trip into Waco's past: The Waco History Project has more on this moment in time: At 1 p.m. July 16, 1930, Frank Kellner Jr., 12, climbed the cottonwood tree in the backyard of his home, 2324 Homan Ave. — launching the craze in Waco. The News-Tribune reported that the youngster, a 94-pound Boy Scout who looked like he was "out to try anything for glory," had a support team made up of pals Sidney Carlisle, Keith Burns and Maynard G. Darden. The trio sent up three meals a day, made by Frank's enthusiastic mother, in a basket on a rope. Some even climbed up to his quilt-lined and book-laden platform to play a board game to help him while away the hours. Frank's father told reporters that he'd offered his son a $1 per day incentive for each day past the record Frank could make it. A day later, two female rivals took to the branches. Frances Coates, 11, and Mildred Fraser, 13, with a black and white kitten for company, climbed a tree at 502 Dallas St. and nestled among blankets and pillows stuffed in the crotches of a box elder. Their support team was composed of friends Mildred Yarbrough and Marie Stewart. Learn more at wacohistory.com/tree-sitting --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/waco-history-podcast/support

For the past several weeks the Two Guys with PhDs have been looking mostly at book-length works, trades, original graphic novels, and archival collections. This week, Andy W. and Derek thought that they'd catch up with their single-comic-book-issue reading by focusing on six recent #1 titles: Paper Girls - Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang (Image Comics) Monstress - Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda (Image Comics) The Goddamned - Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra (Image Comics) Klaus - Grant  Morrison and Dan Mora (BOOM! Studios) Snow Blind - Ollie Masters and Tyler Jenkins (BOOM! Studios) James Bond - Warren Ellis and Jason Masters (Dynamite Entertainment) The guys note that there's an embarrassment of riches to choose from, as there have been many recent first issues from some powerhouse creators, including Brian K. Vaughan, Jason Aaron, Grant Morrison, and Warren Ellis. For the most part, each of the titles from these writers is a home run, although Andy is not quite impressed with Klaus, feeling that it's a little too formulaic. The guys also note that The Goddamned isn't for those with Puritanical sensibilities, James Bond breaks free of the property's Hollywood shackles, and Paper Girls visits the 1980s in a fun and non-stereotypical way. (Plus, Derek is glad that there are no Goonies references anywhere to be found.) Snow Blind is a great first issue, as well, setting up what promises to be an intelligent four-issue crime/noir miniseries...although given the potential in this inaugural issue, this story seems that it could go on for more than four installments. And both Andy and Derek are bowled away by Liu and Takeda's Monstress. Not only is the storytelling sophisticated, intricate, and intelligently populated, but there is over sixty pages of story in this first issue. The guys are used to oversized #1 issues from Image -- in fact, they're getting spoiled by them -- but the amount of material in this comic goes above and beyond! Finally, the guys wrap up my commenting briefly on some of the other recent #1 issues that they could have included in this episode, such as Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott's Black Magick (Image Comics); Garth Ennis and Keith Burns's Johnny Red (Titan Comics); Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Patric Reynolds's Joe Golem: Occult Detective (Dark Horse Comics); and Sam Humphries and Tommy Patterson's Citizen Jack (Image Comics). Again, an embarrassment of riches.

It's that time of the month for the Two Guys with PhDs…that is, it's time for the July Previews catalog! On this episode, Andy and Derek take their monthly gander at some of the great comics being solicited in Previews and due out in the next couple of months. All of the major publishers, and many, many of the smaller ones, are represented here, and the guys comment on how this is a particularly fat month when it comes to new and upcoming comics. They begin the show by looking at some of the titles being offered for this year's Halloween ComicFest, and then they get into the nitty-gritty of the catalog. Some of the titles that they highlight include Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly's The New York Four and Satoshi Kon's Opus (Dark Horse), Peter Milligan and Leandro Fernandez's The Names #1 and Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's The Wake hardcover (Vertigo/DC Comics), Will Eisner's Spirit, Vol. 2: Artist's Edition and Craig Yoe's The Worst of Eerie Publications (IDW Publishing), Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski's Copperhead #1 and Ryan Browne's God Hates Astronauts #1 (Image Comics), Gary Scott Beatly and Aaron Warner's Number One #1 (Aazurn Publishing), Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and Robert Hack's Sabrina #1 (Archie Comics), Hubert and Marie Caillou's Adrian and the Tree of Secrets and Julie Maroh's Skandalon (Arsenal Pulp Press), George Perez's Sirens #1 (BOOM! Studios), Duane Swierczynsky and Keith Burns's Ex-Con #1 (Dynamite Entertainment), Gilbert Hernandez's Bumperhead (Drawn and Quarterly), Dash Shaw's Doctors and Joe Sacco's Bumf 1: I Buggered the Kaiser (Fantagraphics), Paul Pope and J. T. Petty's Battling Boy: The Rise of Aurora West and Farel Dalrymple's The Wrenchies (First Second), Grant Morrison and Frazer Irving's Annihilator #1 (Legendary Comics), Greg Rucka and Justin Greenwood's Stumptown: The Case of the King of Clubs #1 (Oni Press), and Jorg Tittle and John Aggs's Ricky Rouse Has a Gun (SelfMadeHero). And this is just the tip of the solicitation iceberg. You really do have to listen to the entire episode to get the full scope, and warm fuzzy feelings, of this month's Previews.

My guests on this episode are Michael Curry and Keith Burns who together have acquired 11 diagnostic radiation and other physics services businesses since 2014 through their platform Apex Physics Partners. This episode is loaded with wisdom and insights. I had a number of alternative titles I considered based on quotes for the conversation like "the CEO of Delta doesn't know how to fly" or "putting out fires with your face." Ultimately, earning the right to lead felt right as we talk extensively about their experience being first-time CEOs in an industry they had no background in, but through it all, they've managed to build an impressive track record at Apex with an ever-growing team. Over the course of this episode, we discuss the concept of the messy middle between the start and ultimate success of a business, signal versus noise and learning about the company you've acquired, how to know you're a good leader, letting go of control, and building a culture that grows.
