Sagt jedenfalls Arnd, hat dafür aber nur die zeithistorische Anekdote parat, dass Sepp Maier bei der WM 74 auch kritisiert wurde und hinterher ein richtig gutes Turnier gespielt hat. rWotD Episode 2556: Peter "Mars" Cowling Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Friday, 3 May 2024 is Peter "Mars" Cowling.Peter "Mars" Cowling (May 26, 1946 – March 20, 2018) was an English bass guitarist, best known for his work with Canadian blues rock guitarist Pat Travers.Cowling for many years lived in Grimsby where, in 1962, he formed The Syndicate with Steve Mills on vocals, Frank Singleton on lead guitar, Doug Hollingworth rhythm guitar, Geoff Smith on piano, and John Smith on drums. This band played covers of tracks by Elmore James, Ray Charles, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Troup, and John Lee Hooker. After that, Cowling played in British groups including Gnidrolog and the Flying Hat Band, before joining forces with Pat Travers in 1975.Cowling recorded eight albums for Travers from 1976 to 1982. He left Travers that year and later in the 1980s joined sisters Pam and Paula Mattioli in US AOR band Gypsy Queen (later to become Cell Mates in the early 1990s after Cowling's time in the band), appearing at the 1987 Reading Rock Festival and on Gypsy Queen's debut album before leaving the band later the same year. He rejoined Travers in 1989, and remained until 1993. He performed on Travers' singles "Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)" and "Snortin' Whiskey". Cowling was also featured on two video releases. The first was Hooked On Music, a live performance originally shot for the German television programme, Rockpalast in 1976, which showcased an early line-up that also included Nicko McBrain. In den 70ern und 80ern gab's kaum eine bessere Möglichkeit, seine Musikidole zu erleben: Sendungen wie Beat Club, Musikladen, Disco oder Formel 1 brachten die angesagten Stars auf die Mattscheibe. Lutz Stolberg hat das damals alles miterlebt und kann sich noch bestens an die unterschiedlichen Shows erinnern. In dieser Folge streifen wir durch die Geschichte der frühen Musiksendungen und klären u.a., warum der Beat Club anfangs auf enorm große Skepsis stieß. Außerdem erfahren Sie, warum Disco-Moderator Ilja Richter seine Hollywood-Träume aufgeben musste und was "Kojak"-Darsteller Telly Savalas damit zu tun hatte. Das und noch viel mehr gibt's in dieser Folge! HINWEIS: In dieser Folge haben sich zwei Fehler eingeschlichen. 1. Die letzte Sendung vom "Musikladen" am 29. November 1984 endete mit Duran Duran und "The Wild Boys", danach verabschiedete sich Manfred Sexauer feierlich von seinem Publikum (und nicht klammheimlich, wie in dieser Folge behauptet) 2. Die Puppe bei "Vorsicht Musik" hieß Herr Feldmann (nicht "Herr von Bödefeld" - das war eine Puppe in der Sesamstraße). Außerdem steckte hinter der Puppe nicht Frank Zander, sondern Hugo Egon Balder. Im zweiten Teil unseres Meilensteine-Weihnachtsspecials geht es um die Musik von Ryan Adams, Mike Viola und der deutschen Band "The Jeremy Days. Mit dabei ist auch Dirk Darmstädter von "The Jeremy Days". Mike Viola ist Sänger, Produzent, Musiker und Songwriter und auch wenn er selbst nicht zu den ganz großen Stars gehört, so hat er doch schon mit einigen zusammengearbeitet. Mit dabei waren zum Beispiel Ryan Adams, auf den wir später noch zu sprechen kommen und auch die Band "Panic! At The Disco" rund um Sänger Brendon Urie. Diese wurde Mitte der 2000er Jahre immer bekannter und konnte sogar Preise wie den MTV Video Music Award und Grammys gewinnen. Vor allem ihre Songs "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" und "High Hopes" waren international sehr erfolgreich. "Panic! at the Disco"-Sänger Brendon Urie wirkte im Umkehrschluss auch bei Mike Violas neuem Album "Paul McCarthy" mit. Allerdings nicht als Sänger, sondern am Schlagzeug – eine Hand wäscht eben die andere. Besonders spannend ist bei der Musik von Mike Viola, dass er immer wieder auch mit popkulturellen Referenzen spielt, was zum einen seine persönliche Meinung dazu übermittelt und zum anderen bei Pop-Afficionados das ein oder andere Schmunzeln hervorruft. Für Sänger und Songwriter Dirk Darmstädter ist es definitiv das beste Popmusik-Album, das er in diesem Jahr gehört hat, erzählt er im SWR1 Meilensteine Podcast. "Jeder der wirklich mal eintauchen möchte in die magische Welt, was Popmusik eigentlich sein könnte, der möge sich diese Platte anhören", empfiehlt Dirk Darmstädter von der Hamburger Band "The Jeremy Days". Taylor Swift ist großer Fan von Ryan Adams Der Titel von seinem Album "1989" kommt einem als Popmusik-Fan durchaus zurecht bekannt vor. Es ist nämlich ein Coveralbum von Taylor Swift's gleichnamigem Album. Textlich ist es quasi identisch, musikalisch dabei aber vollkommen anders. Die Musik des Singer/Songwriters ist keine episch ausproduzierte Popmusik, sondern sehr zarter und zurückgenommener (fast) Akustik-Pop. Spannend ist dabei zu entdecken, wie viel mehr an Möglichkeiten in der Musik von Popstar Taylor Swift steckt. "Er hat wirklich etwas Neues daraus gemacht", sagt SWR1 Musikredakteurin Katharina Heinius. Neu ist für Sie, bei Songs wie "Shake It Off" zum Beispiel, dass Ryan Adams dabei die ganzen elektronischen Elemente durch organische Instrumente ersetzt, dadurch den Sound komplett verändert und die Songs mehr atmen lässt. Sängerin Taylor Swift ist übrigens überhaupt nicht böse gewesen, dass sich Ryan Adams an ihren Songs bedient hat. Ganz im Gegenteil, sie fühlte sich dadurch sogar richtig geehrt. The Jeremy Days – Circushead "Circushead" ist das zweite Album der Band "The Jeremy Days". Und die zweite Platte ist – wir haben es schon öfter erwähnt – das schwierigste Album für einen Künstler oder eine Band, denn daran entscheidet sich oft: war die Band nur ein Zufallserfolg, oder kann man sich doch vielleicht als seriöser Künstler etablieren? Was Dirk Darmstädter und seiner Band in den 80ern wichtig war: sie wollten vor allem nicht nach Neuer Deutscher Welle klingen und das in Deutschland war dieser Sound und diese Musik gerade das Nonplusultra. Also machte die Band das, was für sie am sinnvollsten erschien: sie zogen um! Von Hamburg nach London. "Damit (NDW) wollten wir überhaupt nix zu tun haben. Wir fühlten uns in Hamburg nicht als Teil irgendeiner Szene und wir fühlten uns auch nicht verstanden. Und alle unsere musikalischen Helden [...] waren alle in dieser magischen Stadt: London", erzählt Dirk Darmstädter im Podcast. In London waren die Künstler, die die Band selbst feierte und es war die Stadt, in der sie ihre musikalischen Soundwünsche am ehesten verwirklichen lassen konnten. Albrecht Metzger hat den legendären „Rockpalast“ im deutschen Fernsehen moderiert, er hat die Kabarettgruppe „Schwabenoffensive“ gegründet und rund 40 Dokumentarfilme gedreht.
Lance Lopez is an American blues rock and Texas blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Lopez has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Beck has described Lopez as "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". Lopez has spoken over the years about being mentored by both Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter. Lopez was age 16 at the time he met Gibbons, and they have remained friends throughout. Over the period between 2008 and 2011, Lopez toured in Europe extensively, playing at larger music festivals and supporting acts including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2009, Lopez had signed a new recording contract with MIG (Made In Germany) Music / String Commander, who were based in Hanover, Germany. In 2010, the album Salvation From Sundown, which was produced by Jim Gaines was released by MIG. It was issued in limited edition format alongside a DVD of the Rockpalast concert recorded on July 25, 2009. It was deliberately arranged in a Texas blues style, which led to Jeff Beck calling Lopez, "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". In March 2012, MIG Music released the sixth album from Lopez, Handmade Music. As with the previous release, the album was produced by Jim Gaines and recorded at the Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2012, Supersonic Blues Machine was formed by Lopez, the drummer Kenny Aronoff, and the bassist and record producer Fabrizio Grossi. They released their debut album, West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco, which was recorded mainly by the three musicians separately and using Pro Tools technology to bring the various elements together. The same principle was used in selecting the guest musicians tracks to be added to the overall mix. The band was 'augmented' on the recording by Billy Gibbons, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales and Chris Duarte. The rigors of touring and the lifestyle caught up with Lopez around this time. Lopez stated "My own personal struggles were overcoming alcoholism, drug addiction and to start eating healthier, lose weight and exercise... I struggled for years drinking and drugging and eating badly while I was drinking... I became very overweight". Once recovered, Lopez noted about performing, "That still doesn't mean every night is perfect... but at least I can walk away and say I did the best I could and I was sober doing it". His next release was Live in NYC (2016), which was issued on Cleopatra Records and produced by Paul Nelson. The recording come out of Lopez attending, and performing at, the 70th birthday party for Johnny Winter. Lance Lopez is an American blues rock and Texas blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Lopez has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Beck has described Lopez as "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". Lopez has spoken over the years about being mentored by both Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter. Lopez was age 16 at the time he met Gibbons, and they have remained friends throughout. Over the period between 2008 and 2011, Lopez toured in Europe extensively, playing at larger music festivals and supporting acts including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2009, Lopez had signed a new recording contract with MIG (Made In Germany) Music / String Commander, who were based in Hanover, Germany. In 2010, the album Salvation From Sundown, which was produced by Jim Gaines was released by MIG. It was issued in limited edition format alongside a DVD of the Rockpalast concert recorded on July 25, 2009. It was deliberately arranged in a Texas blues style, which led to Jeff Beck calling Lopez, "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". In March 2012, MIG Music released the sixth album from Lopez, Handmade Music. As with the previous release, the album was produced by Jim Gaines and recorded at the Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2012, Supersonic Blues Machine was formed by Lopez, the drummer Kenny Aronoff, and the bassist and record producer Fabrizio Grossi. They released their debut album, West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco, which was recorded mainly by the three musicians separately and using Pro Tools technology to bring the various elements together. The same principle was used in selecting the guest musicians tracks to be added to the overall mix. Vocalist/guitarist Brian Krumm formed The Great Crusades more than 20 years ago, following his tenure with The Suede Chain. The Great Crusades' debut, The First Spilled Drink of the Evening was released in 1997, earning the praise of Rolling Stone's David Fricke: “The Great Crusades look at life through a shot-glass lens, mixing anger, muscle and minor-key remorse like a roughneck Tindersticks with the bonus of a singer who's got the tubercular pipes of Tom Waits and Axl Rose's love child.” In 2000, Damaged Goods was released by Glitterhouse Records in Europe and Checkered Past Records in North America. Next, the Never Go Home tour was presented by Musikexpress Magazine and the band appeared on the legendary TV program Rockpalast. (The band also played Rockpalast in 2015—one of only a few bands to play the show twice.) Welcome to the Hiawatha Inn, Four Thirty, Keep Them Entertained, Fiction to Shame, Thieves of Chicago and Until the Night Turned to Day followed, each providing a new focus for Krumm's ever-evolving songwriting and storytelling. Two songs from Keep Them Entertained appeared in the season 4 finale of the HBO vampire series True Blood. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic put music venues on hold worldwide, Krumm focused on solo work and began writing the materials that'd wind up on Just Fade Away. Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many off shoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Our journey this week takes us from Weinheim to Oldenburg and finally to the vaunted Rock Hard Festival in Gelsenkirchen. You will hear about troublesome strobe lights in Oldenburg and why the guys were so eagerly anticipating the Rock Hard gig. Alas, vehicle troubles threatened to derail the entire enterprise, but Night Demon made it to the festival and delivered a blinder of a gig. Wie fühlt es sich an, wenn man weiß, dass ein live gesetzter Schnitt in Deutschland von mehr als 10 Millionen Menschen antizipiert wird. (Von den Zuschauerzahlen einer Europa- oder Weltmeisterschaft ganz zu schweigen.) Warum bedienen Regisseur:innen meistens auch den Bildmischer? Wo ist der/die Filmeditor:in? Und vor allem: Was hat die Bratwurst mit all dem zu tun? Sebastian von Freyberg, der seit vielen Jahren bei Fußball-Liveübertragungen am Bildmischpult sitzt, steht uns diesmal dazu Rede und Antwort. Sebastian von Freyberg führte bei vielen Unterhaltungs- und Talkshows (u.a. bei der "Harald-Schmidt-Show", bei "Menschen bei Maischberger" oder bei "Rockpalast") sowie zahlreichen Sportevents, aber vor allem im Fußballbereich Regie. Kai WIngenfelder hat eine unverkennbare Stimme. Gemeinsam mit seiner Band Fury in the Slaughterhouse haben sie den Soundtrack für eine gnaze Generation geschaffen. 1986 ging es los. In den 1990´er erlebte die Band ihren Höhenpunkt. 2008 waren sie ganz unten und lösten sich auf. Jetzt sind sie mit dem 14. Studioalbum "Now" zurück und haben ein fulminantes Comeback hingelegt. Da gibt es jede Menge, über das ich mit Kai auf unserem Spaziergang spreche: es geht um seine Panikattacken, unter denen er 1994 während der USA Tournee gelitten hat, warum sie dankbar waren, dass die Teresa Orlowski Filme in Hannover synchronisiert wurden, seine Mitgliedschaft als Jugendlicher in der SPD, was ihn mit Robert Habeck verbindet und natürlich sprechen wir über Now.

It has been a decade since the Grammy-nominated ‘Live in Chicago’ captured the ferocity of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his band’s live performance. Since then the multi-platinum selling Shepherd has gone from strength to strength, releasing four studio albums and touring the world over several times - from Brazil to Europe, India to Canada and US to Australia and beyond. The calls have been coming for a long time explains Shepherd. "People have been asking us to do a live concert video forever, for decades," he explains. "We've been working so much focussing on studio recordings. But I've been hearing the call from the fans for many years now," and, as live music has come to a standstill, the band wanted to give the fans a taste once again of that experience and this blistering set shows them in full force. The band was only a couple of weeks into ‘The Traveler World Tour’ when the Covid-19 pandemic broke, and the world came to a standstill. The show took place at the famous Leverkusen Jazzstage for the iconic German TV show, Rockpalast on November 25th, 2019. ‘The Traveler’ was released in May last year, giving the band their 8th US Billboard Blues #1 album, when they hit the road. . The seven-piece band took the stage and immediately launched into their most-recent hit-single 'Woman Like You,' with the honey-soaked powerhouse voice of Noah Hunt blasting "I ain't looking for a one time girl" backed by the fiery fretwork of Shepherd. While Kenny has had six #1 rock tracks and a slew of top ten songs, no show would be complete without the mega-hit 'Blue on Black' – taken from the bands second album, it spent an incredible 42 weeks on the US Billboard Rock Charts on its release, winning the Rock Track of the Year which now has over 25m streams and became a 2019 smash when Shepherd collaborated with some friends. “That’s the song that we cannot, not walk out onto the stage and play,” says the Louisiana guitarist. “I’ve been playing that song for more than 20 years, and I still enjoy playing it. As a songwriter it’s the song that you hope you can write. It’s a timeless song that doesn’t really seem to age.” The release of ‘Straight To You: Live’ comes during a time when there is no live music and the world looks a very different place. As The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band bow out on a phenomenal finale of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return),’ they wave goodbye to the cheering Leverkusen crowd and it reignites that love of live music and the hope that is to come.

"We've been working so much focussing on studio recordings. But I've been hearing the call from the fans for many years now," and, as live music has come to a standstill, the band wanted to give the fans a taste once again of that experience and this blistering set shows them in full force. The band was only a couple of weeks into ‘The Traveler World Tour’ when the Covid-19 pandemic broke, and the world came to a standstill. The show took place at the famous Leverkusen Jazzstage for the iconic German TV show, Rockpalast on November 25th, 2019. ‘The Traveler’ was released in May last year, giving the band their 8th US Billboard Blues #1 album, when they hit the road. . The seven-piece band took the stage and immediately launched into their most-recent hit-single 'Woman Like You,' with the honey-soaked powerhouse voice of Noah Hunt blasting "I ain't looking for a one time girl" backed by the fiery fretwork of Shepherd. While Kenny has had six #1 rock tracks and a slew of top ten songs, no show would be complete without the mega-hit 'Blue on Black' – taken from the bands second album, it spent an incredible 42 weeks on the US Billboard Rock Charts on its release, winning the Rock Track of the Year which now has over 25m streams and became a 2019 smash when Shepherd collaborated with some friends. “That’s the song that we cannot, not walk out onto the stage and play,” says the Louisiana guitarist. “I’ve been playing that song for more than 20 years, and I still enjoy playing it. As a songwriter it’s the song that you hope you can write. It’s a timeless song that doesn’t really seem to age.” The release of ‘Straight To You: Live’ comes during a time when there is no live music and the world looks a very different place. As The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band bow out on a phenomenal finale of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return),’ they wave goodbye to the cheering Leverkusen crowd and it reignites that love of live music and the hope that is to come.

In the summer of 1981, for the first time in Germany, what a statement about Southern Rock! 60 minutes full of unbridled joy of playing, bursting with power and endurance. "The Eagle Has Landed", the crew was Freddie Salem (guit./voc.), Hughie Thomasson (guit./voc.), Billy Jones (guit./voc.), David Dix (drums) and Rick Cua (bass) on the Lorelei on August 29th 1981. The Outlaws had released their commercially successful album "Ghost Riders" one year before. The track "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" (original title: "Ghost Riders In The Sky: A Cowboy Legend") was penned by Stan Jones, had already been covered by Johnny Cash and the Blues Brothers and became the new anthem of Southern rock fans in the Outlaw version. At the Lorelei, the Outlaws played an 8-minute version of “Ghost Riders In The Sky” with a guitar battle between Freddie Salem, Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones while the blissful fans in the audience waved an oversized Southern States banner. An incredible live experience is also their other Southern statement "Green Grass And High Tides", which stretches over breathtaking 20 minutes. Seit im Sommer 1977 die erste Rockpalast-Nacht aus der Essener Grugahalle ausgestrahlt wurde, fanden sich zwei Mal im Jahr Rockfans in mehreren europäischen Ländern zu Partys vor Fernseher und Stereoanlage zusammen. Auch wenn die Rockpalast-Nächte trotz der internationalen Besetzung kein Quotenhit waren, wurde die Sendung legendär. Peter Rüchel, der "Vater des Rockpalasts" ist am 20. Februar 2019 gestorben. En 1978 Muddy Waters contaba 65 años de edad, estaba en la mitad del renacimiento de suy carrera y se encontraba en plenitud de sus condiciones. En diciembre de ese año se presentó en el Westfalenhalle de Dortmund, Alemania, concierto que fue grabado por la televisión alemana dentro del famoso programa Rockpalast. La poderosa presencia de Muddy Waters, su maravillosa voz y su carisma quedaron registrados en audio y video y hoy podemos disfrutarlo en un estuche de dos CD y dos DVD, en el primero de ellos las 13 canciones interpretadas junto con su banda, que contaba con pesos pesados como Pinetop Perkins en el piano, Bob Margolin y Luther “Guitar” Johnson en la guitarra, Calvin “Fuzz” Jones en el bajo, Willie “Big Eyes“ Smith en la batería y Jerry Portnoy en la armónica. El segundo CD y su DVD compañero recogen una presentación de The Muddy Waters Tribute Band realizada en junio de 1996. Aunque estas grabaciones de Muddy Waters hayan sido hechas hace 40 años, se destaca la calidad de audio y el gran trabajo de cámara que captura a la banda divirtiéndose sobre el escenario, algo que a estos músicos siempre les gustó hacer.
