And they were talking about this interesting marketing concepts called TOFU, MOFU and BOFU. And I'm going to let them explain itRick Lindquist: [00:00:16] Tofu is top of the funnel T O F U MOFU is middle of the funnel, MOFU and BOFU is bottom of the funnel.  Tyler and I worked this out on one of those trips to Utah one week where bottom of the funnel basically means branded terms like Less Annoying CRM, middle of funnel means like basically the product that you offer, but non-branded, so in Tyler's case, small business CRM, , and then TOFU is basically something that a small business might search in general, like a,  small business tools.For TOFU content to work, it has to be so creative  and it is truly throwing darts, blindfolded against a dark, like after being spun 10 times at a dartboard, it really is entrepreneurial work.Whereas like  MOFU and BOFU, especially with where you are now, it's blocking and tackling, it's... what was that saying  that you brought to the podcast once was like, get it to 70% or 90%, or I don't know what it was, but yeah, once you get it to that point, it feels like MOFU and BOFU for where you are,  are there and it's about optimization and doing more of what's already working versus trying to figure something out.Swyx: [00:01:24] I think it's an interesting mental model, which I wish that I had in my previous work, The main idea is tofu. Content is the viral content that everyone wants to read. But doesn't necessarily connect to your particular business or brand and MOFU and BOFU. Further down the funnel where people are more and more interested in what you specifically are selling. So in the next clip, they talk about how tofu is actually damaging to your brand  It might help you go viral, but not actually help with any conversions. So they took it out of their website.  Tyler King: [00:01:54] Like right now, if you go to the blog on less annoying CRMs, like we just redesigned it a little bit for web flow. We used to have three sections.We  basically, we didn't call it this, but tofu, MOFU, and BOFU. And we basically removed tofu and the blog posts are still there, but there's not a section for it. We could maybe re-add it, but it just links off to Less Annoying business.  , Rick Lindquist: [00:02:12] TOFU content on your main product website is so dilutive to the brand.if it's not related to CRM it's not going to be on less annoying crm.com, which means when someone goes to last long crm.com, they're either like just poking around and saying what it's about, or they're a potential customer.Tyler King: [00:02:29] for example, to your point, it's so hard to measure conversion rates  from someone hitting your website to signing up for a free trial. Cause it's like, what if they were reading a blog post about whether or not to raise money for their startups?Like, should we really count that as a failure that they didn't sign up? So, yeah, I like that a lotSwyx: [00:02:45] As someone who works in developer marketing, I've had to deal with this quite a bit. When we were involved in debates on the company blog about whether the blog should be about the company or whether it should be about.  Anything that our customers care about, like front end development or the future of JavaScript. And basically there's a civil war  inside of the company. And I think that happens with a lot of companies. I think you also see the result of some companies going all out on tofu, like digital ocean and log rocket. And that's a very valid marketing strategy, but then to expect to mix it together with And BOFU content in the same blog. I think could be a very confusing content strategy. So this terminology really clear things up for me.

The problem is you are there NOW and you're hungry.  So often I see a first episode delivers nothing more than what amounts to be a table of contents for future episodes. Today, I'm talking with , the CEO and Co-Founder of , a simple CRM built just for small businesses. Tyler also co-hosts , where two founders talk about what it takes to build sustainable software companies.  One of the things I've struggled with as I've grown SaberSim was this guilt about not having more balance in my life and running the business like it's a sprint instead of a marathon. I ultimately want a business that gives me that balance in the long run but right now, it really feels like I need to sprint to get there. Some of that urgency is self-imposed, but I don't think all of it is. This conversation with Tyler helped me come to terms with the fact that a startup needs different things at different points in the business, and that's ok.  If you don't want to sprint forever, make sure you're working towards your ultimate goal, but don't feel bad about sprinting if that's what you have to do to get to the next stage. Tyler has built Less Annoying CRM into a multi-million dollar a year business and has learned a ton along the way. He has strong opinions but knows that they don't apply across the board and doesn't preach as though they do.  This was incredibly refreshing because everybody else, from DHH on one side to Tech Crunch on the other, makes it seem like it's all or nothing. Interview with Alex Haimann, Business Development | Less Annoying CRM  When I first started my virtual assistant business, Scrivener Solutions, about seven years ago, I knew right out of the gate that I needed a good customer database. I delayed in selecting a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system for two reasons. In this digital age, if you're in business, having a website is a requirement. Your website is your digital home. YOUR digital real estate. If you don't have a website and are solely using social media to share your message, consider your content on borrowed land. Your website paints a picture of who you are and what you stand for. It's a means of helping people to get to know, like, and trust you. Those who you resonate with, will do business with you. The consistent content you place on your website, along with your social media and email plans help start and grow relationships. All these digital avenues for communication with our clients make up our marketing foundation. If a website is so important, WHY did I steer my client NOT to build one for her business? In today's episode, I thought I'd pull the curtain back a bit and share tidbits of a recent consultation session I had with a client.   My client has a tough time with tech. It wasn't until about a year or so ago that she had gotten into the habit of opening and following up on her email. My client and I sat down together for about a two-and-a-half-hour intense session where we unwrapped her goals, her aspirations, and her fears.  She kept repeating that she wants to go online because there is such a need in the market for what she does. But as we went into more depth into the conversation, she really had no idea what being online meant or what that would look like. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having a clear picture at this point, after all, that is why we're working together.  Instead of a website, this is what I suggested… Intuitively, you'd think that the first thing I'd suggest to her was to create her website. After all, building an online platform starts with a website. During our conversation, we brainstormed on many possibilities of how she could scale her business. The possibilities excited yet overwhelmed my client. Recognizing that if we dove in too fast, she would be frustrated and give up on the whole online thing before she even started. Truth be told, I did tell her that she will have her website…but not now. First, we agreed that she needed to get comfortable with some aspects of using tech while at the same time helping her with her current sales and follow-up process. We are chunking things down so that working with tech isn't so intimidating to her. Our first mission is to set-up and train on how to use a CRM in her business. Last week, I attended the Less Annoying CRM user conference in St. Louis. Cute name, isn't it? Well, I think so. I have to say, it has been my experience that it is actually less annoying than other systems I've worked with. A CRM system is a powerful tool where you not only store your contacts, but it enhances your workflow. If you are only storing your contacts in your phone, as a Google contact, or even in an Excel spreadsheet, you are missing out on a huge efficiency opportunity by not using a CRM database. As virtual assistants, my team and I are flexible. We work with the systems our clients choose and use. Sometimes, our clients will solicit my advice as to what systems to implement or what systems I have experience with. If they are asking about a CRM, most of the time I recommend Less Annoying CRM. Some people are in industries where I may recommend an industry-specific CRM because of the features they offer that would be directly related to their industry. However, for the most part, Less Annoying CRM is great for the small business owner because: it has the essential features a small business need it has some customization it fills the need of most small business owners it's affordable and best of all, it's simple and less annoying to use My intent in today's podcast isn't to win you over in selecting a CRM for your business. My true intent is to go over the five reasons why going to live events boosts the growth of your business. You get out of your bubble You make new connections (i.e. friends) New perspective You learn stuff Renewed energy Mainly, I talked about the importance of going to a live event outside of your geographical area. I did touch on belonging to a local networking group. Both, I believe, are valuable. Another very important investment, I believe, is online education and online communities. Becoming a part of an online community helps you learn skills whereas you may not feel like you have the time to go to a traditional class. You can participate in forums or discussion groups and create conversations. You learn, not only from the instruction classes or coaching, but you learn from other participants and like a live event you gain perspective and renewed energy. Live events, local networking, and online community membership all serve the purpose of investing in yourself with education, perspective, and most of all making connections. I believe in working into your schedule a blend of all three. I'm glad I went to the Less Annoying CRM user conference. I can't tell you how pleased I am with the whole experience.
