In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

Time to get back on the bus for this follow-up to our theme episode last week - The Who's classic "Magic Bus", no less. We start with Pete Townshend's 1966 demo, which is cute & weird & British - that is, psychedelic. The first released version was by some guys called The Pudding, and it's got a Mose Allison/Georgie Fame vibe, according to Erik. The Who's first full-band version is third, and did you ever really think it's just a buncha pals putting on a little skit or pantomime with each other? A pick-scratchin' precursor to the rock operas that follow ... Finally, we discuss the famous "Live At Leeds" version where they put on the play for a payin' audience and Townshend explores the myriad possibilities of the guitar in the 1970s. Plus Roger Daltrey sexes the song up and cock rock is invented!!

1973 was a banner year for classic rock LPs. But from "Houses Of The Holy" to "Goats Head Soup", only one album that year rocked the loudest, hottest, and wettest: "Red Rose Speedway". Ok fine, it's not really a "rock" album. It might not even roll. But that doesn't prevent it from being an inventive and quintessentially Paul (uh, oh yeah, "and Wings") album. On its 50th anniversary, the UBP Living Un-Single pigeons extoll its many charms, in another patented, cliffhanger-laden multi-parter. #HyphenFest In Part 1 (read: "eye", obviously), they also consider:

WANNA KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE BACK IN THE DAY?LIVE AT LEEDS by The Who (Decca, 1970)The Who was one of the greatest live bands of all time, bar none, and this document proves it. In 1970 they were at the height of their powers, having just pulled off the coup of creating the first “Rock Opera” Tommy. They followed that miracle up with a massive US tour with the intention of recording the performances in order to put out a killer live album next. However, a burnt out Pete Townshend was reportedly not in the mood to be sorting through all those recordings to choose the best cuts, so he regrettably told the engineer to “burn all the tapes”. As a compensatory gesture, it was decided to schedule a two night gig in northern England, at The University of Leeds, to record those concerts (without audience noise), and release the results. And, wow. This momentous outing, combining their hit singles, cuts from Tommy, and old rockabilly has been preserved for the ages, a portrait of the original lineup of one of Rock's most exciting combos at their absolute pinnacle. The original 1970 release distilled the results into 6 supersonic cuts, culminating in a scorching 16 minute collage of “My Generation.” For my generation this record, with its sly facsimile of a stamped bootleg cover, captivated every nerve ending in our bodies. All during my freshman year at the University of Iowa Pete Townshend's power chords, leaping off of his SG Gibson, in “Summertime Blues,” reverberated throughout my dorm hallway, day and night. Every fledgeling guitar player, dreaming dreams of Rock n Roll glory, tried to jam on that riff, as we had, 4 years earlier, on the Trogg's “Wild Thing” or Van Morrison's “Gloria.”Although those halcyon springtime days of youth are long past, those power chords still resonate with the same immediacy - forever fresh, forever torrid.

**This episode is dedicated to the life of our friend Frank Stolli who was taken away from us way too soon. Miss you already...** One of the most revered live albums in the history of music is The Who's Live At Leeds record. The album cover itself was an inspiration to Pearl Jam's Vault collection cover art, but even more than that, the entire performance from the record can be traced back to elements of Pearl Jam's live act. They'd mention in this show that they were only able to properly play the city of Leeds once before this (It was actually Bradford 92, not the 2006 Leeds Festival in Weatherby) so this night was an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the band's biggest influences on their career. There are 3 Who songs played, alongside references (a Young Man Blues tease) and nods (Breakerfall, which has an intro inspired from I Can See For Miles) that show that the band had fulfilled a dream by playing on this stage. With 22 main set songs and 36 in total, many taken from the serious collector's collection, this set is a 3-hour marathon of amazing performances, positive vibes and a connection with the crowd leaving memories lasting lifetimes. It couldn't have come at a better time as the band was next to finishing the European leg of the 2014 tour giving them the ability to take a deeper dive into the underutilized albums. Let's put it this way, No Code, Binaural and Riot Act had more representation than Vitalogy... which featured one song from the record, rarity Tremor Christ. As this show prospers from the more obscure, to add a few more Yield's Push Me Pull Me and the Stone Gossard sung Don't Gimme No Lip amongst others, it also fully encompasses everything you want from a Pearl Jam show. Playful banter, unexpected moments and interactions and emotional tributes that had the crowd hanging on every note. Punk singer Matthew Brennan (currently in Deep Pockets) and fellow music nerd Scott Floman (author of The Story Of Rock and Soul Music: Album Reviews and Lists and Greatest Underrated Guitar Solos) have joined forces to talk about music. The first several episodes will feature NCAA Tournament type brackets (one each for the '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s) that will attempt to determine the greatest rock band/solo artist of all-time. We spent a fair amount of time on choosing which of the 64 bands/solo artists should be entered, the seedings/match ups, and of course the winners, but the actual conversations about the match ups was 100% spontaneous, and we did minimal editing afterwards (Matt did all the technical work there so thanks Matt!). In other words, what you hear is what you get, but we'll try to correct some obvious mistakes we made via the Notes section below. Matchups for this episode: (1) The Beatles vs. (16) Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Sometimes Young) (2) Elvis Presley vs. (15) Cream (3) Bob Dylan vs. (14) The Byrds (4) The Rolling Stones vs. (13) The Doors (5) Jimi Hendrix vs. (12) The Band (6) The Beach Boys vs. (11) The Velvet Underground (7) The Who vs. (10) Simon & Garfunkel (8) The Kinks vs. (9) Creedence Clearwater Revival Notes for this episode: To be clear, we slotted bands in particular decades based on when they peaked artistically (though we made some exceptions for the '80s which you'll see later). However, the winner of each match up is based on their entire career, not just that decade. Scott completely botches the word “coronavirus”! Scott incorrectly contradicts Matt about how the winners of each match up are chosen. Ignore that part! The winners were somewhat objectively picked, though obviously our personal preferences will inevitably come into play as well. Scott incorrectly called Elvis' “Can't Help Falling In Love” by the title “Can't Stop Falling In Love” – same sentiment but wrong word. Scott completely botches trying to say “sadomasochism” – should've just stuck with S&M! Scott incorrectly said that David Crosby left The Byrds during the recording of the fourth album. He was thinking of the right album, but The Notorious Byrd Brothers was actually the fifth Byrds album, not fourth (that was Younger Than Yesterday – both of these are Scott's favorite Byrds albums, BTW). Most of Cream's studio songs were 3-4+ minutes, not 2 minutes. And by pioneering live improvisation, we meant specifically for rock bands; that practice was already common for jazz bands. Cream was also one of the first power trios which we failed to mention. When talking about The Band-Dylan connection, we should've mentioned The Basement Tapes as well (though maybe we do so in a later episode). Also, although The Band peaked early on the first two albums, they did have other high-quality albums thereafter as well. Nico was only on the first Velvet Underground album (not “albums”) called The Velvet Underground & Nico. The original “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” was actually by Gladys Knight & The Pips, the more classic version everyone is familiar with by Marvin Gaye came after that. When discussing The Who's live prowess we should've also mentioned Live At Leeds, considered by many to be the greatest live album ever.

In the 70th episode of our podcast, RBP's Zooming triumvirate talk about the Who's Live at Leeds — "the greatest live album ever made," in many people's H.O. — as it reaches its half-century. Referencing Geoffrey Cannon's unabridged Guardian review from May 1970, Mark & Barney relive memories of seeing the Who live and — with Jasper — explore what made the band such a uniquely powerful live unit. The two other giants of '60s British pop feature in free pieces by KRLA Beat's Nikki "Eden" Wine, who attempts to explain Beatlemania in 1965 and hangs around a Rolling Stones session in Hollywood in 1966. Mark puts "the Beat" ("America's Pop Music NEWSpaper") into historical context and describes how some of its key female contributors wound up on RBP.A passionate fan of Ron Sexsmith's for 25 years, Barney intros his own 2011 audio interview with the self-effacing Canadian. Se encuentra incluido en el libro 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Our first episode saw the band rise from humble beginnings all the way to 1969, when The Who had somehow made themselves world famous for writing a rock opera about a physically challenged boy with a talent for... pinball? Of course, you'd celebrate such a feat with a tour of revered opera houses and then record a live album in a glorified school cafeteria, wouldn't you? I mean, it just makes sense.Join host Marc With A C as he traces the connection between the The Who emerging on the global stage, while the members themselves used their newfound power to explore their own interests in solo records. If you thought Tommy was a lofty premise, well then you don't know "Lifehouse". We explore the unfinished project which would have predicted the internet in 1971; the rock-redefining music that came out of it, and much more: Live At Leeds, Smash Your Head Against The Wall, Who's Next, Who Came First, Whistle Rhymes, Daltrey, and Rigor Mortis Sets In!
