Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2024 110:00

The book Our Next Reality: How the AI-powered Metaverse Will Reshape the World is structured as a debate between Alvin Wang Graylin and Louis Rosenberg, who each have over 30 years of experience in XR and AI. Graylin embodies the eternal optimist and leans towards techno-utopian views while Rosenberg voices the more skeptical perspectives while leaning more towards cautious optimism and acknowledging the privacy hazards, control and alignment risks, as well as the ethical and moral dilemmas. The book is the strongest when it speaks about the near-term implications of how AI will impact XR in specific contexts, but starts to go off the rails for me when they start exploring the more distant-future implications of Artificial Superintelligence at the economic and political scales of society. At the same time, both sides acknowledge the positive and negative potential futures, and that neither path are necessarily guaranteed as it will be up to the tech companies, governments, and broader society which path of the future we go down. What I really appreciated about the book is that both Graylin and Rosenberg reference many personal examples and anecdotes around the intersection of XR and AI throughout each of their three decades of experience working with emerging technologies. Even though the book is structured as a debate, they also both agree on some fundamental premises that the Metaverse is inevitable (or rather spatial computing, XR, or mixed reality), and that AI has been and will continue to be a critical catalyst for it's growth and evolution. They both also wholeheartedly agree that it is a matter of time before we achieve either an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), but they differ on the implications of these technologies. Graylin believes that ASI has the potential to lead humanity into post-labor, post-scarcity, techno-utopian future reality where all of humanity has willingly given up all cultural, political, and economic control over to our ASI overlords who become these perfectly rationally-driven philosopher kings, but yet still see humans as their ancestors via an uncharacteristically anthropomorphized emotional connection with compassionate affinity. Rosenberg dismisses this as a sort of wishful thinking that humans would be able to exert any control over ASI, and that ASI would be anything other than cold-hearted, calculating, ruthless, and unpredictably alien. Rosenberg also cautions that humanity could be headed towards cultural stagnation if the production of all art, media, music, and creative endeavors is ceded over to ASI, and that unaligned and self-directed ASI could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons. Graylin acknowledges the duality of possible futures within the context of this interview, but also tends to be biased towards the more optimistic future within the actual book. There is also a specific undercurrent of ideas and philosophies about AI that are woven throughout Graylin's and Rosenberg's book. Philosopher and historian Dr. Émile P. Torres has coined the acronym "TESCREAL" in collaboration with AI Ethicist Dr. Timnit Gebru that stands for Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism and Longtermism. Torres wrote an article in Truthdig elaborating on these interconnected bundle of TESCREAL ideologies are the underpinnings of many of the debates about ASI and AGI (with links included in the original quote): At the heart of TESCREALism is a “techno-utopian” vision of the future. It anticipates a time when advanced technologies enable humanity to accomplish things like: producing radical abundance, reengineering ourselves, becoming immortal, colonizing the universe and creating a sprawling “post-human” civilization among the stars full of trillions and trillions of people. The most straightforward way to realize this utopia is by building superintelligent AGI.

Debbie Reynolds, "The Data Diva" talks to Unanimous AI's CEO, Louis Rosenberg. We discuss his 30-plus-year career in AI, Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR), his work on early spatial systems, his work with the US Air Force, NASA, and our mutual collaboration with XRSI. We also discuss the dangers of AI-generated content and conversational advertising, which can be tailored to individuals and become more persuasive over time. They also discussed the potential for AI to become sentient and have a will of its own, though this is not a current risk. AI agents have the potential to be extremely manipulative when it comes to collecting data and influencing people, especially when used in immersive worlds like XR. They can track and store data about people's behavior and emotions and use AI to create models that predict how people behave and feel in different situations. This could create a persuasive influence that crosses the line from marketing to manipulation. Louis discusses the need for an agency to oversee AI technology, the dangers of AI-driven influence, and the need for transparency and strict rules around storing behavioral and emotional data. He also highlighted the potential for AI to manipulate people, particularly children, and the need for regulation to prevent this and hope for Data Privacy in the future.Support the show

This audio is based on a fictional narrative set in the near future and written by one of the founders of augmented reality and an expert in AI, Louis Rosenberg. It was performed by Oliver Bailey-Davies, Sam Garioch and Sarah Hansmann Rouxel from Tin Whistle Productions. It was produced and recorded by Simon Prince at Hot Source studios in Guernsey. Louis Rosenberg is campaigning for 'guardrails' to be put in place before new technologies develop and evolve to protect users. Metaverse 2030 is an example of 'useful fiction', stories which help explain important issues of the time and enable people to grasp otherwise mercurial concepts, such as the metaverse, artificial intelligence and augmented reality. Louis supports the ODPA's Project Bijou, a social initiative to engage people through storytelling, and kindly let us use his narrative which has been brought to life in the form of this spellbinding audio play. It is the perfect cautionary tale to entertain while educating people, and the message is particularly pertinent for young people who are perhaps most at risk from harmful, unregulated online behaviours. In some way this is a bigger question of relationships between marketing and any new technology. If there are no rules on how new technology can be used in marketing, you know that some companies will use it in a predatory way. In many cases, such use of technology is very profitable. And other companies have no choice but to do something similar, or they will be out of business. This also applies to marketers on the individual level. If an unethical practice is widely spread and accepted in our profession, it makes it extremely hard for an ethical marketer to avoid doing it, which creates an internal psychological conflict.

In this episode, Louis Rosenberg, CEO of Unanimous AI, illustrates what it means to live in a world of complete virtual and augmented reality: the metaverse. Louis has been working in this field since the late eighties, but technology has only caught up recently to make VR and AR widely accessible and not just something used for education purposes in the healthcare industry. With the rise of the Internet, interest in virtual reality dropped around the late nineties after a decade of being latent. The medical industry kept it alive with training simulators for doctors, as they were in demand and development. The smartphone, particularly the iPhone, was the catalyst for change that brought down the costs of processors, sensors, and flat panel screens, all of which allowed for VR headsets to be more accessible. With these devices and technology up-to-par, conversations and advancements around the concept of the metaverse skyrocketed, and Louis believes that just as the smartphone did, the metaverse will be weaved into our lives within the next ten years. He talks about two metaverses: the virtual reality world and the augmented reality world. The former consists of a world purely used for entertainment, the way we currently use television, while the latter is one where, by using lightweight glasses, information will be brought up from the virtual world interposed in our physical one. We live in a society where information is very valuable, so much so that humans are willing to trade their own data for access to more information. Louis is pushing for regulations in the upcoming augmented metaverse to avoid third-party entities to take advantage of it the way marketing has been through targeted ads. Listen to this episode to learn about Louis's journey with virtual and augmented reality and how he's taking a different approach with Unanimous AI to augment human abilities within the metaverse instead of replacing them with AI!

In this episode, Fabrizio Billi, Scientific Director at DOCSF, and Lee Grossman, CEO at OREF, moderate a discussion around six papers on sensors, extended reality, virtual reality, and augmented reality in orthopedics.  In the module about sensors, they welcomed Jeffrey Lotz, Vice Chair of Research in Orthopedic Surgery at UCSF, and Cory Calendine, an orthopedic surgeon, where they review three papers on electronics being used as diagnostic and therapeutic tools, stretchable and suitable fiber sensors for wireless monitoring of connective tissue strains, and sensor-embedded fracture plates to quantify fracture healing. For them, this technology has still a long way to come but will be passively delivering data insights effectively. During the second module, discussing the papers about XR, VR, and AR, Fabrizio and Lee are joined by Sigurd Berven, Chief of Spine Service at UCLA, and Louis Rosenberg, CEO at Unanimous AI. The four of them also discuss three papers about trauma patient care simulation that uses extended reality technology in a hybrid emergency room, clinical accuracy through augmented reality, and orthopedic navigation by an AR platform. Even though this seems to be where this XR/VR/AR technology is heading, they all agree that the accuracy is compromised sometimes, and there is space for improvement. Listen to this episode for two very interesting modules on how sensors, extended, virtual, and augmented reality are being developed to assist orthopedic patients and doctors!

Once you find the perfect #handbag, you hate to see it go. It starts with a scratch here and there, and then the zipper stops working. Pretty soon, that favorite bag is too embarrassingly shabby to carry. But there's hope for it yet. We were honored to have an amazing conversation with the Co-Owner of the Historic NYC handbag #repair store, Artbag which was founded by Hillel Tenenbaum in 1932, a former professor at The Fashion Institute of Technology. He had a passion for perfection instilled into his son-in-law and future business partner, Louis Rosenberg. Rosenberg, a tinsmith by trade, brought his knowledge of metals and quality artistry to Artbag. He was considered the king of "quality control" well before it was a catchphrase in today's society. About The Guest: In 1993, Donald Moore, protégé of Hillel Tenenbaum and business partner of Rosenberg, purchased the business. Mr. Moore began his career at Artbag in 1959. He worked alongside Mr. Tenenbaum for over two decades, learning pattern making and handbag construction. The knowledge enabled Moore to create new styles and recognize flaws and potential issues with the designs of other handbag makers. This footprint of perfection has left an indelible mark on the current owner, Chris Moore. Chris began making bags with his father, Donald Moore, at an early age. Over the years, he acquired knowledge and expertise in the art of bag making and repair. The younger Mr. Moore has been called upon by many major publications as a source of information on handbag design and maintenance. We spoke about resiliency, excellent craftsmanship, and crushing the competition. Ok guys today we sit down with Louis Rosenberg.Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs….I would not be surprised for future generations to be referencing the brilliance of Louis Rosenberg in the same light. He is an innovator and by that I mean he sees things before they happen.  Not only does he think outside the box and see what could be…but he also makes that vision come into our physical reality.  To be able to see it…and then do it.  Talk about two simple concepts but very few ppl on the planet have done what Louis has done.In this conversation we get into his journey starting as a kid from Long Island, NY…how he was diagnosed with dyslexia but instead of dwelling on the difficulties of that dx he really leaned into the creative doors that it allowed his mind to open.  Which leads us into his journey West to study at Stanford where he gets his PhD… and then its an exploration of his path thus far… starting companies, creating technology, writing screen plays that have turned into films, and books….We talk about his latest endeavor which I personally am very excited about called Unanimous AI.  This part of the conversation begins around min 52 for anyone that likes to listen out of order.Unanimous AI is fascinating because Louis invented the technology to allow humans to leverage the swarm intelligence that is present in Nature.  The possibilities and potential positive contributions to humanity that will come out of this technology is really exciting.People are smart. We want to connect. We want to belong and contribute to something greater than ourselves in a positive way.  Louis leaned into these truths and listened to nature to build us a technology to access a collective super intelligence.  Thank you sir!Find Louis:Unanimous AIhttps://unanimous.ai/staff-item/louis-rosenberg-phd/Twitterhttps://twitter.com/LouisBRosenbergBooks:UPGRADE: The graphic novelhttps://amzn.to/340uj1cArrival Mindhttps://amzn.to/375LUHmTalked about in show:Ted Talkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu-RyZt_UasSportspicker AIhttps://unanimous.ai/sportsFeatured case Studies:https://unanimous.ai/case-studies/Oxford Sports forecastingStanford RadiologistMiami Heat season ticket holder perksXprizeUnited Nations predict food insecurity

Dr. Louis Rosenberg founded Unanimous AI to pursue a crazy idea – that we can amplify the intelligence of human groups by developing a new form of AI based on the biological principles of Swarm Intelligence.  The idea panned out, resulting in Swarm AI technology, a powerful method for amplifying group intelligence. It has been validated by over 20 academic papers, has been funded by NSF, and was named “AI Innovation of the Year” at South By Southwest. Dr. Rosenberg began his technological career at Stanford University where he earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees. His doctoral work focused on robotics, virtual reality, and human-computer systems. While working as a graduate researcher at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (Armstrong Labs) in the early 1990’s, Rosenberg created the ‘Virtual Fixtures’ platform, the first immersive Augmented Reality system ever built. Rosenberg then founded Immersion Corporation to pursue virtual reality technologies. As CEO of Immersion, he brought the company public (NASDAQ: IMMR) in 1999. Rosenberg also founded Microscribe, maker of the world’s first desktop 3D digitizer – the Microscribe 3D – which has been used in the production of countless feature films, including Shrek, Ice Age, and A Bugs Life (acquired in 2009). Rosenberg also founded Outland Research, a developer of advanced interfaces for mobile devices and augmented reality (acquired in 2012).  He has also worked as a tenured Professor at California Polytechnic (Cal Poly), teaching engineering, design, and entrepreneurship. A prolific inventor and researcher, Louis Rosenberg has been awarded more than 300 patents worldwide for his technological efforts in virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and human computer-interaction. He currently lives in sunny California with his wife and kids, as a longtime vegan and friend of all animals, big and small. In today’s conversation with us, Dr. Rosenberg explains the dangers of traditional AI, how swarm technology works in nature, and how we can apply it to making better decisions as a people group.    Key Takeaways Traditional AI is pushing to replace people with algorithms. But there is a way to keep people in the loop. The reason why birds flock, fish school and bees swarm is because they can make much better decisions in groups than they can individually. It helps their ability to survive. They are much smarter together than alone. Swarm AI is a new form of AI that connects people and algorithms to get significantly smarter, make much better decisions together than they could on their own, while keeping people as part of the process. When you want to use AI to solve a real problem you have to start with a good data set that is up to date and accurately reflects the problem you’re looking to solve. For most problems in the political, financial or business world it’s very difficult to get a data set that works. Most of the data used is out of date almost immediately, and it’s really only a simplification of what people think and feel. For example, how people click and connect on the internet does not reflect their true feelings. AI that makes predictions about people, what political messages are going to work or what products people are going to want, is all based on data that doesn’t reflect people’s true thoughts and feelings. It’s also infused with a lot of biases. For example, Google and Amazon have reduced you down to a set of data that it thinks you want, so when it wants to give you an advertisement it makes use of this estimation. Then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where you’ll probably buy something within its selections, which then reinforces its model. When this is applied to news, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and we end up polarizing a population. Polls are polarizing, finding and reinforcing differences. Nature does the opposite. In a school of fish, there are no leaders and no followers. Everyone is equal, and they make decisions about their survival together as a system. Over millions of years all the schools of fish that split in two, that couldn’t agree on which way to go, died out. The rest enabled through this process of swarm intelligence to make decisions that are optimized for the group as a whole. Whereas we humans make decisions in large groups but we’ve made this method of polling which is polarizing, showing our differences and reinforcing those differences. We then we become that school of fish that splits in two or just can’t make a decision. In a study with Stanford Medical School and a group of radiologists, when they worked together as a swarm, we reduced their diagnostic errors by 33%, vs if they made these decisions on their own or if they took a vote. In a study with Oxford University when a group of financial forecasters came together as a swarm, they were able to make 36% more accurate forecasts about the price of gold, oil and the stock market than when they were working alone. A swarm creates a much better mix of the group’s insights, plus it is interactive so individuals experience the group converging on the answer. There’s more buy-in and they are collectively more satisfied with the decision. Even if it’s a large group, everyone feels like they are consequential – like they had an impact – because they were working together and they experienced it. With a polling system, they put their answer in a black box and if it doesn’t come out the way they wanted, they feel like nobody listened to them. With swarming, when you have a group of people, you can make them smarter but you can also make them wiser where they make decisions that are really better for the whole group. Hierarchy hurts decision making. However, in a swarm everyone is equal and anonymous, and therefore honest, because they’re not trying to say what they think their superior wants to hear. With a swarm, the group can prioritize a set of issues in a way that will be more agreeable to the whole group than if they just argue about it, take a vote or poll, or try to do it statistically. xPrize has used the software to get their visioneers together and prioritize the most significant problems they want to solve. Diverse groups make much better decisions than monolithic groups. In a study of sports, a group of diverse fans were significantly more accurate in predicting the games than the experts who were getting paid to do it as sports writers. People are smart and we shouldn’t replace them with algorithms. Yes AI is powerful, and we can’t lose people in the process, with their intuition, emotion and insight. Louis Rosenberg, PhD probably doesn't even know that he is one of my heroes. When I first found out about the work he is doing (see Unanimous.AI), it was exactly what I had envisioned for The Mosaic Swarm (A Dollar A Month Club that will one day solve problems that should no longer exist). This is a MUST LISTEN TO podcast. It is essential for anyone wanting to know about The Mission of The Mosaic to hear this conversation as well as for anyone who wants to get past the gridlock of government and business to find a new paradigm for decision making that is as old as time. Read of his work in these two paragraphs taken from the Unanimous.AI website, About Us page: Unanimous AI amplifies the intelligence of networked human groups, enabling significantly more accurate forecasts, assessments, decisions, evaluations, and insights. Using AI algorithms modeled on the biological principle of Swarm Intelligence, our award-winning Swarm® platform empowers business teams to quickly maximize their combined wisdom and converge on optimized solutions. At Unanimous AI, we believe people are smart – really smart. In fact, we believe the most important database on the planet is the diverse knowledge, wisdom, and insights housed within the billions of human minds distributed around the globe. Every one of us has over a million gigabytes between our ears, and we are continuously interacting with our environment, testing our hypotheses, reevaluating our assumptions, and updating our vast data-stores. It's incredible. . And yet, most AI companies are focused on replacing people with automated algorithms, supplanting human wisdom with oversimplified data-sets. To us, this is a misguided approach, especially for problems that have a human component. Instead of replacing people with AI, our mission is to connect people with AI, enabling networked groups to collaborate in real-time as super-intelligent systems, working to harness our combined knowledge, experience, insights, and intuitions in highly efficient and optimized ways. Most powerful moment for Danny: That moment in our conversation where I realised the technology already exists to allow the Mosaic Swarm to gather data and finance the solutions to problems that have no place existing in our world any more. Problems like Homelessness, Hunger, Education, Medical Care, Global Warming, Clean Drinking Water, Sex Trafficking, Equality and Slavery. Today, most AI companies are looking at how they can develop algorithms to replace people. Unanimous AI is different. Founded in 2014 by Louis Rosenberg, they approach AI from almost the opposite perspective, as we found out during a 30-minute conversation with Louis: "We start from the premise that people are really smart, they have knowledge, wisdom, insight, intuition." Louis believes that these fundamental human traits are missing from Big Data but do exist in the human database. "If you are a sports fan, you are watching games and developing your own intuition about how the teams are playing and what the momentum of the game is." Based on this premise and applying hive decision making lessons from nature (swarms of bees, flocks of birds, etc), Unanimous AI has developed AI technology which connects groups of people together to maximize the value of their knowledge and insights with impressive results. Not only has this innovative startup been able to accurately predict the winners of the Kentucky Derby & Premier League football results (https://unanimous.ai/epl-perfect/), but they have also applied the technology within businesses to help internal teams with sales forecasting, marketing predictions, and product development. They have also used their products to bring together swarms of customers helping companies to better understand their insights. https://unanimous.ai/ _______________________________________________________________________ Leave some feedback: • What should we talk about next? What if you could harness all the best wisdom - knowledge, experience, intuition - from a group of people and use it to make extremely accurate decisions and predictions? Would that be valuable for you? If the answer is yes, you must watch this interview.  A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from my friend Adrian Segar, who literally wrote the book on unconferences, discussing the wisdom of crowds sharing why an unconference would always be better than a conference designed using a conference curator, or one expert, who helped craft a vision for what a conference should be. And it got me thinking about an interesting option... And that option came from a segment I watched in an episode of the new Amazon Prime Video docuseries - it was just released February 22 - called This Giant Beast That is the Global Economy. I remembered one segment, in particular, featuring a researcher talking with the host, Kal Penn, about collective intelligence, using Swarm AI technology, that could harness all the best wisdom from a group of people and make extremely accurate decisions. And I wondered could this technology be used to make better conferences? Or, for associations of every industry facing tremendous change and disruption, could Swarm AI or hive intelligence help make strategic decisions about an organization’s mission? Anyone who sees value in small data, big data, qualitative and quantitative research, any leader who makes big decisions for a group of people needs to hear about our topic. So I reached out to the researcher and his company! Dr. Louis Rosenberg received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees from Stanford and his doctoral work focused on robotics, virtual reality, and human-computer interaction. As a researcher at the U.S. Air Force’s Armstrong Labs, he created the ‘Virtual Fixtures’ system, the first Augmented Reality platform ever built. He has been awarded more than 300 patents for his technological efforts. Dr. Louis Rosenberg is CEO and Chief Scientist of Unanimous AI, a company focused on amplifying the intelligence of networked human groups using AI algorithms modeled after natural swarms and today I am happy to welcome Louis to the show to talk with us more about these questions and so many others! When honey bees are faced with the existential decision on where to relocate their hive, that is to find the perfect environment in which their colony can survive for generations to come, how do they reach consensus? A honey bee's brain is smaller than a grain of sand and has less than a million neurons. Humans have 85 billion. However, researchers have found that honey bees pick the optimal solution over 80% of the time. This begs the question, what is the best way to accurately predict outcomes? Does the answer lie in nature? Ants, bees, birds, and fish all self-organize themselves without any single leader, to help make complex, sometimes life & death decisions, as a single organism rather than individuals. This is known as Hive Intelligence. Louis Rosenberg, CEO & Founder of Unanimous AI, provided insights into how this can be used by humans in real-world applications on the TED stage (you can see his full talk here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu-RyZt_Uas&t=794s). This is not voting. Instead of having a one person, one vote system, the relevant intelligence of all individuals in the network combines to give a group intelligence or a brain of brains! How can you tap into this Swarm Intelligence from large groups to make better decisions, from customer experience to what is going to happen next with your products & services? How would you even get a group of people or robots to co-operate together in a dynamic way which adjusted in real-time? Radhika Nagpal discusses how you can program rules to allow organisms to self-organize and react to the environment they see at TED (www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHgVR0lzFJc&t=300s). Autonomous cars will almost certainly use this tool in the AI kit to function, that is the ability to use Swarm Intelligence to self-organize themselves based on the environment around them, as Magnus Egerstedt shows in this video (13:50, www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULKyXnQ9xWA). Louis Rosenberg, Ph.D., founder, chief scientist and CEO of Unanimous AI (unanimous.ai), delivers an insightful overview of the many ways that AI is improving human intelligence and yielding higher quality outcomes in many industries.   Rosenberg is a seasoned scientific mind and has been instrumental in the success of many companies, public and private. He founded Unanimous AI as a means to further his interests in the study and development of collaborative systems, artificial intelligence (AI), as well as human-computer interaction. Rosenberg received a bachelor's and master's degree from Stanford University and then went on to complete his Ph.D., also at Stanford. He has spent many years developing for robotics, human-computer systems, and of course, virtual reality—an area of particular interest.    Rosenberg discusses his extensive background in artificial intelligence, and human intelligence, and the bridge between. While he states that society often worries about people being replaced by algorithms, he underscores that people are actually very smart, and the goal is to use AI to amplify human intelligence. He discusses the use of groups… a swarm functionality as he calls it. In a swarm system, people can answer questions to a problem together, which increases overall accuracy. The AI can measure general confidence level, etc. and help to zero in on the most accurate answers to a question or problem. Regarding medicine, doctors are able to reduce errors significantly by using swarm / collective intelligence. Ultimately, people are smarter collectively than on their own, and AI is helping this to become a reality in business and industry.   Rosenberg talks about the major companies, small businesses, universities and more that are taking advantage of swarm technology. As he explains, human knowledge provides an edge and AI is amplifying this significantly. He details some of their work implementing swarm-based predictive insights for upcoming products, entertainment, etc. The tech expert expounds upon their innovative technology and the many ways that everyone can get involved and utilize the swarm concept to increase their results, outcome, knowledge, etc. Additionally, Rosenberg discusses how predictive technology can help manufacturers better understand their markets.    As a noted expert in his field, Rosenberg has been awarded an astounding 300+ patents globally for his contributions to innovative technology in the areas of virtual and augmented reality, AI, and of course, human computer-interaction.

The theme of this podcast is product innovation, and in particular how the combination of AI and people can create value beyond the sum of its components. My guest on this week’ podcast is Louis Rosenberg, CEO of Unanimous.AILouis is a technologist, prolific inventor, entrepreneur, and writer. He attended Stanford University, where he earned his bachelors, masters, and PhD degrees. His doctoral work focused on robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, and human-computer interaction, and resulted in the Virtual fixtures system for the U.S. Air Force, the first immersive Augmented Reality system ever built. In 2014, he founded Unanimous A.I., an artificial intelligence company that enables human groups to amplify their collective brainpower by forming real-time "hive minds" modeled after natural swarms. Unanimous AI became well known in 2016 when its Artificial Swarm Intelligence technology (Swarm AI) made a series of accurate predictions about world events, including predicting the Academy Awards, the Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl, and the rise of Donald Trump. This triggered me, hence I invited Louis to my podcast. We explore product innovation concept of swarm intelligence, and how this fills an important gap in the evolution of AI.Here are some of his quotes:“We amplify the intelligence of human groups by connecting people together in real time, using AI algorithms to enable them to make more accurate forecasts, more precise predictions, better assessments, judgments and decisions. We use AI to turn network groups of people into artificial experts that can act as a superintelligence. There's actually a scientific name for that, called Swarm Intelligence. In nature, Swarm Intelligence is the reason why birds flock, fish school, and bees swarm. The inspiration for me was to say, "Well, if birds, and bees, and fish can get smarter together, why can't people do it?"The results that we started getting even early on were remarkable, that we could take a group of people and make them so much more accurate by connecting them together.”By listening to this podcast, you will learn three things:How big business problems can be solved instantly by leveraging the knowledge and wisdom of groups of people in combination with AIWhy we’ve underutilized the power of collaboration up to now, and how swarm intelligence takes it to the next levelThat we’re just scratching the surface with regards to how we can amplify human abilities – a mega opportunity for everyone.
