Howes, ljudboken ”The Secret History” från Harper Audio samt filmerna ”Less Than Zero”, ”American Psycho”, ”The informers” och ”The Canyons”.

If you thought The Last House on Needless Street was tricksy, just wait until you hear about Looking Glass Sound. This is Cat's ode to the Maine of Stephen King, the enigmatic narrators of Shirley Jackson and… well, a host of other comparisons that I foist upon her in the next hour.Above all that though – the book is so typically, inimitably Catriona Ward. It's a destined Gothic classic that takes the genre, crumples it into a ball before rewriting the whole thing. We cover the purpose of metafiction in horror, how writing a book is like falling in love, the eeriness of the Maine coast and her fascination with the Neverland Ranch. If that isn't enough Cat also tells us a ghost story that happened to her just the night before.Tricksy, very tricksy…as Gollum would say.EnjoyLooking Glass Sound was published April 20th by Viper Books in the UK and 22nd August by Tor Nightfire in the US.Other books mentioned in this episode include: Lunar Park (2005), by Bret Easton EllisThe Rules of Attraction (1987), by Bret Easton EllisThe Secret History (1992), by Donna TarttMy Other Life (1996) by Paul TherouxAny Human Heart (2002), by William BoydThe Haunting of Hill House (1959), by Shirley JacksonDeath of a Bookseller (2023), by Alice SlaterMrs March (2021), by Virgina Feito Support Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Richard was 6 years old when he was uprooted from a school in the United States to a Soviet school 700 miles East of Moscow. In 1988 the Soviet Union was opening up following Michael Gorbachev's policy of Perestroika and American firms began looking at the possibility of trading with the Soviet Union. It was politically and economically sensitive and his family was chosen to be sent to the USSR to open a factory in the industrial town of Nizhnekamsk in Tartarstan. They lived in a special apartment building designated for foreigners and Richard attended the local school. Being thrown in the deep end of a Soviet school was a shock to him and he had to adapt fast, not least by learning Russian. He describes his school experiences and the stark contrasts with his previous life. Despite the difference, he found being six years old in the Soviet Union in all, rather fun. There was a Lunar Park for us to go on rides, war-themed toys like tanks and soldiers even at school, and all sorts of mischief were had. Life in Nizhnekamsk was hard on his mother who had to stay at home a lot and found the whole experience painfully boring. Hosted on Acast. It is a rare occation when the author of cult books such as American Psycho and The Rules of Attraction releases his first novel in 13 years. For readers of Bret Easton Ellis's earlier books, The Shards has a familiar atmosphere, and he doesn't shy away from explicit descriptions of sex or violence. We are in early 80s LA, and the main character, Bret Ellis, is 17 and a senior at the prestigious private school Buckley. A charming new student in class challenges Bret's attempt to hide his attraction to men.But something darks lurks beneath the glossy surface. The story is told by a now middle aged Bret revisiting the fatal senior year when a serial killer appeared in LA. Leafing through his old yearbook, he notices the five classmates that are missing.Ellis likes to provoke, both in fiction and in public debate. The Shards is no exception. First published in serial format on Ellis's own podcast, the story is passed off as a memoir based on Ellis's own experiences, much like the earlier Lunar Park. As the serial killer moves ever closer to Bret's circle, the book also describes Bret's sexual and literary awakening, making it as much a story of the author's journey into writing. When Ellis visits the House of Literature for the first time, he is joined on stage by Emma Clare Gabrielsen. She has worked for many years as a journalist in Natt & Dag, DN and Norwegian broadcasting NRK, where her documentary on pedophiles earned her nominations for both Norway's premier journalist prize and Prix Europe's "European Journalist of the Year".

Vi pratar också om: John Carpenter, Vacancy, Repulsion, Upstairs Neighbor, Edgar Allan Poe, The Tell-tale Heart, Det skvallrande hjärtat, The Black Cat, Roman Polanski, Rosemary’s Baby, All of Them Witches, Isabelle Adjani, Mats Strandberg, Shining, Bret Easton Ellis, Lunar Park, Stephen King, Jay McInerny, American Psycho, Anders Fager, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Charles Bukowski, The Babadook, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nattvakten, George Orwell, 1984, Kafka, Processen, Slottet, Jacob’s Ladder, Combat Shock, William S. Burroughs, David Cronenburg, Naked Lunch, Peter Weller, Darren Aronofsky, Pi, The Matrix, Marie Hermanson, Himmelsdalen, The Thing, The Blair Witch Project, Det okända, Mikael Hjort, Ruben Östlund, Besökarna, Andreas Marklund och Skördedrottningen.
As of the night on which this podcast was recorded, Greg had not yet played Cards Against Humanity (CAH). This recording was supposed to usher in a new era for Greg. However, as of the end of the podcast Greg had STILL not played CAH. This goes to prove the following, the combination of Greg plus Christopher plus Heather plus Jeff plus copious spirits equals a night of circuitous, tangential, humorous, improvisational-jazz-like circumlocution. Do not worry, D2Dreeps, in the upcoming weeks you will have a front row seat to Greg’s inaugural CAH shenanigans. For tonight? We ask and discuss the following questions: Have you seen Deadpool? (You should.) Arrested Development? (I haven’t. Should I? Jeff seems to think so.) What’s your favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor? (Mine is Chocolate Therapy.) Have you read The Walking Dead? Preacher? Sandman? Anything by Alan Moore? (Again, you should.) Do you love Jared Leto or hate Jared Leto, or do you even give a shite? (Also, is it Lee-toh? Or Leh-toh?) Have you been excited or worried, or both (…or neither…) about the prospect of AMC, Seth Rogan, and Evan Goldberg bringing “Preacher” to television? (As of the night on which this recording occurred, it had not been released. As of the release of this recording, there have been two episodes. I think it’s brilliant. It seems to honor the canon.) Speaking of, do you agree with Jeff that, in bringing any graphic novel or comic to screen, you must follow this golden rule: Don’t fuck with the canon? (Do you also agree that one should not fuck a cannon?) Have you read Brett Easton Ellis (…and Lunar Park in particular, ‘cause it’s quite good…), Italo Calvino, Etgar Keret, and/or the short stories of Stephen King? (Short stories, people…we like ‘em!) Are you claustrophobic? (If so, don’t visit the aforementioned Etgar Keret’s home, and don’t take the elevator up the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.) Next week, Cards Against Humanity, I promise. But for now, we present to you, “Breaking Deadpool (Chirdonathon, pt 3)” P.S. Oh, and hey, if you shop on amazon and you want to support Driven 2 Drink just a little bit more, do us this favor…at the end of the URL of any item you purchase, just tag this on: /?tag=dritodri-20 When you add that tag, amazon knows we sent you and that you love us, and they give us a small percentage of whatever you spend on the dollar. (It’s like 5%, but that adds up!) So thanks again! P.P.S. The music! We’re giving you two gorgeous pieces of music by Ben Harper, the first, “You Found Another Lover (I Lost Another Friend),” with the incomparable Charlie Musselwhite, and the second, “In the Lord’s Arms,” which makes a man cry every time. P.P.P.S. A man has no name. (source)
Bret Easton Ellis is still the guy who wrote Less Than Zero, American Psycho and Lunar Park, but he's also way different than that guy from decades ago. Bret and Marc compare notes on evolving with age and trying to keep it all together. Plus, Marc's old buddy Mick Foley drops by to talk about his new life as Santa Claus, as documented in the new movie I Am Santa Claus. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Imperial Bedrooms (Vintage) The iconic novelist Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho, Less Than Zero) returns to Skylight Books to read and sign his latest book, Imperial Bedrooms, just out in paperback! “Brutally conceived, and effectively done. . . . There is no doubt that Ellis retains the ability to startle and disquiet.” —The Times Literary Supplement (London) "Enough talk of [Ellis's] literary genius, let's call him what he really is: a terrific horror writer. . . . An absolute creepfest [and] a festival of panting paranoia." --Chicago Sun-Times Bret Easton Ellis is also the author of American Psycho, Glamorama, The Informers, Less Than Zero, Lunar Park, and The Rules of Attraction. His work has been translated into twenty-seven languages. He lives in Los Angeles. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS MAY 19, 2011.
Lunar Park (Knopf) Beginning as an autobiography, Lunar Park turns into a classic horror novel. The haunted house, however, is spooked by Bret Ellis- personal demons, and the past comes alive in creepy ways that go way beyond autobiography.
