Recorded on 31 October 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Benjamin Bronnert Walker An historical approach to faith-based healthcare can offer insights into how government, medical groups, public health authorities, international organisations, and spiritual communities interact over the long term. Historical analysis provides a vital (but often under-utilised) explanatory model for developing a coherent understanding of how and why faith-based providers have shaped health over many decades. Looking back allows us new insights into intractable debates as we forge shared paths forward. By interrogating the competing actors in a health landscape such as Ghana across a century of large-scale political, economic and cultural changes, we can explore how faith-based providers have informed what global health has become. Dr Benjamin Bronnert Walker is a historian of global health and religion, and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is the Strategic Portfolio Manager for the Diocese of Leeds in the Church of England and coordinates the Anglican Health and Community Network, the official global health network of the Anglican Communion. His book 'Religion in Global Health and Development: The Case of Twentieth Century Ghana' was published in April 2022 by McGill-Queen's University Press. Despite the host of challenges facing skilled nursing providers, Mission Health is not sitting idly by, according to Delker. The Florida-based operator has invested more than $1 million in its own workforce to recruit and retain workers, including an in-house certified nursing assistant program that has resulted in a significant reduction in CNA agency use since its launch. In addition, Delker told SNN that feverishly engaging in conversations with leaders from the nine states that they operate in has been paramount to the company's success. Mission Health operates 47 skilled nursing, senior living, assisted living and short-stay rehabilitation facilities across nine states. When folks think about ethics common thoughts relate either to decisions about daily behaviors or to university philosophy or theology departments developing and discussion the merits of various ethical theories. There are organizations where the daily activity so regularly bears on ethical situations that they employ ethicists to help the organization navigate decisions that must be made regarding ethically infused contexts. One such type of organization is the hospital and one such context is medicine and medical ethics. My guest today is The Reverend Mary Caldwell. Gov. Roy Cooper and other advocates of Medicaid expansion in North Carolina argue consistently that expansion would not cost any state taxpayer dollars. A new analysis from the John Locke Foundation and the Ohio-based Buckeye Institute call that claim into question. A model based on enrollment estimates and Medicaid costs in expansion states suggests N.C. budget writers would face a gap of $119 million to $171 million to cover new Medicaid costs. Jordan Roberts, John Locke Foundation health care policy analyst, highlights key points from the new Medicaid expansion analysis. A Superior Court judge recently struck down Wilmington’s restrictions on vacation rental property. The court decision represents a victory for plaintiffs David and Peggy Schroeder. But it leaves unresolved constitutional claims raised by the Schroeders’ attorneys from the Institute for Justice. Before the ruling, IJ constitutional law fellow Adam Griffin explained why the group had taken the Schroeders’ case. U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., raised recent questions on Capitol Hill about the controversial investigation into Russian influence on the 2016 election. Since March, more than 9,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in BPR's Western North Carolina listening area. Most of those cases end up at the region's biggest hospital, Mission in Asheville. Dr. William Hathaway is Chief Medical Officer there. He says the hospital has been following CDC guidelines around patient testing. "One of the places where we were most concerned about testing has to do with pre-procedural testing. So when you come into the hospital, who can you test and who should you test?" asks Hathaway, who is also senior VP for the NC Division of HCA. Hathaway is referring to testing patients who are at Mission Hospital for surgery unrelated to COVID-19. When a patient comes in, staff follow an algorithm to decide to test patients for COVID-19 before they go under the knife - unlike some other hospitals around the country that test every surgery patient. This strategy is outlined in a study published in the American Journal of Medicine that follows 5 HCA Healthcare

In February, Attorney General Josh Stein sent HCA Healthcare a letter requesting answers by this week about allegations the healthcare system is not following through agreements it made when the for-profit firm purchased Mission Health last year. Those answers were due at the end of March - this past Tuesday. Stein says he has given HCA more time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "I do not want to get in the way of their focus, in case there is an outbreak in Western North Carolina," says Stein. "I think by the end of the month we should expect a full range of answers unless, of course, if there is a big crisis in Western North Carolina then we would revisit that." The main points Stein wants addressed deal with HCA's charity care policy and access to sexual assault nurse examiners. Stein says he also wants to know more about billing issues. He says HCA has sent out refunds but he wants to know the scope. "We want to get a clear sense of how many patients did this impact, what was the

Our heart beat can give a lot of insight to our heart health. This is especially true when it comes to atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, impacts approximately five million Americans with 200,000 new cases each year. Our featured guest in this episode of My Healthy Life, Jason Lappe, MD, says with Asheville being a retirement community, there are a lot of people in our region impacted by this condition. AFib is usually progressive – by age 65, it’s estimated that 10 percent of the US population lives with AFib and by age 80, about 20 percent of the population. Here in western North Carolina, patients with AFib have access to some of the highest quality and most innovative heart care in the nation with Mission Health’s heart program and services. “A lot of what I do, particularly for faster heart rhythms, is helping people feel better – improving people’s quality of life and that’s why I find my job so rewarding,” Dr. Lappe shares. Mission Heart has been a regional leader in heart care and cardiothoracic surgery for more than 40 years. Our award-winning teams, including Asheville Cardiology Associates, maintain a high level of specialized clinical experience and expertise to provide a team-oriented, comprehensive approach to care for patients with heart issues. In October of 2018, the Boyer family planned a small family reunion in Asheville. Coming all the way from northern Michigan, they did all of the things that tourists do when visiting our travel-friendly city that welcomes people to the mountains – they stayed at cabin, enjoyed meals at one of the many award-winning restaurants and a trip to the Biltmore House; and it wouldn’t be a family reunion without a round of Frisbee golf. They fell in love with Asheville and the people in it – even after an unexpected event left Doug Boyer in Mission Hospital for over a week. Initially thinking Doug wasn't going to make it, the family called in the rest of the family to fly into Asheville immediately to cheer Doug on. Kathy, Doug's wife, knew her husband was going to pull through. It’s been nearly four months since Doug’s heart incident, and you can hear in his voice that he gets stronger every day. We talked to Doug and his wife Kathy a few weeks ago and are touched by their story. We are sharing it with you in this episode of My Healthy Life, a podcast by Mission Health. In this episode, hosts Reed Smith and Chris Boyer discuss ways in which organizations can begin applying the online tools, systems and processes to support crisis communication, and provide first-hand advice on how best to assess and respond to certain crisis.
