This podcast episode is about how to practice saying “No” and defending your calendar. Sometimes that “No” is to someone outside of you and sometimes that “No” is to you, yourself as the business owner. As you're building your business there are so many things that are vying for your attention, from what is happening in your personal life, to all of the things that you need to get done in your business. The most important thing for you in the beginning stages is to keep the main thing, the main thing and you do that by saying, “no.” Because when you say “YES” to one thing you’re indirectly saying “NO” to another. If you say YES to a night out with girlfriends, what is the trade-off, what are you indirectly saying NO to? Where your focus goes, energy flows, and results will show. It is easy to say you’re going to work on your business every Monday and Tuesday night from 6-8 PM, but when the invite to do a girls’ dinner comes across via text, then what? The goal isn’t to say your decision is right or wrong, the goal is to bring awareness to the decision so that you can make an intentional decision knowing what the trade-offs are.In this episode, you'll hear...Reasons why we don't say noWhat happens when we don't say noWhere to start and what to expectFinal notesInsights:“The most important thing for you in the beginning stages is to keep the main thing, the main thing and you do that by saying, “no.” Because when you say “YES” to one thing you’re indirectly saying “NO” to another.”“The goal isn’t to say your decision is right or wrong, the goal is to bring awareness to the decision so that you can make an intentional decision knowing what the trade-offs are.““No one else will protect or defend our calendars or goals for us, we must do that.”“Do your best to make decisions ahead of time and not in the moment.”“Make decisions based on what you truly want and your goals.”

How to Say "No" Without Feeling Guilty

Why is it so hard to say "No?" What is it about saying "no" that triggers guilt in us. How can we confidently say no without ever having to feel guilty again? We talk to Julia Kristina, a clinical therapist, researcher, master coach and the founder of the Shift Society who helps individuals break through the crap to live more fulfilling lives. She’s a regular speaker at regional and national conferences on mental wellness and mindset and she says that guilt is maladaptive when we're trying to be something we are not in order to control someone else's thoughts. This can be the key driver in holding us back in saying no to honor oneself and associating our value and worth from our decision. Julia gets very tactical with us on how to say no without feeling guilty, including the language we use. You'll learn so much more, including: 3:18 - Understanding healthy adaptive guilt vs. maladaptive emotional guilt associated with saying "no"6:22 - The 'Mother Wound' - the source of so many "guilt trip" experiences9:22 - How so many of us will choose to do things we don't want to do because we rather feel resentment than guilt13:02 - What is true generosity. And, why the better we are with our boundaries, we are more generous. 16:05 - How having healthy boundaries makes us more flexible. 18:53 - What is real self love and how loving yourself is the least selfish thing you can do. 21:25 - Tactical steps to say "No" without feeling guilty21:40 - First, separate not liking your decision from your value and worth 22:17 - Why we can't say no without feeling guilty - we want other people to think a certain way so we can feel okay. 22:44 - How to honor relationships when saying "no" 25:40 - Why you don't need to explain yourself too much when saying "no" 31:25 - Why it's superfluous to preface your "no" with "I'm sorry" 32:02 - How saying "sorry" when saying "no" is more for yourself so you don't feel guilty34:51 - How to determine what you really want to say if you're vacillating between the "yes" and "no" 43:30 - Julia's one piece of advice to her younger self to live fully in the present and always on her own termsTo connect with Julia Kristina and learn and/or join her Shift Society, click here - https://juliakristina.com . That way, you won’t waste time pursuing referrals who won’t yield you the results you want.Make referrals part of your initial conversation. When you start working with someone, ask them to agree to a simple deal. If you do a great job for them, they will tell others about it.Cash in those compliments. If someone is pleased with your work, thank them, and say something along the lines of, “It’s great to hear that you are happy with your experience. Would you happen to know of others who could benefit from our services?”Exceptional service. You won’t succeed at getting any referrals at all unless the quality of your service goes above and beyond the standard for your industry. Your farm should shine.Mutually Beneficial - focus on trying to seek referrals for things where the value is very obvious that it’s two ways.  Custom work would be a good example.  New ground is more of a one way value to the farmer, at least that’s how it’s often viewed.Develop a referral system. You get what you give. Pay it forward by providing referrals to businesses and partners yourself. People will be more inclined to give you referrals in exchange. Plus, contributing to the greater good of your community will help to bolster your reputation.Integrate your referral requests with other marketing strategies. Need some ideas? Go listen to episode #26Network, network, network! Try to make the most out of every networking opportunity. Plan what you will say in advance. Make it a goal to talk to at least three people at each event. Tell them about your business, pass out business cards.  They’ll likely share what they’ve learned with their friends. Try to make yourself as interesting and enthusiastic as possible—this is what people are drawn to! Once you network, make sure to follow up with a networking email to keep the lines of communication open.SummaryIt all starts with knowing your operation and what you want to become.  Be clear with yourself and others about the goals for your farm.  Identify the people you want on your team to fit and fill the weaknesses you have.  Having personality types different than yours is a great way to get the whole picture.  Create a strategy for asking them to join your team and be prepared to sell yourself to them.  Once you get a team together be over prepared for the first meeting and each subsequent meeting to keep the quality of talent needed on your advisory team around.ChallengeOur challenge is just for you to simply start this process if you haven’t already put a team in place.  Make that list of people you’d like to network with and get referrals from.If you have a team we challenge you to recruit another high profile-new face to your team for 2020-2021.RemindersRate, Like, Review, Share – this one especially because it’s for more than just farmersSend us your topic ideas and discussionsFarm4profitllc@gmail.com

Is there really such a thing as sexual addiction? Some professional counselors say there is, and some say there isn’t. I don’t know who is right on this issue, but I have a feeling that people are disagreeing on mere semantics. They are talking past one another, where there really is no substantive disagreement. I will leave the arguments on that to the professionals. But I have to admit that there is a real problem in our society with something that looks very much like an addiction to sex. Thanks to the internet, pornography is clean out of control. Of all the kids you know between the ages of, say, 11 to 17, how many of them would you say would accidentally be exposed to pornography on the internet? The answer: 9 out of 10—accidentally. If I point out to you that there are 8,000 new cases of sexually-transmitted diseases among teenagers, every day, would you agree that we have a problem? No? What if I add the hard fact that 20% of ninth graders have slept with four or more partners. Then would you agree that we have a problem? It is true to say that pornography is out of control in our society—and in the world, for that matter. But when we say that, we raise the specter of control. If we are to control it, who is the controller—the government? One of the things that is killing us is the way the courts are now interpreting the First Amendment. What is odd about it all is that for 200 years, we lived under the First Amendment and still managed to keep sex away from children. We kept it out of movies, radio, television, print—mostly. What do you suppose was the overriding social need that allowed us to interpret the First Amendment in such a way that we could control pornography? And why can’t we do it now? To answer that question, I have to change the subject for a moment.

Every time I say YES, when my answer is NO, I pay for it.”I’ve learned, you can pay for it financially, mentally, physically or all of the above. Saying yes when you should have said no, can certainly be a teaching moment. It doesn’t end once you’ve unlocked a new level in business. In this episode, Cindy discusses: Where the fear of rejection, of getting a “no” comes from and how it affects us as adults. Shifting your mindset to embracing the “no.” Stretching your boundaries and moving outside of your comfort zone. Going for the “no” and using that as momentum in your tasks.   Key Takeaways: Only through persistence and “failures” can we find success. “Sticks and stones can break my bones but no can never hurt me.” If you do the thing you fear, the fear will go away.  The fear of the unknown can be a powerful inhibitor. Going for a “no” answer is liberating! There is no wasted energy, wasted time, or wasted chances.    "As kids, we seemed less afraid of the word no, less afraid of failure. As kids, we got the message that if we were persistent enough, we'd get what we want. But somewhere along the line that got beaten out of us and we became afraid of rejection of those nos. Turns out that perhaps our instincts as kids were better on this front." —  Cindy Watson  Click here to get your free E-Book "No F.E.A.R. Well before we get there,  Do you break out in a sweat at the idea of having to negotiate on your own behalf for something you really want? If so, you’re not alone. Lots of people do … and women especially. Why is that? If you stress about negotiating, why the resistance? What holds you back from being the incredibly effective negotiator you could be?   I’m going to go out on a limb and posit that one factor holding you back is likely your fear of rejection … of getting a ‘no’. Where does that come from? What happened to our childhood ability to pester the heck out of our parents to get what we want? Remember those days? As kids, we seemed less afraid of the word ‘no’. Less afraid of failure. As kids, we got the message that if we were persistent enough, we’d get what we want. But somewhere along the line that got beaten out of us and we became afraid of rejection, of those ‘no’s’.  It turns out that perhaps our instincts as kids were better on this front.   Let’s explore the concept of failure for a moment. Thomas Edison ‘failed’ (let me put that word failed in air quotes) at creating the light bulb countless times before succeeding. In fact, it was only through those so-called failures, and his persistence and willingness to fail that he achieved success. Is he known for the purported failures? No. He’s lauded as a genius. Similarly, Abraham Lincoln purportedly failed twice in business and lost 8 out of 10 elections before becoming President of the United States. Do people remember Lincoln for those failures? No. He’s credited with abolishing slavery and considered by many to be one of … if not ‘the’ most influential U.S President in history. What if women suffragists had given up fighting for the right to vote after being told ‘no’? What if abolitionists like Harriet Tubman and the countless other brave women and men who fought against slavery had given up when told ‘no’?  You get the idea. What if your fear of failure, of rejection, of hearing the word ‘no’ is the very thing standing between you and your best self? Between you and your kick-ass negotiator? Between you and getting what you deserve – from the boardroom to the bedroom? Maybe what you need is a simple mindset shift. I invite you to take one of your age-old childhood adages and modify it to fit your needs today? Try on “sticks and stones may break my bones but ‘no’ can never hurt me”. Recognize that your failures are the bricks on the pathway to success. In fact, the only way to success is typically through failure. It’s through your failures that you learn, improve, grow and ultimately succeed. Maybe you just need to be willing to fail better. If you accept that fear of hearing ‘no’ is a factor contributing to your resistance to embracing negotiation, and we know that the best way to desensitize ourselves to the word is to get used to it, then how might we achieve that? How might you experience it so often that it loses its power over you? It’s said that if you do the thing you fear, the fear will go away. I’m not sure that’s always accurate. I bungy-jumped 4X – forward, backward, elevator (feet first) and tandem (with a buddy) and I can’t say the fear disappeared. But I did it. It got easier. If that’s the case, it makes imminent sense that you take active steps to numb yourself to the word ‘no’. Each time I jumped, I got a little more numb to the abject terror of standing on the edge of the bridge and seeing the jagged rocks, too close, below. Surely, if we can get numb to that, we can handle getting used to that little two-letter word: ‘no’. Because at the very least, the element of ‘unknown’ disappears, and fear of the unknown can be a powerful inhibitor. No doubt exposing yourself to receiving more ‘no’s in your life requires you to get outside your comfort zone. I was reminded of the limiting effects of comfort zones on a beach recently when I became entranced watching a hermit crab by my chair. It would pop up from its hole in the sand and skitter a few inches to the side, then stop. But as soon as each wave started toward shore the hermit crab scurried back to cower in its bunker, even though the waves never once came up to its hiding spot – not even close. I watched that poor little crab for ages and it never ventured more than a half-foot away from its hole. I could feel its desire. But I also felt its fear outweigh that desire over and over again. It made me realize that we lull ourselves into believing that our comfort zones are safe, when in reality they are self-imposed prisons. Those comfort zones will shrink and eventually suffocate us if we don’t venture outside them and risk living.  Do you want to live your life playing safe in a little comfort zone that never stretches your boundaries, that gets smaller and smaller so you can never be the biggest, best possible version of yourself? What if, instead, you made a commitment … today … to step outside your comfort zone? Are you open to the possibility of welcoming failure as a way to take you to the next level? To condition yourself to learn to hear ‘no’? What if, instead of avoiding rejection, you committed to seek rejection? Sounds crazy, right? But what if, in thinking about failure, rejection, and ‘no’, you opted to turn the paradigm on its head and instead of fearing it, you looked forward to it as a source of empowerment?   How? The answer is so simple it’s brilliant in its simplicity. Ask. Ask. Ask. Pick practice areas in your life where you’re willing to trial asking for what you want. And here’s the key. Don’t be tied or attached to getting a ‘yes’. In fact, as proposed by Andrea Waltz and Richard Fenton in their bestselling book, Go For No, instead of going for ‘yes’, actively go for ‘no’. Embrace the possibility of multiple rejections and set your targets for how many ‘no’ answers you need to get the number of ‘yes’ answers you want.     Sound confusing? Let me give you a simple example. If you want 10 new clients this week (or sales, or donations to a cause, or whatever you may be seeking) and you know that you’re likely to only get 10% of those you canvas to say ‘yes’, then don’t set your sights on achieving 10 yeses, but instead, flip that thought process on its head and set your goal to get 100 ‘no’s. That way, even as you get some ‘yeses’, you don’t slow down. You keep going for the ‘no’s. And when you hit the ‘no’s (as you invariably will), it won’t stop you – you won’t see it as failure because you’re going for those ‘no’s. In addition to desensitizing yourself to the ‘no’s, think how much more likely you are to hit a higher level. Better yet, you’ll lose all the angst and wasted negative energy that comes from being afraid of the rejection, afraid of the ‘no’s. Go for the no. It’s liberating. Such a simple concept and such a powerful tool to be able to get through that fear of failure to the fabulous success that’s waiting for you on the other side. Are you willing to put yourself out there and go for that ‘no’? To push past that fear of failure? Push past that fear of getting a ‘no’, knowing that your success lies on the other side of it. Once you desensitize yourself to hearing ‘no’ and rid yourself of that fear, look out world … you’ll be ready to level up to step into your power as the formidable negotiator you’re ready to be. I hope you got some value from that. If so, make sure to subscribe to the show. And share it with friends who you think would benefit and enjoy it. Feel free to grab the script in our show notes if you want to review this content another way. Until next time, go forth and negotiate your best life on your terms, so you can stop missing out and start getting more of what you want and deserve … from the boardroom to the bedroom.

FEEDBACK An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green QUESTIONS 1. Hello Jenn and Amanda! Thank you so much for all of your recommendations. I find myself looking forward to hearing a new episode all week! I’ve always wanted to travel to Ireland, but haven’t been able to make it there yet. I was wondering if you could recommend for me a book that will teach me some of the regional history of Ireland, bonus for a multigenerational family saga where someone emigrates to America. Some books I’ve loved with a similar feel to what I’m looking for are: The Rebels of Ireland by Edward Rutherford, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Mexico or Texas by James Michener and Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. I enjoy fantasy, police procedurals, steampunk, YA, cozy mysteries and historical fiction, but I’ll read anything you recommend! Extra bonus points for a great audiobook option. Thanks so much! -Jennie 2. Hi guys! Thanks so much for this podcast, I love it! So, I’ve only just recently started reading and watching horror. When I was a kid I was frightened very easily and stayed away from horror entirely, and up until this year I was under the impression I was still easily spooked. Turns out not so much! I have watched so much horror that other people have assured me is the scariest thing they’ve ever seen and I’m just like… uh??? No??? What’s scary??? I watched and read Haunting of Hill House recently and loved both but didn’t so much as feel vaguely unsettled when reading/watching it even in the dead of night. Same goes for It and the other Stephen King books I’ve read, the Quiet Place, and bunch of other horror movies. I really like Pan’s Labyrinth and all of Del Toro’s films (though again, wasn’t scared), as well as It, and The Haunting of Hill House. I just haven’t been scared. Do you guys know of any books that will just scare the living hell out of me? I’m really only interested in horror books with some sort of supernatural element by the way, I don’t have much interest in horror rooted in reality. Also, please don’t recommend Bird Box. I haven’t seen or read it, but to be perfectly honest the premise just does not interest me in the slightest. -Katharine 3. Hello Ladies! I find myself really wanting to read some sort of romance, but just can’t find the right thing. I really loved Heartless by Marissa Meyer and Simon Versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. I enjoyed Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. And I tried When Dimple met Rishi by Sandhya Menon, Upside of Unrequited, and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, which were okay. I also read The Selection which I did not like. I’ve read several mediocre adult romances (mostly stuff that I got for free, which may be where I’ve gone wrong) and do have Ramona Blue, Song of Achilles, Kiss Quotient, and The Wedding Date on my list (taken from previous recommendations here and on other Book Riot podcasts). I seem to do best when I stick with YA, but would definitely be open things more in the adult realm. Audiobook is a plus. No sexual violence please, I’m okay with passing mention, but nothing explicit on the page. Thank you! Love the show! -April 4. Hi ladies! I’ve recently started to dabble in some dark thriller reading, the book that set me on this path was Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. I loved the darkness of the kidnapping and the imprisonment, and the things she forced upon her prisoner (no judgement guys!) and the twists and innerworkings of the antagonist. Also enjoyed The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine, where the bad guy got what she wanted and ultimately deserved all at the same time. I think I’m leaning more towards the bad guy winning. After years of reading fluffy, happy romances I’m really enjoying delving into this dark side of books. Not too much into the mystery/detective work aspect but more into reading something that is just so unthinkable and messed up and leaving me shocked due to the unspeakable acts these characters do. I’ve tried the Death of Mrs. Westaway and while it had some aspects I liked, it missed the mark for me. Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall was an interesting read but kind of fell flat, would’ve liked a bit more action. Also liked The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham. I have the Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena & The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks on my to-read list. Thanks! -Andrea 5. I just finished The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles after having it on my tbr for a long while (from get booked maybe?) and loved it. I think I have also realized a favorite relationship trope and would love some other romance recommendations that feature: a straight laced, discreet, or serious character who “gets in over their head” with a livelier partner who distracts them from work, compels them to be honest, and/or otherwise coaxes them into opening up or stretching boundaries. (In this book the partner is quite assertive in doing this – A-OK, A+ – but a flirt might do this more subtly as well.) I’ll certainly be looking into this author further and other examples include Bound with Honor by Megan Mulry. The Ruin of a Rake by Cat Sebastien is also on my radar. I like historical settings obviously, but contemporary might be interesting for a change too. (Don’t know yet if they qualify but The Hating Game and Fight or Flight are also on my radar.) LGBT or straight is fine but I would prefer a light tone and no trigger warnings. Thank you! -Jessica 6. Hi! I’m looking for some funny, witty, dry humor and sarcastic audio books. I have read Heartburn, a gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue, and where’d you go Bernadette. Each of these had me laughing out loud as I walked through the grocery store. I love fiction and would like to stay with that. The more back list the better. I borrow my audio books from the library. Newer books either aren’t available or have a long wait list. I dropped my goodreads list but I’m terrible at tracking with that. I track with your journal but I threw a few of some of my recent books on there. Thanks so much!! -Jessica 7. Dark. Creepy. Surreal, but written in plain, clear prose. I love a Southern Gothic. I loved Night Film, Murakami’s After Dark. Also loved The Woman in the Window and all of Gillian Flynn. I don’t mind a dark tale, but prefer to avoid graphic depictions of violence toward women/children/animals. -Gina BOOKS Milkman by Anna Burns Brooklyn by Colm Toibin The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson The Twisted Ones by T. When we think about why we want to lose weight, we have to ask ourselves a few questions. The first is why are we overweight? This is actually a question that very few of us have really answered for ourselves. Most of us put it out of our mind, try to wear the clothes that hide the extra weight, and chalk it up to an excuse such as menopause or getting older.  But if we want to get to goal weight, we really need to answer the question, with an accurate answer, of why we are overweight. The only reason that any of us are overweight is that we eat more food than our body needs.  We can say we have a slow metabolism, or it’s menopause, or our hormones but it’s because we eat more than our body needs. So then the question becomes, “why” do we do that.  We have to dig deeper. In fact, I recommend you ask yourself why about “7 times” to get to the real answer.  I’ll give you my answers 1. Why am I overweight -> Because I eat too much. 2. Why do I eat too much? -> Because I go out to eat a lot. 3. Why does going out to eat a lot lead to eating too much?  -> I avoid making sensible choices when I am out.  4. Why do I avoid making sensible choices when eating out? -> I don’t want to deprive myself. 5. Why don’t you want to deprive yourself-> I feel deprived in other areas of my life and get my pleasure from this. (or why would I feel deprived?-> Am I always supposed to eat all the things when eating out?) 6. Why do I feel deprived in other areas of my life?-> I don’t make an effort to reward myself. How do I deprive myself? 7. How can you reward yourself so that I no longer feel deprived ->  What actions steps can I take to reward myself? ACTION STEPs: Look in local art center brochure for an art class that would be enjoyable. Aim for 1 hour of downtime per day doing fun, non-eating work related activities.  Unfortunately, one of the major reasons many of us overeat, which really has nothing to do with us, is our environment.  Food companies make money when we buy their product and many have become like cigarette companies used to be, strategically planning to make their \ products as irresistible and addictive as possible to get us to buy their product, with little concern for our health.  We have processed foods all around us, and marketed to us, and these have caused obesity rates and chronic disease to skyrocket.  It’s actually the blight of our modern age, and will cripple and bankrupt us if we are not careful. It may be too late to avoid those outcomes in terms of public health in fact. But that’s a discussion for another time. What I wanted to talk about in this video was everything that is INTERNAL to us.  Here’s how the usual path of weight loss goes: 1. We find a new plan or approach, for example BestShape50. 2. We are all excited and start losing weight. 3. Then a couple of different things will happen. a. Because we are not eating as much, we start feeling emotions that we don’t typically feel because we have been stuffing them down with food. OR b. Our life will throw a random problem at us that we will use as an excuse to go off track OR c. We do everything we should and our body adapts to weight loss, we stall and we tell ourselves nothing works. Instead of making a few additional tweaks,  we go back to our old eating patterns and put back on any weight we lost.  Weight loss is really tricky!! No? What we need to focus on with BestShape50 or any lifelong weight loss plan is to make our life so enjoyable and fulfilling that we do not need to use food (or anything else to escape it).   First we must allow rather than resist our negative feelings without eating off plan. We can’t expect to be happy and joyous all the time. In fact, about 50% of the time we can expect positive emotions, and the other 50% will be negative. So, that’s step 1, allowing, feeling and living with our emotions as they occur without overeating or going off plan.  The second thing that is “internal”, although it doesn’t seem like it, is that life throws “problems” at us. Some of these problems are of our own making and some are not. Whether we caused our problems or not, we need to not be victims. Something may or may not be our fault, but everything in our life is our responsibility of how we look at it and what we choose to make it mean.  Join the next BestShape50 FREE 7-Day Challenge! BestShape50.com/challenge The next challenge is starting soon. When you think about personal injury lawyers, is the first thing that comes to mind “what great advertising they have”? No? What about “the guys that work with these people must have an amazing company culture”? Also no? Well, today’s guest on the Innovation in Compliance Podcast has some insights that might just change your mind about that. Arnie Malham is a serial entrepreneur with a knack for solving problems - he and Tom discuss what mindset has to do with company culture, and what any of that has to do with personal injury lawyers. A Happy FiringWhen Arnie was the new guy working at an advertising agency, he kept getting all of the legal accounts dumped on his desk - no one else wanted them! He talks about how his interest in working with these kinds of professionals ended up getting him fired from the agency. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise because he formed his own advertising agency, focusing solely on working with personal injury lawyers. Working closely with these individuals gave him insight into the specific needs and expectations they have for their support vendors, and when Arnie saw a gap in the market, he decided to fill it and formed an entirely new company to provide after-business-hours intake support for personal injury law firms. Personal Injury Lawyers, Really?Tom and Arnie discuss the less-than-sterling reputation that personal injury lawyers have both in and outside of the legal world, and how that impacted Arnie’s ability to find and recruit talent to his firm. He needed to create a company culture so strong, so clear and so supportive, that it would overcome the negative perception most people had about the clients. He talks about some of the surprising and interesting ways he was able to do that. Sometimes, people DO cheer for the lawyers - and that’s what he wanted his team to be able to do. Mindset and Company CultureTom mentions how difficult many new entrepreneurs find it to scale up their organizations - as teams and organizations grow, culture can be watered down. Arnie talks about how over many years of growing his business, making plenty of mistakes along the way, he learned what was required to create strong company cultures not just in his own organization, but for other companies as well. “You can smell culture when you walk in the door” is the foundation of this strategy. Culture permeates a company, and it stems from the leadership of that company. If a leader delegates or abdicates culture, Arnie believes there won’t be one. Leaders must adopt the mindset of the culture they want, model it, and integrate it with the values of the company. He explains how this works, and shares an example of how he was able to keep his own company’s culture strong over several years, and a great deal of leadership turnover. You send out a proposal. Then after five minutes, you begin to wonder why you haven’t received a response from the prospect. And then the obsessive thoughts start to kick in.   “Has the prospect received the proposal or did it get lost in cyberspace?” You then continuously hit refresh on your email inbox. And, you’ve even begun to draft a follow up email. Next comes, “Was my quote too high?” You begin to beat yourself up and start planning how to broach the subject of discounting your fees if you do get pushback on your original proposal quote. Finally, you get to the part where you throw up your hands in exasperation and decide, “That’s it. It feels like a mask. It feels like a white lie, at best. And if you’re supposed to be shining your light, then putting a mask over that dims it. It’s a shade. Impostor syndrome — who the F do you think you are, acting like you’re some kind of star. Nobody’s buying it. Look at so and so over there, look at HER instagram. She knows how to do it. She’s barely even trying. And now we’re into Comparisonitis. See, this malaise is actually sort of a cluster of mind virus cancer cells — it's comparisonitis and impostor syndrome (referred to in pharmaceutical commercials as IS) — and shoulding all over yourself. That's the big symptom. The past month or so, in my world, was difficult. In addition to all the typical holiday stuff and just having all your routines interrupted, my dad was also in the hospital. And although I should have had a lot of excuses and reasons to cut myself some slack, instead I just kept thinking of all the things that a "Real FB group host" would post. I kept being presented with the idea of things I was “supposed” to do or things I “ought” to do. It actually became a little ridiculous. Because I was aware of it, as a voice, as a program, playing in the background. Like a tv left on across the room. Somebody turn that shit OFF already! I thought I ought to be posting Solstice message, because I would prefer to acknowledge THAT among all the holidays that we're acknowledging during the holidays and I felt like I needed to let everyone know I'm down with solstice. And then of course, do I do a Christmas message? That's always kid of awkward for a non-Christian because we celebrate quasi-pagan American Christmas. I don't know. That's a conflict in and of itself. And then a New Years message. That's a huge one for personal development bloggers and self-help people like me. I saw all these happy new year messages in the Facebook community and I felt like as the administrator, the originator of our group, I “should” somehow beam in. I "should" somehow appear in a FB live video or something. I’m going to have to come back and do another post addressing goal setting and milestones and intentions and all that stuff, because it’s a topic unto itself, and it's a little bit too much of a tangent at this moment. These were the kinds of things that were crossing my mind when I say I was "shoulding" all over myself. Those were the detailed examples in the moment of how that was all manifesting. But the reality is, what I wanted to do during the Holidays, once the actual holidays hit and everyone was off doing all their stuff, I just wanted to RETREAT. Self care was definitely what was called for and I don't think anyone who looked in and took a peek at what was going on in my world and the lives of those close to me and my family and all that, I don't think anyone would have argued with me that, you know, you need to just be focused on some self care. But I felt like, in order to claim that, I had to REBEL. I sure as shit couldn't "phone it in" or go through the motions (because that’s IS for sure. Impostor syndrome. We're calling it IS now). By rebel I mean not “call in sick”, not apologize. I didn’t want to have to explain it or announce it or do a Facebook post about how I'm not going to be on Facebook. That annoys me. I just wanted to ghost. Aka the Irish goodbye, the French exit, and any number of other ethnophobic terms—which means leaving a social gathering without saying goodbye. One minute you’re there at the bar, the party ... And then the next minute you’re just gone. Where did he go? I’ve been practicing that for as long as I can remember. I know since childhood I can remember at least an elementary school age Halloween costume party of some type at some time when I ghosted. It required my mother's assistance because of course she was driving. But somehow I pulled off a ghosting. Leaving without anyone noticing is one of the components of invisibility magic, which is something that I can say that I'm good at, or that I enjoy practicing. I don't know that I ENJOY it. I think I had to learn how to do it for any number of reasons. I enjoy the fact that I'm good at it and it's kind of fun to watch the effects of good invisibility magic. I think, wow, it's cool that I can do that. I’ll talk about that another time too. But this idea of ghosting, the Irish goodbye, the French exit, my friends in college kind of probably hated that about me. I was known to do it. I let it be a THING I was known for, because then it was just a blank cheque. I could do it all the time. After college, friends always wanted to ride with me when we went out because I didn’t drink. I did designated driver on New Years Eve for, I can't even remember how many years. But I always used to say, “Alright. You can ride with me to the club, but I WILL disappear on you, so just be prepared… I'll get you there but you gotta figure out how you're getting home. Because I will disappear." Interestingly, when I think back to that, I realize what I REALLY wanted to be doing when I wanted to disappear from the club was the same thing that I wanted to be doing now when I disappeared from everything. I just wanted to be home, reading a book. And that's exactly what I did for New Years. Not New Years Eve. New Years Day. I actually prefer New Years Day so much that I just go to bed in preparation on New Years Eve of having a luscious New Years Day. My New Years Day's intentions were to really truly just take the day off, do nothing, but drink caffeine, coffee, tea, watch Netflix and read. And stay in my pajamas all day. It's HARD for me not to work at least a little bit every day. And I did end up working for about 10 minutes. Because it was a Tuesday, and I forgot to schedule everything, so I had to jump on Facebook and share a few links to my latest podcast episode — for the sake of my guest, really, more than for me. If it had been one of these solo episodes, I would've just been like, eh, I'll do it tomorrow. But I didn't want her to not get the full, you know, backing and sharing and promotion that her show deserves. By the way, just for the record, lying all around day in pajamas not doing anything … was depressing. It was physically depressing. It programmed my body in a way that was really uncomfortable to me and I don’t think that I'm ever going to even try that again. It honestly felt like being sick, but I wasn’t. And it kind of made me almost have symptoms of being tired, like feeling fatigue. And who wants that? Through all this, on New Years Day even, when I was really just intentionally ghosting everything. I kept thinking: Are the people in the SYS community wondering where I am? Do they realize I’m missing? Are they disappointed that I’m not putting some helpful something on their feed today? And I don't mean are they wondering where I am, do they miss me... like I wanted to be missed. It was more like, "Oh crap, I hope I can get away with this and that they really don't care." Because I really need this. And I feel like if I could've asked you all to vote, you probably would've said it's okay. And there were so many wonderful Happy New Year messages on there anyway. I would kind of look at them and scan once in awhile, oh those are nice! You know, whoever's in there looking for that is getting a lot of it. They don't need mine. It's just a drop in the bucket at this point. To tell you honestly, it sometimes feels like I’ve thrown a party on social media and then chosen to stay upstairs. Like I'm having a party in my house but I'm just hanging out in my bedroom with my cats because social media for me has always been a necessity of my business more than a real kind of personal impulse. My personal impulse is always to ghost. I don't know. Did you guys criticize my absence? Did you think, “Wow. What a lousy leader he is…” Or did you even notice? Or did you think maybe I was recovering from a stressful holiday period with a parent in the hospital, because you saw me post about that. So you kind of knew, maybe, what was going on for me. You know what? Who cares what you think about me? WHO CARES WHAT ANYONE THINKS? About you. Or me. Or anyone. That’s kind of the point of all those thoughts — all the Shoulding all over yourself. What do you really want to do? What do you need? Why isn’t that acceptable? Why isn't that enough? How are you shoulding all over yourself? What areas of your life? What’s it about? It’s gotta be about something to do with the public. With other people. With those around you outside your own head. With some perceived external judgment from the world. But is that even real? Or are you projecting it? And what happens if you just don’t? If you’re honest with your true inclinations and desires and needs and you just say: I’m not going. I’m not showing up. I’m not calling. I’m not explaining. I’m not apologizing. Even as I say that, I’m thinking “Isn’t that a little rude though? You gotta make some excuses and apologies just to keep from hurting other people’s feelings…” One of my favorite memes is a picture of a T-shirt that I really need to track down and order: It's just a black t-shirt and it has big white block letters on it and it says “SORRY I’M LATE. I DIDN’T WANT TO COME.” That kinda sums up my social life. I'm one of those people that gets excited if you cancel plans with me. I go, "Oh yes!" I feel a sense of relief. It still assumes an apology. "Sorry I'm late. I didn't want to come." It draws sarcastic attention to the issue and makes you more of an asshole. But one of my favorite Oprah quotes, or Oprah-isms is “NO" IS A COMPLETE ANSWER. It’s okay to say No. Without an excuse or an explanation or a white lie or a justification What if you just say No? What can you really get away with just saying No to? If you’re a spiritual person and you're trying to better yourself and be best, you probably want to come from a place of Yes. So, that’s sticky, right? I want to come from a place of Yes but I need to say no and not apologize for it when I need to. It sounds good, but that's all kind of hard to follow through on, I think. So maybe do this. Maybe get clear about what are you saying Yes to for the right or wrong reasons. What are you saying No to for the right or wrong reasons? Just get clear about that. Do you say No because of a fear of success? Then you should probably come from a place of Yes then right? It’s so easy to convince ourselves that every invitation is an opportunity. Have you ever thought something like, "Yeah, but what if I don't go to the Christmas party and my soul mate was there and we didn't meet." Some bad romantic comedy situation. But let’s be honest—you know there are some things you just want to say No to. Obligations. What happens if you say No? Really, what happens? What about instead of explaining or apologizing, you just don’t say the word 'sorry' anymore. There was a meme going around last year that I loved so much. And it was about replacing Sorry with Thank you. Instead of “Sorry I’m late” you say “Thank you for waiting on me.” Instead of “Sorry I’m talking your ear off” you say “Thank you for taking the time to listen." I know Oprah said No is a complete answer, but I think we can still make it pretty. You could say: “Thank you for the invitation. I’m really grateful you included me. I won’t be able to attend. Have a fantastic time! Let’s catch up soon and you can tell me all about it.” They're excited. They're don't want to hear about the drama going on in your world that you're using as an excuse not to come. So just wish them well. Wish them happiness and say, "Have a great time. Tell me about it later." Are you mad at me, for choosing to be alone in my tower over the holidays? And just ignore all that Solstice, Christmas, New Year stuff and just not be there for it. Are you disappointed? Do you resent me? You’re not. You don't. I’ve talked to some of you about this and I know what your response is... And, you know, your friends and family and clients, they're probably okay with your choices too. Whatever it is you’re trying to be: perfect parent perfect professional perfect creative perfect partner perfect spouse perfect planner You notice the theme there… Shoulding all over yourself is about perfectionism. You’re not going to be perfect. It’s not going to be perfect. Maybe as we remove the words sorry and should from our vocabulary, and we can also remove the word perfect. My friend Seth has a mantra for this: “It always turns out wonderful anyway."

The Art Of A Thousand No's

Inside Influence

Greetings everyone, my name is Julie Masters and welcome to another episode of Inside Influence. In which I delve into the minds of some of the world’s most fascinating influencers – or experts in influence - to get to the bottom of what it really takes to own your voice - and then amplify it to drive an industry, a conversation, a movement or a nation. In this episode, we dive into the nuts and bolts of one simple word…. NO. As its definition NO is described as just ’a negative answer or decision’. However in reality - for many of us - summoning the courage to say No often feels impossible. With that in mind, what if there were more ways to say No? What if there were a thousand ways? Today we dive into what it is to say no with clarity and conviction – and even look deeply at the question of whether it’s possible to say a fiercely powerful ‘no’ - with kindness. Today’s conversation is with the incredible artist and Art Historian Bahia Shehab. In Arabic the literal translation for the word ‘No’ is ‘No and A Thousand Times No’. It’s this concept – a thousand times no - that started as an artwork, became a book, reformed into a protest, and went on to be heard as one voice of a revolution. It was during the Egyptian revolution in 2011 – the first day of which (25th of January) is literally referred to now as The Day Of Anger - Bahia was overcome with rage against the dictators, the violence – and what became military rule. Like many of the people I meet and the people I know - she describes herself as ‘a quiet person’. Shouting and screaming on the streets wasn’t something that came naturally to her.So instead of screaming – after witnessing the endless stories and images of atrocities – flooding both her City and the internet – she realized she could no longer choose to stay at home safely with her children. She had to find some way to contribute her voice. So she chose a way of communicating that she did know – a way that drew on her talents as an artist.Having been invited in 2010 to participate in an exhibition to commemorate 100 years of Islamic art in Europe. She had researched and collated over 1000 symbols for the word ‘no’ in Arabic script - producing both an artwork and a book documenting their history. So she went back to these symbols - and began spraying them on the streets, in public squares. Channeling these 1000 ‘no’s’ (in her own words ‘just like ammunition’). No to military rule. No to violence. No to dictatorship. No to beating women. The impact of her work – and the work of the many, many Egyptian artists on the streets at that time – started conversations, provoked debate and above all – at a time when a regime could literally turn off all the phones in a country – allowed the voiceless to be heard.Bahia has since been selected as one of BBC’s 100 Women for two consecutive years. Been invited as a TED Global Fellow – and became the first woman from the Arab region to receive the UNESCO Shar-jah Prize for Arab Culture. In this conversation we cover:● The challenges of saying a fierce No – when being loud doesn’t come naturally● Why actions (and art) can often be louder than words● Exactly why a small word can be so powerful – both to hear and to say – that it’s able to both start and stop a revolution● Why street art can be pivotal in starting and monitoring progressive conversations● The innate power of storytelling - as a tool to remember the past, shape the future and avoid making the same mistakes. ● Finally the role of empathy when setting boundaries, and why a kind ‘No’ can be one of the most powerful acts of love – and sometimes – alter history itself One quote that has stayed with me from this conversation is this… “You can crush the flowers, but you can’t delay spring."This episode is for anyone that’s felt – or currently feels – crushed by the word ‘no’. By the strength it takes to express it – and to hear it – and then to deal with the consequences that inevitably follow. In particular it dives into the story of one woman (who also represents the many others both in Egypt and globally) who are brave enough to show up and - not only say it - but say it without resorting to violence. Anyway – enough of me. You may notice the internet drop in and out a few times with this one – unfortunately the connection wasn’t fantastic in Cairo on this day – but sometimes you just have to work with what you have. Please enjoy my conversation with Bahia Shehab. To view Bahia’s Ted Talk Click Here: https://www.ted.com/talks/bahia_shehab_a_thousand_times_no?language=en See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
