Kathleen Kinmont is famously known for the horror films Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Bride of Re-Animator as well as her character Cheyenne Phillips on the popular 90's television show, Renegade. She's also appeared in a lot of fun, obscure action flicks in the earlier portion of her career and has gone on to wear many hats in the entertainment industry from being a producer, writer and a director.   Kathleen has a brand-new book out called “I Should've Been Nicer to Quentin Tarantino” available now on Amazon, Kindle and Audible if you prefer the audio version. The book is fantastic and touches on so many different themes and experiences throughout her life and it truly can not be missed. She discusses her anti-bullying efforts, running into Johnny Depp at a bar, turning down Quentin Tarantino in her acting class at age 16 when he wanted to do a kissing scene with her and so many more snippets of greatness, your head will explode.   If you're an LA native or would like to make a fun little road trip to meet Kathleen, she'll be doing a signing at the Illiad book store in North Hollywood on July 22nd from 4-6pm to discuss the book and host a signing, so come on out! She might even have some exciting Halloween 4 memorabilia for sale and I believe you'll be able to bring your own items to get signed as well! Thanks so much again to Kathleen for doing the episode. She is such a rockstar and one of the nicest people I've ever encountered in this industry. A tour de force on screen and an absolute sweetheart off the set.   I really hope you all enjoy the episode. A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life. — CHRISTOPHER K. GERMERI recently did a survey to find out where women needed the most support in terms of emotional self care and one response came up again and again- feeling demotivated. There can be many different reasons why we feel demotivated in terms of emotional, spiritual, or physical origins. But before I go any further I want to dispel one myth that many of us have about motivating ourselves - that by criticizing ourselves and pushing harder we can motivate ourselves when we feel like giving up or when we are lagging behind.Self criticism is not an effective motivator, self compassion is! Our self criticism tends to make us less confident and become afraid of failure. On the other hand, if we are compassionate towards ourselves, we are able to keep moving forward even when we stumble, not because we are any less capable but because we care about ourselves and give ourselves grace.1:08 Why self criticism as a motivation tool is a myth3:16 Your inner critic is not your friend!4:13 I SHOULD....how often do you "should" yourself?6:34 Why we need to redefine "perfection"!8:11 We are beautiful, flawed and "whole" all at the same time9:51 How embracing our imperfect ourselves helps motivate usAccepting imperfection and practicing self compassionOnce you start accepting your “imperfect” self, you are more likely to see yourself as a “whole” human being rather than a sum of all the discrete parts. Mistakes and failures, challenges are an inevitable part of our lives and once we are able to accept this as a fact, we are motivated to take charge of our lives. We are then able to assess what went wrong, focus on a solution and get on with our lives. In other words, we are free to operate from a place of “We are all trying to do the best that we can” and are able to appreciate and celebrate every tiny bit of progress that we make. Also, by learning how to be kind to ourselves we are able to stop criticizing ourselves for our flaws and mistakes and become comfortable with being “good enough”. This is an area that we will be exploring in detail so that you can feel more motivated, empowered, and calm in my upcoming course “Boost your emotions health: Build your radical self care practice”.The VIP waitlist is now open! How do I know when it’s truly not the right time to move forward on a project in my business? How do I know when it’s “out of alignment” or simply just fear? Today, on Episode 142 on the Podcast we are talking about the difference! Recently, I received a clear series of what I like to call “red lights from the Universe” inviting me to pause a project I was rolling out in my business. The only thing was - I really didn’t want to pause, I was SO excited and inspired to move ahead! I was so busy collecting evidence on why I SHOULD go ahead - that it took me quite a while to acknowledge the signs. THIS situation taught me a really beautiful lesson, that has highlighted how to tell when something is truly “not flowing”. And with the benefit of hindsight - I can say that although at the time it felt like a HUGE thing to call the project off - now it really feels like nothing!! Join me as we talk: * How to tell the difference between something being truly not aligned vs fear * Examples of how red lights form the Universe feel, and what they mean * A recent example from my business of a red light from the Universe - and how it felt to follow the signs * An update on my life + next travel adventures!! This episode is perfect for you if you’ve ever wondered - is this really out of alignment or is this just my own fear of expanding? Start listening now! Val returns this week to help us answer trivia questions in this weeks episode. We had a lot of fun seeing how much we do not remember or know at all. We also had an "appearance" from Stone Cold Steve Austin! How We Played: We played individually so we could really bring out how dumb we are at simple questions. Each trivia card has four questions so we made each question answered correctly a point. Going around the group we each read the four questions and answered to the best of our ability. Then the answers on the back were revealed and points counted!I Should've Known That... is for ages 14+, and it really showed all the crap you learn in school doesn't matter as an adult unless you play trivia. Even though we are not smarter than a 4th grader, we still enjoyed the competition. We had a lot fun laughing at our completely wrong answers. Gotta laugh so you don't cry. Game play can last a long as long as you need. Since there are four questions per card, and we never stay on topic, our game lasted a little longer than 45 mins. Get Connected:Instagram www.instagram.com/cardswitheandrYouTube @ CardswithE&RTwitter www.twitter.com/CardswithEandREmail us @ CardswithEandR@gmail.com

Back in the day, my entire life revolved around FOOD and my BODY. In reality I just wanted to feel beautiful, feel proud of my life and my accomplishments, and simply be HAPPY! And I THOUGHT that losing weight would just magically heal all of my internal struggles and ‘make me’ happy.  So I went and did what any woman would do with (a lot) of weight to lose would do: ★ I went on every diet, plan, and program I could imagine. ★ I hired coaches, trainers, joined masterminds and coaching programs, and attended retreats and events and camps. ★ I even went back to therapy! And it worked…to an extent. But fast forward to the part where I ‘had it all’ – to the part in the story where I SHOULD have been happy and content. That’s not how the story went down AT ALL. In reality, even AFTER I lost one-third of my body weight, built a successful business, and checked off all those proverbial ‘tick-boxes’ I thought I needed to be happy… I was NOT happy. And that’s because while I was so busy and intentional about ‘fixing’ everything OUTSIDE of me. I never went and changed what was going on INSIDE. I never went and transformed my Self-Image. And in this episode of the podcast, we are going to talk about why you can’t out-diet, out-smart, or out-strategize your brain and your Self-Image AND what to do instead.  ★ Watch The Stressless Eating Webinar:  https://www.StresslessEating.com

We've All Pushed Through Awkward Moments of Being Vulnerable Do you remember your first real kiss? I was with my first girlfriend. I was probably 14? I was scared to death. There was no internet, and for me, nobody to ask? So I went in for the kiss and kissed her in a very TV-friendly way. I stopped and said, "Let's try that again" and I figured out what to do. I tried everything I could to avoid falling in love with my first wife. I had told her over and over that I didn't want anything serious, but here we were a year later and a year later I was in love with her. Sitting in front of her house I said, "I need to tell you something," and then proceeded to tell her I liked her a lot. I backed it up, and then said, "I love you." These are scary things to do. You put yourself out there, and if you do it wrong you get some feedback, and you tweak yourself.  Over the past two weeks, I've had meeting after meeting with members of my audience (one at a time). Some of them were current or past members of the School of Podcasting, and others I had never met (but they were listeners to my show). Today I talked about what I learned and why you should seriously consider it. If the Words "Focus Group" Makes You Uncomfortable, then Think of It as Coaching So many people who are experts in their field still used coaches. Hank Haney served as Tiger Woods' coach from 2004-2010. During that span, Woods won six of his 15 career major championships. The two were very close while they worked together, and Woods credits a ton of his success to Haney's teachings. Here are some more people who even after their enormous success still have coaches: Richard Branson  Oprah Winfrey Tony Robbins Leonardo DiCaprio Serena Williams Metallica We all need people who give us feedback. That is how we improve. - Bill Gates Is This Just a Plug To Get Me To Hire You As A Coach? While I have the Podcast Rodeo Show which looks at your first impression and the Podcast Review Show that looks at your whole episode, website, and we have you fill out a form to discuss the goals of the show, if you want to know what content your audience wants and needs, the best place to go is your audience.  I'm Still A Shy Guy at Heart People don't believe it, but underneath it all I'm fairly shy. So the thought of reaching out to my email list and asking them for their input made me a little nervous. This was especially true if someone was a current or previous member of the School of Podcasting. This is where you have to change your attitude.  When I went to college for my first degree, I was a waiter. To be a good waiter, you listen to your customer and give them exactly what they ordered. As I got on zoom, I just said to myself it's like being a waiter again.  I Should've Done This Years Ago I sent out an email with the subject line of, "I need your help...." and explained that I was going to rebuild the School of Podcasting from the ground up and I wanted to talk to them. Here are some of the things that I gained from doing this exercise: I have a visual of what my audience looks like.  I got two people who will be future guests I got to see what was working in my show In regards to the School of Podcasting, I'm glad to say that the things people want, are often already being delivered. I learned that I might want to reorganize some of the content in the School of Podcasting. I heard some answer repeated. This is proof of concept that the tutorials I have are the right tutorials. I got a couple of great questions that I will be using for the "Question of the Month" in the future. There is nothing to be afraid of as these people are your listeners. If anything they might "fanboy" out a bit which is flattering.  When You're Too Close to the Subject There was one comment that came up twice that in one way surprised me, and yet upon thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. When I asked if there were any lessons in the School of Podcasting that they found confusing. Most people were so much confused, but wanted me to go deeper into subjects, The lesson? My lesson on Libsyn.com. What is this surprising? Because I've worked there for over five years. Why does this make sense? The curse of knowledge. I went too fast.  This was exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.  Don't Do This on a Group Call While I could've held this as a "Town Hall" type of meeting, I enjoyed connecting one on one and giving my listener my undivided attention. I know for many of us who are introverts, podcasting is a great way to reach many people without meeting many people, but I'm here to tell you that time is too important to waste. If you were headed in the wrong direction wouldn't you want your GPS to alert you? Well, your audience is your GPS on the road to delivering value.  Start Your Podcast Today If you want to learn how to connect with your audience by creating great content that inspires them to tell a friend, JOIN the School of Podcasting.  Because Of My Podcast: I'm an Advisor in Hollywood Jerry Williams is the producer and host of the FBI retired case file review podcast. She's on a mission to show you who the FBI is and what the FBI does through her interviews with retired agents about some of the FBI biggest cases, and some investigations you've never heard about.  She said, "A couple of years ago, I wrote a book called FBI myths and misconceptions, a manual for armchair detectives, which uses quotes and snippets, from my podcast interviews to debunk cliches about the FBI, and books, TV and movies. Because of that book and because of my podcast, last summer I was contacted by two different Hollywood Studios. Now I am under contract with FX network, which is owned by Disney, and Warner Brothers and Bad Robot as a technical consultant on two TV shows that are going to be released later this fall. Now, I'm not going to name-drop, but if you look up Bad Robot, you'll get to see who I get to hang out with talking to the writers on zoom or the phone a few hours a week as a lot of fun and good pay. Now, I think this is pretty cool because of my podcast story. When I started FBI retired case file review five years ago, the purpose of the podcast was to help me sell more books. I am an author, getting ready to publish my fifth book, crime fiction and nonfiction about the FBI. However, based on my own experiences as an FBI agent, and because I've now interviewed more than 222 former colleagues, I'm pretty knowledgeable about most of the FBI violations. But I never thought of myself as a technical consultant. But now I am. Thanks, Dave for letting me share my because of my podcast story, love your show." Welcome to episode 303… and specifically… part two in our brand new series called “The gift of being fully present.” This series is specifically designed to help you to live more fully in the PRESENT.  Because if we can fully live in the moment more often… THEN… we can soak up more of the good stuff.  AND bring more of the good stuff into the world too.  That means loving well... bringing excellence... and having more fun... even in 2020!  It means taking action when and where we need to AND it also means resting… actually resting... and finding a sense of peace... once in a while too!  I know… I know… it's a big task… especially with the goal of keeping these episodes to under 15 minutes… but I think we're up for the task.  So… let's get to this!   RESOURCES: PART 1 of the Give the Gift of Being Fully Present: www.mitchmatthews.com/302 2 Minutes to Confidence. mitchmatthews.com/246 MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE: (The Transcript) Okay… so last week… in episode 302… we talked about WHY we want to live more in the present… more in the here and now. Plus… in that last episode… we talked about starting with a simple experiment. That was catching yourself sometimes and asking the question, What am I doing... right now? And then to take a deep breath as you do. It's a simple 2-step exercise… but I know it's been a bit of a game-changer for me.  How about you?  How did it go? Did you find yourself using the question to edge yourself back… ever so slightly... to the here and now?  I heard from some of you. In fact, long-time Canadian DREAM THINK DOer “Cathy B” let me know that when she was feeling on the verge of distraction and overwhelm… she used the exercise.  One specific example she offered was… when it helped her to feel grateful for an email she'd just received from her daughter.  It was a simple email… but it was about something Cathy‘s been dreaming about and working on for a while.  She said the exercise of just pausing… and taking a deep breath… and coming back the moment…   during such a simple thing as reading an email…   The question… and the deep breath… helped her to truly take in that moment and appreciate the email… and the effort that her daughter took to write it.  She said it really warmed her heart… and made that moment even more special.  She didn't miss it. How cool is that?  Let me know how it went for you!  I want to hear from you. Okay… well… with THIS episode, I also promised to do three things: Get you some brain science  Help you to beat the “distraction habit”  AND… give you a new question to experiment with  SOME BRAIN SCIENCE TO LIVE MORE IN THE PRESENT: Okay… so you guys know I'm fascinated with the brain.   I was a solid C+ science student in high school and college… but since then… I've just fallen in love with studying how our brain works… and how… if we understand those things… we can do things to dream bigger… think better and do more of what we were put on the planet to do. Well… the brain is wonderfully and beautifully made… and there are soooooo many aspects to it… that we could talk for YEARS on all the different facets and aspects that are happening in our math cans as we're working on living in the moment more…  BUT since we're keeping things short and I want to get right to something that's going to help you immediately… I want to really key in on TWO main areas of the brain. THE TWO PARTS WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT TODAY ARE:  The basal ganglia and the prefrontal cortex. Now… if you're a big fan of talking about the brain… give me a fist pump in the air and say… “I'm all in.” BUT if you're not… hang with me because we're going to explain things in a way where it will help you to be more present… AND you'll be able to impress your friends at your next Zoom dinner party! First… we'll talk about the basal ganglia.   It's what I call the brain's “Project Manager.” It's the part of our brain that is constantly looking for patterns… systems… subconscious checklists… and you guessed it… habits.   It's primary job is to try to figure out ways of doing things… so the brain doesn't have to work as much. Just like a good project manager, it loves to tell the rest of the brain, “Hey… relax… just do your thing.  I've got this!”   For example… the basal ganglia is the part of your brain that allows you to hop in your car and drive to the store… BUT when you pull into the store's parking lot… you catch yourself thinking, “Wow.  I remember leaving my driveway… but I couldn't tell you one other thing about that drive!” I bet you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about… but here's something you can do for fun… to really experience the full power of YOUR basal ganglia.   Here's an experiment.   If you want to mess with your basal ganglia… if you want to “prove” to yourself that it's there…  When you go to do your bedtime routine tonight…  brush your teeth with the opposite hand you normally use.   Seriously… your BG will try to wrestle you to the ground because it's saying, “BUT WAIT… THAT'S NOT HOW WE DO THINGS!!!” Or… as you drive to the store next time… take a street you NEVER take.   Yes… it might add a total of 2 minutes to the trip… but do it.  YOUR inner-project manager will revolt… BUT this kind of exercise is REALLY good for you so you can feel your Basal Ganglia in action. But this type of experiment is also really good because it REALLY helps to wake up the second part of the brain we're going to talk about next. And THAT is the PREFRONTAL CORTEX.   The Brain's PFC is the brain's BIG BOSS. It's designed to override a lot of the systems in the brain. BUT like a good boss… in order to work it's magic… it has to be engaged. The basal ganglia is constantly looking for ways to say to the boss, “Don't worry about a thing!  I've got a system for that.”   Or… “Work on other stuff, I've got a process for that.” Don't get me wrong… the basal ganglia doesn't have bad intentions.   It's just looking for systems to make life easier. HOWEVER… it's just NOT always a good judge over whether those systems work.   Enter the “distraction habit.” Think about it.   As you've probably seen in documentaries like “The Social Dilemma” or TED talks about how things like social media… or even… email can make our brains explode with dopamine and serotonin because of the sense of feedback… variety… and novelty.   Now, we're not going to get into whether all of that is inherently good or bad… in THIS episode… but when you think about the little bit that we've talked about already… you can imagine that if the basal ganglia has figured out that IF we start to feel anxious, overwhelmed and / or uncomfortable… which is kind of the 2020 trifecta… it makes sense that the basal ganglia would say, “Don't worry about it!  I've got something that will make things better.”   And then move you to a “distraction habit.” Because… it's learned… when we move into the “distraction habit” of grabbing your phone… your brain receives a burst of dopamine and serotonin.   And just like how you get lost in thought on your drive to the store… and you wind up driving into that parking lot thinking, “How the heck did I get HERE???”   The same thing can happen when we grab our phone or hop on our computer to just check social for a second…  Maybe you've had the same experience where you've just found your phone in your hand… and your thumb is scrolling… and you find yourself saying, “I don't even remember taking this thing out of my pocket.” Or… “How long have I been doing this?” I won't say who… but someone recently totally confessed that they thought they had a toilet ring permanently tattooed to their butt… because they'd gotten so caught up in social… while “taking a break,” they spent an hour in the bathroom… and could barely walk when they went to stand up.  I know… nasty.  LOL.  BUT maybe you can identify! So here's the thing.  The basal ganglia is neither good nor bad inherently… BUT it is a creature of habit.  Actually, it's a CREATOR of habit. So we need to be intentional about the habits we're walking out. The good news is that the prefrontal cortex can TOTALLY override the basal ganglia… and one of the best ways to do that is through a good question.  Because a question engages the Prefrontal Cortex… it brings it into the mix.  It steps in and says, “Wait… what are we doing?  And… just as importantly... WHY are we doing it? Makes sense… right?  And that's exactly why we experimented with our first question last week!  And why we're going to introduce a NEW question this week.   So… our question for this week is:  “What do I want to do right now... intentionally?” Oh… You can still take that deep breath after asking it… and that's good! But with this question… I want you to take an action that helps your body to get on board.  Move in some way. Snap your fingers. Clap your hands. Raise a fist pump in the air. Take some action… big or small. If you've ever heard Tony Robbins talk about this kind of movement… you could say that this kind of thing would allow to have a “STATE CHANGE.” By the way… if you want to learn more about this and the science behind how THIS type of thing works… check out episode 246 called “2 minutes to confidence.   mitchmatthews.com/246 It will make a difference. Okay… so let's recap.  So here's the specific experiment for this week. If you feel distracted or you want to feel more in the moment: Ask the question.   “What do I want to do right now... intentionally?” That's right.  Engage the prefrontal cortex.   Ask yourself what YOU ACTUALLY want to be doing. Last quick example:  I'll say I used this just this past weekend.   I had a lot of stuff I could be working on… and I was starting to go there as I was at the dinner table with my family.  I started to drift to all the stuff I COULD be doing or I SHOULD be doing… but I asked the question,  “What do I want to do right now... intentionally?” And it brought me back to an amazing conversation about how The Madolorian is one of the best… if not the best TV show of all time. Priceless.   Loved it. I didn't miss the moment… and I'm soooo grateful. And that's what I want for YOU too… THIS WEEK!!! It's like that awesome quote from Jim Elliot…  “Wherever you are, be ALL there.”  Try it out. And just see what it does for you. It may not be easy. Heck… your basal ganglia may resist it at first. BUT… as you do it… your basal ganglia will start to come around and start to set up NEW patterns and sequences. So being IN the moment… and being more present… becomes your NEW go-to habit too! Give it a try and let me know how it goes. EPISODE MINUTE BY MINUTE 0:02 Welcome to part two 2:45 Part one recap 5:38 How Brain Science affects you being present 7:07 Exercises for your basal ganglia 12:40 How movement actually helps you stay resent 14:48 Be all there I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Let me know how the experiments are going for YOU!  Leave a comment about something that's worked for you or let me know where and how you've experimented with the questions.  I can't wait to hear from YOU!!! Today's episode is all about how to FIND gratitude rather than FORCING it...especially when what you really feel is stressed. If you often hear yourself muttering, “I SHOULD be grateful...” then this episode will relieve that obligation for you. This topic came about because many people use the month of November to post “30 Days of Gratitude” on their social media. And typically soon after I begin to hear in conversations with my friends, “I know I should be grateful for…” or “Is there something wrong with me? Because I feel frustrated with my situation...not grateful.” We cannot force it. It’s very much like finding happiness; the more you try to force it the more frustrating and elusive it gets. The witching season is upon us once again. Past Halloweens we’ve covered a Medieval Serial Killer, Medieval Zombies and more. All the Halloween episodes are available on the Halloween Podcast page. This Halloween we are looking at haunted castles from the Middle Ages. Castles We’ll visit a handful of castles around England and one in Ireland. Most of the castles today are in Northern England and one isn’t a castle. We’ll start out at Whitby Abbey and make our way north to Alnwick Castle and the infamous Alnwick Vampire! The Alnwick Vampire spread death and pestilence wherever it roamed. It was even recorded by medieval chronicler William of Newburgh. Then we’ll look at a castle dubbed ‘The Most Haunted Castle” in England, Chillingham Castle. Filled with the ghosts of hundreds of Scottish prisoners, an evil torturer and an innocent boy caught in the middle of political betrayal. The last two stops on our trip are on the Emerald Isle at Malahide Castle talking about perhaps, the first evil clown and ending up in London at the massive Tower of London! The Tower of London is home to some of the most famous ghosts in England including the Princes in the Tower and Queen Anne Boleyn. The night before her execution, Queen Anne wrote her death poem, which you can read below. I found a beautiful rendition of the poem set to music in the episode. Queen Anne Boleyn Death Poem: Oh Death, rock me asleep, Bring me to quiet rest, Let pass my weary guiltless ghost Out of my careful breast. Toll on, thou passing bell; Ring out my doleful knell; Let thy sound my death tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. My pains who can express? Alas, they are so strong; My dolour will not suffer strength My life for to prolong. Toll on, thou passing bell; Ring out my doleful knell; Let thy sound my death tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. Alone in prison strong I wait my destiny. Woe worth this cruel hap that I Should taste this misery! Toll on, thou passing bell; Ring out my doleful knell; Let thy sound my death tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. Farewell, my pleasures past, Welcome, my present pain! I feel my torments so increase That life cannot remain. Cease now, thou passing bell; Rung is my doleful knell; For the sound my death doth tell. Death doth draw nigh; There is no remedy. The Tower of London also had one of the craziest executions recorded. A novice executioner missed his mark and chased an elder lady around hacking her to death. As comical as it sounds it as a gruesome death seen by over 150 witnesses. Grab some candy and get ready for a chilling tour of haunted castles! Stressless Eating

Back in the day, before I lost all that weight and made over my body….AND Long before I was doing what I do now, I was a high-achieving woman, highly-motivated, lady on a mission that just wanted to feel beautiful, feel proud of my life and my accomplishments, and simply be HAPPY! So I went and did what any woman would do with (a lot) of weight to lose, a hope, and a dream: ★ I went on every diet, plan, and program I could imagine. ★ I hired coaches, joined masterminds, and attended retreats and events. ★ I even went back to therapy! And it worked…to an extent. But fast forward to the part where I ‘had it all’ – to the part in the story where I SHOULD have been happy and content. As you’ve learned from me sharing bits and pieces of my journey, you know that that’s not how the story went down AT ALL. In reality, even AFTER I lost one-third of my body weight, built a successful business, and checked off all those proverbial ‘tick-boxes’ I thought I needed to be happy… I was NOT happy. Because Self-Love has a unique recipe. It has its own magical ingredients. I tried skipping steps! I tried cutting corners and fast-forwarding through the process. I tried leaving out ingredients. And I believe that when the recipe is crafted (and then followed),(which is exactly what I do with all of my Stressless Eating clients),  it hands-down-every-time brings YOU ( the ‘chef’ of this recipe I speak of) from feeling: Okay so let’s talk about the 5 Ingredients (Goggles) Of Your Self-Image: Ingredient #1: Self-Care:  And what i mean by that is Figuring out what it would take for you to care for yourself (as a verb and a noun) physically, mentally, socially/emotionally, spiritually, relationally….all of it? So...that being said….Do you truly feel like you know how to take CARE of yourself? I have found that most women don't. They might know how to 'get fit' or 'get healthy' for a little while, but after adversity strikes they go right back to their default. Or maybe you know how to take care of yourself PERSONALLY, but on the mental and emotional levels, you feel like you need some help? Ingredient #2: Self-Acceptance:  Figuring out what it would look like (and feel like) for you to fully accept yourself without exception. Figuring out how to accept WHO you are and WHERE you are (without all that shame, blame, guilt, comparison, and perfectionism). There’s actually  few  sides to this. The first side is one that isn't rocket science and it’s not THAT different than what a lot of the self love messages out there are sharing.  And that's….What it would feel like for you to fully accept yourself without exception? I mean FULLY accept yourself-- 'warts' and all. Not when you lose the weight or make more money. I mean...right now.  Ingredient #3: Self-Worth:  Understanding what you are ‘weighing’, what you are measuring, and the 'currency' that you are living your life (judging yourself) by. What are you 'weighing' and what are you measuring? Are you judging yourself 24 hours a day based on the size of your jeans, your career status, or the number of 'likes' you got on Facebook? Or are YOU defining and setting the 'currency' that you want to be measuring yourself by and working towards THAT? Ingredient #4 Self-Esteem:  Understanding the ‘know, like, and trust’ factor of yourself. Do you know, like, and trust yourself? Most women are walking around feeling very UNtrusting of themselves. Because somewhere along the lines they stopped believing themselves when they made promises to themselves. Ingredient #5: Self-Endorsement:  Figuring out who you are (and how you feel about yourself) regardless of what anyone else thinks. Here's the truth: It’s not practical (or even possible) for any woman to “not care” what other people think about her. Our brains are WIRED to care -- especially the FEMALE brain! We are WIRED to actively notice other people's opinions and judgments MORE than the male brain (I'll share more about this specific part of the brain in another episode)... But here's what IS possible: It's possible to figure out what it would take for YOU to value your own opinion of yourself more so (even just a little bit more so) than someone else’s opinion of you. This is the recipe to your FREEDOM and happiness and peace of mind. And at the end of the day -- that’s what you want! You might think you want to lose weight or be smaller or attract a better mate or make more money or whatever….but I promise you, what you really want is how you think you’ll feel if you get those things. But if you don’t address the self image and body image that’s causing you to think and act and feel and behave the way you are right now…..you’ll always end up back where you are.  That’s why I truly believe that a brain based approach and a self image solution is the only pathway to permanent transformation -- not just short term change. And in this episode I’m going to detail the 5 ingredients to the  recipe that you need to create true and lasting change in YOUR life.

Hello hello…my name is Ben Hilzinger and this is the Big Fat Snare Drum Podcast. We took a few weeks off, but to make it up to you, we have an insanely long episode. Terry Keating is one of my favorite YouTube personalities for obvious reasons. His enthusiastic approach to hosting a show and overall education style makes my heart so happy. Check out his John Bonham page Bonzoleum. I initially wanted to have him on the show to discuss 5 hidden gems in Bonzo's catalog that drummers might not necessarily know unless he or she is a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not NOT a fan, but I'd fall in the category that a lot of my peers fall into of “yeah I know Fool in the Rain, Good Times Bad Times, Rock 'n Roll and When the Levee Breaks, but I know I SHOULD know more.” I don't think we're a small group, so that's why I wanted to have Terry on. Anyways, we immediately started talking like old friends and so I put all my notes away and just pushed record. It ended being an almost 2 hr conversation about what makes Bonzo Bonzo, why people are obsessed with his gear as much as his playing (sometimes more), and just tons of anecdotes/fun pieces of trivia that only a Bonzo aficionado would know. I was gonna try to edit it down, but Terry is so fun to listen to so I basically kept the whole thing running. This might take a few listens, but this ended up being one of my favorite drumming conversations in the past few years. Thank you Terry for being so generous with your time and enthusiasm for all that is Bonzo. Alright, shutting up….cheers! Today's episode is brought to you by Clearsound Baffles. How you can serve and thrive in a crisis? This is a question being asked by many people. While the current COVID-19 crisis has created a lot of panic and financial stress, this is a great time to rethink how you can serve more and thrive doing it. I have heard many pundits, podcasters, and coaches telling us they will teach how you can serve and thrive in a crisis - but I often hear generalities about retooling. What does retooling mean? How do I do that?  So if you have lost your job, find yourself too dependent on the paycheck, or just realize this is the time to act - this is the podcast for you.  How You Can Serve and Thrive in a Crisis [Outline] Step 1 –  Get Control and Get A Plan Get control of you – your mental state. Wake up on time to work. Get ready for work. Your job NOW is to find people to serve. Make a schedule for the week - including workouts and work (get to that later) Realize you CAN make this work. Others can – you are not helpless. Go for a walk or do something physical for 20-40 minutes) Get a plan together. Make a list of 10-20 people you have served - people who paid you before, including their number or email.  Define what "need" you served before? Why did they pay you? What pain did you relieve? Cut hair Clean house Do office admin work Yards House repairs Physical Therapy Gym pro Teaching classes Etc Note: Many high paid professionals do not have answers to this (a lot of corporate people do not have a clear answer. Step 2 – Evaluate the Situation Talk to those you serve. They are STILL your customer if you can still serve them. Call your customers and find out how they are coping – what needs are unmet. Call 10 of them and ask: What is the biggest challenge they are having related to (what you did to serve them)? For example, a haircare person might as “What is the biggest challenge you are having with your hair right now?” Why are you having this challenge? (Do not assume it is because they cannot get you to do it – the answer might be different.) How do you feel about it? (Let their words speak to you.) What do you think you need? (Do not put words in their mouth – let them speak it) You MAY learn things like Hair going crazy and I feel ugly now and ashamed. Nails need to be done – I feel unkempt. I cannot work out and I feel fat and scared I am never going to be in shape again. Now having to teach my OWN kids – going nuts – I cannot do this. I do not know how to do things I SHOULD know. I feel stupid. Step 3 – Look for Alternatives to Retool Review notes from all your calls. What do you see they need? How can you provide that need NOW? Haircare and makeup needs (for those who did hair, nails, sell makeup, etc) Show them how to cut their own hair over a FaceTime and charge them for coaching. Sell them what they need to cut their hair (find tools online and either buy them and resell or become an affiliate.) Provide virtual hair/makeup consultations for people now on video meetings every day, or even professional tv personalities missing their hair/makeup crew. Product help – what to buy and how to use (Salespeople who now have stores closed.) Teach me what I need to buy using Amazon. Find the best deals for people in my product space. (Can do affiliates also.) Teach me how to use the products. Admin Work (for those who worked in offices.) How do people working online need to organize life? Now they need to organize files on computers and MAYBE have physical copies scanned and or filed. How can you do that for them from your home? Setting up Zoom meetings for them or calls. Managing calendars. Step 4 - How to Receive Payments from Your Customers PayPal account Fresh Books Zelle Venmo Square Cash Google Pay Apple Pay

Carrie Newcomer is an American performer, singer, songwriter, recording artist, author and educator. The Boston Globe described her as a “prairie mystic” and Rolling Stone wrote that she is one who “asks all the right questions.” According to a 2014 PBS “Religion and Ethics” interview, Newcomer is a “conversational, introspective” songwriter who “celebrates and savors the ordinary sacred moments of life and champions interfaith dialogue and progressive spiritualty.” Krista Tippett notes that Carrie is “best known for her story-songs that get at the raw and redemptive edges of human reality.” Newcomer is a committed Quaker and connects her faith, her sense of social justice, and her songwriting. “My songwriting has always had a spiritual current to it. There’s a spiritual current in my life, so there is in my work. Otherwise I’d be censoring something important.”  She has performed around the world for humanitarian efforts and carved out a niche as a folksinger who is also an international emissary for peace and tireless advocate for living a more contemplative life. “I would have to say that my most profound and consistent spiritual practice is songwriting—that idea of sacramental living, of seeing the world as sacrament, seeing life as a sacrament of compassion and forgiveness,” she says. Newcomer has produced 18 solo CDs, eight collaborative CDs, three DVD’s, two LP’s with Stone Soup, and has received numerous awards for her music and related charitable activities. Her most recent album is 2019 The Point of Arrival. She has released two books of poetry & essays, A Permeable Life: Poems and Essays and The Beautiful Not Yet: Poems, Essays & Lyric. Her song “I Should’ve Known Better” appeared on Nickel Creek’s Grammy winning gold album “This Side”, and she earned an Emmy for the PBS special “An Evening with Carrie Newcomer.” Newcomer says one of her greatest achievements is writing a song that has become an anthem for social justice activists. She wrote “Room at the Table” after listening to an interview about the importance of folk music to the American civil rights movement. “So, it’s done in call and response: ‘Let our hearts not be hardened to those living on the margin. There is room at the table for everyone.’” She cites Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan, “people creating music and trying to tell story in a poetic way” as influences on her songwriting style. The themes are deep: “There aren’t a lot of black-and-white answers, but… there’s a lot of good questions. I think folks are ready for conversations about questions without being told a pat answer.” She describes her work as “an art form that’s an authentic spiritual relationship that’s pressing in.” She says she has “spent a lifetime trying to describe in language those things we experience that have no words. You do that as a songwriter…Talking about that experience—what is it at the heart of things, right at the center of things. And what is this journey of trying to put into language these things we know, but we have no language for.” Many of the themes in Newcomer’s work come from her friendships and collaborations with activists, authors and religious figures like Parker J. Palmer, Jim Wallis, Scott Russell Sanders and Barbara Kingsolver. She also credits theologians, religious leaders and famous authors as influences. She has done numerous collaborations with authors, academics, philosophers and musicians, including Alison Krauss, Jill Bolte Taylor, Philip Gulley, Rabbi Sandy Sasso. Newcomer explains, “There is simplicity when you don’t know what else to do and then there is simplicity when you can play all sorts of notes and say all sorts of things but you don’t. It’s elegant, myself and all the musicians, it’s a very ego-less kind of playing.” Newcomer has had an ongoing, long-term collaboration with Parker J. Palmer, with whom she has co-written several songs and performed a spoken word/music in live performance, including Healing the Heart of Democracy: A Gathering of Spirits for the Common Good and What We Need is Here: Hope, Hard Times, and Human Possibility. Newcomer and Palmer also are actively collaborating on The Growing Edge, a website, podcast, and retreat. Three of Newcomer’s songs are included in Palmer’s newest book. Newcomer has toured the United States, Europe, Africa and India including performances with Alison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, American singer-songwriter David Wilcox in shows based on spiritual story. She gives a percentage of her album sales to charitable organizations including the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, American Friends Service Committee, America's Second Harvest, The Center for Courage and Renewal, and Literacy Volunteers of America. “Every album tour I try to partner with a particular social service or justice organization, and I try to choose something that kind of goes along with the themes of that particular album.” In 2009 and 2011 Newcomer traveled to India as a cultural ambassador, including musical performances organized by the U.S. State Department and worked with students of the American Embassy School in New Delhi. In 2011, she released the album, Everything is Everywhere, which featured Amjad Ali Khan and his sons, Amaan and Ayaan on traditional Indian instruments. In 2012, Newcomer made a similar trip to Kenya and performed at various locations in rural Chulaimbo, Kenya at the AMPATH HIV center in Eldoret. She says if she’s learned anything on her goodwill tours, it is that kindness will save the world. Not necessarily grand gestures, but simple small acts of compassion that she says are like the country cousin who sings in the kitchen and does the dishes before she’s even asked. Newcomer also speaks and teaches about creativity, vocation, activism, and spirituality at colleges, workshops, conventions, and retreats. She often explores the connection between creativity and the spiritual life. Newcomer’s first theatrical production, Betty’s Diner: The Musical, was performed at a sold out run at Purdue University in 2015 and is now available to interested theaters, universities, and spiritual communities. Newcomer is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the 2019 Shalem Institute’s Contemplative Voices Award. In 2016, Newcomer presented the Goshen College commencement address and was awarded an honorary degree in Music for Social Change. In 2010, Rich Warren, host of the Midnight Special radio program, selected Carrie Newcomer as one of the 50 most significant singer-songwriters of folk music for the last 50 years. Warren also selected her Geography of Light as one of his favorite CDs for 2008. Newcomer was born in Dowagiac, Michigan on May 25, 1958 to James B. Newcomer and Donna Baldoni Newcomer. Her mother was raised Catholic, a first generation American from an Italian family and her father was raised Methodist with a background as Mennonite and Amish. Newcomer grew up Methodist, but her fury with the traditional church’s treatment of women led her to find spiritual community with the Quakers. She began writing songs as a teenager and performing in restaurants, coffeehouses and at benefits and festivals. She began her university studies at Ball State University and then Goshen College. Newcomer spent five months teaching art in an elementary school in San Isidro, Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, she encountered the silent- unprogrammed Quakers in Monteverde. “It felt like home,” she says. She completed her studies at Purdue University and received a B.A. in visual art and education. Newcomer is married to Robert Shannon Meitus, an entertainment and intellectual property lawyer. She has one daughter, Amelia Newcomer Aldred. Carrie lives in the woods of southern Indiana with her family. Join us in conversation with this gifted artist and soulful performer!

So I wanted to switch things up a bit today and talk to you guys about something that I keep seeing pop up over and over again. It’s a topic that I witness inside the free Simplify your Sales FB group, and also inside my paid Mastermind Your Marketing group as well.    Anxiety.    It’s a very real thing and it absolutely has an effect on your ability to work on your shop + business.    If you’ve never struggle with anxiety, you don’t know just how crippling it can be and this episode might not even make sense to you. That’s okay-- no hard feelings.    However, if you struggle with anxiety, I want you to know that I’m here for you and I HEAR you. I want you to know that you’re not in this alone and that it’s something I’ve struggled with as well and it’s only in the past few months that I’ve really managed to contain it in regards to getting things done in my business. Not 100%, but it’s not my everyday normal anymore.    Now, that definitely didn’t happen overnight, it was a deliberate effort on my part.    Understanding that anxiety can be a fuel and not just an excuse. I’ve been blessed-- which I know is a weird and crazy thing to say-- with anxiety and the reason I say it can be a blessing is that even with it’s challenges, it allows me to never fully feel satisfied with what I have. Not in an ungrateful way, but in a way that I COULD do more and I COULD build something bigger. It motivates me to not get complacent in my business and has helped me accomplish AMAZING things. So yes, it’s a HARD thing— a DANG HARD THING— but there are hidden “blessings” that come from having it and using it to fuel your business.    So today I wanted to talk to you about some things that can help with managing your anxiety as an entrepreneur. Because while anxiety can be a great motivator, it can also be paralyzing if it gets out of control. And when it’s to that point, NOTHING feels possible. I’m going to share a bit about my personal experience as well— which feels VERY vulnerable— but I want you to see where I’m coming from and my experience with it and hopefully find some strength from MY story as you relate it to your own.    And just as a disclaimer, I’m NOT a professional-- these are just things to help you get a glimpse at what I do that has worked for me.  Where my anxiety came from Okay, so like I said, before we dive into some of my tips on managing anxiety, I wanted to share a little bit of personal detail about MY story and what triggered anxiety to start for me. I know some people have dealt with it their entire lives and I am amazed by you.   So just to set the record straight, I haven’t always struggled with anxiety-- I’m definitely blessed in that way. I always go back to when my first daughter was born in 2013 as kind of this “catalyst” for when I started my Etsy shop-- which is true-- but it’s also the period when I experienced anxiety for the first time in the form of a panic attack. 2013 was a BIG year for me in many, many ways.    I--literally-- thought I was dying the first time I felt major anxiety. I felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest in a frantic fury and that the oxygen was running out of the room. I remember curling up in a ball underneath a desk at my in-laws house one day a few weeks after my daughter had been born and rocking back and forth madly because I was convinced that I was going to crawl out of my own skin at any moment and I was trying to hold it all together-- quite literally.    Now not every moment of every day was panic-attack worthy, but it very quickly became my “new normal” that I would wake up in the morning with a dreaded pit in my stomach that would physically ACHE because I was so anxious about how I was going to get through the day. The idea of waking up with the baby at 6:30 am in the morning and knowing I had to go 12+ hours throughout the day with her in tow BY MYSELF [we had just moved to a new townhouse] and not knowing what the day would hold: would she nap? Eat well? Scream all afternoon? I literally had no idea basically convinced me that this was my new “normal” and that pit wasn’t going to go away.    Now, Juliet did eventually become a bit more predictable and stopped crying every minute of everyday— I mean, it took 6 months— but it happened. But funny thing: the anxious pit in my stomach didn’t go away.    Even if the day very rarely turned out EXACTLY how I had planned it in my head and on my to-do list, I was still a twisted mess of anxiousness throughout it all.   So with that post-partum anxiety, I also got post partum depression which was it’s own problem. That took about 18 months to go away-- at the time we didn’t have the medical insurance to get me help, and combined with a variety of other less-than-ideal factors and just general cluelessness that PPD was a real thing that needed to be treated, it lasted far longer than it should have.    If you are listening to this podcast and even THINK you might be struggling with post partum depression, please get professional help! Life does NOT have to feel this way permanently— and the sooner you get help, the sooner you’ll start to feel better. I know right now it doesn’t feel like you will. I’ve been there. I didn’t believe I could ever get better. But you can. AND YOU WILL.    Coming back to my journey with anxiety….At around 18 months post partum, I remember smiling-- truly smiling-- for the first time in a year and a half. We had just decided to plan our first family trip to Disneyland and I actually felt some degree of happy about it which was absolutely FOREIGN to me at the time.    My days got less and less dark as I was pulled out of the PPD. And someday I’ll talk more about how that happened.    But the anxiety? It stayed. And it’s still something I struggle with on a regular basis.    But it’s not my everyday normal. Before it would throw me into a full blown panic attack by breakfast, but nowadays it’s much more manageable and even after having my second child back in November 2018, it didn’t spiral out of control again-- for which I feel incredibly blessed.    A large part of that is because of skills I’ve learned that have helped me cope with it. Note that I’m not saying “thrived with it” because I still wouldn’t wish this upon myself or anyone I know, but these things have made it manageable as a mom, a successful business owner, and a human being in general.    I still struggle with anxiety. Point blank. It’s something that pops up a few times a day, but it’s not debilitating anymore.    However. It definitely HAS affected my work and ability to get things done in my businesses-- which I think if you’re still listening to this episode-- is something that you may be able to relate to and maybe even currently struggling with.    And that’s what I want to talk to you about today.    I want to share what I’VE found to help me as I work through it and get things done with my business. I’m not touting some “cure-all” or a way to manage anxiety in EVERY aspect of your life, but in regards to running an online business, I’m always looking for people who have gone through similar things to me and how they’ve dealt with it, so I hope you can use this episode in the same way.    Now, if you’ve been around for a while, you know that I started my Etsy shop, LittleHighbury, with a newborn in tow. Don’t ask me HOW— I still am unsure. But I needed an escape from motherhood, and running an online shop somehow happened and it became a much-needed distraction.    Now, less you think I hit the ground running, it’s important to understand that I wasn’t able to work on it all the time— in fact, I enlisted my mom and husband to do a lot of work for me— because my post partum depression would ebb and flow. Some days were easier than others. Most days were REALLY hard. In order to make it work, when I felt good, I worked on the business— answering convos, designing fabrics, etc.   When I was REALLY struggling, I gave myself a bit of grace and asked for help to fill orders.  It wasn’t ideal by any means, but it’s how I got things done. My husband is truly a rockstar and kept the business afloat more than once.    Things got A LOT easier when the PPD disappeared, but like I mentioned earlier, the anxiety stayed. And I still found it challenging on some days to actually get the work done— just the IDEA of working on my business caused my anxiety to spike.   But as LittleHighbury grew, it quickly became apparent that I would need to figure out something or some coping mechanism that allowed me to still get orders filled and completed— even if I was having an “off” day. The consistency in sales was incredible, but it also meant that I couldn’t just “disappear” for days at a time because things HAD to get done.    It’s the same thing with morgannield.com. I still get those massively anxious days, usually on days when I need to go live for a coaching call or a webinar. And the 3 tips I’m going to share with you are HOW I’m able to still get things done in the business even when all I feel like doing is curling up in a ball under the covers.    So again, the tips I’m sharing today are related to your Etsy shop business and how to cope with anxiety and still get things done. I realize this is just a TINY sliver of the anxiety you may be struggling with in your overall life, but I DO know that a lot of Etsy shop owners struggle with major anxiety whenever they think about working on their business, so that’s what I wanted to talk about today :)   Okay, let’s dive into some of the tips I’ve found that help me.    Okay— Tip #1 - Work through it - just get ONE thing done If you get anxiety about your never-ending to-do list, it can feel near IMPOSSIBLE to even look at your to-do list, let alone actually accomplish something off of it.    Trust me when I say I’m talking from SO much experience here.    When you’re stuck in the depths of anxiety, the idea of running a business can seem laughable at that point. Like, how are you supposed to accomplish ANYTHING when you feel this way?   And I get that-- I really do.    And again-- I’m no doctor or therapist, so take this for what it’s worth-- but I’ve found that a lot of times if I’m feeling anxious about my business in particular, it’s because I’m not actually making any progress in it.    Now, I don’t just mean that in terms of sales. I mean that I’m not ACTIVELY doing anything to grow my business. I know that there are things I SHOULD be doing to grow my business, but I’m afraid to start tackling some new task because it seems incredibly daunting or it’s not something I’ve ever done before or maybe I’m just feeling unmotivated.    That particular branch of anxiety is stemming from FEAR. And I’ve found that most business anxiety comes from that-- you’re worried about taking the leap or making the wrong “step” and that’s causing you to not make ANY progress (which, in turn, feeds your anxiety)    And sometimes just the ANTICIPATION of knowing it needs to get done is all it takes to send me into a wave of anxiety that is crippling as I spiral into the “I’m a failure, this is impossible, etc.” depths.    And guess what? When I feel like that, I don’t ever make that progress or get that thing done.    And so the process repeats itself again and again. Vicious cycle.    So my advice to you is this (and I know it’s harder than it sounds). Just do ONE THING.    Pick ONE thing to do today to grow your business.    It doesn’t have to be the hardest thing on your list or the most tedious. It just needs to be ONE thing.    And a lot of the time, I’ve found that if I can do that one thing and just get started, my anxiety becomes more manageable. I’m not saying it completely disappears, but I recognize my own strength that I CAN work through it.    And usually I want to keep going after that ONE thing.    As I was creating this podcast episode, this was actually INCREDIBLE prevelant. I have been putting writing this episode off because I was worried about what people would think-- since it’s not strictly “Etsy marketing advice.” And it felt daunting to lay it out on the line and talk so candidly about my struggles.    But as I was writing this episode, it felt AMAZING. I had to push myself MAJORLY to start, but once I did, the words came effortlessly.   Now this is obviously not going to work 100% of the time and your personal situation may be completely different. But getting started and just DOING SOMETHING and taking action instead of treading close to a panic attack about all the things that need to get done with my business has been an incredible help for my anxiety.    And after I finish that one thing-- if I’m still struggling, I can check out. I don’t have to log in 5 more hours. If I need some self care (like a nap), that’s totally okay. Assuming someone is watching the baby, of course!   But this way I KNOW I’ve done at least something to grow my business today-- and it makes the anxiety easier to cope with for tomorrow because I don’t have that added guilt of feeling like a failure + that my anxiety is in control and not me.    So on the days where you need to get things done but you don’t feel like you can do any of it, just pick ONE thing and do it. And then reassess— see how you feel— and make a decision after that.    Tip #2 - Figure out systems that can allow you to take a break if you need it.    Now, this doesn’t “solve” anxiety by any means. But it does take the pressure off, which is definitely something that anxiety feeds off of.    One of the most common problems I hear is that people are afraid that if they take a break from the business-- or stop working for a hot second-- that all their success--even if it’s just a little-- will disappear overnight.    I have two things to say to that: 1- Make sure you’re not relying solely on SEO for your sales. This is where a lot of that anxiety can stem from since you have 0 control of the Etsy algorithm and whatever tests and changes they decide to make on a whim. Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t worry about SEO at all-- you absolutely should have that set up so you have a strong foundation and can take advantage of the benefits of the built in traffic that Etsy naturally has.    And if you’re struggling to get that started or have been “working” on it for over 6 months and still aren’t done, I’d HIGHLY encourage you to check out my SEO One + Done course that will whip your SEO into shape for Etsy, Google, and Pinterest in just 14 days. So you can move on and cross SEO off your never-ending to-do list for good. Hallelujah!    Okay, and then thing #2 - Figure out how you can work “ahead” to take the pressure off when you really need it.   You’re not always going to be able to plow through things and get them done when you’re feeling particularly crippled by anxiety-- I know I’ve seen it in my own life-- and it’s AMAZING to have a sort of “buffer” to back you up when YOU need to step away from your business.    When you have those “good” days that you aren’t feeling the drag of anxiety, I want you to take advantage of them and work ahead in your business.    This may look like:   Create ready-to-ship orders Have canned responses ready for Etsy conversations Batch your social media + pre-schedule it in advance (+ keep a reservoir of content on hand for those “days”)  Set up an automated email sequence to sell your product for you (we talk about this inside MYM) Hiring a VA to do some of the “lifting” for you. You may not be to this point now-- and that’s okay! But this is a GAME CHANGER! Basically anything you can do to work ahead and not have to be in the moment all day everyday? DO IT.    Bottom line? You are allowed to take breaks, especially on those days that you are struggling.    Set up the systems and things in place so that you can feel okay when you DO take those breaks.    And going right along with that...   Tip #3 - Give yourself grace This is probably THE most important piece of advice I can give to you today and is CRITICAL for working when you have anxiety.    You’ve got to give yourself grace.    This is a lesson I learned the VERY hard way back in February 2018.    At that time I was running LittleHighbury, making consistent five-figure months, and I was also running morgannield.com-- the site I run today.    I had a hyper-active and very needy 4 year old at home, and I was lucky enough to have a surprise pregnancy that left me with a term only a few people know about-- hyperemesis gravidarum.    This is the Princess Kate sickness— the one she got with all 3 of her children. The one where you puke all day everyday for 9 months of your life while you’re carrying a child. You get to know the local hospital staff REALLY well, you get IV’s brought to you on a regular basis, and you become SUPER familiar with the toilet bowls in your house. You also realize that you don’t clean them nearly enough, but at that point, the smell of the cleaner makes you puke more so you let it slide.    So I was throwing up about 20+ times/day, taking care of my 4 year old who was only in preschool about 8 hours/week, and running two businesses.    Now, I wrote a very emotional blog post all about this that I’ll link to in the show notes which you can find over at morgannield.com/blog/episode4, but basically in February 2018 I had a mental breakdown-- I couldn’t stop sobbing (or puking) and my anxiety about everything was THROUGH THE ROOF. I literally thought I was going to die at any minute. I was trying to launch my Mastermind Your Marketing program for the 3rd time and also fill 20+ orders/day with LittleHighbury.   In between puke sessions.    Any NORMAL person would say that I was crazy-- and I totally was-- but at the time I was convinced that I had to keep doing both businesses or I would be a failure.   Now, I know most of you listening are Etsy shop owners and have never “launched” a digital course, but I’m here to say: IT’S A LOT OF WORK. What looks effortless on the outside is literally just that tip of the iceberg to a whole lotta crazy going on beneath the surface.    My husband found me in the bathroom after an especially grueling puke session and basically told me I had to stop. You know, in between the heaving and sobbing that I couldn’t control.    I couldn’t do both businesses AND be pregnant AND care for our 4 year old daughter anymore.   I couldn’t see it, but of course he was right.    So I (he, WE) made the decision to close up LittleHighbury right then and there.    And I had to GIVE MYSELF GRACE that at that exact moment in time, I couldn’t do it all.    And that was okay.    The world didn’t implode, our bank account didn’t dry up, the zombie apocalypse never happened-- (although if that does ever happen, I’m *pretty* sure I want to be one of the first to go. Kind of a “peace out, cub scout” sort of thing. And for the love of all that is holy, will someone PLEASE explain to me why you would ever want to survive a world where you’re constantly in fear of your life with zombies chasing you. I genuinely don’t understand that!)    Okay, so like I was saying before I popped onto my zombie soapbox-- none of those things happened.    But I was able to focus LESS on being busy and more on taking care of myself.    Not completing 20+ orders/day freed up A LOT of time that I was able to nap, watch movies, and recharge after an awful day when I felt like crap.    Now, those aren’t the most productive, amazing things ever.    But they were the grace I needed to get through that point in time.    And they ended up leading me to having my BIGGEST launch EVER because I was able to focus more on that instead of trying to split my time between managing two businesses.    So give yourself grace.    If you’ve got 4 kids under 4 and the little one kept you up all night teething, it’s okay that you didn’t add the 10 new products-- or even 1 new product-- to your shop that you “promised” yourself you would do today.    If you’ve had a family emergency and been putting out fires all day for everyone, it’s okay that you didn’t photograph your entire new product line today.    If you feel such a pit in your stomach for no reason at all that you can’t even get out of a bed, much less run a business, that’s okay.    You’ve GOT to take care of #1 first and foremost. And that #1 is YOU.    Your business isn’t going anywhere and it’s not going to go belly-up because you took a nap this afternoon that you really needed instead of answering 5 million Etsy convos.    Give yourself grace and give yourself permission to step away, take care of YOU and what YOU need, and then come back to the business.    I promise it’ll still  be waiting for you :)   ********* Conclusion   Holy cow. Okay, so I thought I’d maybe have a couple things to say about anxiety + running my business but apparently I had a TON to share. In a way, this episode has been therapeutic to me, and I hope you found some value in it. If nothing else, know that you are NOT alone. I still absolutely have days where I don’t want to show up or be running a business because my anxiety is sky high and I literally don’t feel like I can check my email without spiraling into major overwhelm and panic. Mondays, in general, are HARD for me.    It happens. It’s part of being a human who struggles with anxiety. And if that’s you as well, I’m here for you. You absolutely CAN run a business while struggling through anxiety. It’s not something I ever thought I would have to deal with, but I do and it’s here and to some extent? It’s a blessing as weird as that sounds. It means I need to be more thoughtful and deliberate about the things I DO work on and how I plan + run my business. Because some days I just can’t show up.    You are NOT your anxiety. It’s a part of you that you have to learn how to work with, but it isn’t “YOU” -- you are more than your anxiety and you’ve got this.    Alright guys, be sure to check the show notes for any resources I mentioned in the podcast + I’ll see you next week!

IF YOU'RE HUMAN, YOU'VE EXPERIENCED A SLUMP. I have wanted to speak on this topic for a long time. And I think that's partially because sometimes I feel like people think I don't experience slumps, or low motivation. Which is hilarious because motivation is NOT how people become successful in any area of life. Discipline and a strong why is how I believe people build success - in the gym, in life, in business, in relationships. With that, I think we've all experienced a slump in life or biz or fitness. You just have no motivation or motivation for the wrong things. Like you're motivated to work on creative things but they're really just busy work and have nothing to do with your essential task. Example - wakes up wanting to create new content for a project that isn't on the table until 2021…but should really track numbers from your last launch…yes, this was me last month. Or you go to the gym and just walk on the treadmill instead of getting your lift in (we'll talk about this). Or you're just beside yourself. Not in an angry or upset way. But you're observing your current state and not digging it? Have you ever been there? You're not where you think you should be, you're unsatisfied but not sure why? Something is just OFF. Today I plan to give you three tools to pull yourself out of the slump and into the RIGHT ACTION - to get you feeling accomplished and proud of your decisions. In alignment if you will. Before we dive into these tactics I want to make clear that this will take time and effort no matter which you choose. I may be helping you get out of a slump but it won't be by snapping your fingers. Also, mind you that these tips are coming from a very systematic, black and white human. So these may be different than what might be best for you. Either way, let's get to it! #1 - Revisit the year plan, month plan, big goal, or weekly tasks. This tip assumes that you have already established a goal, some destination you'd like to reach this year or month or whatever. It assumes you have taken the time to set a new standard, and you're feeling off track from the original route. If you have not actually laid out your goal with an action plan…well that's your new step one. I'll share my example because like I said, this literally happened to me a while back. I felt like I was twiddling my fingers and kind of wading in the water versus going to toward a goal with clarity. It doesn't take long for me to address this issue because wading in the water is not productive and I hate not being productive. So, I used tool #1. I found myself wanting to start a new project - a project I don't plan to start until 2021 or while we're home for three months in 2020. THAT is not what I needed to be doing. And it would not have been a wise use of my time. I was aware of that, yet I still felt lost as to how I SHOULD be spending my time. Enter revisiting the year, month or week plan. Or all of those for that matter. I plan three priorities for my week. This happens on Fridays, when I review my week - three wins, three lessons, three priorities for the upcoming week. I learned this practice in my mastermind in 2019 and while it was overwhelming at first, it was SO EFFECTIVE for me. Therefore I've kept that habit rolling strong into 2020. For the week we're discussing, I'd laid out my three priorities in my journal. It just so happened that I'd already accomplished two of my three priorities - two tasks which had a lot of stress tied to them.  This is likely why I was left feeling unmotivated and a bit drained after completing them. When Thursday rolled around, I was lost. Blank schedule. So why not create something new, right?! NO. Sure, maybe if the top priorities are done. But they weren't. So instead of starting a brand new project, I got my eyeballs on the third priority. And that felt UH-MAZING. It had been a top priority to draft up podcasts through the time that we'd be in Pa...

Leaving your job can be pretty scary. The idea itself it super scary. What if I am still not happy when I leave my job? This job already gives me a lot of stability. I SHOULD be happy where I am. But you may not feel quite right where you are. And this episode is all about telling you that is totally ok. Because often times we are scared to talk about how we do not like our job: What if our boss finds out? What if I am seen as weak? This week, I chat with Megan Smiley, who left her law practice to become a Director of International Programs at Fordham Law School, and also has her own podcast - interviewing lawyers who left the profession. In this episode, she talks about how she was able to transition out of her legal practice, the exact steps she took, and the stories of other former lawyers who left and transitioned multiple times. The conversation we had goes to show that there is really no right or wrong answer; you have to find that answer within yourself and you can also get there with some help.  Show notes: Podcast: The Lawyer’s Escape Pod https://thelawyersescapepod.podbean.com/ https://www.thelawyersescapepod.com/

Explore Your Enthusiasm, with Tara Swiger | Craft | Art | Business

Are you stuck between two really great ideas? Wondering if you have to choose or if you should just do them both at the same time? How could you choose between them? Today I’m going to help you answer one of the BIGGEST questions I get about creating do-able plans for your next goals: Do I have to pick just one and how the heck do I do that?! In my book Map Your Business and in my Starship Program, you begin by getting clear on your big vision. Then you set a goal and break it down into steps and actionable to-dos. For the last two weeks we’ve talked about how to stay on top of those To Dos, so they actually get done. But this week we’re going to back up and answer the question: How do you even pick the next goal? Especially when you have several projects that all look like good options? This question came up in the monthly coaching call inside the Starship Program (learn more at taraswiger.com/starshipbiz) and it’s one I know we all deal with. So let’s break it down - do you need to pick just ONE goal? And if so, how can you decide? You can find a worksheet to help you apply what you learn in today’s episode here. Do you need to pick just ONE goal? I get this question ALL the time, because my Map Making process involves making a really detailed plan for ONE goal at a time. So the short answer is yes, in order to make a detailed plan and get it accomplished, you need just one goal. Can you work on more than one goal at a time? Well, it depends. What’s your time frame? Over the course of a year, you’re going to be reaching a lot of different goals. Over the course of a week, you will get distracted if you focus on too many at once. This is why I set the timeline in the Map Making process for three months. That’s a good amount of time to set a goal, work on it, adjust your path, and learn quite a bit about what the project requires. It’s a short enough time frame that you won’t forget what you’re working towards and you won’t get bogged down in doing the same thing, and still a long enough time frame that you can see some real progress. It also depends on the kind of goal you have. There are income or sales goals. There are habit goals. There are KPI goals. There are award goals. For example, most makers I talk to want to get more consistent with their social media. That is something you can do while you’re working on a sales goal. I’d encourage you to make the goal more measurable, like “I want to post on Instagram 5x/week”. You’re going to do that alongside a lot of other stuff. And still, I recommend you let that be your ONLY goal for at least the first month as you get used to it. Why focus? Why focus on just one at a time: You’ll be focused (this is one of the main benefits of setting ANY goal) You’ll know what to do next and how to prioritize You’ll see faster progress You’ll learn faster and can change it up The sense of accomplishment will keep you going. If you want to learn more about setting the right-sized goal, check out episodes 191 on stretch goals and episode 91 on why you’re afraid of big goals. So you want to narrow it down, but you’ve got two really great ideas. Perhaps you’re debating, as one of my Starship Captains did: Should I focus on increasing my online sales or my wholesale sales? Or: Should I focus on my email list or Instagram? Should I self-publish a book, or sell more patterns to magazines? First, some good news. Any goal is good.  Anything you commit yourself to, make progress on, and learn from, is going to improve your business and your life. You’re going to be in a better place in 3 months than if you didn’t pick anything. So take some of the pressure off, ok? Now, when it comes to choosing a goal, I like to ask Captains two questions: Questions to ask to choose the next right project: What is closer to money? Where is your enthusiasm? What is closer to money? This is one of my favorite questions, because it’s gonna get you fast results: What is the project you can work on that is closest to making money? For example, if you have products in your shop, selling one of them is the absolute fastest way to make money. If you have customers, having them buy again is closer to money than finding new buyers. Self-publishing your finished pattern is a lot closer to money than pitching it to publishers. You feel me? However, lemme warn you that you can not build your whole business doing just what’s closest to money, because it will wear you out and not necessarily take you the direction you want to go. You want to balance choosing quick-money options with long-term right-direction goals. But I’m really disappointed at how many people say they have a business but NEVER do the thing that will make money - instead they focus on metrics that look good - like more instagram followers or more prestigious partnerships. If it’s been a while since you focused on SELLING your thing directly to the people who want to buy it, then I’m going to suggest you pick whichever project is closer to money Where is your enthusiasm? Here’s the thing: most people who tell me they can’t decide between a few options, it’s because they are piling up the SHOULDS. Well, I SHOULD do this. A REAL business would do this.I don’t have as big an Instagram following as that person, so I should improve that.  No, no, NO.  Our aim isn’t to build A business, it’s to build YOUR dream business. Which goal is aligned with what you’re most enthusiastic about? Are you LOVING working with your newest retail shops? Are you throwing confetti every time you get a response to your newsletter? Yeah, you might not be enthusiastic about the WORK involved in your goal, but are you enthusiastic about the end goal? Or some part of the process? Then go with that.  You are going to have the MOST progress and grow the fastest by looking at what you’re genuinely enthusiastic about, and following it. It might not be strategic but all of my best moves have been following my enthusiasm. I did plan to start a podcast, but I started it in one week and it’s been one of the best things for my business. I did not plan to start a Facebook group right before Thanksgiving, but it’s been an amazing place to be - I LOVE meeting and approving new people who apply. I did not plan to create a worksheet for this podcast episode, but you know what? I’m feeling it! If you go with your enthusiasm, you’re going to be more likely to follow through. So that’s how I decide on a project - commit to following through on ONE aim in the next three months and then ask yourself - what is closest to money? What am I most enthusiastic about? Drop all the shoulds, and go full speed to what you want. I created a worksheet to help you answer these questions, you can grab it here. Wishing you an enthusiastic and peaceful end of year!   Listen in at TaraSwiger.com/podcast289
