Legendary Recording Engineer, Studio Owner, Speaker Design, Record Producer & Businessman Allen Sides sits down with Drew Dempsey in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound as well as special guests, 10x Grammy Winning Recording Engineer & Producer Joe Chiccarelli as well as Sunset Sound studio owner Paul Camarata. Allen began his Ocean Way Recording in a garage in Santa Monica, California, in 1968, as a place to showcase his custom monitors. From these humble beginnings the empire expanded to include partnering with Bill Putnam and acquiring his United Recording Studio in Hollywood, and building state of the art recording facilities in Nashville, St. Barths, and nearby Sherman Oaks. The Ocean Way "brand" also includes Allen's high-end (and excellent sounding) monitors, a unique and affordable microphone, excellent UAD plug-ins, drum samples, and even an iPad/iPhone app. Allen is also well known for being a meticulous engineer/producer, having worked with such artists as Phil Collins, Green Day, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, Wynonna Judd, Beck, Mary J. Blige, Ry Cooder, Joni Mitchell, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, André Previn, Michael Jackson, and Frank Zappa. He's also well known for leading the charge on reclaiming classic tube mics and gear that was being abandoned in the '80s; he has probably listened to, and evaluated, more microphones than most of us ever will. Having owned Record One Studio in the hey-day of recording, Allen was very open about the Michael Jackson sessions as well as selling the establishment to Rap Mogul Dr. Dre Allen has since sold Ocean Way Recording Studio as well and is now fully engulfed in the speaker game. Are you tired of politicians making empty promises and not addressing the real issues in your city? Look no further than Libertarian candidate Ronald Tracy Robison, who is running for city council in Jacksonville, Florida. In this episode, Robison sits down with host Brian Nichols to discuss the negative impact of government intervention on the free market during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in the supply chain and the resulting economic deficit. He also cites the shut down of 130 businesses and 67% of jobs not returning as a result of the safer at home law implemented by the Republican mayor. Robison also shares his thoughts on the negative impact of the CDC moratorium on the housing market, leading to a rise in crime and homelessness. He also discusses the current housing market in Jacksonville and how it is not as strong as it appears, with debt being moved from one sector to the next, resulting in higher costs for housing. But Robison doesn't just point out the problems, he also offers solutions. He suggests that private companies can be contracted to fix infrastructure issues such as flooding in the Ocean Way area and proposes regular inspections to prevent similar issues in the future. He also expresses his support for school choice, and argues that property tax reform would be necessary in order to support school choice and vouchers for other schools. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from a candidate who truly wants to make a difference in Jacksonville. Tune in now and be part of the change you want to see in your community! I'm Breathless: Music from and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy, referida comumente como I'm Breathless, é a segunda trilha sonora da artista musical estadunidense Madonna, que inclui faixas da trilha sonora do filme Dick Tracy e outras canções inspiradas no longa-metragem.

Episode 8 Al SchmittPart 1 Song Chronicles is proud to present the first of a two-part interview with Al Schmitt. These episodes offer a unique behind-the-scenes look - from a master of his craft – on what happens on the other side of the glass when musicians go into a recording studio. Al Schmitt is the definition of a living legend. During his unparalleled career, the 90-year-old engineer/producer has worked with an incredible list of musical giants: Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Sam Cooke, Barbra Streisand, Henry Mancini, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Steely Dan, Celine Dion, Queen Latifah, and more are names that only scratch the surface of a career of the highest excellence: his knowledge and work ethic makes the greatest of greats want him at the helm. The arc spans far and wide with Frank Sinatra to Bob Dylan singing Sinatra, as well as Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable”. Al Schmitt with Niko Bolas Now in his seventh decade at the board, Al has hardly slowed down. He has just finished mixing a new album from Diana Krall, with whom he already has earned three Grammys. In fact, Al has won more Grammys – 20 – than any other engineer and ranks among the top 15 of all-time Grammy winners. During Neil Young sessions at Capitol (Neil Young and Niko Bolas pictured) I met Al when he came to speak to the members of the Blackbird Academy’s audio engineering program that I enrolled myself in last year in Nashville. He came in with his good friend, and fellow producer/engineer, Niko Bolas, who I've been fortunate to know since I was 18, when I was recording at Record One in Sherman Oaks (a studio once owned by Allen Sides as part of Ocean Way), where Niko was working alongside producer/engineer, Val Garay. I spoke with Al recently, August 4, 2020, during the quarantine. We spoke via video on Zoom, talking about his illustrious career, innovative recording techniques, and the musicians who he’s worked with. Al Schmitt and Steve Genewick Al developed his love for the studio very early in his life. As a child, the New York City native hung out at the recording studio owned by his uncle, Harry Smith. Not the folklorist Harry Smith but the Harry Smith (née Schmitt) who ran the first independent recording studio on the east coast. He was starry-eyed with his uncle’s work and life. Les Paul was his “Uncle Les,” who took young Al to hockey games, boxing matches, and bar. Smith instilled in Al some valuable lessons about studio work, such as: “You’ve got to treat your equipment like a Swiss watch and it’ll take care of you”. Al says that’s why you’ll never see him putting coffee and stuff like that on his console. His uncle also lined up an apprenticeship for him, then 19 and just out of the Navy, at Apex Recording Studios, where he received tutelage from another of his mentors, the fabled engineer/producer Tom Dowd, who Al describes as “one of the great engineers of all time.” It was at Apex too that Al ran, quite by accident, his first recording session for none other than Duke Ellington – and a very kind Duke, who told the novice engineer: “Don’t worry son, we’re gonna get through this. It’s gonna be fine.” Al has become known for his clean, unembellished sound, which he developed early on when he only had a few microphones to work with. This taught him the importance of mic placement to get the sound right for a take, particularly because there wasn’t the technology yet to go back and fix a take. “I've always been an experimenter with microphones and how to set up things,” he reveals. “I set up a big band one day and the next day I'd set them up exactly the opposite and I'd move them around the room until I got the best place.” Al Schmitt & Niko Bolas with John McBride, visiting the students in Mark Rubel's class at The Blackbird Academy (we all wore ties in their honor) After close to a decade in New York (where he also worked at Atlantic Records and Fulton Recordings) in 1958, Al moved to Los Angeles. He was an engineer first at the highly popular Radio Recorders studio before moving over to RCA in 1963. A few years later, Al convinced RCA to promote him to a producer, but there was one downside of a dream job: because of union rules, he could no longer work the board. “I could reach over and do something like on the echo or whatever, and (then they would) call me up on the carpet for touching the board.” It was also time-consuming. “Eddie (Fisher) would be 2-5 (pm) and then Jefferson Airplane would be 8 ‘til 3, 4 in the morning. And by the time I got home, I'd get a little sleep. And, I'd have to come back to work because I had 11 artists that I was taking care of. So I had to do budgets. I had to hire arrangers for artists.” He quit this RCA job, but the Jefferson Airplane hired him back as their producer, persuading him to finish the album because they loved his work so much. Al went on to produce several more albums for the band and for others; however, by the early 70s, he realized how much he missed engineering. So while he has continued to be a producer (on albums for Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Al Jarreau, George Benson, to name a few), the bulk of Al’s massive, and impressive, body of work has been doing what he loves best – being an engineer. Not only has Al achieved great success in his prolific career – he has worked on over 150 gold and platinum albums – but he has achieved in an amazing range of genres: jazz, rock, pop, country, soundtracks, holiday music, Latin, rap, and blues. Capitol Recording Studios, Al's second home
Michael joined John on the Phone to talk about his new Music - Brand New Heartache , we also spoke about his Previous Songs , including - Please don't cry ( with Neil Finn) and Turn this Love around. Michael is an Australian singer/songwriter. His music has been described as a fusion of folk, Americana and rock with hints of artists such as The Beatles, Wilco, Eagles and Ron Sexsmith. From intimate solo shows to full band performances, his songs are deceptively simple about complex things: love, family, home, and trust. Michael's new single Please Don't Cry ( ft. Neil Finn) was recorded in NZ at Roundhead Studios a few years prior as part of an experience offered by Medicine Mondiale. Michael knew that opportunity had to be his and grabbed onto it with everything he had. He won and got to spend two days recording with Neil Finn. Neil chose two songs from a batch of demos and the final versions of these songs, especially Please Don't Cry have a warm and personal feel that Michael is so excited to share. Neil worked with Michael on two songs Please Don't Cry and Hinges both of which also feature Neils vocals on the track. They were never released as Michael went to the US soon after to record his debut EP. Upon returning from that experience and release, Michael finished the Roundhead songs back in Australia working with old pals Gideon & Daniel Frankle who helped shape the track with extra instrumentation, lap steel by Ed Bates, Mixed by Tony Buchen (Courtney Barnett, Tim Finn) and Mastered by Steve Smart ( Vance Joy, Midnight Oil). In the past couple of years Michael had been co-writing with Grammy-award winning artist Frank Myers ( All 4 One, Lonestar, Alabama). This songwriting resulted in an EP recorded at Ocean Way studios in Nashville. Produced by Frank Myers and Jimmy Nichols ( Faith hill, Reba McIntyre) the songs were recorded and mixed by Steve Marcantonio (John Lennon, J. Geils, George Strait, Alabama and recently Thomas Rhett, Taylor Swift and Steven Tyler) The songs became Michael’s new EP ‘Turn This Love Around’. Please Don't Cry re-recorded for the US market with a distinct Nashville tone was the first single released and In September 2018, Burrows released his second single "Turn This Love Around." The song debuted at No. 39 on Australia's iTunes Store, No. 2 on the iTunes Rock Chart, and No. 14 on Australian Independent Record Labels Association's singles chart. The singles received light to mild rotations across commercial, independent and community stations. From ABC with Myf Wurhurst to Triple M, Triple M Country and album of the week for ABC Widebay. All 3 single releases have been picked up by Coles Radio ( Australia's largest digital station) In January 2019, "Turn This Love Around" made its US premiere on Atwood Magazine and landed on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart for 5 weeks, reaching its peak at No. 24. The single's success carried over to his following single "Brightest Star," which peaked on the same chart at No. 25. Both singles became part of Burrows' debut EP Turn This Love Around, which was released in June. Both Billboard tracks have also received significant radio play within the US in 2019 appearing on shows like 'The Jim Brickman show ( syndicated to 200's of stations), NPR's WLRN ( Folk & Acoustic Music Show) , Voice Of America (measured weekly audience of more than 275.2 million people around the world), Acoustic Cafe ( RDR Radio, LLC) and hundreds of other commercial stations across the AC and AAA radio format. Just recently Michael's songs made the official ballot for the Grammys 2019 for two songs ' Turn This Love Around ' ( Best pop solo performance & best pop vocal album) and ' Brightest Star' ( Best American Roots performance & Best American Roots song)

Call for Proposals: Symposium on Sound, Rhetoric, and Writing ***UPDATE (12/11/17): Out of respect for the slew of deadlines that comes with the end of a semester, the organizers have extended the submission deadline for this symposium till January 1, 2018.*** We invite proposals for the first-ever Symposium on Sound, Rhetoric, and Writing, to be held in the cities of Nashville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on Sept. 7 & 8, 2018. From Belmont University’s Gallery of Iconic Guitars to historic recording studios like Ocean Way, from Middle Tennessee State University’s Center for Popular Music to its Department of Recording Industry, these two cities are home to a wealth of sound culture and music history, making them a fitting place for a gathering of sonically inclined rhetoric and writing scholars. Over the past decade, sound has become an increasingly popular topic for rhetoric and writing scholars working in both English and communication (see Gunn et al.). Rhetoric and writing scholars have approached sound from a number of angles, often in ways that resonate with interdisciplinary fields like sound studies and disability studies. This work has appeared across print-based and digital journals in the field, frequently gathered in special issues like enculturation’s “Writing/Music/Culture” (1999), Computers & Composition and C&C Online’s “Sound in/as Compositional Space” (2006), Currents in Electronic Literacy’s “Writing With Sound” (2011), and Harlot’s “Sonic Rhetorics” (2013). This symposium aims to provide a dedicated space for rhetoric and writing scholars to present and discuss scholarship focused on sound. While we invite a wide range of proposals that take up expansive conceptions of “sound,” “rhetoric,” and “writing,” we offer the following as potential starting points: Sounding out the disciplinary relationships between rhetoric, writing, and sound studies Sound and/as accessibility Listening as a rhetorical practice How histories of rhetoric, writing, and composition can speak to current studies of sound Sonic archives and the history of sound Rhetorical aspects of/approaches to sonic environments The possibilities of sound as a scholarly medium/mode The relationship of sound to other media/modes/modalities Interdisciplinary possibilities for rhetorical work on sound Voice as a sonic phenomenon Empirically and/or theoretically informed approaches to integrating sound into rhetoric and/or writing classrooms We anticipate a relatively small symposium (
