President Donald Trump has many U.S. allies on edge, but you wouldn't know it from talking to Peter Kyle, the UK's secretary of state for science, innovation and technology. He's a relentless believer that the UK and U.S. will join forces on artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. But his rosy vision faces real obstacles, like the Trump administration's criticism of the UK's digital taxes, and its free speech record. Plus, Elon Musk's very vocal disdain for Prime Minister Keir Starmer. On POLITICO Tech, host Steven Overly called up Secretary Kyle at the end of his recent West Coast visit to discuss. Denmark's Prime Minister is clearly worried enough about President Trump's threats over Greenland to embark on a tour of European capitals to drum up support. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Notes on new UK AISI minister, published by Pseudaemonia on July 6, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. As of today, Peter Kyle is the UK's new Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, which means he's the elected official responsible for UK AISI. Here are some brief notes I found on Peter Kyle's stance on AI (all from his Wikipedia page). Peter Kyle was appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology in September 2023. In October 2023, Kyle said that a future Labour government would reduce regulations on technology companies in the development and use of AI and "put it to work for everyone from every background." In November 2023, Kyle outlined Labour policies to impose stricter regulations on general AI research companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic with stronger requirements for reporting, data-sharing, and user safety. Kyle has also proposed the creation of a 'Regulatory Innovation office', which would expedite important regulatory decisions. In February 2024, Kyle announced that Labour would scrap the existing voluntary testing agreement between technology companies and the British government, instead creating a statutory regime in which AI businesses would be required to share with the government the results of their test data. He claimed that this would enable the government to better understand the risks involved in AI and the challenges it could pose to different industries and society in general. He also met with representatives of the United States government and AI companies in Washington, United States, including Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Google, Apple, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org
Labour has launched a 25,000 word manifesto and as promised, there were no new rabbits and no hats. What we saw in Manchester was a newly confident Labour leader who barely paused in his answers to media questions: his lines were to script, his answers brief, and his stories well honed. But there were noticeable gaps in Labour's offering. Only two brief mentions of child poverty, and no restoration of the benefit to families of 3 children. That's despite another 100 thousand kids being pushed into poverty in the last year alone. Labour talks about 'hard choices' - but if this isn't a Labour priority, what is? We ask Labour's Peter Kyle what happens to those kids if the promised 'growth in the economy' doesnt come fast.Editor: Tom HughesSenior Producer: Gabriel RadusProducer: Zeynel Can YuceSocial Media Editor: Georgia Foxwell Video Production: : Rory Symon, Shane Fennelly & Arvind Badewal You can listen to this episode on Alexa - just say "Alexa, ask Global Player to play The News Agents"!The News Agents is brought to you by HSBC UK - https://www.hsbc.co.uk/https://store.global.com/collections/the-news-agents

Two massive by-election losses in Tory heartland. Are Rishi Sunak's hopes of holding onto his premiership next year in tatters? They may still win Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire back in next year's general election, but that doesn't arrest the growing expectation that there is a distinct possibility the Conservatives could soon face electoral annihilation. We speak to Lara Spirit, editor of The Times' Red Box, to understand the political implications for the Tories and Sunak in the wake of last night's results. And - a voice from each party. Tory MP Robin Walker, who, despite campaigning in Mid Beds is still confident his party can recover (though one might say there's a slight falter in his voice);Lib Dem Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper tries to dampen her party's disappointment;and Labour shadow secretary Peter Kyle, who led the Labour campaign in Mid Beds has a thing or two (or three) to say about the Lib Dem's campaign - which he calls 'filth'.Editor: Tom HughesSenior Producer: Gabriel RadusProducer: Laura FitzPatrickPlanning Producer: Alex BarnettSocial Media Producer: Phoebe Dampare-OseiVideo Producers: Rory Symon & Ben BateYou can listen to this episode on Alexa - just say "Alexa, ask Global Player to play The News Agents".

Angela Rayner made also a promise to change anti-strike laws within the first 100 days of a Labour government, in her speech to the TUC.So on the day that Labour gets serious about the next election, Emily hears from Labour's Peter Kyle - the new Shadow Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology. He's also running their campaign in the Mid Bedfordshire by-election and claims the Lib Dems there have launched "personal attacks" on the Labour candidate there. The Lib Dems say no personal attacks have been made. A source said: "People in Mid Bedfordshire are disappointed that Labour have chosen a London councillor as a candidate to represent their rural towns and villages. After Nadine Dorries, people want a local MP, not someone who has been parachuted in." And could there be a spy for China in Parliament? If so, how did they get there and what damage could be done? As further strikes take place across the country this week, the Royal College of Nursing has threatened its biggest walkout in England next month unless talks with the government progress soon. At the same time, Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer has warned the NHS will “die” without drastic change. But it's not just industrial action in the health service the government is up against; teachers plan to walk out in February too and rows across the transport network are among those ongoing. Is there a way forward to end strikes across different areas of the public sector? And do unions think Labour have a better plan for the health service? The Sussex coast has been with Peter Kyle all his life. Growing up in Bognor, where Anita Roddick gave him the impetus to go back to school and on to university – to life as the MP for Hove, and shadow schools minister. Peter Kyle has led an extraordinary life. His misdiagnosed dyslexia meant he had to sit his A Levels again at 25, going back to his old school. He'd been inspired to get his A levels in order to go to university by Anita Roddick, who he worked for at The Body Shop. It's just one of many incredible moments that contribute to his unique drive. Today, on 'Let's Talk Property' I speak to Peter Kyle, Member of Parliament for Hove since May 2015, about a recent headline grabbing 'sex for rent' case. This raises some disturbing issues surrounding the local housing crisis we have in Brighton & Hove. Brighton & Hove has very high property prices, a shortage of availability and a lot of young people coming into the city to study at universities with ubiquitous access to the internet via mobile phones. We find there are some landlords advertising for free accommodation... Well, supposedly free accommodation. But, what's the catch? Listen to my podcast to find out. March 2021

This interview is from a series of events, blogs and discussions around The Future of Work. We're thinking about what work is, and whether noise about automation, migration and four day weeks - trade wars, skills gaps and the fourth industrial revolution - is hot air or genuinely changing our lives for ever. In this podcast, Richard has a chat with Dr Peter Kyle MP about politics, policy, Brexit and where the future workforce is coming from. Peter Kyle has been the Labour Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade since 2015, a marginal constituency of which only 12 out of the last 69 years has not had a Conservative incumbent. In the 2017 election, Peter unexpectedly turned a majority of just over a thousand into one of nearly 19,000. Peter Kyle's has often talked openly about his challenges managing acute dyslexia and being an openly gay teenager in a small conservative Sussex town, to completing a doctorate in Community Development, and becoming a special adviser on social exclusion to Tony Blair's government in 2006. Following his position as Deputy Chief Executive of the charity leaders' network ACEVO, Peter was appointed the inaugural CEO of Working For Youth, a national youth employment and work mentoring charity. In parliament, Peter has been a strong proponent of apprenticeships, workforce reform, and technical education, sitting on the Business & Industrial Strategy Select Committee. We spoke in March 2019 about education and the future workforce, but that week some of his closest friends and colleagues had quit the Labour party to form a new independent group and Peter was making international headlines himself with his compromise amendment to push the government towards a second people's vote on Brexit - and that is where we started. --- Useful links: https://www.peterkyle.co.uk/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Kyle https://twitter.com/peterkyle https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-second-referendum-peter-kyle-phil-wilson-amendment-labour-jeremy-corbyn-a8804971.html --- What did you think of Peter's views on democracy and policy, education and where our focus should be? This isn't just a podcast, it's Changing Politics. This week, the news roundup is entirely focused on the top five candidates to replace Theresa May, as determined by the bookies. We actually recorded this on Tuesday afternoon, before the vote of no confidence was called on Wednesday morning - how could we possibly know it would be relevant? We must be psychic. In the second half of the show, Marie and Gráinne look at sex for rent, a seemingly personal arrangement that can become infinitely more sinister.
