The main purpose of this micro-episode is to give you the details on the much ballyhooed Philadelphia area meet-up of fans of the podcast. The date is this Friday, October 6, 2023. The place will be Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company, 909 Ray Avenue, Croydon, Pennsylvania. The official start-time is 5:00 pm, but if you can't get there so early rest assured that I'll be around until at least 7:30, and certainly as late as the conversation remains fun and interesting. I'll aim to get there at 4:30 or so to check out the room I reserved, which I believe they call “the nook.” I trust many of you will recognize me from my photo on the website or on Twitter or Facebook, but in case not I'll be wearing a red “History Nerd” cap. I also read a short excerpt from Yascha Mounk's new book The Identity Trap: A Story of Ideas and Power in Our Time, which I highly recommend. Mounk explores the philosophical roots of critical theory and the full range of ideas clumsily lumped together as "wokeism," or "the successor ideology." The book is extremely useful for understanding how we arrived at our current identity politics, and is relevant to understanding the "history wars" that have played out over the last four or five years. You can buy it through the link above.
In this two-part series, I talk to Amber Lynne Connell, an expert in adolescent psychology about gender and sexual identity. Here, in part one we unravel the intricacies of gender and sexual identity among teenagers. Who knew that our gender identity begins forming as early as five years old? Or that biological sex extends far beyond the traditional XX and XY to a spectrum of 27 different possible variants? This episode is ripe with revelations about how societal norms begin to influence our identities even before we're born.Ever wondered about the difference between biological sex and gender identity? Brace yourself as we debunk misconceptions and illuminate the truth in a comprehensive discussion differentiating the two. We'll explore how Gen Z and younger generations are shattering conventions, fostering open dialogues about gender and sexual identity. Let's navigate through terms like non-binary, gender fluid, and agender, and understand how we can bolster support for those on their self-discovery journey. As we move towards the end, we discuss the monumental importance of affirming our children's pronouns and names, potentially providing a lifeline for queer and trans teens. We'll share tips on navigating these changes as a parent. Finally, we spotlight resources available for parents, like the PFLAG organization, spotlighting the pivotal role a supportive community can play. Tune in and join our endeavor to create a more inclusive, understanding world for the sake of our future generations.Bio:Amber Lynn Connell is a licensed professional counselor with over 15 years experience working in various mental health settings. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the Owner of Carfagnohttps://www.c3xnow.com/ ( Cleaning) and Founder and Host of the https://www.buzzsprout.com/653395 (Smart Cleaning School Podcast), Ken Carfagno. The Smart Cleaning School Podcast was started with the purpose of finding good individuals in the cleaning industry to send the public to and to give a platform to. The Smart Cleaning School offers training and membership groups for new individuals to help develop a business owner mindset and offer resources. Ken explains that when Covid hit, businesses were crushed. Some residential cleaning businesses Ken was connected to, lost around 90% of their revenue within weeks due to Covid. Ken explains that once the fear and uncertainty subsided, residential cleaning businesses, for the most part, were able to make a significant rebound in their space. However, the commercial cleaning businesses had a different experience with Covid. Some of these businesses fell completely while others grew substantially. Their growth was due to the increased need for proper disinfection practices in all areas such as business offices, government buildings, and many other spaces. Ken explains that a major aspect of starting a cleaning business is having a business owner's mindset. Communication developed interpersonal skills, and networking are all important skills to have when creating or managing a business as it determines the pull a business has in its area. Ken explains that on the Smart Cleaning School Podcast, he gives an overview of the business aspects of starting a business, specifically in Episode 260, Best Of - How to Start a Solo Cleaning Business. Ken works primarily with two different groups of entrepreneurs. The first group is solo entrepreneurs that would like a part-time side hustle or a way to get out of their current job. The second group is residential or commercial companies that are growing into larger businesses. The Smart Cleaning Tribe is a group that is designed to help individuals set and achieve goals as well as hold them accountable. Key Points from the Episode: Ken's impact in the world The impact of Covid on business owners Fundamentals for starting a cleaning business Ken's Clientele The Smart Cleaning Tribe About Ken Carfagno: Ken Carfagno is the host of the Smart Cleaning School Podcast which helps cleaning professionals make the impact they were meant to make. Ken levels up cleaning business owners in growth mindset, leadership, and promotes the thought leaders in the cleaning industry through this podcast. Hour 1 of The Dawn Stensland Show: Councilmember Helen Gym has introduced legislation that would create a new, independent board to oversee the management of Philadelphia prisons. The United States Supreme Court has ruled that a public-school football coach does, in fact, have a right to publicly pray after each game. In Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, the court reached a 6 to 3 decision—with Justices Kagan, Breyer, and Sotomayor dissenting. Following the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which upended Roe v. Wade, people across the country protested—Philadelphia was no exception. Thankfully, protests in the area remained peaceful. During a press conference in Trenton, Governor Phil Murphy claimed that the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs demonstrated that the court did not value women or their ability to make decisions. He vowed to expand access to “reproductive freedom” throughout New Jersey. President Joe Biden responded to the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs, calling it a “sad day” for the country and for the court. He claimed the health of women across the country is now at risk. During a protest outside of the Supreme Court, Rep. Maxine Waters said that she will defy the court. Meanwhile, while appearing on ABC, Elizabeth Warren explicitly stated that she would like to see President Biden add additional justices to the court. And Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated that “people will die” as a result of Roe v. Wade's repeal. While speaking with CNN's Jake Tapper, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson refused to criticize the United States—despite Tapper proclaiming U.S. institutions are now routinely failing. Instead, P.M. Johnson proclaimed that America remains the “greatest global guarantor of democracy and freedom.”

I shared this episode as a personal C3 business update and hopefully serve as a teaching lesson on how to incorporate core values into your company. I never imagined that this podcast would become a keystone piece in our C3 Team hiring process. Shortly after the original release of this episode, C3 added 6 new locations totalling $4,000 per month in new revenue just 2 months left before the Carfagno Family left for Florida. How would we find amazing people to fill the C3 Team spots? That was a question that Coach Josh and Ken talked about a lot. In the end, we decided to use this podcast episode to my advantage. Make it a required listen in the hiring process to even qualify for an interview. It worked so well. Here's what I've discovered. I put my mission, vision, and values out there to such a level in this episode that C3 prospects either wanted to be a part of the team or wanted nothing to do with us. There weren't any luke warm candidates. Thus, this podcast has served as a tool to filter the right people in and wrong ones out. What does that mean? This podcast shares our team culture and the right ones are attracted like a magnet. The wrong ones are repelled. Needless to say, this episode is the most downloaded of 2021/2022 in the Philadelphia Area. My hope is that you'll get an idea from this episode on how you could incorporate a podcast, video, or even a blog on your website to serve the same purpose. If you're interested in our C3 Experience and want to check us out. Our website is www.C3xNow.com. We are professionals that clean professional spaces with ownership, excellence, and safety.

In "Building My New Cleaning Network I", I shared my marketing strategy from the summer of 2018 after moving back to the Philadelphia Area. I was scrappy and willing to knock on doors to say, "Hi, my name is Ken Carfagno." My friend Kevin Lacombe did the same thing in his new solo cleaning business when I was coaching him in late 2018. I knocked on 13 doors in the same town where my first new office was located. It worked! I had a few interested companies and one hired me! We then moved our family to another part of the suburbs and wanted to attract new clients. I followed the same strategy of knocking on doors, except I added a personalized piece to my information drop-offs and follow up process that I got from my friend Gustavo Fernandez. He showed me a few ways to stand out and I implemented them. In the month of May 2019, I knocked on 25 doors and generated a few interested prospects. Again, one hired me. I would have continued this guerilla marketing approach each month to add one new customer each month. But it didn't sit right with me. I realized that I needed to serve the community and create a name for myself. Thus, I poured into my newest customer and became friends with his family. We started meeting for breakfast to connect, pray, and mastermind together. That's Mr. Dennis Gehman of Gehman Design Remodeling in Harleysville, PA. I've mentioned his name a dozen times on this podcast because he was that much of a help to me! We still meet for breakfast to connect, pray, and mastermind. This process taught me a huge lesson. I wanted to change my approach from cold door-knocking to attracting warm leads. The only way to do that was through service. Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website
This episode was recorded in October 2019 as I launched my new cleaning business in the Philadelphia Area. We are so accustomed to turning on the faucet and immediately getting water. But that's not how it worked for our early settlers. They had to dig water wells and later, water pumps. They had to put in the work first to build the system for obtaining water. That's what this Best-Of illustrates. I had to prime the pump or dig the well. It's called building your network. Your network is your net worth. This episode and the next are meant to bring you back to the foundation of my current 6-figure commercial cleaning business that just allowed my family to go to Florida for a month! Pay attention to the seeds and small decisions I made to dig my water well. After these two Best-Of episodes, I'll share an update episode to show how the seeds from this 2019 work turned into a harvest in 2020 and 2021.
The Tests and the Rest podcast has always focused in part on celebrating and supporting amazing test prep professionals. Why, then, are we ending our successful run of professional development summits? We invited educator Dan Ascher to join us for a discussion of the history and future of the Tests and the Rest Summits. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What initiated the first Tests and the Rest conference? What was the immediate and long-term impact of the Boca Raton TATR conference? How did the global pandemic influence these test prep events? Why are the summits moving from Tests and the Rest to the NTPA? Is there still a need for professional development programs like the TATR summits? MEET OUR GUEST Daniel Ascher, M.Ed., President of A+ Test Prep and Tutoring, has been a professional educator since 1988. Dan began tutoring students while in graduate school and enjoyed one-to-one instruction so much that he decided to go directly into the field upon completing his Master's degree. In 1992, he started A+ Test Prep and Tutoring out of his home. In 2022, A+ is celebrating its 30th Anniversary! The company currently employs 35 tutors who work out of two office locations, at students' homes and schools throughout the Philadelphia Area, and online. A+ specializes in one-to-one instruction for SAT and ACT test preparation. In addition, they provide Executive Function coaching and instruction in all school subjects. Last but certainly not least, Richard Massi the President and Co-Founder of Fight On Makenna Foundation will tell us about the 2021 Bite for the Fight Food Festival happening on Saturday, September 25th. The Fight on Makenna Foundation was created in the memory of his 14 year old daughter Makenna who lost her battle with leukemia in September 2018. The Fight on Makenna Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life for kids and families facing pediatric cancer. In their two short years of existence, they have raised over $200K to help fund programs in partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to help kids and families as they deal with the rigors of cancer treatments. Makenna was a foodie (mostly carnivore) and loved friends, family, the Food Network, and the Philadelphia Eagles. So they created Bite for the Fight to showcase some of the best food, beer, wine, and spirits in the Philadelphia Area. Makenna was a fighter to the end of her short life and they brought that competitive spirit to the festival by allowing the restaurants to compete for the honor of the Best Bite voted on by the patrons of the festival. The 2019 event was even attended by Chef Robert Irvine. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! Investing in a coach that brings clarity to our business can be life-changing. What role does building systems play in bringing clarity to our business? How does knowing the financial goals of our team members help our business grow? Why shouldn’t we make others do the things we never did in our business? In this episode, Guillermo and Danielle Salas talk about how coaching impacted their business and the lessons they learned along the way. You have to be willing to do the things that you are asking for people. -Guillermo Salas 3 Things We Learned From This Episode Focus on what you are good at (10:00-11:00) Real estate agents aren’t meant to be jacks-of-all-trades. Some of us enjoy working behind the curtains, while others enjoy working with people. The roles in a real estate team are so diverse there is something for almost every personality type. Focus on what you’re good at. Otherwise, your talents will be wasted. Accountability is a must (12:30-14:24) Agents need to be held accountable. But a lack of accountability doesn’t necessarily happen because our team is lazy. It’s human nature to drift, and it’s our job as team leaders to keep our agents on the right track. It’s also our job to identify which employees aren’t a good fit for our team culture and let them go. They might be better off working in a place that suits their personality and skill set. Each team member has a goal to reach (20:00- 21:13) When our team reaches its goals, we reach ours as well. Have a discussion with each agent individually about how much money they want to make and how you can help them get there. As team leaders, it’s our responsibility to support our team with the right tools and advice. We can’t lead the way if we have no experience in what we want our agents to do. We need to have experienced what our agents are going through before we ask anything from them. This could be a new lead generation system or a new marketing approach. We should experiment with it ourselves, learn how it works, and understand the challenges. If we don’t, how can we advise our employees on the best practices? Guest Bio- Danielle and Guillermo Salas are the founders of the Salas team, where they focus on residential & commercial sales, leases, and rentals. Together they run one of the top producing teams in Philadelphia, and in the last year they had over $40 million in sales volume. You can find more about their team here.
