Two spring semesters ago, during the early stages of the Covid pandemic, Onondaga Community College made a seismic student-focused shift in its structure. All of the degree and certificate programs were organized into eight distinct Schools within OCC. The goal was to give students in like-minded courses of study a home on campus where they could go for assistance with almost anything. Each School was staffed with a Support Team which included a Professional Advisor, a Success Coach, a Faculty School Specialist, a Career & Transfer Specialist, and a Secretary. Some of those who worked hardest on the transition at OCC will be sharing their success story with higher education colleagues next month when they present at the SUNY Student Success Summit. Representing OCC will be Jenna Alexander, Director of the Student Advising and Coaching Network; Professor Justin Fiene, Faculty School Specialist in the School of Math, Science & Engineering; Sherrie Asbie-White, Assistant Director of Advising in the Student Coach & Advising Network; and Abigail Klein, Professional Advisor in our School of Computing and Applied Technologies. Naomi Stewart, who is the Assistant Director of Coaching & Support Services, will be presenting OCC's Schools success story at the American Association of Community Colleges conference.Student Eli Hunt is a huge fan of the Schools structure. He graduated from Cazenovia High School in 2020, took a gap year, and was introduced to OCC during the 2021 Seize Your Summer program. That's where he first met Professor Fiene. "He was super encouraging describing the atmosphere of the campus and the staff." His positive interactions continued with Dean Tzivanis, his Advisor in the School of Math, Science & Engineering. "I originally came with the idea of a Chemistry major but he helped me switch to a more engineering-focused path. He knew exactly what he was talking about, helped me set up my schedule, and gave me great advice." Hunt also enjoys the atmosphere with his School's main office in Ferrante Hall. "Their door is always open. It's very welcoming. You come in and they all know your name."The story of OCC's transition to Schools is the subject of this edition of our podcast, "Chatting About College." We're discussing the change and how it has benefitted students with Alexander and Fiene.
Investing in the stock market can be a roller coaster ride. You're happy when the markets are up and you're sad when the markets are down. It's easy to get caught up in our emotions when it comes to investing. In this episode of the WealthSmarts Podcast, Richard and Matt talk about how a professional advisor can help us stay mindful of our emotional responses. This involves making smarter investment decisions based on data, not emotion. Studies have shown that investors who work with a professional advisor achieve better investment returns than those who don't. For the purpose of this conversation, we will be referring to DALBAR's Quantitative Analysis of Investor Behavior and the Vanguard Advisor's Alpha study.
How do you respond to difficult feedback? Our first instinct is to defend ourselves or our organization, but that only amplifies the frustration of the person who feels wronged. So, how do we change the way we field criticism and complaints? What does it look like to offer a meaningful apology? And how do we work through the process of forgiving ourselves and others? In this episode of Noble Mind, Dorothy Armstrong joins Kate and Alex to explain how she thinks about forgiveness and discuss the myth that forgiving requires us to forget. She describes how our amygdala is hijacked when we feel wronged and offers strategies for helping a person move out of fight-or-flight by giving them the space to tell their story and offering a meaningful apology. Listen in for Dorothy's insight on the five As of responding to difficult feedback and learn how to reframe criticism as an opportunity to listen, learn and change. Dorothy Armstrong serves as Professional Advisor to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman and Director of DA Professional, an organization that supports individuals, teams and organizations to enhance communication, leadership and wellbeing. Dorothy regularly presents seminars on the power of apology and learning from feedback, and she leads a Complaints Coaching Program for people in public facing or leadership roles. Dorothy is also a Registered Nurse and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2010.

What didn't go so well and learnings, where he discusses Shoe Zone (SHOE). Finally, he outlines the investing case for DX Group (DX.), which is his pick for 2020. Full of wonderful analogies and humour, alongside some tremendous pearls of wisdom. Stephen joins Stellar Asset Management - 00:39 Stellar's performance to end November 2020, (which has gone up since!) – 01:23 What's gone well: Volex (VLX) - 02:26 What didn't go so well, and what did you learn from that: Shoe Zone (SHOE) – 08:55 Top pick for 2021: DX Group (DX.) - 12:00 Previous piworld videos with Stephen English. About Stephen English Stephen is Investment Director at Stellar Asset Management. He joined Stellar in September 2020, having previously worked at Blankstone Sington since 2002, where an early grounding on the dealing desk paved the way for a fascination with markets, how the ‘invisible hand' of supply and demand could move prices and how efficient dealing can add value. With a background in art (good drawer/awful painter) and an interest in psychology Stephen believes that small-cap investment is more art than science. An avid student of the market, he has authored his own 12-page investment philosophy which was well received by professional and retail readers alike. When it comes to the stockmarket, Stephen says ‘when you find the key, they change the lock' which drives a zeal for continual improvement. Never one for fads, increasingly he feels the Qualitative aspects of investment will be a key driver of alpha, where anything Quantitative and that can be automated will be. Quality investing to Stephen is as much, if not more so, about the management of a business, and he aligns the portfolios to founders who maintain the owners' eye and have a superior problem solving ability over peers with no alignment of interest. A strong culture is vital; after all ‘character is destiny'. Stephen also likes an aphorism or two! With a fast-growing reputation as an independent thinker, his musings are regularly featured in the press, including What Investment, Professional Advisor and MoneyWeek. Investment is one of the purest and most rewarding endeavours in Stephen's opinion and he is a firm believer in giving back to an industry he is so passionate about. With an irreverent style yet with deep thoughtfulness and humility. Stephen is a CFA Charterholder, a devoted Warrington Rugby League fan and a wide-ranging reader. Link to Stellar Asset Management.
Can you DIY your personal finances? By now, most of us are familiar with the term DIY or “do-it-yourself”. The idea behind DIY is essentially that anyone can figure out how to do something by spending a few hours on YouTube or on the internet. We make our own home improvements, fill out our own taxes, and make our own car repairs. But what about the more complex situations? What if your home needed a serious paint job? What if your car needed to have its' tires replaced? There are some situations in which we could DIY our own projects, but the key difference comes down to the time and process involved in doing so. The same goes for your financial life and planning your financial future. You can certainly do it yourself or, you can consult a certified financial professional. The outcomes may be similar but again, it comes down to the time and process involved. In this BenchTalk, we are going to help you decide whether you can DIY your finances or if you would be better served speaking with a financial professional. How A Financial Planner Can HelpOne thing we do know for sure is that money is a necessity in our lives. Money helps us pay for where we live and put food on our table. For some, money is the end all be all and means everything to them. Others view money only as a means to accomplish other goals. It's a wide spectrum and wherever you happen to fall on that spectrum one thing's for sure, it's incredibly important to plan your finances and be responsible for your money. This is where a financial planner can be invaluable. Financial planners help the client understand their situation, establish goals for the short-term and long-term, and develop and implement a plan to make sure they arrive where they need to be financially. Sure, you can DIY your finances by following the same basic formula. However, for most, it all boils down to three key components: time, ability, and desire. How to DIY Your Finances: Time, Ability & DesireThese three things are absolutely necessary to DIY your financial future. If you have the time, the ability, and desire to DIY your finances then you are on the right track. But if you are lacking in even one of these areas, it might be time to consult a financial advisor. If you decide that you might need a financial advisor's help, we encourage you to reach out. As always, we provide 100% independent and objective financial planning.

It is Action Step 9 in our 10 action steps to Financial Freedom. Action Step 9 is to maximize their Retirement Savings and Investments up to 25 times their expenses. There have been many examples that if you have 25 times your expenses and take out a 4% withdrawal a year it could last them the rest of their lives. Check with your Professional Advisor on what the maximum is that you can Invest this year in your 401K and IRA. Investopedia said “if you have both a Roth 401(k) plan and a Roth IRA, your total annual contribution for all accounts in 2020 has a combined limit of $25,500 ($19,500 Roth 401(k) contribution + $6,000 Roth IRA contribution) or $33,000 if you are 50 or older ($19,500 Roth 401(k) contribution + $6,500 catch-up contribution + $6,000 Roth IRA contribution + $1,000 catch-up contribution).” For you fact checkers you can see the link in the below show notes.
