See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode of The Mac & Forth Show Podcast Alan, Dean, and Karl are at it again, dissecting the latest from the Apple universe with a twist of humour. They kick things off with a look at Apple's latest iMessage security upgrade, which they assure is so secure, even your nosy neighbour can't sneak a peek. Next, they delve into the drama of Apple blaming new EU laws for the wonkiness of Progressive Web Apps. The team then navigates the murky waters of Meta and Microsoft's unhappiness about Apple's new app store terms. They're also dazzled by the Apple Vision Pro's support for a rare film aspect ratio, suggesting it could make even your home videos look like cinematic masterpieces. Finally, they're all ears about a luxury airline doling out Apple Vision Pro to select passengers, imagining a flight experience so immersive, that you'll forget about the cramped legroom. There's a lot to consider before committing to a framework to build a native app. If you choose to build in native, ask yourself whether you're prepared to handle the downsides that come with it.   To start, you're limited to one framework and writing in one programming language. If you're not familiar with the syntax, that could pose a major learning curve. With native apps, it's tempting to have a separate app for every device that a user might run your app on, but on the operations front, that's a slippery slope with high overhead costs. If you're on a tight budget or working on small teams like Chuck and Robbie, the cost of paying developers to maintain a bunch of apps isn't appealing. There's no shame in knowing your resource limitations and taking the easy route.  In this episode, Chuck and Robbie talk about the trade-off between building native apps in Swift, Objective-C, React Native, and other web technologies, why they enjoy progressive web apps, and Disney's monopoly in media.  Key Takeaways [02:21] - A whiskey Review - Four Roses Small Batch Select. Along the way, we discuss some of the difficulties in creating cross-platform UI-based applications, and some of the things that Flatpack, AppImage, and Snap are trying to solve on the Linux desktop. You'd have to build the app, submit it to Apple and Google, and then have them approve it to put it on their store.” [1:37] “By going the web app route, we were able to have half the amount of developers in the early days and focus all our time on building one app versus two apps.” [4:34] “I think that's what gave us kind of a competitive edge, having that platform where we could build one app that goes to iOS, Android and web.” [7:49] “Overall, I think that all apps that don't need intensive power are going to start going the web app route, if they haven't already.” [9:27] “Our clients keep it easy for us.
