In this week's episode, McKay discusses the importance of an abundance mindset. He opens the podcast by discussing Britney Bowe's Olympic history and her decision to give up her spot in the 2022 Olympic trials to Erin Jackson. This selfless act hardly granted Bowe a medal, but it led Jackson to win gold in the women's 500 m speed skating event. Christensen argues that this is a prime example of abundance thinking and grace. Because humans tend to resent and envy the success of others, especially those in close proximity, Christensen urges the audience to replace envy and resentment with grace. He then goes on to detail another Olympic tale between Mikaela Shiffrin and Sophia Goggia. After Shiffrin practiced with Goggia's skis and got her fastest time, Goggia gave Shiffrin her skis before an event in the hopes that she might be as successful in the competition as she was in practice. The story exemplifies how abundance and grace can transform our attitudes and help others in a positive way. In contrast, McKay then tells the audience about the tense relationship between Thomas Edison and his once student, Nikola Tesla. When Edison dismissed and admonished Tesla for one of his suggestions, Tesla quit and decided to patent his own ideas. He eventually received the notoriety he deserved and was tasked with engineering Chicago's famous World Fair instead of Thomas Edison. McKay segues into the episode's conclusion where he discusses the inherent value of personal worth and security that comes from an abundant mindset. He closes out the podcast with a quick anecdote about Jesse Owens and Luz Long's friendship that blossomed from the 1936 Olympic Games. Long is rumored to have given Owens advice before his gold medal run, despite being Owens' opposition. While Owens came out on top, the pair developed a lifelong friendship in the face of a disapproving Nazi Germany. Long story short, McKay advises that if we truly believe that there is enough success and happiness to go round, prosperity will come. The Finer Details of This Episode:The story of Britney Bowe giving up her spot so that Erin Jackson could win GoldThe importance of rejoicing in others' victoriesWhat abundant thinking isWhy we resent others' successMen envy occupational success; women envy physical attractivenessWhy we envy close friends moreHow to replace envy with graceSophia Goggia gifting Mikaela Shiffrin her skis for an eventEdison's scarcity mentality and how he devalued Tesla's ideasThe inherent value of personal worth and securityThe friendship between Jesse Owens and Luz LongQuotes: “Every day, in most things we do, we have a choice. We can see things as scarce, like the chances to win a race at the Olympics and decide not to help or cheer others on, or we can see things as abundant—that there is more than enough for everyone.”“I believe one of the most powerful characteristics you can develop in life, one that will reward you for years to come, is to rejoice in the other person's victory.”“It's common that our reaction to other people's success isn't always positive. We tend to draw comparisons between what we have and what we perceive others are having—our thoughts get distorted and what they have grows in our minds and what we have shrinks at the same time.”“In one survey, more than 74% of respondents reported experiencing major envy recently in their lives. Surprisingly, researchers found that we most often envy others of our own gender.”“When you take envy out of your heart, it needs to be replaced with something, otherwise the void will be filled with envy again. So your organization failed a compliance audit and got slapped with fines and penalties. Bummer! You pay the fine, spend a few days fixing your configurations, run a scan, and get ready to do it again come the next audit. But that approach doesn't work anymore: The risks are too high, and fixing months of configuration drift at the drop of a hat (let alone hunting down all the paperwork for auditors) certainly isn't your team's favorite thing to do.Demo Puppet Comply + CEM for cross-department visibility and automated complianceThe broad scope of today's compliance management requires a coordinated effort from more than just the security team. Political scientist Ethan Scheiner appeared on Chatter in early 2022, right before the Olympics in Beijing, to talk about the fascinating intersection of politics, security, and Olympic events. This week, he returns to talk about the compelling connections between hockey and international relations--with a special focus on Czechoslovakia before, during, and after the Cold War. His new book, Freedom To Win, uses the stories of a range of larger-than-life characters across several decades to describe the importance of international hockey play to the Czech and Slovak national experience and to increase awareness of a too-little-known quest for freedom from oppression.David Priess and Scheiner discussed the broad intersection of hockey and politics, the intensity of the Swedish-Finnish rivalry on the ice, the origins of the game in Europe, how Czechoslovakian hockey players used their sport to fight back against Soviet domination, the 1969 Ice Hockey World Championships in Stockholm, prominent sports figures' defections from the Warsaw Pact countries during the Cold War, the internationalization of the US National Hockey League, hockey in the former Czechoslovakia after the end of Communist rule in Eastern Europe, and more.Among the works mentioned in this episode:The Chatter episode The Olympics, Politics, and SecurityThe book Freedom to Win: A Cold War Story of the Courageous Hockey Team that Fought the Soviets for the Soul of its People--and Olympic Gold, by Ethan ScheinerChatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo. Hi everyone, in our latest episode I have Conor D'Arcy Head of Research and Policy at the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute joining me. They have recently published a report about their findings into how insurance and mental health are mixing together.Titled the ‘Written Off? report the institute have highlighted where things are not necessarily working well for consumers that are wanting to get insurance, when they have a mental health condition. The key takeaways:They found that someone with mental health can potentially pay up to 27x the base premium for travel insurance3 in 10 respondents did not disclose their mental health condition to insurersThe inability to get insurance at an affordable price can further exacerbate mental health symptoms and lead to a lack of financial securityThe protection insurance industry has made significant improvements in terms of mental health underwriting over the years. I have personally experienced this from when I first took out my insurances in 2010, compared to my applications in the last few years and even recently. But, the research shows that there is still a lot of distrust in the insurance world over how decisions are made and the fairness of decisions. I know many underwriters that make incredibly fair decisions of protection insurance applications detailing mental health. It's our job to make sure that we are getting the message out to the public and organisations like the MMHPI about the good work that is being done. There may not always be solutions that all parties are happy with, but open and transparent discussions are key to us changing the way that the insurance sector is viewed.Next time I will we will have Charlotte Rogers joining us, she is an adviser that is incredibly passionate about Trusts and making sure people know what can go wrong if they're not in place. Tune in to hear her personal story and how it's made her determined to have Trusts as a key part part of her advice.Remember, if you are listening to this as part of your work, you can claim a CPD certificate on our website, thanks to our sponsors Octo Members. If you want to know more about how to arrange protection insurance, take a look at my 13 hour CPD Protection Insurance in Practice course here and 1 hour CPD Protection Competency Exam here.

Welcome to the month of April, National Financial Literacy Month and throughout this month I will be producing podcasts to assist listeners in better understanding the importance of being financially literate. This is not all, budgeting can help you offset the inflationary cycle we are in.Here is what budgeting is all about and the assumption that everyone knows what budgeting is all about is not true. Here are just a few things to consider as you budget your money and work to navigate inflation. What is a budget?A finance plan that allocates future personal income toward expenses, savings, and debt repaymentBenefits of Budgeting:•Gives you control over your money•Keeps you focused on your financial goals•Helps you stay aware of where your money goes•Helps you save for expected and unexpected costs•Clarifies areas where you can save moneyThree main components of a budget:IncomeExpensesSavingsWhere to start developing a budget•Understand your money and how you spend it•Make tough decisions about spending priorities•Budget with a lifestyle in mind•Build a budget that allows you to saveBudgeting with a lifestyle in mindClarify the life aspects you give priority, and then split them into 3 areas:•Items that create meaning and bring you joy•Things you want, but that can wait•Things you would like to have, but aren't essentialThings to remember about budgeting•Make sure your list reflects your priorities•You can always adjust your goals as your priorities change•Budgeting takes time, patience, and effort•If your first attempts don't go as planned, don't give up•Look for ways to make tracking spending easier – like mobile appsWhat happens if you don't budget•Overspending•Falling into a debt cycle•Limited spending power•Limited savings and investments•Lack of future securityThe bottom line•Budgeting is about saving money•Better budgeting helps you end up with more money to manage•An accurate budget brings discipline and order to your finances•Use your budget to guide important decisions•Earning more than you spend is the way to a low-stress, comfortable life! When you embrace and take a consistent and committed approach to budgeting you can offset inflation. How? Change your mindset and relationship with money. For example, instead of purchasing gas at any gas station, comparison shop for the best places to purchase gas. When it comes to purchasing food, you can also compare different grocery stores to get the best value for your money.Pay off credit card debt, interest rates are going to be increased six more times in 2022, per the Federal Reserve, so become debt-free and save money in the process. Lastly, the best way to navigate inflation is to develop a spending plan and stick to it.Discover more about Paul's virtual Financial Fitness course at this link, it is being offered at a 50% discount throughout the month of April, learn more about it at this link: https://bit.ly/3dbperG
I bet you have a number you want to make each month. Maybe it's the holy grail of making six figures. Or maybe it's the amount of cash you want to have in your bank account. We all have some number in our heads that we think, "When I have that amount, when I'm making that much money, then I will feel safe. I will feel secure and stable and I can breathe in my business."When we first started in 2011, $10,000 a month was our holy grail number.I felt like if I could get to that level, everything would feel solid and I would feel okay. And I hustled to get there. We opened for business in March, I started networking in June, pounding the pavement meeting everyone I possibly could, and by August 2011, we hit our first $10,000 month. And it felt like such a sweet victory to have made it there. The problem was, that was now my benchmark. The months after that when I didn't hit $10,000, I felt like a failure. And it didn't get rid of my stress, because I had to hustle for that money every month. After many years in business, many nights stressing about money, and lots of personal work to shift how I felt about that security I was chasing, I have come to a very different conclusion about what it means to feel financially secure. What I've realized is that it's not about how much money you're making in a month or in a year, or even how much money you have in the bank. None of those things is going to make you feel secure if you don't know how to generate money. So let's talk about how to do that so you can be financially secure and financially free.Tune into this episode to hear:What bartending taught me about financial securityThe pieces your business needs in place so you can feel confident about generating incomeWhy reinvesting in your business and building your skills will lead to more money in the bank than when you're saving small amountsLearn more about Pia: No BS Agency Owners Free Facebook GroupThe Show Your Business Who's Boss Crash Course Start reading the first chapter of my bookPiasilva.comResources:$100M Offers: How To Make Offers So Good People Feel Stupid Saying No, Alex Hormozi
