Imagine being a candidate to become a new Head of School! What would that be like? If you are a veteran international educator, you have most likely either participated in or witnessed your school finding a new Head of School. If you are going global for the first time, you might wonder how international schools are structured administratively — and if you make it through the first rounds of interviews, you will likely meet with the Head of School, sometimes called the Director or the Superintendent. And if you listened to our interview with Dr. Brent Mutsch, you learned how schools search for a new superintendent. After talking with Brent, we were curious about the Head of School recruiting process from a candidate's perspective. Fortunately, we knew of an old friend from our Saudi days who had gone through the process a few times and had just completed it again to accept a new position as a Head of School in Harare, Zimbabwe. Our friend, Dr. Gregory Moncada, joined us in this episode to trace his recruiting game plan from start to finish. We caught up with Greg as he finalized his packing in the week before getting on the plane to head to Zimbabwe.Dr. Moncada is the Head of School for the Harare International School (HIS) in Zimbabwe. He was previously the founding director of the Qatar Academy for Science and Technology (QAST), the Qatar Foundation's new STEM school. Prior to HIS and QAST, Dr. Moncada started new schools and programs throughout his career, including a progressive middle school based on the 'This We Believe' model and district-wide STEM programs at all grade levels. He specializes in developing student-centered learning models, progressive learning models, and multiverse organizational structures between schools and organizations. With more than 30 years of experience, Greg has held teaching and leadership positions in International schools in Spain, Austria, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United States. Greg holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Minnesota. Our guiding question was, “What is it like to be a candidate going through a Head of School search?”Greg shared his strategies: deep research, lots of self-reflection, working with a recruiting agency, and engaging with the leader of the Search Committee to learn about the school and community. He also told us what happens when a candidate is a finalist and what a school visit is like.Don't forget to listen to our other interview with Greg, in which he offers sage advice and describes his experiences in becoming an administrator. After a comprehensive year-long search, The NAMM Executive Committee and CEO Search Committee is pleased to announce industry veteran and music education advocate John Mlynczak is the new President and CEO of The National Association of Music Merchants. The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) has been around for the past 122 years). Simply put, if NAMM wasn't doing it, you would notice, but at the same time, you don't see NAMM helping the music manufacturing industry evolve and grow. With that, comes new membership opportunities, that not only include manufactures and retailers, but now provides an aspect that fits within the individual that works within the music business. John Mlynczak is now only the 4th CEO of the organization in the past 77 years. With that, he's had his hands full in addition to running the organization, but also rebooting the annual trade shows since Covid hit in 2020. The Global Pandemic simply shut down the Winter NAMM Show in January 2021 in Anaheim CA, along with the annual Summer show in Nashville TN. Since the reopening of public gatherings, the folks at NAMM have now worked to host three Winter NAMM Shows over an 18 month period. The most recent show had 50,000+ attendees visit the convention, and with 120 Countries being represented (and with 30% of attendees being international), it's still the largest global gathering of the music industry. John and his team are working to continue to build the brand that NAMM is known for, creating exciting trade shows, along with helping the music industry evolve into the 21st Century. CBS Sports Radio food fight l News Brief l Who should the Lakers hire to be their next head coach?
Last night's meeting began with an update on the investigation that has been ongoing at the Mission Hill School. After a year long investigation by the law firm Hinckley Allen, the firm found that– as detailed by the Boston Globe– that “the school endangered and failed children for years by overlooking allegations of sexual abuse and bullying and neglecting students with disabilities”. This is the 5th report in 7 years detailing these incidents. The Superintendent recommended at the end of the report to close the school at the end of the year. There will be a vote by the school committee next Thursday, May 5th to address this recommendation. Numerous public commenters spoke about this report, with others commenting on other issues such as the BTU contract committing to help fend against homelessness amongst students, expanding the P.A. Shaw and the future of the Horace Mann School for the Deaf. The only other report of the meeting was an update on the Superintendent Search, given by Dr. Pam Eddinger, one of the Search Committee chairs. Dr. Eddinger gave an update on the timeline for interviewing candidates and on the public engagement process, however School Committee members expressed concern on the timing of the process and noted the need to have a plan for an interim Superintendent if the search does not conclude by the time Dr. Casseslius's last day on June 30th. A special School Committee meeting will take place next Thursday, May 5th, to vote on closing the Mission Hill School. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Our guest tonight is Dr. Norm Hall, President of Simpson University. Over the course of my career, I've had the privilege of leading president searches for 35 colleges, universities, and seminaries. Simpson University was one of these. When the board retained us, Simpson was going through some difficult times. We knew it was going to take someone who was up for a huge challenge to be successful at Simpson. Amazingly, the search drew a very strong pool of candidates. There were three sitting presidents along with a couple of deans, and then there was Dr. Norm Hall, who had been Dean of Students earlier in his career, but at this time, was serving as the Vice President of International and Alumni Affairs at Greenville University. I was present for all of the interviews and I saw the Search Committee's response to each candidate. After Dr. Hall was interviewed, it was obvious that he was going to be a finalist—and a very strong finalist at that. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Dr. Hall as he discusses his journey to becoming the President of Simpson University. Thanks again for listening to Next Gen Nonprofit Leadership with Tommy Thomas and be sure to share this episode with the nonprofit board members and collegiate leadership members you know. And don't forget to leave us a review wherever you're listening. It really helps us! Enjoy! By Ed Shanaphy, CMAA As 2022 brings in a new breath of life to so many in our industry as we battle a virus, so too does the job market show even more signs of life and recovery. As we look to either expand club offerings or find a new, dynamic club manager or department head, we must consider the pathway to success. Far too often, it's been years since a governing club board has had to fill a major role. This usually means these governing bodies are out of practice in terms of communication and out of the practice of hiring. And in these times, finding candidates can be an a seemingly impossible task. As boards nominate search committees, and search committees nominate candidates and finalists, the pathway becomes cloudy. As a hiring force, search committees and hiring bodies should not only investigate the candidates thoroughly, but also look at the committee's own composition and desires and continually monitor that not one particular voice or objective becomes overbearing. The five mistakes that committees can often make when hiring all lead back to just that: Maintain an objective viewpoint and listen to all the voices as you narrow the field of candidates to just that one, special person who fits the job. Easier said than done! Have a listen and find out where your five major pitfalls might darkly lurk. Ed Shanaphy is President of BeyondTheBaselines.com which is a subsidiary of SBW Associates, Inc. With his experience in hiring internationally as Managing Director of two London-based conglomerates, he brings to the search committee a viewpoint gained from completing hundreds of searches for his own entities and, more recently, private members clubs.

In this episode, Jess and Sara talk about what it's like to serve on an academic search committee. To those of you who are about to serve on a committee (maybe for the first time), we will take you through the whole process from writing the call to making the offer. Or those of you on the market this year, peek behind the curtain. Every search is different! Things happen very differently from university to university, and even from search to search. We want this overview to give you, the search committee member, the permission to speak up and suggest changes from the way it may have been done before. Jim’s voicemail: You have seven unheard messages. Pam: [voicemail message for Jim] Hey, Jim. It’s Pam. I keep looking up to say something to you and then Michael’s there and it’s horrible. Anyway, I’m bored. Come back! We’ve been back in the annex beacuse somebody did something to Michael’s carpet. Now our voicemail is full so this week we’re answering listener questions! Join us as we recast the manager candidates from ’Search Committee’, list our favorite Office ‘car' moments, and brainstorm what was going be on the hip hop mix Michael promised to make for Darryl. We don’t know if you guys figured out who did that to Michael’s carpet yet, but we have a theory that involves an inter-departmental conspiracy. Everybody in the office. We need to talk. Support our show and become a member of Scott's Tots on Patreon! For only $5/month, Tots get exclusive access to our monthly Mailbag episodes (+ the video version!) where we casually pick through every single message/question/comment we receive. On top of that, a portion of all show proceeds are donated every month to organizations that help fund education opportunities for minority students. Help us accomplish the mission that Michael Scott could not.
Apparently, using the Internet to compile a list of potential coaching candidates is too difficult. Might as well have an outside committee do that for you.
