It is a true story from WWI, and happened on Christmas eve and Christmas day in 1914. There are numerous places where you can read about the real life event. There are even pictures, taken by soldiers who were there experiencing it. This is a heartwarming tale and I hope it fills your heart with hope. And that it will remind you that even in the darkest times, the light still shines!  God bless you all.  Resources mentioned in this episode: Get your copy of Shooting at the Stars here Read more about the Christmas truce of 1914 here See pictures and watch a video about the Christmas truce of 1914 here See James and Lilly's original coloring sheets here

CD 1668 Law or Love: It's Your ChoiceLet me ask you a question this morning. How do you want a relationship with God, by His “Law” or by His “Love”. How do you want God to judge you, by His “Law” or by His Love? And when I say by His “Love” I mean the grace He revealed through His Son dying on the cross in our place.I believe each and every one of us would say Lord I can't live Your “Law” but I accept Your “Love” that You demonstrated (Romans 5:8) through Your son Jesus. I don't want “Law”, I want “Love” meaning Your grace! Now hold that thought and let's read our text: *Text Galatians 3:1-14 (KJV) O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the “Law” , or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the “Law” , or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. 10 For as many as are of the works of the “Law”  are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the “Law”  to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the “Law”  in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the “Law”  is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the “Law” , being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.Note “Law” is mentioned 7 times in those 14 verses!Note verse 10 teached us if we don't live “by the hearing of faith” then we must live by all the “Law”! See James 2:10, which says, "For whosoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."This verse emphasizes the all-or-nothing nature of the “Law”. It's not enough to simply follow some of the commandments or do our best; if we break even one commandment, we are guilty of breaking the entire “Law”.This can seem like a daunting standard to live up to, but it's important to remember that Christ has already fulfilled the “Law” on our behalf, and we are no longer under its condemnation. Instead, we are called to live according to the Spirit “by the hearing of faith”, seeking to honor God in all that we do! *SEE Galatians 5:13-15 (KJV) For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by “Love”  serve one another. 14 For all the “Law” is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt “Love”  thy neighbour as thyself. 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us about Him sitting on His throne with His sheep on His right hand and He makes this statement:*Matthew 25:37-40 (KJV) Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsSupport the show

There's a reason the rearview mirror is smaller than the windshield. We must glance back occasionally to move forward effectively. By paying attention to the good things God is doing day-to-day, we're positioned to receive His wisdom and live out His design for us. This week, we are looking back so we can look forward with clarity and purpose! As we dive into the wisdom of King Solomon, we'll see God's faithfulness and discover the opportunities ahead. Embracing God's wisdom makes us stronger and better prepared for the journey forward.  Proverbs 4:7 - “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.” See Ecclesiastes 7:19 Join Pastor Nick Tallo as we continue in the book of Ecclesiastes where King Solomon writes on timeless wisdom; what is it, where do we get it from, and how we know we have it. WISDOM IS LIVING LIFE BY GOD'S DESIGN We live in an informational era. We have more information than any other generation to date.So what does wisdom look like? Knowledge coupled with action! Jesus teaches about building on the rock or sand and putting it into practice. The result is how you are living your life out. See James 3:13, Matthew 7:24, Ecclesiastes 7:20-22, James 1:5, Proverbs 2: 3-4,6 GODLY WISDOM STARTS WITH AND CONTINUES IN HUMILITY BEFORE GODThe fear of the Lord leads us to a heart posture of humility. We must be quiet enough and humble enough to receive God's answers. It is knowing God is on the throne and we are not; that we are not who we used to be but not yet who we want to be.See Proverbs 1:7, Matthew 7:24, James 3:17, James 1:22, 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, Colossians 2:1-32Rivers Church in O'Fallon, MO, exists to help people become passionate followers of Jesus.LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE for more content that will help you live equipped and become a passionate follower of Jesus! Resources mentioned during the sermon:●     Find the Ecclesiastes Reading Plan here: https://mailchi.mp/2riverschurch/3aao9vtsci●      Get our app and sermon notes, resources, and more! https://onelink.to/2rivers     Are you struggling and need prayer? This week we want to work through the issue of gossip. We will be using Resisting Gossip: Winning the War of the Wagging Tongue by Matthew Mitchell as a guide.▪ Resisting Gossip – Part 2: Resisting Gossip (chapters 4-6)Sinful gossip includes the sin of judging others▪ See James 4:11-12 [slander means to speak against someone, to talk them down, to speak ill of them, to disdain someone or to run somebody down verbally; intent is to belittle another, to pour out contempt, to mock, to hurt, to harm, to destroy]▪ What are the issues in passing judgment?~ Rush to judgment- which involves: listening to only one side; not considering the source; assuming and assigning motives; and we assume the worst about someone~ Prideful judgment – it is not our place, calling, or responsibility; we don't judge how we would want to be judged; we aren't willing to humble ourselves~ Unloving judgment – critical judgment (lacks charity)Practicing Ephesians 4:29 – Applying the put off/put on principle to our use of our mouths1. Say nothing at all (Proverbs 10:19; 17:27-28)2. Commend the Commendable – say something good (“helpful for building others up”)3. Talk to people, not about them (Matthew 5:24) – this can mean loving confrontation4. Offer words of mercy – words should “minister grace to our hearers” (e.g., Proverbs 10:21)5. Talk to and about the Lord (Ephesians 5:19-20)Listening▪ Evil listening~ Proverbs 17:4~ Live as children of the light1. Pray and weigh (Use wisdom to ask discerning questions to know how to engage with the one gossiping)2. Avoid – Proverbs 20:193. Cover and defend– Proverbs 17:9; 10:12)4. 30 Simple Steps You Can Take Today to Be a Better Public Speaker

Stepping into the world of public speaking can be daunting. Whether you're a newbie feeling the jitters or a seasoned pro looking to fine-tune your skills, we've got thirty simple tips you can do today to immediately level up your public speaking game. From taming those butterflies in your stomach to perfecting your delivery style, these strategies are your secret to becoming a confident and charismatic speaker. Let's get ready to unleash your inner orator! 1. Pray before speaking. I pray something like this, “Lord, help me to speak the truth in love with wisdom such that knowledge is imparted that sticks to the soul spreads through the world for your glory.” See Ephesians 4:15; Titus 2:7-8. 2. Say something worth saying. Time is short, Psalm 90:12; Ephesians 5:16. 3. Study adequately. It is better to over-study (if there is such a thing) than understudy, especially in preaching. See James 3:1-2. 4. Never rely on your charisma. Rely on God and the knowledge you have to offer people. 5. Learn how to speak grammatically and with the best version of your voice you can offer. You may want to talk with a speech coach. 6. Have water with you on the podium, but don't take large gulps, but small sips. The water should be warm, not cold. Cold water constricts your throat and hurts your voice. Want to know the rest? The Rock Church of Fenton Women's Ministry

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob traveled through a land they did not fully possess and were content to be called strangers and exiles because they awaited something better. We, too, walk through a land that is not our home because Christ has granted us citizenship in heaven. Join us for session five as we discuss what it means to be strangers and exiles here on earth, how we are called to live as such, and how we await our eternal home. Verses Used:Hebrews 11:13-16Ephesians 2:1-6, 13, 191 John 2:15-17Matthew 5:14-162 Corinthians 4:16-18Discussion Questions:1. Why does the Bible call our spiritual ancestors strangers and exiles?  Some versions use the word “pilgrim.” What do these words mean? If you apply them to your spiritual life, what insight does that give you as to how we are called to live here on earth?2. The Bible clearly tells us we cannot have two masters. Though we desire to live for a heavenly kingdom, we are often distracted and preoccupied with things on earth.  What is the greatest earthly challenge to you in living for a heavenly kingdom?3. How does the Bible call us to live as citizens of heaven? (See 1 Peter 1:22-23, 2:11-17 & 1 Timothy 6:11-19). Which are the most challenging to you? Why are we called to live like this?4. What does the Bible say we must endure as we await our heavenly country? (See Acts 14:21-22) What are your honest thoughts about that?5. What are some reasons we may endure trial (See James 1:2-4 and 1 Peter 1:6-7 & 4:12) and how can we endure trial and tribulation well? What do we cling to in trial that gives us hope to endure? (See 1 Peter 1:13)

CD 1572 Becoming Conquerors by Colossians - session 13Sunday Morning July 23, 2023 - (Donnie's Birthday!)"WALKING & TALKING in WISDOM”We have spent the past few months in the Epistle learning from the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit how to live a life of victory! As He gets ready to close this letter he reminds us how much our words and works influence those around us! Jesus taught from the beginning that His purpose in our lives was to make us into “FISHERS of MEN” and to accomplish His highest level of call. If we live and die only to ourselves then we have missed out on His Will and Way! With that being said open your Bibles to our text:*Colossians 4:5-6 (KJV) “Walk” in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6 Let your “SPEECH” be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.#1 Note: “WALK” #2 Note: “SPEECH”#3 Note “WISDOM”#1 Note: “WALK” - figuratively to live and follow as a companion- in everyday life the Lord Jesus desires to direct our lives to His fullness!*Reread Colossians 4:5 (KJV) “Walk” in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.*Read Matthew 4:17-22 (KJV)  From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 18 And Jesus, “WALKING” by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. 21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.*Read Psalms 45:6-7 (KJV) (see Hebrews 1:8-9) Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. 7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above THY FELLOWS. (= COMPANIONS)#2 Note: “SPEECH” - (log-os) something said including the thought behind it.*Reread Colossians 4:6 (KJV) Let your “SPEECH” be alway with GRACE, SEASONED with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.“with grace” - divine influence upon the heart (see Ephesians 4:29) - How?“SEASONED” - to be prepared!"SALT" #217 (hal'-as) salt, figuratively prudence or being wise in life with preparation for the future!*Matthew 5:37 (KJV) But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.#3 Note “WISDOM”*Reread Colossians 4:5-6 (KJV) “Walk” in wisdom toward them that are without, REDEEMING the time. 6 Let your “SPEECH” be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.Note “WISDOM” - (sof-ee'-ah) CLEAR AND WISE.See James 3:13 (KJV)  Who is a “WISE” man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of “WISDOM”.Note our lifestyle of walking and talking in and by wisdom will REDEEM the times. When I was a new believer, I was deeply troubled by how other Christians treated me. Sad, I know, but I was a bit much for people in my early faith walk. I was an absolute mess and needed a lot of Jesus. However, over three decades later now, it seems that not much has changed in the Western Church. It is incredible how fast we can all fall into legalism or an abusive sense of entitlement clocked behind a veil of liberty. Peter writes, "For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. I love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. (1 Peter 2:15–17)Extremes in both legalism and licentious liberty are damaging to Gospel communities. Francis Schaeffer is known for saying that when our doctrine (what we teach) and practice (what we do) do not match, we have an "ugly orthodoxy." It is my hope that no one wants that. James writes, "But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:22–27) Do not overthink this. Our "works" are an expression of what we believe and a visible representation of our doctrine. (See James 2:22-24; Ephesians 2:10)So, if we seek God's favor, we must be doers of the Word. As we saw last week, "Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith. (1 Timothy 1:5, also see, Deuteronomy 6:4-7; Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:34–40; Luke 10:25–28; John 13:34–35; John 14:15)It deeply chaps my hide when someone misrepresents me to others. But imagine how God feels looking at His church today. To declare the love and God and acting outside of His divine love for the world (See John 3:16) is, at least hypocrisy, and is not conducive to the proclamation of the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Who wants to listen to a liar? This inconsistency confuses people who are seeking to know God. God loves and welcomes sinners with open arms, and so should we. Not only as individuals but even more as a Gospel community. This is what a Gospel Culture looks like. The lost are welcomed by those who have been found.References:Galatians 2:11–21Romans 15:7-----Call us: 208.524.4747prayer@watersprings.netOnline Giving: https://watersprings.net/give.phpServe at Watersprings: https://watersprings.churchcenter.com/people/forms/8221CCLI Streaming License: 20080252 Size ECCLI Copyright License: 1406906 Size FDISCLAIMER: Closed captioning and/or transcription is being provided solely for the convenience of our viewers. Psalm 49:5-12 - Wealth Cannot Prevent Death

Pastor Mike Impact Ministries

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2023 4:32

Remember yesterday I said that Psalm 49 is a sermon. It is a message warning us about the futility and vanity of thinking that wealth can buy you happiness or even life itself. Even Solomon, probably the wealthiest person who ever lived, found out that money and wealth and all the things it could purchase did not bring him satisfaction. He declared: “For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten. So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind” (Ecclesiastes 2:16-17). Especially today, we live in the age of the “rat race”. We live in a “Madison Avenue” culture driven by social media with an obsession to have things and be popular. Someone said it this way: “We buy things we do not need, with money we do not have, to impress people we don't even know or like”.  There are several lessons we should learn from Psalm 49. The first one is that wealth cannot prevent death (Psalm 49:5-12).  It isn't a sin to be wealthy if we acknowledge God as the Giver of everything we have. God was concerned Israel would forget Him after they became wealthy, and He reminded them in Deuteronomy 8:18: “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth…”.  God gives us wealth to help others and glorify His name (1 Tim. 6:7-19; Matt. 6:33). But an increase in wealth often leads to an increase in evil. It's good to have things that money can buy, if we don't lose the things money can't buy. It's sad when people start to confuse prices with values.   Jesus concluded a sermon on riches by saying, "For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God" (Luke 16:15). The psalmist feared that the wealthy in the land would start to take advantage of poorer people. It was easy for the rich to bribe judges and rob the poor of their rights. (See James 2:1-9; 5:1-6; Amos 4:1-3; 5:10-15.) Those who boast of their wealth have a false sense of security, because their wealth can't protect them from "the last enemy"—death (1 Cor. 15:26). Jesus had this truth in mind when He spoke about the rich farmer in Luke 12:13-21. If a relative was poor, a Jew could redeem him by paying his debts (Lev. 25:23ff), but if a relative was dying, no amount of money could come to the rescue—and to whom would you give the money? A murderer could not be redeemed (Num. 35:31), even if you could calculate the worth of a human life. So, money can't rescue you on this side of the grave, nor can it rescue you on the other side of the grave, because you can't take your money with you (vv. 10-12 and 17; Eccl. 2:18, 21; 7:2; 9:5). Whether you are rich or poor, wise or foolish, you leave everything behind. Many wealthy people think they will go on forever and enjoy their houses and lands, only to discover that death is a great leveler. After death, the rich and the poor stand equal before God. Hebrews 9:27 reminds us that, “It is appointed unto a man once to die, and after this the judgement.” The rich may call their lands after their own names, but the names engraved in stone will outlast the owners. The phrase "he is like the beasts that perish" (v. 12, and see Eccl. 3:10, 19, and 7:2) doesn't suggest that humans are on the same level as brute beasts, but only that both face ultimate death and decay. Yes, my friend, we have eternal souls that only the blood of Jesus Christ is sufficient to redeem from the power of the grave! Today we should make sure we are living for Him and laying up treasures in heaven where they will last forever! (Matthew 6:20-21). God bless!

‘The 18-Inch War'by Joshua Scott Zeitz“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) KJVNicodemus, was as the Bible described him, a ruler of the Jews, a Pharisee. Now the Pharisees were quite devout and devoted to their cause, stringent followers of the law, or at least the law their particular sect laid out.In other words, they relied heavily on their own traditions and precepts as to what was right and wrong. Jesus had many run-ins with the Pharisees and religious rulers of His day because rather than relying on the Word of God to interpret itself, the religious peoples liked to set their own standards of conduct, to exert their own power and prowess amongst themselves and their underlings. Listen, the Bible says, where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom, but when we are led not by the Spirit, but rather by our own rules, standards, and traditions, our own moral code, this only serves to bring about condemnation and confusion. In John chapter 3, Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night and says to Him, “Teacher, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.”I want to point out a couple of things here. First, notice how Nicodemus calls Jesus a teacher twice. He is attempting to exert his power on Jesus, letting him know just who they think he is.Second, notice how Nicodemus says, we know…Again, perhaps trying to exert authority using his position in the Pharisees, trying to skirt full responsibility. Either way, Nicodemus isn't speaking for himself alone or from a place of total personal honesty.Thirdly, I just want to point out that Nicodemus doesn't really know who Jesus is, calling Him a man that God is with…It is clear at this point that Nicodemus is curious, but also ignorant, relying on his position and pre-conceived notions.I love how Jesus responds! He has such an awesome way of cutting right to the heart of the matter while also keeping it so personal! He says to Nicodemus, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”In other words, Nicodemus, you think you know who I am, but had you truly known, you would know that I AM!  And until you get born again, born from above, from the Spirit of God, you will never truly know who I am nor truly see the kingdom of God!You see, Nicodemus knew about Jesus from the things he heard Jesus was doing. He heard about the miracles and it made him curious enough to come to Jesus by night to press Him further. But He didn't really know who Jesus was.I want to stop right here for a moment, before we conclude, and talk for a brief moment about the 18-inch war. Many people sadly will miss Heaven by the space of 18 inches! It may not seem like a huge distance, and it may also seem like quite the random or obtuse number, but in fact it makes all the difference in the world. It makes all the difference for eternity!18 inches, is approximately the distance between the head and the heart. Or in more grim, but truthful terms, 18 inches is what separates us from Heaven and Hell.Jesus is not a feeling, movement, or goosebump. He is a person. He is real. He is God and has always been God. It's not enough to simply know about Him in our heads, we must know Him in our hearts and this happens when we get born-again.The Bible says even the demons believe in God and shudder. (See James 2:19)It's not enough to simply believe there is a God or believe that Jesus is God. We must believe in Him and on Him, placing our total trust in Him.Just like you walk in a room and sit down in a chair

Bussey on Freedom Feature. “At least the way that a lot of people were talking, and the way governments were talking. It was, “you need to conform to these measures, or you are a bad person.” Today we do not seem to have [freedom] front of mind. We see the consequences of what that can be. Wee have a state that says, “You have to conform.” “It's not to a religious doctrine these days but it is to a secular set of beliefs and practices,” says Forbes, “And in order to avoid being persecuted by the state or by your neighbours you have to make sure you're performing all of these practices and adhering to all of these orthodox sort of beliefs as determined by whatever the issue of the day may be.” Forbes observes that “You have to have a culture that values freedom in order to keep your freedoms. I think we can see that with the Covid Pandemic of the past two years. Maybe we are not a culture anymore, or at least we are losing some of that culture that values freedom. We are entering unchartered waters. We don't exactly know what this is going to look like as Canada becomes post Christian. And, so, what does this mean for liberty? What does this mean for the values that we stood for all this time?” Great questions. Great conversation. See James book, Protestant Liberty: Religion and the Making of Canadian Liberalism, 1828–1878 “James Forbes argues that the origins of Canadian liberalism were firmly rooted in the British tradition of Protestantism and were based on the premise of guarding against the advance of supposedly illiberal faiths, especially Catholicism. After the union of Upper Canada with predominantly French-Catholic Lower Canada in 1840, this Protestant ideal of liberty came into conflict with a more neutral alternative that sought to strip liberalism of its religious associations in order to appeal to Catholic voters and allies. In a decisive break from their Protestant heritage, these liberals redefined their ideology in secular-materialist terms by emphasizing free trade and private property over faith and culture. In tracing how the Confederation generation competed to establish a unifying vision for the nation, Protestant Liberty reveals religion and religious differences at the centre of this story.” Please note the views expressed by the individual(s) in this video are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views or principles of the First Freedoms Foundation.

The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. When we see the Lord (v.2), in the end, we will be like him. This transformation begins now, in this life (Rom 12:2; 2 Cor 3:18; Rom 8:29).This is God's "plan" for my life.Western Christianity's individualistic obsession with "God's plan for my life" is neither biblical nor is it part of historic Christianity. It is closely tied in with the "health & wealth" message embraced by hundreds of millions of evangelicals and charismatics. This transformation requires suffering (Rom 8:17; 1 Pet 4:1). We are in the crucible!God cares about character 1000x as much as he does career. For more, please listen to the podcast Decision Making and the Will of God.The hope of seeing God helps to keep us pure.We live in the anticipation of seeing him (v.3). He inspires us.Yet to meet him, we must be pure (Psalm 101:2; Habakkuk 1:13).4 Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 9 Those who have been born of God do not sin, because God's seed abides in them; they cannot sin, because they have been born of God. 10 The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters.Verse 4 gives us a compact definition of sin: violation of God's moral law.It is a personal affront to God, not an infraction of some arbitrary code.Taking morality into our own hands (as our generation has done), refusing to submit to the sovereignty of God, asserting our own autonomy, or right to “update” the Bible to suit our whims -- this is lawlessness. See also Matt 7:23.Law in verse 4 does not mean the same thing as the term in Romans and Galatians, where it refers to Torah. In verse 6, “continuing to sin” (present aspect in Greek—continuous action) means a lifestyle of unrepented sinfulness, as in Hebrews 10:26, not isolated acts of sin.The Gnostics sinned and sinned boldly. To them, sin was a technicality, or some imperfection, since they considered themselves to be perfect already.Jesus is sinless (John 8:46), so those who continue to sin have neither seen him (as he is) nor known him (Matt 7:23; 1 Cor 8:3).V.7 contains the phrase "does righteousness." Everyone who does righteousness is righteous. There is no authentic relationship with God if there is no seriousness about holiness -- about following Jesus' commandments!Satan will try to lead us astray (often through other people). Yet since God's seed remains in us (v.9), we can't go on sinning (living a lifestyle of sin). (“Cannot” in the sense of our refusal, not our inability, since we always have free will.)This seed is the Word (Luke 8:11), which we must retain (Luke 8:15). “Once saved, always saved” is again shown to be a misguided notion!11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We must not be like Cain who was from the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17 How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? The false teachers resemble Cain (v.11).Like the false Christians of Romans 3 and 6, they claimed that sinning magnified God's grace in forgiving sins. The term “antinomian” means that they maintained a lawless position with regard to sin and righteousness (anti + nomos = against + law)Further to verse 12, the Cainite Gnostics taught that Cain was the good guy (not Abel), that the Sodomites were spiritual persons who should never have been destroyed, and that Balaam was a righteous man. Why? Remember that the Gnostics typically abhorred the OT god.The enemies of the god of the OT were their friends. (The enemy of my enemy is my friend.)True love is sacrificial (v.14ff).1 John 3:16 is John 3:16 at the human level, just as John 3:16 is 1 John 3:16 at the divine level.Cain didn't love Abel; rather than sacrificing in a godly manner, he “sacrificed” his own brother. Towards the end of the first century more and more false Christians betrayed their spiritual brothers and sisters to death.Turning in a Christian, especially a non-Roman citizen or a slave, would likely lead to the execution of that individual -- assuming he refused to worship Caesar as Lord. One mark of the false Christian is unwillingness to be persecuted, especially to be martyred.John suggests one more easy test for true and false Christianity: How do those who claim to be disciples sacrifice to meet the needs of those less fortunate? See James 2:14-26, and also Gal 6:10.18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 19 And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; 22 and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.“Setting our hearts at rest” (v.19) has been misunderstood. John isn't encouraging us to feel good about ourselves if we aren't walking in the light.Misinterpreting Col 3:15, some religious teachers insist anything that upsets you—anything that takes away “the peace of Christ” should be avoided. This is bogus. Those with hypersensitive consciences or more “accused” personalities may often find that “their hearts condemn them.” They need encouragement. When we've committed ourselves to loving others and are laying down our lives for them, God sees our hearts and does not condemn us.We may feel unworthy, but our actions show where we really stand before God.When we love “in truth and action” our hearts will be at rest before God because our consciences will be at peace!Attempts to feel good spiritually apart from obedience to God are misguided. Here are three simple tests, each inherent in the message of 1 John, which we can apply:Do I actively seek to alleviate the suffering of my fellow human beings?Am I fulfilling my commission to spread the Word?Do I expect others who are in Christ to walk in the light? And when our hearts are at rest, we receive what we pray for (v.22).This is not the mechanical theology called "Word-faith," which is based on a misunderstanding of Jesus' (hyperbole) in Mark 11:24.We are focused and spiritual in our prayers.See a similar thought in James 1:2-6.23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.Finally, we know he abides in us by the Spirit he gave us (24).This is not because of some feeling we have, either because we can feel the Spirit or because the Spirit makes us feel good.Nor do we know by virtue of the fact that we were baptized (Acts 2:38).Rather, we know the Lord is living in us because of the effects of his Spirit in us.These are practical love and other elements in the fruit of the Spirit. To the extent that these effects are absent, Christ is not dwelling in us richly. The more we surrender to his Spirit, the more we will enjoy walking in the light—which is walking in his steps—and the more he will use us to spread the Word in this world.Thought questions:Am I growing spiritually, actively purifying myself through the hope of seeing the Lord? When is the last time I helped a brother or sister in physical need?Is my heart at rest? Do I generally have confidence that my prayers make a difference?

Essendon Bombers legend Dustin Fletcher had the most charmed rookie season a 17-year-old schoolboy has ever experienced at AFL level; debuting in round three, solidifying his place in Kevin Sheedy's side soon after, and capturing a flag with the “Baby Bombers” in September. His career, which stretched another 383 games after that point to 400 in total, was just as mind-boggling.Fletcher compares that flag with the near-invincible Bombers side of seven years later, where they waltzed to the premiership conceding only a single defeat to the Western Bulldogs. It came a season after the Bombers' shock one-point loss to the Carlton Blues the year prior, which led to Sheedy forcing the entire team to watch on in-person at the MCG as the North Melbourne Kangaroos defeated Carlton in the Grand Final. It was a unique experience, Fletcher says. Fletcher was coached by Sheedy, Matthew Knights, Mark Thompson, and finally his former teammate James Hird, who nominates as the greatest player he ever played with.Fletcher's sons Mason and Max are forging their own sporting careers, both in college football as punters at some of the biggest universities in the US. Later this year, the “Fletcher Bowl” between the pair, who play for Cincinnati and Arkansas respectively, looms as one of the proudest moments of his life.

With his object, James toiled with the notion of creating a tool that embodies sport, escapism, and self-defense; that expresses movement and stillness, a call and response between sporting leisure and creative labor. He attempts to fashion a tool that is multifunctional and dysfunctional at the same time. with Pastor Chuck Ryan Faith Without Deeds is Dead Text: James 2:14-26 Thesis: A true “Faith” in Jesus Christ will naturally produce “Good Deeds a ” 1. James makes it clear that a person who “claims to have faith but has no deeds” his faith is worthless. See James 2:14-17 A. James gives a litmus test to a person's claim to have “faith” in verses 15-16. 1. He begs the question, “What is your response as a Christian when you see or hear of someone who has a genuine need?” “When James speaks of works, he is referring to good deeds which flow naturally from a heart filled with love to God and love to man.” BBC on James, Page 215 2. A “born-again” (John 3) believer will fulfill the two great commands. A. You will love your neighbor in a tangible way. B. James sums up this section by stating, “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:17 2. James also makes it clear that your “faith” must be more than mental assent. See James 2:18-19 A. James presents a diagnostic statement to the professed believer when he states, “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that --- and shudder.” B. James is saying that you can have a cognitive understanding of God's existence and the entire Bible and not know God personally. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord', will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” Matthew 7:21-23 1. The will of God is to invite Jesus into your lives. See John 3:16 & 2 Peter 3:9 2. The will of God is for every true believer to serve Jesus. “For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Ephesians 4:11-12 C. James sums up this section by stating, “show me your faith without deeds and I will show you my faith by what I do. James 2:18b 3. James further empowers his theological understanding of “Faith and Works” by using Abraham as an example of a righteous person, who was a man of action! See James 2:20-26 “Abraham was considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar.” James 2:21 A. Abraham's “Faith was made complete by what he did.” 1. Faith and deeds go together to produce righteousness. 2. James also highlights the Faith of Rahab. “This is what the ancients were commended for.” See Hebrews 11

By Pastor Chuck Ryan Favoritism Violates the Law of Love Text: James 2:1-13 Thesis: God calls the believer to keep the “royal law found in scripture, ‘love your neighbor as yourself'”. James 2:8 1. God commands believers not to show favoritism. He states it emphatically, “Don't”. See James 2:1 Favoritism is, “the unfair practice of treating some people better than others, the showing of special favor or partiality to a particular person or persons.” A. James gives example of favoritism being practiced in the Church. Read Vss. 1a-4 1. The Church is called to be a role model to the world of God's plan for humanity. B. It is spiritually and morally wrong to discriminate against another person solely on their economic status, race, gender, color, language, size, family, or education level.” C. The Bible makes it clear that everyone is made in the image of God. • “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27 D. The word of God says favoritism is a sin. Read Vss. 8-11 1. Favoritism violates the 2nd Great Command or as James calls it the Royal Law. a. Jesus said, “All of the law and the prophets hang on the 1stand 2nd Great commands.” 2. The Gospel promotes Unity not Uniformity. A. A Biblical definition of Spiritual unity: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:3-6 B. Uniformity is concerned with the outward appearance being the same. C. God loves diversity. 1. God's creation is full of variety. 2. We should celebrate God's creation plan. 3. We must mature, and move past having to be around only those like us. 3. This issue is of such a serious nature we are reminded that “Mercy triumphs over judgment.” Read vss. 12-13

FATE OF THE GENTILES, Chapter 17 of Who Crucified Christ by Ogden Kraut  Page 149 to 152 Therefore, wo be unto the Gentiles if it so be that they harden their hearts against the Lamb of God. (I Nephi 14:6) Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, committed a sin when he suggested selling his brother, Joseph, as a slave. However, the other ten sons wanted him dead. Because of this, the Lord showed more mercy toward Judah than he did to the other ten sons. As the favor was shown to Judah's posterity, so the disfavor was shown to the descendants of the other “lost” tribes of Israel. We know where the house of Judah is, but where is the rest of the house of Israel? The Jews were taken captive for a while, but they soon gathered back to Jerusalem. The other tribes were taken captive and gradually dispersed among the nations, and they will yet have to gather. The historian, Josephus, said they were still scattered in the “north countries,” and the Apostle James stated they were still in a scattered condition. (See James 1:1.) JT Olson is on his third career . . . and he's most excited about this one. For 23 years JT was with the Southwestern Company (door-to-door book sales), ten years with an executive search firm he co-founded, and now he is founder of Both Hands, a unique ministry that helps orphans and widows. (See James 1:27 if this sounds vaguely familiar). It's expensive to adopt a child. Both Hands helps an adopting couple build a team to serve a widow for a day. The family and team seek sponsors for their project and the money raised helps pay for the adoption. They raise money this way instead of, for instance, raising money with a golf tournament. JT is excited to share stories about some of the widows that have been served, as well as the families and their journey of adoption. JT's story is unique and compelling. The hand of God has been on his life from an early age and it's all making sense now. It's an inspiring and encouraging story you won't want to miss.   This podcast is produced by underdog.film, based in Franklin, TN. 14:14-17 If Abram had followed God's 12:1 instructions explicitly (leaving family behind), he wouldn't have needed to go to war. (God's full plan is always better than our “amendments” to it!) Melchizedek a precursor of Christ: Priest, King, accepts a tithe, “bread and wine” prefigures Eucharist. See Psalm 110:4 and Hebrews 5:6,10 and 6:10-7:19. 15:6 Abram's faith credited to him as righteousness. (Yes he had faith, but was also OBEDIENT, he ACTED on his faith. See James 2:21-2:24 which synthesizes the connection between Abram's faith and “works.” 15:17 God's covenant with Abram was unilateral. Remember, he was directly responsible for the death of at least thirty-six men and he had robbed God as well as Jericho.No. Only when he was found out, did he confess to the sin, and he didn't show remorse. The anger of the Lord subsided.DISCUSS/CONSIDERGod selected a systematic method to give all of Israel time to examine themselves before Him. When we suffer defeat we must let our lives pass in review before the spotlight of God. Jesus is a teacher and prophet, not a lawyerHe uses all events to teachAgain he uses stories to tell of great spiritual truths:  Life is a gift from God! No amount of possessions, however abundant can make it greater or give it security!“What Is Love? “Love is doing what's best for someone else, whatever it takes.” (Pastor Tyler McKenzie - Northeast Christian Church in Louisville, KT) Love is NOT about how we feel. It's not an emotion it's a commitment to act in the best interests of others. How Does This Kind of Love Change Things? There are two ways. First, something changes inside of me. A decision to love can lead to a feeling of love. We can act our way into the right feelings. In fact, many times it is much easier to act our way into the right feelings than it is to feel our way into the right actions.” Andy WiegandThis is key in holding onto our possessions lightly, and enjoying quality of life. Fear not! In verse 32 Relates to the fear of death and those who persecute us and ties that together with the illusion that possessions provide us with security!Verses that apply: seeking more and more is idolatry. The Greek word for greed names the vice that always seeks for more possessions!  Compare with Col. 3:5.“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Where are our idols?  Not just having possessions, but needing more and more. Colossians 3:5 NIVEat, drink, for tomorrow we die, see: Isa 22:13; 1 Cor. 15:32Differences between materialism and spirituality see last verse, where the the heart reflects our spiritual treasure. Trusting God and having faith for financial provision? Conclusion: scheming for possessions and the transitoriness of life compared. See James 4:13-16  Focus on the rewards of Heaven, which is putting others and loving others first!
