In episode 113, we sit down with occupational health researcher Dr. Annabelle Neal, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health and Wellbeing and Director of the Flinders Workplace Wellbeing Lab in Australia, to explore a critical and often misunderstood question: Why do so few workers report sexual harassment, even when it's widespread and well‑recognized?Drawing on surveys of Australian workers and in‑depth interviews with victims, witnesses, and subject‑matter experts, Dr. Neal's research uncovers the three internal hurdles people navigate before deciding whether to report:* Does this “count” as sexual harassment?* Is it worth the personal and professional risk?* Will reporting actually change anything? We discuss how formal reporting systems often unintentionally discourage victims, how fear of retaliation shapes silence, and why many workers lose trust in HR‑driven processes. This conversation offers a rare, deeply human look at the barriers workers face and how we can build safer, more supportive workplaces. You can find Dr. Neal here: https://www.flindersworkplacewellbeinglab.com/teamYou can find the paper we discuss here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02678373.2025.2607500 This is a public episode. Courts and Tribunals are Getting Tough on Sexual Harassment Claims – How to Prevent the Harassment and The Claim

This week, our presenters Kim McLagan and Monnette Samo look forward to sharing key insights and developments from the past week, including an important and timely discussion on workplace sexual harassment.Courts and Tribunals are continuing to take an increasingly firm approach to sexual harassment claims. Recent decisions demonstrate a clear expectation that employers must take proactive, meaningful steps to prevent harassment before it occurs — not simply respond after a complaint is made. Organisations that fail to implement adequate policies, training, reporting mechanisms, and cultural safeguards are facing significant financial penalties, reputational damage, and heightened regulatory scrutiny.Prevention is no longer optional — it is a legal and commercial imperative. Taking early, well-documented action not only protects your people but also safeguards your organisation’s reputation and long-term success.Watch this week’s Friday Workplace Briefing Video here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In an age of sociocultural change, and against the backdrop of employers' positive duties to prevent sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct, preparing for workplace claims made against the backdrop of cultural traditions like Valentine's Day may not be so far-fetched. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy welcomes back Swaab partner Michael Byrnes to reflect on a recent blog he posted about the workplace relations issues inherent with Valentine's Day, the potential for workplace claims to arise in the wake of such cultural traditions, and whether employers need clauses in their policy for sexual harassment to account for such calendar dates. Byrnes also delves into employers' positive duty to prevent sexual harassment, changing social and cultural expectations for workplace behaviour, whether the inclusion of new clauses risks infantilising employees, catering to a multi-generational workforce, and what will constitute best practice for employers, HR professionals, and employment lawyers. “If something feels wrong, trust your gut.” – Brittany StevensIn this week's episode, Carol Schultz sits down with employment attorney Brittany Stevens (Partner at Phillips & Associates) to unpack the realities of sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, and power dynamics—and what leaders can do to create workplaces where people feel safe speaking up.Brittany explains how harassment is defined under the law (and why it often differs from what people assume), why so many cases come down to evidence and “totality of circumstances,” and how fear of retaliation keeps employees silent—especially when the harasser holds power. They discuss what strong workplace policies and training should actually include, why some organizations make it hard to report, and how employees can protect themselves when a company is focused on protecting itself. The episode closes with practical guidance for both leaders and employees on building safer systems, documenting issues, and knowing when to seek confidential legal advice.TakeawaysSexual harassment isn't always “obvious”—many cases are subtle and pattern-based.Legal definitions of harassment/discrimination vary across federal, state, and city laws.Power imbalances (boss vs. employee) make reporting feel risky and unsafe.Fear of retaliation is one of the biggest reasons people stay silent.Documentation and internal complaints can significantly strengthen a case. Many companies fail by not having clear reporting policies or trusted processes.Leaders must train managers not only on behavior—but on how to respond to complaints.Discrimination can happen anywhere—industry, company size, and role don't matter. Some terminations get “hidden” behind restructuring or reductions in force.Consulting a law firm can be a confidential way to understand your options.Chapters00:00 Intro: The taboo topic—sexual harassment & workplace safety00:49 What Brittany's firm does (employee-side discrimination law)02:19 Why the firm was founded & what motivates this work02:50 Defining harassment vs. what people think harassment is04:28 Harassment isn't always sexual: hostile work environments & protected classes05:15 Evidence, documentation, and why cases are fact-dependent06:16 Power dynamics: why “just say no” isn't realistic07:43 What victims can do when they fear repercussions08:25 Why policies and reporting systems often fail (or don't exist)10:40 Vetting employers: red flags, lawsuits, and research before accepting jobs11:13 DEI changes and what may shift over time12:01 Discrimination happens everywhere (yes—even “good” companies)13:00 What leaders should do: training, reporting, investigations, real support15:54 Women vs. men: patterns Brittany sees in harassment and discrimination cases16:46 Disability/medical termination & “restructuring” as a cover18:35 How Phillips & Associates evolved and expanded over time20:05 Growth bottlenecks: why jurisdiction/laws matter21:21 Why expand into less employee-friendly states like Florida22:58 Client trust: the importance of fast support and connection23:54 Internal training: listening, empathy, and handling emotional calls26:10 Choosing a path: quiet resolution vs. litigation27:03 How to find the firm & their contingency model29:24 Final thoughts: protecting yourself when the company protects itselfConnect With Host Carol SchultzFind more information about our host Carol Schultz and her company at Vertical Elevation,

This episode blends breaking celebrity headlines with reflective conversation on a defining national moment. The show dives into the new lawsuit against Will Smith filed by tour violinist Brian King Joseph alleging sexual harassment, retaliation, and wrongful termination—claims Smith’s attorney firmly denies as “false, baseless, and reckless.” It also unpacks Cardi B’s now‑deleted posts defending Stefon Diggs after his former chef accused the NFL receiver of assault and felony strangulation; Diggs’ attorneys call the allegations unsubstantiated as he awaits arraignment later this month. The team shifts gears to pop‑culture love stories, noting Cher’s admission on Armchair Expert that she “manifested” both a “man and a toddler” before meeting Alexander “AE” Edwards and bonding with his young son. Closing with a wider lens, the show marks five years since the Capitol attack—highlighting how the anniversary is fueling fresh debate and new reports on the aftermath, including mass pardons and their public‑safety implications—while urging listeners to seek peace and perspective amid the noise. Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by Turbonegro. Formed in the late 80s in Norway, Turbonegro has carved out their own unique and silly niche in punk. Raunchy lyrics, makeup, sailor hats, and an endless supply of denim are their most consistent themes. Not to mention having made a name for themselves by being featured in various Jackass related shows (Jackass Number 2, Wildboyz, Viva La Bam). However, despite the band's fun aesthetics, we're not fans of their music. Thus, we have incited the wrath of the Turbojugend.   Intro/Band Overview 00:00 Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives 20:24 Never Is Forever 33:07 Ass Cobra 41:03 Apocalypse Dudes 51:15 Scandinavian Leather 1:05:37 Party Animals 1:14:03 Retox 1:25:52 Sexual Harassment 1:33:48 RockNRoll Machine 1:39:53 Outro 1:48:29   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Patreon https://www.patreon.com/everyalbumever   Merch https://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/   Mike's EP: Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,   Mike on Instagram @pandermonkey Alex on Bluesky @octatron3030 Tom on Instagram @tomosmansounds   History Tom's stuff: Music on Spotify, Apple Podcast on Spotify, YouTube Substack Website   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike's Picks: Apocalypse Dudes (1998) -- Best Album Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives (1992) -- Personal Favorite RockNRoll Machine (2018) -- Worst Album, Least Favorite   Alex's Picks: Ass Cobra (1996) -- Best Album Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives (1992) -- Personal Favorite Party Animals (2005) -- Worst Album, Least Favorite   Albums we discussed this episode... On today's episode, host Kate Lindsay is joined by writer and streamer Laura Kate Dale to talk about what happened to Emiru at this year's TwitchCon. The streamer was assaulted during a meet-and-greet, after a number of female streamers had already dropped out of the convention in fear for their safety. What is it about TwitchCon that makes creators feel unsafe, and why are female streamers, in particular, still paying the price?  Get more of ICYMI with Slate Plus! In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. David Buss, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and a pioneer in the field of evolutionary psychology. We explore the science behind human mate selection in both short- and long-term relationships. We discuss universal traits valued in long-term partners along with key differences between women and men in what they prioritize when selecting a mate. We also discuss the darker aspects of mating behavior, such as deception, the evolutionary function of jealousy and the motivations behind stalking. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com.
