In this episode of the Came to Believe Recovery Podcast, the hosts discuss the concept of addiction switching, where individuals may replace one addiction with another, often without addressing the underlying issues. They explore the complexities of addiction, including the challenges of managing behaviors related to food, exercise, and other compulsive actions. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding the root causes of addiction and the need for a balanced approach to recovery that avoids simply substituting one addiction for another. In this conversation, the speakers delve into the complexities of addiction, discussing the nuances of mental and physical dependencies, the concept of addictive personalities, and the potential pitfalls of recovery, including service work and meeting dependency. They explore the impact of technology and social media on modern relationships and communication, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle and spiritual connection in the face of distractions. The discussion highlights the need for honesty and self-awareness in recovery, encouraging listeners to reflect on their behaviors and seek help when necessary. It used to control me, but now I am in control. It's funny, I hadn't ever looked up the meaning of what it entails to be deemed having an "addictive personality", I just inherently knew I fit the bill. Addiction is usually blacklisted as "bad", but is it? Can we flip the script and learn to not only understand addictions and addictive behavior, but leverage that behavior for our greater good? I've been able to. So that's at least one example of it being possible. Now it's your turn ;)Let me know what hits home and what next steps you're committing to make.In your corner Superhuman in the making, Coach Ria Mestiza

This week on @monday_mile_series, it's me and @markwogan13 – the culinary legend behind @spooningwithmarkwogan and @homesliceldn It's a chat full of food and fitness this week, and there's no better man to do it with. As a person with a self-described addictive personality, Mark has lived a life of extremes. These days, though, he's all about balance: he treats his body well with ice baths and exercise, but he also fuels himself with perfect pizza from his restaurant Homeslice. He only eats the whole thing occasionally. And of course, we chat about his hit podcast Spooning, which is NOT about cuddling in bed, I discovered. Head over to Mark's page to see my episode with @katyajones – right after listening to Monday Mile of course. Thank you Mark for such an interesting and introspective chat! What does an addictive personality actually look like? People always tell me, “I have a very addictive personality”. Well, I'm right there with you, my friend - if you struggle with substances, it just makes sense we will struggle with behavior addictions, too. Today we're talking about having an addictive personality and the behavior addictions we can pick up along the way. If I do something and I like it, I want more of it. Food, people, work, exercise, self-improvement and recovery, television, ice cream – it could literally be anything. If I get some gratification from it, I want to do it again, as soon as possible. One common factor underlying nearly every addiction is the feeling of reward. Your brain registers all pleasures in the same way, whether it's a cold beer after work, a shopping spree, morning sex, or a delicious meal. When you experience that feeling of reward, the brain is flooded with the neurotransmitter dopamine. It's the feel-good neurotransmitter and it is the thing we are chasing for most of the time. So let's get into some of the traits of an addictive personality, what they look like in everyday life, and how they manifest in some of the most common behavior addictions. Guest Anna Lembke is a psychiatrist and a specialist in the behavioral sciences who studies addiction. While there is tremendous variety in the things people can be addicted to, all forms are tied to dopamine, a biochemical that is key to human senses of pleasure, reward, and motivation. She says that new treatments are combining traditional abstinence with programs that help patients reenergize dopamine centers in the brain through physical exercise, which is a known producer of dopamine. If patients can reach 30 days of abstinence there is a good chance at recovery, Lembke tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Episode Reference Links:Anna Lembke's Stanford ProfileAnna Lembke's WebsiteHow do we fight the disease of addiction? In this episode, we discuss addictive personality and various forms of addiction, particularly focusing on comfort eating. I talk about the concept of addictive personality, stating that it oversimplifies the reality of addiction. Addiction can manifest in different forms, not just related to substances but also behaviours like internet scrolling, binge-watching, and overworking. This podcast delves into the brain's chemistry, explaining how dopamine and endorphins are involved in addiction, leading to changes in brain structure and impulse control.Shelley emphasizes the importance of understanding addiction to make informed choices and regain control over your life. The addictive personality myth is a psychological theory based on the idea that a lot of people are addicted to more than one thing and that some people have a proclivity to be addicted to things more than others. The evidence for the addictive personality theory is not strong. And, once you understand the emotional basis of addiction, it becomes clear that this theory doesn't really hold any water. The reaosn why so many people get addicted to more than one thing is because addiction, at its core, is an emotional problem. It is not a personality issue, it is an emotional avoidance issue. If you've learned a lot and you're ready to apply what I teach in this show, you can ge the quit for good course here!

Today's guest is Brooke Hemingway. Brooke is a 40 something mom of six, who went from the traditional Western medicine world to holistic health and real wellness five years ago. She also went from being busy having babies and supporting her husband full time while he worked as the chief of ER to becoming a full-fledged entrepreneur while nursing babies, having babies, homeschooling, and flailing her way through the messy middle to come out way further along than she could have ever imagined. She started her first business with her fifth baby being six weeks old, became a million plus dollar earner right after the birth of her six child, and went on to create three more six-figure businesses. https://www.worldsbest.rehab/addictive-personality-disorder/ https://www.worldsbest.rehab/es/addictive-personality-disorder/ https://www.worldsbest.rehab/de/addictive-personality-disorder/ What is Addictive Personality Disorder? The term ‘addictive personality disorder' is used a lot in modern society to describe someone that gets “hooked” on a substance or activity very easily. It is believed that there are people that become addicted very easily after short-term exposure to substances, activities, and/or events. This belief is especially true for individuals when they use alcohol and/or drugs, as many people believe their personality makes them instantly addicted. The psychiatric medical community does not use addictive personality disorder as an actual diagnosis for patients. According to Dr. Michael Weaver, medical director of the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addiction at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, personalities are extremely complex and there is not one person's personality that is more likely to be addictive than another individual's personality. Still, there are some aspects of a person's make-up and life that could make them more likely to become addicted to alcohol and/or drugs. Research within the medical community is still ongoing, but there are somethings that have been learned about addiction. What risk factors may lead to addiction? A person addicted to alcohol and/or drugs may have risk factors in their lives that lead them down the pathway of addiction. There are a few risk factors associated with addiction and rather than having an addictive personality disorder, these could be the reason a person gets hooked to a substance. Genetics Genetics could play a big role in addiction. Research has found that there is more than a 50% possibility that a person's addiction stems from their genetic makeup. According to Dr. Weaver, genetic makeup has been proven time and time again as a strong possibility for addiction. Children that come from a history of addiction have a good chance of becoming addicts themselves. Of course, this doesn't always occur and genetics alone does not mean an individual is automatically an alcohol and/or drug addict. Environment Along with genetics, a person's environment plays a large part in whether or not someone becomes addicted to drugs and alcohol. A child that watches their mother or father consume drink and drugs has a strong possibility of doing the same when they grow older. Exposure to alcohol and/or drugs can lead to a person's addiction in the future. If an individual is never exposed to substances or around them, it is impossible to become an addict. Yet, if the same person lives everyday with alcohol and drugs around them at home, school, and/or work, there is a chance they too will become addicted. Once again, just because a person lives in an environment that experiences addiction, it doesn't mean they will become addicts themselves. However, living in an environment of addiction can fuel further addiction in future generations. There are a few environmental factors that can add to the possibility of a person becoming addicted. These include: Parents Friends Education and activities Social support Town, neighborhood, and region a person lives in Stress Anxiety Seeking a way out of circumstances The availability of alcohol and drugs It is important to note that addiction is a disease. It develops like most other medical illnesses. A person with an underlying genetic weakness to addiction may be more susceptible if they are exposed to an environment that breeds it. Emotional and mental health Since the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, the medical community is discovering more information about the role emotional and mental health play in everyday life. While it was previously known that keeping emotional and mental health at high levels was important, research has found out that these two aspects may have more of an impact then once believed in a person's social and physical well-being. Addiction can be caused by a person's emotional and mental health state. If these are low, it is possible that addiction is more likely to occur. An individual with an emotional or mental health illness is more likely to develop a substance addiction to cope with the disorder. The most common mental health disorders that could trigger addictions are: Depression Attention Deficit Disorder Physical, emotional and/or mental trauma When these issues are present, a person has a dual diagnosis, also known as a co-occurring disorder. The good news for individuals suffering with addiction is that many high-quality rehabs are able to treat both substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. What are the signs of addiction? There are some specific signs of addiction that occur in people in need of alcohol or drugs. These signs also show up in people addicted to other things such as sex, pornography, videogames, and more. The signs of addiction include: Obsessing over the substance Always wanting more Lying about using the substance or being addicted to it Manipulation of others to help fuel their addiction Criminal behavior Continuing to use a substance despite negative effects Impulsive behavior Not taking responsibility Revolving, unsteady relationships Seeking sensation and satisfaction Neuroticism Keeping secrets Taking risks How to avoid becoming an addict A person with an addictive personality disorder will attempt to replace one addiction with another. This may simply lead to further addiction and health problems. There are some ways to avoid becoming an addict. For example: Avoid eating for comfort Avoid drinking to socialize with others Avoid constantly checking social media, email, etc. Avoid self-medicating or using pills or marijuana for relaxation Don't avoid quitting due to its difficulty Seek help from professionals A person doesn't have to hit rock bottom to realize that they need help. While a person may have a personality that craves more, they do not have to live an unhealthy lifestyle. Personality doesn't determine a person's future. Residential rehab facilities are able to help individuals struggling with addictive personality disorder to end their addictions and receive treatment for co-occurring disorders. Once the addiction and co-occurring disorder is treated, individuals are able to live highly productive lives. The first step to getting help is acknowledging that there is a problem. Once the problem is acknowledged, a residential rehab can provide the professional help needed for healing.
