The library and workshop moved into the same building as Tribe Porty – both share the same kind of ethos. This month, it celebrates its 10th anniversary which makes it the perfect time to find out how it has thrived, despite the pandemic, and added new services all around the idea of make do and mend. https://edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk/
This week on Solarpunk Presents, we're bringing you an interview with Andy Gross, one of the brilliant minds behind Fully Automated! A Solarpunk TableTop RPG (Role-Playing Game). Don't worry, you don't need to know game jargon to follow along for this one - solarpunk storytelling comes in a lot of different forms, and this is yet another kind for people to use to imagine a kinder, greener future that strives towards a utopia … of sorts.RPGs get a reputation for being all about fighting. A broken bike can be a real drag, and the cost of repairs can add up. Ordinary Spokes is a community cycling non-profit, and on Wednesday evenings, the group operates a D-I-Y cycling repair hub out of the St. John's Tool Library. Our Morning Show reporter Darrell Roberts visited the hub this morning to get some tips.
The practice of manufacturing for planned obsolescence seems to be what most manufacturers in the present time follow. This means to make an item that will break down sooner than their earlier versions, lack of how-to-fix information or tutorials and even make it impossible to be repaired. The direct impact of such a philosophy increases the bottom line of the business at the cost of increasing e-waste and its impact on our planet. There needs to be a movement from a linear economy in which we take, make and waste to a circular economy. Complete circularity may be hard to achieve in all instances, repairing an item is an alternative that can reduce what ends up in the landfills. “Repair is such a low hanging fruit” says our guest Darren Cotton, Executive Director of The Tool Library. The Tool Library is an all-volunteer nonprofit tool-lending library based on the mantra that cost shouldn't be a barrier to fix up one's home, grow food, or improve the community. Tools can range anywhere from hammers, screwdrivers, and shovels to power drills, circular saws, and sanders. Individuals and businesses can donate tools to the program which will then be circulated throughout the neighborhood for a small annual membership fee. Thus, people looking for an alternative to buying expensive tools that get little use now have this resource at their disposal. In addition, The Tool Library collaborates with the City of Buffalo to host once a month Repair Cafe, where volunteers help individuals repair an item that would have otherwise ended in the landfill. Hey Everybody! Welcome back to another episode of The Bolton Ebikes Podcast. I'm your host, Kyle Chittock, the owner of Bolton Ebikes and always trying to either hopefully teach you something about electric bikes or share with you an idea I have that might improve. The situation with electric bikes. I might need your feedback on this idea. This is the first time I'm sharing it publicly. So stick around. I think this is going to be really interesting. In today's episode you'll learn more about: Why getting a simple repair done at a local bike shop has been taking a lot more time lately. What do you need to work on your bike if you can't get a bike shop to assist you? Is it worth it to drive a few hours to get your ebike repaired or worth it to do it yourself. What we do to work with local bike shops when further assistance is required beyond our technical support via email and phone. How we are going to empower you to repair your ebike without the added expense of purchasing a tool you may never use again. Tell us if you like the idea or have any questions, concerns, thoughts, and suggestions to info@boltonebikes with the subject “Podcast on Tool Library”. We talk about the philosophy behind sharing vs owning, waste vs re-use, and what our wonderful Tool Library shifts to look like during a pandemic. Some projects have had to pause, lots have had to shift-gears, and other totally new projects have emerged, including their new "Pin a Smile On" campaign, where they've been creating pins for their volunteers to make their smiling faces visible despite masks. We are so lucky to have this incredible organization and access to so many amazing tools here in Guelph! As a graduate student at the University at Buffalo, Darren founded The Tool Library, a community-based tool lending library, in response to his experience renting from an absentee landlord. Darren Cotton has over a decade of experience in the fields of community development, urban planning, and information design. Working as Director of Community Development & Planning at the University District Community Development Association (UDCDA), Darren was responsible for writing and administering over $2 million in grant funding focused on commercial corridor revitalization, small business development, alternative transportation planning, historic preservation, public art, and community capacity building in Buffalo's University District. Prior to this, Darren served as an Associate Planner at the University at Buffalo Regional Institute working on a regional sustainability initiative, the remediation of industrial brownfields, and a form-based overhaul of Buffalo's zoning code. With a Bachelor's Degree in International Studies and Linguistics and a Master's Degree in Urban Planning from the University at Buffalo, Darren works to bridge the gap between research and policy through planning, design, and grassroots activism and is a strong believer that a small, dedicated group of individuals can change the world.
For this episode I interview Thirza Armstrong, host of "The Crow's Nest", a podcast Thirza's been hosting on behalf of the Guelph Tool Library, that we've had the pleasure of airing on our CFRU airwaves. With the Crow's Nest, Thirza implores us to listen as they "chat with folks about community resilience and how the world’s lost without it, the importance of skill sharing and how you’re missing out, and the timeless 21st century hot topics: sustainability and self sufficiency."This was an endearing conversation, stumbling through the parallels of these hosts' attempts to create space, leave space, collect stories, and learn about their communities, about how much can be learned from listening, and the balance needed in a sharing economy: we may show up to borrow, but what we lend or give is just as valuable. You can check out the podcast at https://thecrowsnest.substack.com/This interview was originally recorded on June 4th 2020. Chris Hellawell is founder and director of Edinburgh Tool Library, which works like a lending library, sharing tools rather than books. Chris is passionate about the concept of sharing as a way to tackle the climate crisis, and also as a way to save money, and to build social connections in communities. By sharing, everyone is richer. The Edinburgh Tool Library started out as a set of shelves in a spare room. Now it’s a city-wide organisation with multiple sites, including a tool maintenance depot, two wood workshops, a library and a police box. The Library runs classes, youth programming, skills development for disadvantaged groups, and a volunteer programme transforming community spaces throughout the city.

Got a DIY project, big or small, but don't have the tools you need? Frank heard from Neal Campbell, one of the volunteers at Belfast Tool Library, a one-of-a-kind resource on the island of Ireland See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Edinburgh Tool Library has become a popular feature in Portobello. Its workshops, within the building run by Tribe Porty in Windsor Place, are filled with the kind of top of the range tools that cost a small fortune to buy. The concept is simple and works just like any other library – except, instead of books, you borrow all the tools you need for a project (and perhaps some of the wood as well). But its volunteers provide a service beyond the basics, a service bot just to individuals but to communities as well, as Porty Podcast Producer David Calder’s been finding out.hello@edinburghtoollibrary.com
Alexis was impressed with the Tool Library of Minnesota; Jason watched another football game; Cabin winterizing with the Matheson's ; Dawn did Pokemon Go community day and evolved some shinys.
When Earthy closed its doors in Portobello, many people wondered what would happen with the space. Well, now we know. It's currently under a pretty major refurbishment by Tribe Porty which has taken over the whole building - we'll hear more about its plans later in the year. But what they have done is open up the space to other social enterprises - including the Edinburgh Tool Library. Its part of the building is now ready - but they can't open to the public just yet as other sections are still construction sites. However, this week, they invited people to take a look around and enjoy a beer and a BBQ. We went along to take a look.
Have you ever needed a tool but didn’t want to buy it? Well Matt’s guest this week, Elia Bruno, offers you an opportunity to BORROW it, through his new HNL Tool Library! Listen in, to learn about Elia’s creative ideas to build both projects and community. www.hnltoollibrary.org
Tool libraries are a brilliantly simple concept, and are a pretty popular thing over in North America, but up until a couple of years ago, we didn’t have even one here in the UK.All that changed in 2015 when Chris Hellawell started up The Edinburgh Tool Library. It’s an inspirational story of one man with a […] The post [002] – MEET THE FOUNDER OF THE UK’S FIRST TOOL LIBRARY appeared first on Sustainable(ish).
Some of you may have noticed work going on in the shop that used to house Earthy. Two things are happening there – the first is an expansion of Tribe Porty which was getting a little cramped upstairs; and the second is a new home for the Portobello branch of the Edinburgh Tool Library – we’ll have more on THAT closer to the time when it opens. However, it will also be home to something brand new – a project called ‘Fork in the Road’, a social project under the umbrella of the Tool Library. We went along to find out more:
Members of The Thingery will soon be able to borrow anything from ski equipment to tents to bocci ball sets from their local depot. These lending libraries of things will be housed in shipping containers located on neighbourhood streets around the Lower Mainland. Chris Diplock founded Vancouver’s tool library. He joins us to talk about his latest project in cooperative use of resources.
This week, we'll have some quick-hit community headlines for you. Also, a delegation of Mexican activists are seeking justice for alleged corporate abuse by Mexican-Canadian mining corporation, Blackfire Exploration. And, Toronto's innovative community Tool Library is raising funds to keep its doors open. Plus, a community cooking program is providing support and smashing stigma for queer and trans men in Toronto's South Asian community. Produced by Emily Joveski, Chelsey Gould, Axile Gerona, Munir Nadim, Sanjeev Wignarahjah.
Joining hosts Martin & Perrine this week on B-Side Stories is Ben Phillips from the Newtown Tool Library to discuss the latest in community tool lending and their fantastic "repair cafe" which is being run on October 14. Members of the public can bring old products to be given a new lease of life rather than being thrown out! Ben also introduces us to his favourite local track, Pro Bono Techno Zone by Estere.
Today Brooke chats with Justin Morrissey, the founder of Toolo, the Blue Mountains’ first tool library and co-op. As you probably know, a huge part of slow living is based in both community and environmental stewardship, and tool libraries are a big step in the right direction. In this episode Justin and Brooke get really practical, as he explains how he began the library (and what drove him to do so in the first place) as well as his advice for people who may want to start a library in their own community. They also look at how the organisation is structured and the work that went in to it before launching, as well as the vital role that volunteers play in its ongoing success. Brooke and Justin also talk about the issue of convenience, and why our mindset needs to shift from one of immediacy to one of preparation (we can’t expect these resources to operate in the same way as the local Bunnings or big box store) and how learning to let go of the ego of ownership is a big part in the change too. If you listen to today’s episode and want to know more about starting or running a tool library yourself, head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/185 and click the link to get in touch with the team at Toolo, as they’re a wealth of expertise and are happy to work with other communities looking to make the change. And if you live in the Blue Mountains, sign up and support Toolo! They need to make it to 150 members by 2018 in order to keep running and that means it’s on the community to support them. This week’s guest is James Mastraieni. James is on the UCB main stage team Outside Dog. James is also a fellow podcast host! He has a great podcast I listen to all the time called I’m Too Effing High. He brings on fellow comedians and tries to answer the question each week, are comedians funnier when they’re high. And I will give a hint. It’s very, very funny. James and I talk about a lot! • A police officer of the Atlanta Police Department ended up truly protecting and serving when he got a shoplifting call. A 12-year-old girl had been caught stealing a pair of shoes for her sister, because her family couldn’t afford them. The officer drove her home, bought the family-of-seven dinner, and started a clothing and food drive for the family. • The San Francisco non-profit Tipping Point just announced that they have started a 100 million dollar initiative to help with the homeless and poverty levels in the Bay area. • A non-profit of Toronto called the Institute for a Resource Based Economy works toward launching projects that challenge the current economic model with resource sharing initiatives. Their first project is a Tool Library, which is similar to the one I talked about a few episodes, back but they have also expanded and opened the Sharing Depot which provides any items people may need for events or parties or projects but don’t necessarily have the space or funds to buy. • An 18 year old boy invented a bra called “Eva” that could potentially detect breast cancer in it’s earliest stages! • James is from Pittsburgh, PA and the city is working towards creating affordable renovations and housing as the population within city hub expands and grows. This initiative will be working to keep lower incomes from being pushed out of their own city. Also Jack Brambaugh is the city’s MVP volunteer! • In Animal Corner we learn about a small town that is painting rocks and hiding them around town to raise awareness for their animal center. And the dog friendly campus of American University, D.C. is bringing in audiences of dogs to help those who have fear of public speaking! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week’s guest is Mary Holland! (HBO’s Veep, Seeso’s Shrink, The Largo Theater, UCB Theater) We talk about:• A Tool Library in Minnesota, which allows you rent any tool that you need for up to 7 days. The best part is that most of the tools were donated by a local senior David Merry. • A dad who showed up at school and saved his daughter from embarrassment in the best way and also maybe the worst. • A caterpillar that eats through plastic and might just be the answer to ridding our Earth of waste piles in an environmentally friendly way. • Britain went without coal for a full 24 hours for the first time since the industrial revolution and several other countries have made great environmental strides. • The gofundme of the week is an indiegogo.com fundraiser for Yoots, a ride service that provides underserviced kids with rides to school programs and activities. There goal is to broaden the reach of every non-profit and school by shifting the burden of finding and paying for transportation. • Writing Our Rights is an empowerment workbook for young girls. It teaches the skill of writing by using quotes and facts from historically groundbreaking women in politics. It was created by a group called Ignite which works to create more of a female presence in politics by educating and providing political leadership training in highschools, colleges and city chapters. • Mary’s hometown is Galax, Virginia and is home to the Rooftop of Virginia Community Action Program, which works to combate poverty and focus on assisting and empowering low-income citizens by using various strategies to increase their level of self-sufficiency. It is also home to the most amazing animal corner/non-profit, Smokey’s Bunny Haven!
